Liminal Space 2 RC7: Tape, Fuzz & Beautiful New Reverb Spaces

"Liminal Space 2 RC7 now has tape saturation, tape shimmer, fuzz, robot speech, and new Authentic Soundware-inspired spaces. Your old pal Keith went in to update his haunted digital reverb synth and apparently forgot where the brakes were. So grab your headphones: we're going from beautiful studio strings to a cassette deck that probably shouldn't be allowed to drive!

First, Space Age Strings from Authentic Soundware meets four new reverb banks evolved from Jared Hunter's impulse responses, used with his permission. We explore Color EQ and Decay Color, compare Eastside Church with its source IR, and squeeze into the tiny Relic Room. These are algorithmic reverbs inspired by measured spaces; the IRs aren't playing inside the plugin.

Then things get gloriously unreasonable. The new GRIT module brings warmth, crunch, wavefolding, bitcrushing, shoegaze fuzz, varispeed tape, and Speak & Spell-style speech processing. We build tape shimmer, stereo wow and flutter, and a weird reverse-tape bloom. How many ways can you bend pitch in a reverb? Apparently, ALL OF THEM.

The CV Bus is a more functional approach to the “multiple” utility of the modular synthesizer. The CV Big Bus is an evolution of the original CV Bus design from 2013 for Alessandro Cortini's personal Make Noise system. In an effort to accommodate the increased modulation density of the New Universal Synthesizer System, the CV Big Bus doubles the channel count from 4 to 8. These 8 channels are distributed across the center of the system, allowing for quick, clean, and intuitive patching. The numerical indicators are illuminated, providing visual indication of channel number, level, rate and polarity for up to 8 signals to be shared throughout a patch. This distribution method is unlike the typical multiple since the control signals will appear beneath their potential destinations, resulting in less cable mess. The color coding and visual indication makes navigating complex patches easier and more intuitive. Typically, the CV Bus would be used to share the most important control signals in a patch, such as your clock, modulation, sequence, and audio signals - any type of signal the system creates may be shared!

A high quality Stereo Line Driver converts modular synthesizer signal levels to the commonly used Line Level. There are mini-jack inputs for Left or Mono, and Right for Stereo, a single master volume control, as well as a stereo line output pair. The left output doubles as a TRS ⅛” headphone output. These outputs are capable of driving a long cable out to a PA System or a set of Headphones. They are AC coupled with a built-in limiting circuit (with visual indication) that prevents damage to ears and PA system when the patching gets experimental.

A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I enjoyed having the Vongon Solarfaze and Polyphrase on the table for my last jam and left them there on a whim. That was the starting point. Next, I needed to run a synth through them, so I chose the Novation Circuit Monostation. I borrowed the CMS from a friend and had been looking to make some music with it; my opinion is that it's an extremely underrated synth that can do way more than people recognized at the time. And once I had its sequencer running and a bassline queued up, I could hear more of what was needed.

I also recently got a couple of Stylophones, because they are extremely affordable—the S-1 was something like $60 Canadian—and because I like the sound of them. Using the CMS's CV outputs, I sent a second set of sequences to the Gen X-2, which has CV input. I also took advantage of the Gen X-2's beautiful internal delay for cascading performances. The S-1 ended up my improv melody device for the last third of the song.

At this point, I needed reverb but didn't want to add multiple reverb boxes, so I added the Jellymix to act as stereo send to all the synths. For reverb, I chose the Swells, because I currently have it in a case with the Fieldtone Weaver and Qu-Bit Stardust, which can add a lot to a mix through stereo sample mangling. The Stardust is playing something that came from the CMS into Weaver; the Weaver is playing a snippet of my voice.

By this point, I could hear the full song, and it was just a matter of adding a couple of sequences and performing the whole thing. Pretty fun to see how wanting to explore a bit of hardware can lead to a finished song.

Performed and recorded live to a stereo output from the Jellymix, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

The Terminal Island Freeway (CA 47 & 103) | Synthesizer soundtrack

"We return to Terminal Island to explore its freeways anew after several major construction projects, starting with California highways 103 and 47, which form the Terminal Island Freeway. The island and its surroundings are at the southern end of Los Angeles, and host the massive ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. This gives the drive an industrial, surreal, and delightfully dystopian vibe. The music, which combines metallic sounds with a sense of solitude, reflects the experience.

The Terminal Island Freeway begins at an intersection near the southern terminus of Interstate 710 and heads north, crossing the Commodore Schuyler F. Heim Bridge onto the mainland, where 47 and 103 split. We stick with CA 103 and the freeway, passing by some large industrial facilities and CA 1, and ending at modest intersection with Willow Street in Long Beach.

LONDON, UK: advanced modular synthesiser developer Knobula is poised to cultivate new ground with its upcoming Drum Farm Eurorack module — merging synthesis, sampling, and real-time effects into a single, hands-on instrument built for fast, intuitive sound design, empowering users to relentlessly sculpt, process, sample, and re-sample sounds grown from its wide range of virtual analogue and physically modelled drum and effects algorithms — readily representing the latest addition to its growing lineup of control-centric instruments embodying a no-screen, no-preset philosophy, as of April 21…

As an appropriate appellation, Drum Farm was inspired by Knobula Technical Director Jason Mayo’s background in computer animation, where vast ‘render farms’ generated thousands of realistic images with minimal human input; as a performance-focused Eurorack drum module occupying 24HP of rack space, it is organised into three core sections: a Drum Synth with 16 virtual analogue and physically modelled drum algorithms, an Effects engine offering 16 different realtime processes, and a digital Sampler with up to three playback voices — capturing the combined output of everything a creative user could conceivably do with it. Duly designed for fast, intuitive sound creation, Drum Farm positively encourages an immediate, iterative workflow — simply select a drum model, sculpt it, process it live through the effects, sample the result, blend it with another model, and repeat. As a result, complex and evolving sounds quickly emerge.

Embodying Knobula’s philosophy of promoting experimentation and tactile control reminiscent of classic real-world instruments, Drum Farm features no screens and no sub-menus. Instead, it is a performance-focused module that rewards hands-on exploration, invites happy accidents, and provides a fertile environment for sounds to flourish and grow.

It is possible to create fully hands-free generative patches, self-building sample libraries, or access to round-robin multi-samples since all controls are CV- or trigger-assignable via five CV/Gate inputs. Sensibly, sounds can be saved to a microSD card alongside a complete snapshot of the module itself, whereby buffers, knob positions, samples, and settings are stored together as a session — with up to 32 sessions per card — allowing users to return to their work, exactly where they left off. It is fair to say, therefore, that Drum Farm is always ready for both studio experimentation and live recall.

Thanks to Knobula cultivating new ground with Drum Synth, the relentless creation of drum parts in Eurorack has never been more immediate or rewarding. I'll start by saying the ENSEMBLE section of this synth sounds incredible and works 100%. The ENSEMBLE section is where the Brass, Strings, Chorus (think synth choir, not a chorus effect), and organ sounds are found. These are the bread and butter of this synth. Huge, fat sounds found in this section, and they all work excellently.

The PERCUSSION section is where the more "transient" sounds are found and they all work on each of the 4 settings (Electric Piano, Clavi, Piano and Harmonics). However, the "B" key in each octave either doesn't sound at all, or just makes a faint sound that is not at all like the others. The "TREMOLO" effect in the PERCUSSION section does not work at all, and if you select it, it effectively mutes all the sounds in the percussion section.

The Chorus modulation on the stick is very very faint, and sometimes not really audible at all. The pitch bend however works flawlessly, and the spring to return it to center is in tact and working 100%. The "CHORUS/PHASE" effect buttons work but the effect sounds underwhelming, but it does work. I don't know enough about the architecture of this keyboard, but I'm assuming the CHORUS/PHASE effect buttons and the CHORUS PHASE control on the stick are related.

Everything else works like it should. And even with these "issues" named above, this is still a very functional synth with some killer sounds that just don't sound like anything else.

Fully polyphonic! ALL notes. Its wild.

Cosmetically it is in very nice condition. There is one light colored scratch down the left side of the wood case (pictured).

I have not made any attempt to service this keyboard. Therefore, this could be a simple contact cleaning for some of these issues to restore some, if not all of its original functionality."

"80's in 80 Seconds Episode 2 has landed! The first one was a bit fun so let's keep the theme going. This one starts off with a nice "groove" and builds with some synths spanning the decade. If you listen past the 80 seconds the Arp Odyssey briefly shows off its duo-phonic capabilities with a few 2 note chords that almost have a vocoder like effect with the phaser on it just after the 2 minute mark.
The following instruments were used and recorded as a 2 track with no editing or overdubs with each part being played into a pair of Arturia Keystep Pro sequencers. As always, AI free and made with real ingredients. Thanks for watching!

Nervy jam w/ Torso T-1, Moog Matriarch, Micromonsta 2, Drumbrute Impact

A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

After my recent work with the S-4, Torso reached out to see if I'd like to borrow the T-1 for a couple of months, with no expectations on me making a video or doing anything publicly with it. I found the T-1 to be an exceptional sequencer for noodling around, for both better and worse. Better: you quickly start writing song ideas you wouldn't otherwise come up with, and arranging multiple parts across different instruments is extremely fast. Worse: it was challenging for me to shape the output into a finished song; to get to the finish line, I had to work against (or ignore) some of the T-1's best features.

Together, it makes me think the T-1 would shine most as an idea generator with another sequencer (e.g. the DAW), where you could take output from the T-1 and then further refine it. Really enjoyed my time with it, though.

This also marks the return of the Moog Matriarch. I had sold off the Matriarch because it was too large for my smaller studio, or maybe too large to justify keeping around as a mono device for the table. Then I got a larger studio and immediately missed it. Happy to have it back, even if it still feels too big for what it does.

As for the rest, well, they do what they do well. The Micromonsta 2 is a great synth for filling in the gaps, and is bitimbral; the Arturia Drumbrute Impact is a superb drum machine for live performance; and the Chroma Console is a perfect little sweetener, here taking a mono instrument into the stereo space.

Performed and recorded live to a multitrack output, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

While the name and styling lean on the metal heritage it's been interesting to find a subtler warmth and crunch, synths in tube amp like tones and blown out noisy cassette style grunge for more ambient music.
