Exploring Kaona's Modular Innovations at Superbooth 2025 | Algorithmic Sequencing & Granular Magic

video upload by Jonathan Knightsnare

New maker. This is the first post to feature Koana Modular.

"While at Superbooth 2025 in Berlin, I had the pleasure of diving into the world of Kaona, a boutique modular synth company hailing from the south of France near Aix-en-Provence. Kaona is renowned for crafting ingenious Eurorack modules that blend algorithmic sequencing with creative sound design tools.

Here are some standout modules I explored:

Skippy: A 4-channel polyrhythmic trigger sequencer offering matrix and non-matrix patterns, perfect for generating complex rhythmic structures.

Skippy Live: An expander for Skippy, adding real-time performance controls like reset, play/stop, and live mode toggling, enhancing your live sequencing capabilities.

Zazou: An algorithmic pattern generator that produces MIDI and CV sequences based on various algorithms, including fractals and mathematical patterns, allowing for intricate melodic explorations.

Sisyphus: A stereo granular filter module that uniquely combines granular synthesis with custom filtering modes, enabling the creation of textures ranging from smooth to glitchy.

Mûmack: An analog VCO featuring three unique mixable shapers, allowing for the generation of sounds from classic to complex and organic.

Kaona's modules are a testament to innovative design, offering musicians and sound designers tools that inspire creativity and exploration. Their commitment to pushing the boundaries of modular synthesis is evident in each of their thoughtfully crafted modules.

Skippy Exp: an expander for Skippy

video upload by Kaona modular music

"Skippy Exp is a tiny module in 2HP that adds "Play/Stop" and "Reset" functions to Skippy, either via a button or a CV input."

"Skippy Exp is a very small module that in 2HP adds to Skippy the 'Play/Stop' function and the 'Reset' function, either with a button or with a CV input. It cannot work independently and you absolutely need Skippy to use it.

For those who do not need the live settings that Skippy Live allows (or who no longer have space!), Skippy EXP nevertheless allows you to add two essential functions for a dynamic game.

This module cannot work in parallel with Skippy Live which already has these two functions. It can be placed on the right or on the left. The connector to connect it to Skippy is provided. This module does not need to be connected to the power supply."

You can find additional posts featuring Skippy here.

"All voices, filters, VCAs working and consistent (by classic analog standards).

Memory is fine.

Screens are all functioning perfectly, and oozing with vintage green monster charm.

Zero issues with any buttons.

Encoders all work as new, except encoder #2 which sliiiiightly stutters in the upward direction (no stutter issue in downward direction) but works fine when moving the knob slowly and will return to normal functionality with further twiddling. These encoders need regular movement to keep the contacts clean from oxidation. It has not been used very much for the last couple years so the one knob is slightly acting up. I know this because earlier this year after not using it for a while, many knobs were acting slightly skippy, but after 5 minutes of use they returned to normal function. Just this one knob still needs a bit of a wake up. Shouldn’t be much more than a temporary irritation."

Comparing Juno-X vs Original Juno-106: Patch Match From Scratch!

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"The comparison you're dying to hear! Two synths enter, but only one will be crowned KING!
Ok actually they are both *awesome* machines, but today's experiment is to show of how close we can get the newly announced Juno-X to the classic 106 from 1984 that inspired it.

We'll start with a initialized patch and build the sounds up as closely as we possibly can.

That being said, my poor old 106 is approaching 40 years old now and it has its own set of quirks and issues. After about an hour the outputs start to crackle and a some of the faders and pots are a bit scratchy or skippy. Its still an amazing sounding instrument tho, and the Juno-X really holds up to that legacy.

Check it out! And let me know what you think."

New Korg Wavestate Wave Sequencing Synthesizer Revealed

Published on Jan 6, 2020 Korg

Update: Details are in... Playlist with the first user videos added below.

"Legendary synthesis, radically re-imagined. Organic, inspirational, and mind-blowingly powerful.

KORG’s legendary Wavestation introduced the world to Wave Sequencing, transforming raw samples into sounds that no-one had ever heard before. The flagship OASYS and KRONOS keyboards developed Wave Sequencing even further, expanding on its unique palette of lush, evolving pads and driving rhythms.

Now, KORG is proud to announce the next step in digital synthesis: the wavestate. Featuring the radically re-imagined Wave Sequencing 2.0, the wavestate delivers astonishing, ever-changing sounds with extensive hands-on control.

Far from a nostalgic reissue, the wavestate is designed from the ground up for a new generation of musicians, producers, and composers, taking cues from sources as diverse as modular synths, groove boxes, and algorithmic composition. The compact form-factor, with 37 full-size keys, transports easily and fits neatly into any stage, studio, or desktop setup."

Highlights:

"With the Wavestation, each step of a Wave Sequence had a duration, a sample, and a pitch. This created ear-catching patterns–but the patterns repeated the same way, over and over. What if they could evolve in organic, unexpected ways, instead of just repeating?

Wave Sequencing 2.0 splits apart the timing, the sequence of samples, and the melody, so that each can be manipulated independently. Also added are new characteristics including shapes, gate times, and step sequencer values. Each of these is a “Lane,” and each Lane can have a different number of steps and its own start, end, and loop points.

Every time the sequence moves forward, the individual Lanes are combined to create the output. For instance, a sample may be matched with a different duration, pitch, shape, gate length, and step sequence value every time that it plays. You can modulate each Lane’s start, end, and loop points separately for every note, using velocity, LFOs, envelopes, Mod Knobs, or other controllers. Each note in a chord can be playing something different!

Lanes can also randomize the step order every time they play, with realtime control over the range of included steps. Finally, individual steps can be randomly skipped, with a modulatable probability from 0 to 100%. The result is organic, ever-changing sounds that respond to your control. The four onboard arpeggiators can interact with Wave Sequences for even more possibilities."

"KORG R&D created the original Wavestation, co-created the OASYS and Kronos, and has developed fundamental technologies behind many other KORG instruments. The wavestate reflects their unique aesthetic, delivering stunning sound and deep flexibility via cutting-edge technologies.

Three of the key sound designers from the original Wavestation, John Bowen [of John Bowen Synth Design & the Solaris], John “Skippy” Lehmkuhl (Plugin Guru), and Peter “Ski” Schwartz, joined Belgian artist Airwave and the renowned KORG voicing team to create the incredible wavestate sound library."

"Bursting with knobs and controllers, the wavestate invites you to explore. All of the basics–filter, envelopes, LFOs, effects–are at your fingertips with dedicated front-panel controls. Eight programmable Mod Knobs are customized to bring out the most in every sound, often taking them in entirely new directions. Use the knobs in realtime performance, and also save the results as new sounds. Add in the Pitch Bend and Modulation Wheels and the unique Vector Joystick, and you’ll always have multiple dimensions of realtime expression.

Want to dig deeper? Almost all front-panel knobs, and most on-screen parameters, can be modulated. You can even modulate settings for individual Wave Sequence Steps! Mod Processors let you transform modulation signals using quantization, smoothing, curvature, and more."

"Randomization that inspires.

Looking for even more inspiration? A dedicated front-panel button, marked by a “dice” icon, generates new sounds via intelligent randomization. Randomize the entire sound or just a part of it, such as the filter, the Sample Lane, or the effects. Use the results directly, or as a jumping-off point for your own creations.
An arsenal of effects.

The wavestate’s superb effects deliver production-ready sounds. Each Layer has three dedicated effects; additionally, the Performance has a master reverb and parametric EQ. Along with standards such as compressors, EQs, choruses, flangers, phasers, and stereo delays, you’ll find distinctive processors such as the Wave Shaper, Talking Modulator, Reverse Delay, Multiband Mod Delay, and Overb (from the OASYS), plus modeled effects including VOX guitar amps, VOX wah, multi-head tape echo, and a collection of classic guitar pedals."

"Choose your filter.

Add vintage character to your sounds with the aggressive MS-20 Lowpass or Highpass filters, or the strong, sweet Polysix Lowpass. Shape and refine with a full collection of resonant 2-pole and 4-pole Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, and Band Reject filters. Or, step outside the box with KORG’s unique Multi Filter, which creates modulatable blends of multiple modes simultaneously.
Ample samples. 64 stereo voices.

Totaling in the gigabytes, the wavestate’s sample library is more than a thousand times larger than that of the original Wavestation. That’s a lot of great-sounding raw material for Wave Sequences. There’s a bank of samples from Plugin Guru, brand-new samples from KORG, and a selection from the Kronos and Krome libraries. Of course, KORG also provides all of the Wavestation’s samples (including all options), plus a huge library of Wavestation Wave Sequences. Play up to 64 stereo voices with pristine clarity, using KORG’s proprietary anti-aliasing sample playback technology."

"Multiply by four.

With all of that synthesis power, you might think the wavestate would play only one sound at a time. Not a chance. For even more rich and complex results, layer up to four Programs together in a Performance–each with their own effects and arpeggiator. The Vector Envelope and Joystick mix the individual voices of the four Layers, and can also modulate any other parameters."

"Set Lists and Smooth Sound Transitions.

Set Lists offer effortless organization of your wavestate Performances, and deliver instant access at the gig or in rehearsal. Smooth Sound Transitions allow previously-played voices and effects to continue to ring out naturally, even once a new sound has been selected.
Plays well with others.

Balanced stereo outputs connect to any recording or monitoring system, and a stereo headphone output is provided for private playing or onstage cueing. Din-style MIDI jacks ensure connection to other MIDI-equipped instruments and audio gear. The wavestate supports class-compliant USB MIDI connections to Windows and Mac computers, and the wavestate librarian program is available as free download from KORG."

Saita Limassol_Minimal Input

Published on Mar 22, 2018 MrSharps02

"almost everything in this particular track is coming from the modular. there are two single voice pads from the analog four and a sampled chord playing every two bars from the octatrack, but the drums, bass, and blippy skippy sound effects are all modular.

sequencing is entirely octatrack, using the cv outs from the analog four via midi to trigger drums and a pittsburgh midi module to sequence the bassline. ornament and crime is distributing four lfos to the WMD sequential switch matrix which is distributing them to... pretty much everything. clouds is processing it all and freezing/skipping/slicing things rhythmically with the help of some clocks from pams new workout.

drums are peaks for kick/snare, plonk for plonks, shapeshifter for bips and wibbles. bass is a dixie 2 through a korgasmatron.

"Yes! Yes! And again Yes!

Or Top! Great! And Awesome!

With HyperOscillator 1! HyperOscillator 2 and 1 SubOscillator!
And Super Saw! Super Square and Super Triangle!
And Dual Filters! Vocoder! And Effects!
And Arpeggiator! "Sequencer" and 2 XY Pads!
Also the Virtual Midi, Wist, Sonoma AudioCopy, AudioShare, Open in, Soundcloud, Email, Wifi File Sharing and iTunes File Sharing!
With Sunsine Audio and John 'Skippy' Lehmkuh presets!
Arctic ProSynth is already one of my favourite synthesizers!

Combine the 2 HyperOscillators, the SubOscillator and the SuperSaw, Super Square and Super Triangle to create fat sounds like I love, in a vintage style.
Use the Dual Filters, and re order the routing of the 6 included Effects (Reverb, Eq, Distortion, Delay, Chorus and Phaser) to put the finishing touch and use the Vocoder to give a unique edge to it!
Use the Arpeggiator with the 4 track Sequencer (notes, volume, filters... 30 parameters to choose from...) to create a unique sequence. Or use the Sequencer to play an impossible sequence with only one finger!
But don't worry, if you can't manage to create the sounds you like, go and find a lot of great Presets in the built in Library, created by John Lehmkuh who used to work for Korg as a professional sound designer from 1988 - making patches, combinations, drum kits as well as creating the sample data for almost every synth Korg has released since the M1. And if you don't find your salvation here, go straight on to the Sunsine Audio Preset Library! For the other features: Audiobus, Sonoma AudioCopy, AudioShare, Open in, Core midi, Virtual Midi, Wist!
Ok! Did I forget something...?
Yes, I love it! I'm totally convinced by the sound types that you can generate with it!
A Must Have!"

"Be rude. Be rough. Be bold. Be tough!

Arctic Pro Synthesizer / Vocoder is a modern subtractive synthesizer. It does not aim to accurately model or re-create vintage synths of yesteryear. Instead Arctic Pro offers the contemporary synthesist a rude, rough, bold and tough palette of sound to get stuck into. Published on Oct 23, 2012 by shagghie

"This is the studio pre-run video take and live un-edited HQ audio leading up to the amazing Toorcon.org underground warehouse party in San Diego on Oct 20th, 2012. This set was performed in front of several hundred of the world's best hackers... no ordinary party, and it was quite a show! Mad respect to h1kari, nfiltr8, and geo for one of the best 'cons in many many years, and to Qualcomm for helping fund the sound and ever-flowing bar tab. Set is performed on a pair of Elektron Octatracks and a Machinedrum and some in-line FX, all mixed on the Octatrack and into the house mixer. Down and dirty Detroit style techno and house with a nod to the old guard trance coming out of the early 90's...all with a modern Elektron performance style twist. Tradition and Future, Liberation of the Machines in true hacker form. Shouts to Dreamlabs, Skippy, Marcel and the ever-sexy Katy Rokit, whose vocal samples are woven throughout the set."
