"An American-made, analog drum machine with a distinctively woody tone and a remarkable feature no other drum machine posses - Modulation.

Swipe for a demonstration of how it operates [video previously posted here]

On the back is an audio input for modulating external instruments like guitar, organ or why not a string machine? Much like a side chain compressor, the external signal gets muted by the individual drum hits of the rhythm pattern engaged, almost like a tremolo but rhythmically syncopated.

There’s a slider to control the level of audible drums or instrument input signal.

10 drum sounds and 16 rhythm patterns are available to the user.

No individual volumes are at our disposal but a slider to emphasize the brighter or bass-y drum sounds.

Excellent condition unit with a small bump on the front wood panel.

110 Volt power with standard American power connector."

Waldorf Pulse & Pulse 2 - Don Solaris Soundset

video upload by Don Solaris

"Available at: https://www.donsolaris.com/?page_id=3633

Why DCOs? Unlike traditional VCOs (voltage-controlled oscillators), DCOs maintain consistent pitch and phase – which may sound like a subtle difference, but in practice, it’s key to achieving harder, tighter, and more aggressive bass. DCO-based synths like the Pulse don’t drift or smear. They hit with precision, punch, and presence, which is especially crucial when you want bass that stays locked in with your drums and doesn’t fall apart under compression or saturation."

Crashing down | Moog Minimoog, Sequentix Cirklon, Sequential Prophet 10, DSI Prophet 12, Nord Drum 2

video upload by MIDERA

"I was considering selling the Minimoog. Kept talking to friends about how I just didn't like it. I don't know why, I guess maybe it was like with the Prophet 10, where it's just a lot of money and it doesn't really seem to do anything that much better than what I already have. One of my friends said 'Well, have you tried sequencing it?' And no... I hadn't. I got the Minimoog when one of my cats died, then I rehomed my dog, and then my mom died. The whole next year (2024) I spent scanning photos in of my parent's. Only now have I started to get back into things. Well, I decided to try it out and wow, I really enjoyed it - the Minimoog sounds pretty amazing. So this is my first track with it sequenced.

I'm also working on trying to get more proficient with the Cirklon, and I've gotten a little hold on using it.

Parts:
Moog Minimoog: Bass
DSI Prophet 12: Bells
Sequential Prophet 10: Pads
Clavia Nord Drum 2: Drums
Sequentix Cirklon: Sequencing
Native Instruments Raum: Reverb"

Roger Linn, Creator of the Original Namesake LinnDrum on Behringer's New LmDrum

The following is Roger Linn's statement on Behringer's LmDrum, written Jan 4, 2025, saved here for the MATRIXSYNTH archives:

In December 2024, Behringer released their "LmDrum", which is described on their site as:

"If you are looking for a drum machine that can recreate the classic sound of the 80’s, look no further than the Behringer LM DRUM. This amazing drum machine features an authentic 8/12-bit sampling sound engine that captures the essence of a hundred legendary 80’s drum sounds including those designed by Roger Linn such as the LM1*, LM2*, LM9000* and more. You can even record and store your own samples using the integrated line input."

Uli Behringer kindly sent me an LmDrum in August of 2024, giving me a chance to try it out. What do I think? I think it's a bit of a head-scratcher. It is clearly intended to evoke my 1982 "LinnDrum" drum machine, borrowing its visual style, control layout, colors and logo style, as well as copying its sounds and those of my LM-1 and Linn9000 drum machines. I took it apart and it even copies much of my LinnDrum sound generation circuit, even my bad ideas like the inability to tune any drums except the snare, toms and congas.

However, it uses an entirely different operating system and user interface, one that is based on earlier Behinger drum machines. Personally, I found it somewhat confusing and difficult to use, though I was given an unfinished manual. I'd imagine they will improve both the software and manual over time. I suspect the designers found it difficult to find a balance between 1) the impression of a LinnDrum clone, and 2) the addition of modern features, given that the 1982 LinnDrum's feature set is woefully inadequate by today's standards.

It's worth noting that Uli never asked my permission to either copy my visual design or my drum sounds. Though in 2020, he did kindly invite me to collaborate on a future drum machine, and I respectfully declined because of concern about Behringer's past business ethics and legal practices.

How do I feel about the LmDrum? My feelings are mixed. On the one hand, it's not unusual for companies to borrow ideas from older products in order to inspire a new and innovative design, which I've done in past. Plus, my old drum sounds are all over the web, controlling copying is difficult, and I don't enjoy legal stuff so I've generally ignored the issue so far. Also, the value in those old sounds is probably due more to Art Wood (the drummer who played the sounds, and my friend of many years), and to artists like Prince, Michael Jackson, and others, who made those sounds famous on their hits. Finally, I must admit that I've never cared much about the past, because I find the future far more exciting.

On the other hand, even if we discount the copying of the visual design, logo style and sound circuit of LinnDrum, the LmDrum copies my sounds. So I'd have preferred for Uli to ask my permission. Even if he thinks it is legal, I question whether it is ethical.

I find it interesting that the LmDrum is being sold in the U.S. for only $399. Having taken it apart and seeing how complex the copied old circuitry was to reproduce, I doubt Behringer is making any money from it. I suspect that they originally intended to sell it for much more, then discovered that while many people may say they want a LinnDrum clone, few are willing to pay more than a low price for it.

On a related topic, GForce Software has recently released their "IconDrum" software drum sound generator. Like the LmDrum, it copies the LinnDrum's visual design, logo style, and drum sounds, but has no sequencing. Unlike Behringer, GForce did say they wouldn't release the product if I objected, but they seemed like good people so I turned a blind eye. They also offered to pay me an insignificant royalty for my association with the product and perhaps to use "LinnDrum" name, but I declined because of the low compensation and because I thought it was misleading to call a product "LinnDrum" that wasn't a drum machine but rather only played my copied drum sounds.

One last comment. What's the big deal about nostalgia? I can understand that some people value analog synthesis, though I find the many types of innovative software synthesis created in recent decades to be far more capable, versatile and interesting. But even if people value vintage analog synths, why vintage digital drum machines? I ask this because an old bit is no different than a new bit. Our collective love of nostalgia brings to mind an old Douglas Adams quote from Salmon of Doubt:

"I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things."

As a guitarist, I recall having endless discussions in my youth about "good distortion". :)

New ULT-SOUND DS-4M Drum Synth Demos

video upload by Korablove Roman

Available at Nightlife Electronics

You can find additional demos in previous posts here.

"The DS-4 drum synth, which was released by Toyo Gakki in the 1980s under the "ULT--SOUND" brand and was used by the drummers of Japan's leading techno-pop group, has been revived in modern times. An inspiration for many modern drum machines, the DS-4 is heavily sought after for it's immediacy and ease of programming. As a 45 year old drum synthesizer, finding an original for a reasonable price without needing a complete restoration is not the easiest task. This is why the DS-4M project was brought into existence. Using all original schematics as well as original components, many of which are incredibly rare to find, the DS-4M is meticulously built by hand using thru-hole components. Physically, it is built like a tank to last for decades of enjoyment and creativity. What's more, modern MIDI and CV/GATE inputs have been added along with individual outputs and a high quality, balanced MAIN output ready to take the legacy of the Ultimate Sound DS-4 far into the future. The new functions also add an exciting twist: using the SINE or SQUARE waveforms, DS-4M also works as an up to 4 voice synthesizer, or any combination of drums/percussion with synths with accurate tuning as well"

Sonicware AMBIENT Ø - PATTERN CHAINING "Time Variant"

video upload by Alba Ecstasy

"A few hours later I made this 👉 [AMBIENT Ø - The Perfect Ambient Companion] I thought that I could do more with that idea, so I made another video I didn't published (it's a version of the middle part of this video) because later I wanted to get more. So I recorded this track. After many hours of tweaking I must have to admit!
I knew I can do more than that an ambient atmosphere with the Ambient 0: a sequencing and arpeggiating that would suit my style. It's a little more to dig, but it can be obtained with this ambient machine. Behringer EDGE accompanying for drums. Which I forgot to sync: see that yellow patch cable? I disconnected it before recording. Don't know why 😂
No external FX.

Ignore that fake 'tremolo' playing, but I wish I could do that with the Ambient Ø (I really need the OSMOSE 😅)!

Hope you'll enjoy!"

FFS - For Fuzz Sake (Super Fuzz Face!) || By After Later Audio

"Two fuzz channels based on the fuzz face circuit with a built-in pickup simulator.

Gnarly is a 7 knob beast that will destroy whatever you throw at it. It has many dead zones in the pots that will adjust based on the position of other pots. It's all about finding the sweet spots and living on those fine edges. The transistor pairs on this section are replaceable.

Oomph is a 5 knob bass friendly take on the fuzz face and compliments the upper harmonics of the Gnarly section. Pickup simulator - Fuzz circuits offer unique sound when paired with the inductance of the pickup coils in a guitar. This why it is often suggested to have fuzz pedals as your first in a pedal chain. So we've built-in a coil to simulate your eurorack signal being emitted by a guitar pickup. We've also included a pickup simulator output so you can use it to interface with other fuzz instruments (pedals, modules, etc.). As an added oddness - you can also input your guitar into the pickup sim output (just don't plug anything into the normal input). This will still get you Eurorack level output. Please don't input Eurorack levels into the pickup sim output.

Tips - Experiment with the pickup simulator and buffered signal. Use the PS.Level to keep the signal low, borderline on cutting out. You find lots of joy in the gnarly section by keeping this level at the edge."

Roland P-6 VS MPC60ii Sound Test! They're both dope!

video upload by Ricky Tinez

"I wanted to see if the Roland P-6 could replace my MPC 60ii when it comes to texture and sound quality, TL:DR nope. BUT the P-6 definitely has its own sound that is unique to itself."

Gieskes - LFSR2R Sequencer/Generator

Additional NOISEBUG Listings

"A module that has a few different functions, Sequencer, LFSR Noise generator, Semi random CV generator.

The LFSR2R refers to LFSR + R2R. A LFSR is a Linear Feedback Shift Register, and R/2R is a Resistor Netork that is used to convert digital binary outputs to voltages (DAC, Digital Analog Converter). This is what a Digital to analogue converter mostly uses. I chose this name because it its what is in the module + some more. It was not the goal when i started making this module, but it a nice name.

I developed it because i needed a sequencer that works good for drums, especially with the vu-perc modules. The vu-perc module responds to gate signals, and they hit harder or softer depending if the voltages of the gate signal is higher or lower.

This module has a CV input that can be used to modulate the voltage that comes out of all gate outputs (like the starving binary module). This way the volume of the vu-perc modules can be modulated.

There are two versions one with LED's sticking thru and one with LED's that light from the back. From the back it looks nicer but during day light it will be less visible. Thats why i made two versions T (8 step LED's are THT, they stick tru the top panel) And version S (SMD, the 8 step leds are on the PCB)."

"KEYBOARDISTS & MUSICIANS FROM THE ELECTRONIC/PROGRESSIVE ROCK FIELD OF BRAZIL

ELECTRONIC KEYBOARDS FROM BRAZIL
(Video Show - Collective Clip by Amyr Cantusio Jr)
Here are several keyboardists, electronic engineers, amateur musicians and some professionals who move the national scene, in a universe almost unknown to the people themselves.
These are videos that I collected, all of whom I know personally, to give lovers of the genre a perspective of what is produced behind the scenes in the underworld of electronic, electro-acoustic and progressive music in Brazil.
There are no critics in the area, almost no magazines or articles that cover or publicize these works. So here is a General Synopsis for you:

1-Arthur Joly (S.P. Engineer and producer, creator of the Big Modular Synthesizer Reco-Synth.
2-PAULO BETO (S.P.) - Anvil X and Solo.Paulo He worked on a lot of things, including Joly. I don't know why his work is so little publicized.
3-JOSE D'ELBOUX (S.P.)-Recorded 2 CDs with his project Tau Ceti. It is one of the few groups in Brazil where the Power Trio format with only keyboards/drums and bass is used, besides myself.
4-RONALDO RODRIGUES (Campinas S.P./R.J.) Caravela Escarlate. Also only known in the specific field.
5-VINICIUS BRAZIL (R.J.) engineer who created the Lizard Synths line. He also recorded a CD with the band Aether.
6-PATRICK WICHROVSKY- (R.J.) Has an independent triple CD "Eram os Deuses Astronautas" and played in some progressive bands. 7-VENTO AZUL DO SOM-(SE) Marcio and Marcelo Prata. They are heroic creators of "synth scraps", with almost no resources, and they even recorded LPs and some independent tapes on their own. They are very experimental in electro-acoustics.
8-GUSTAVO JOBIM (R.J.) has many CDs and work recorded independently, and very restricted to the underground circuit.
9-ELOY FRITSCH (R.S.) one of the most famous, with several solo CDs, and his band Apocalypse (which despite being known abroad, in Brazil is almost completely unknown) covers and professional work. Eloy is a professor at UFRGS.
10-EDGAR FRANCO (GO) Lyricist, illustrator and PhD in Visual Arts, has several multimedia works on CDs, magazines, etc... Also like Eloy, a professor at UFRGN. 11-FABIO RIBEIRO (S.P.) Also famous for having played in the underground band III Milenio (LP), Blezqi Zatsaz (solo LP) and Angra (CD).
12-ALPHA III (Amyr Cantusio Jr) (Campinas S.P.) - my Project, perhaps the most famous for the body of work (LPS and CDS) that luckily reached more than 20 countries, in the Underground as well, with a relevance relative to the medium only."

Meng Qi Wing Pinger + Eventide H90 // Shadows and Lights

video upload by Dexba

"The Wing Pinger is not easy to process: it sports two outputs which are... double mono?
Not really, and I will show you why soon in the upcoming tutorial (long in the making, I know).
But that's also why I decided to keep one pedal, and that pedal is the H90, which allows for extensive customization of the inputs, and it's modular in its own way.
I created this new preset for the Eventide H90, called Noise Glue, which is a combination of a 4-head delay + tape saturation to keep everything cohesive, and I think it complements beautifully the sound echoing war chants and drums on the battlefield, juxtaposed to the few plucks of melodic rain here and there.
It is always very hard to share a recording of the Wing Pinger, because the lengthy drones and ear-massaging FM sounds do not translate well as a format on YouTube or as a recording: it really is an instrument to be touched and felt."

Compact jam on Circuit Tracks & MicroMonsta 2

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

Sometimes it's nice to go back to the basics. The Novation Circuit was my entry point to the world of hardware in 2018, and while I've mostly moved on from the Circuit, it's so nice to go back to sometimes. Here, I'm using the Circuit Tracks—a worthy successor to the original, thanks to its additional two sequencing tracks—for two synths and drums, plus as the sequencer and mixer for the additional voices from the Audiothingies MicroMonsta 2.

The MicroMonsta 2 is one of those handy devices that does exactly what you need when you need it. It's super small and fits in any table setup, is bitimbral, has effects, and most importantly, sounds pretty good. Here, I stumbled into a sort of arp/pad crossover thing (thought I was recording a mono line, and accidentally recorded some pleasing polyphony) and, thanks to the hands-on filter control and its reverb, got me a lot of movement. For the second voice, I thought I'd demonstrate the less polite side of the MM2, and I love how huge the bass sound is. I only wish the MM2 were more readily available for those who want it!

Together, this little setup gives me four voices of synths, drums, effects, sidechaining to the kick, and some performance options. It was a great reminder of why I fell in love with grooveboxes, and why I love hardware in general.

Thanks for listening.

Novation Circuit Tracks - two synths, four drums, effects, mixing
Audiothingies MicroMonsta 2 - two synths with effects, routed into the Circuit Tracks

Those left behind | Spectralis 2 and Sequential Prophet 10

video upload by MIDERA

"I received the email - I got to the top of the queue for the Cirklon. Why did I even sign up for it? I spent 3 years not preparing for it, just assuming some day I would have to make a decision, and now I'm here. What would it do for me I can't already do? My Spectralis does all I need, albeit, in maybe not the best way possible - but is there a best way? Sure, I can see the Cirklon does more, better, faster, but also maybe does things I don't care about.

I actually hate having a lot of gear hooked up. Slows me down. 3-4 pieces is good enough for me. If you can't make a song with only a few instruments, then I question whether you can make music at all (Ok, that's just me talking to myself about my own capacities - huge orchestras are built off of tons of instruments, I get it). What I make is simple, sad, and that's it. My music only speaks to me saying: some day - you will not be among the living and this music is being made to haunt those left behind.

I know the Cirklon is the 'best sequencer' out there... so maybe I just need to buy it and see for myself. I do know the Spectralis does stuff I really enjoy, like sequencing itself and other gear, using it as an FX processor to manipulate all sorts of things to the beat. Just a unique piece... I also know it so well.

TR-909 Firmware Version 5 Demos

See this post for details.

Playlist:

1. TR-909 FIRMWARE VERSION 5 UPGRADE!!!
// The most wonderful thing that could have ever happened for Roland TR-909 owners and lovers has actually happened.
2. TR-909 FIRMWARE V.5 - Demonstration 1 - MIDI SYNC CORRECTION
// I’ve installed one of the first Revolution 909 firmware upgrades from Addictive Instruments into my own personal Roland TR-909 and I released a little enthusiastic clip about how delighted I am to have 33 year old serious problems resolved. This is the first of a few posts planned for today to show you why it’s so amazing to me.
3. TR-909 FIRMWARE VERSION 5 - Demonstration 2 - SWITCH BETWEEN PLAY AND WRITE MODE IN REAL TIME
// This is something that I’ve been thinking about since 1991 when I first got my own TR-909: The ability to switch between pattern play and pattern write without having to stop the sequencer.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The TR-909 in pattern write mode allows us to do some clever things. We can change the length of the pattern using last step, and we can add and subtract notes and accents (internal and external) to develop our pattern. However, we can only do this in write mode.
So in order to do these things in performance we have to A ) stop, change modes, and start again B ) stay in write mode always (can’t change patterns in write mode) C ) program our drums from another device entirely D ) add all the chaos, and then use the level knobs to bring sounds in and out (the way maestro Jeff Mills makes magic!) or E ) make a ton of patterns ahead of time and switch between them as our performance.
We can do mutes on a mixer, use a midi controller. There are options, but when I’m playing live it’s just me. I have stuff happening. It’s a lot to navigate and keep track of. Changing mixer settings, dealing with midi controllers, or even flipping through preset patterns can be distracting and a bummer. Adding the ability to just get into write mode and change the length for a fill, or a sidetrack, or a totally new in the moment idea is fantastic!
4. TR-909 FIRMWARE VERSION 5- Demonstration 3 - MUTES
// This is something which I didn’t anticipate being so amazing. I use mutes on the mixer as a fundamental part of how I perform live, but I don’t tend to reach for instrument mute functions on the actual devices. This is not a personal bias, but rather a point of clarity. I’m doing like 25 things at once in any given performance (and singing) so it’s pretty easy to forget what I’ve muted or un muted unless it’s in central place (like on the mixer), but after all I just explored in demonstration clip 2 about ways to add and subtract sounds live, mutes are a marvelous and really powerful addition to this list of ways to address patten complexity in a live performance.
5. TR-909 FIRMWARE VERSION 5 - Demonstration 4 - INSTANT PATTERN CHANGES
// Ok, this is really simple, but it’s so super extra totally bad ass.

Fig.1 INSTANT PATTERN CHANGES
The thing about the TR-909 is that it doesn’t instantly change patterns. You have to wait for the end, and then it starts the next selected pattern. To get around this you can do some stuff:
• make some really complicated patterns
• make one big complex pattern and then use the mixer to bring things in and out (fun!)
But this is fantastic! Just hold down shift and start instantly jumping between patterns. Add a crash from a crashy pattern, start a fill, and switch to just a kick drum, mix and match patterns and really get something heavy going - THEN get involved with the mixer, and it’s a gorgeous avalanche of TR-909 awesome!

In my example here I’m just showing you that it’s possible now. The rest is up to you.

Addictive Instruments have released firmware version 5 for the Roland TR-909 and the RE-909. It’s a real upgrade which requires soldering and while it isn’t easily reversible, the upgrade also includes firmware v1 and v4 so you can revert by choosing another firmware and booting it that way (no one would ever know).

This first batch is limited to 100 so if you’re as happy about this as I am, hurry up!
That said, I believe in these guys and totally hope that this all goes well, and this will continue to be available (and more!) until all the TR/RE-909’s have one inside.

This was demo 4, one more and I’ll leave the rest to you.
6. TR-909 FIRMWARE VERSION 5 - Demonstration 5 - EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT
// I’ve been using the EXT INST function of the Roland TR-909 since the day I got it. I love triggering samples, basslines, and other drum machines from the stately TR-909’s main panel. The hassle has always been that the notes it generates can’t be changed. So you get an octave or so of fixed notes and that’s all. I’ve spent a lot of time messing with samplers and getting the sounds I want to trigger from the notes I have to offer, and while it’s fun, and useful, it can be a drag. Fact is, a lot of people never even explored it.

Fig.1 CENTRAL CONTROL WITH TR-727
The TR-727 doesn’t allow us to control its midi notes either, but the Addictive Instruments firmware v.5 update has presets and it has a user mode (fig.2). So we can play any note we want on any channel we want at any velocity we want now.
My 727 is upgraded with Harry Axten‘s perfect sound rom upgrade, and this is my own custom rom, and here it is being beautifully programmed by my beloved TR-909!

Fig.3 BASSLINE
This is an example of using the user template to create a chromatic keyboard and programming a bassline which is saved with my drums, and subject to all the new and original functions of the 909.
So much fun!

Clearly I was already in love with my TR-909, but I’ve fallen all over again here.

The external instrument mode is expanded, and it much more powerful now, it’s also nicely documented (at last) in the manual. It is more complicated than plug it in and go if you want to make the most of it, and it’s worth it. This is something wonderful.
