"I just wanted to mention that an OS update for the Little Phatty has been released, OS version 1.03c. Among other things, this new OS adds a "Poly" mode, which allows you to chain together any combination of LP and Voyager synths together via MIDI for up to 16-note polyphony controlled from one master keyboard or MIDI sequencer. I have set up a 4-voice system using two LPs and two Voyager racks, and it's pretty cool.

Ensoniq ESQ1 Emulating a TB-303

I thought you might like to share this with your readers, it's an MP3 of my Ensoniq ESQ1 trying to sound like a 303.
It took about an hour to make/tweak the patch. All sequencing and drums are from an MPC1000, there's a little slapback delay on the ESQ1, and some reverb on the drums. The ESQ1 would've sounded better with some compression but then, so does my 303.
I won't be selling the 303 just yet but it's a nice sound. The big difference of course is that I had to spend ages programming all the note velocities and portamento, and remember what range of filter and envelope settings the patch sounds good within, whereas a 303 practically writes good patterns for you and sounds good whatever you do with the knobs :)
By the way, it's not trying to be a good track, just a demo of the sound!"

Klaus Schulze Black Quasimidi Polymorphs
Saw this posted on VSE by Shagghie.
"I'm forced to depart with the most incredible example of a quasimidi polymorph ever. It is one of K.S.'s black polymorphs from his 'wall' tour, complete with the original 'moogy' knobs he prefered, and running the latest OS and restore to original settings/condition. This is the one to own...and it sounds amazing. One of those pieces I swore I'd never sell...but life and finances are really pressing right now, and I'm not able to use it like it deserves to be used. I will include original manual, original PSU, and the black hard-case I store it in with custom foam fitting.
It's one of these, though I am not sure which one...perhaps the one he's reaching for?

I didn't realize they were Black and made for Klaus Schulze with MOOG style knobs. If anyone has any close up shots of it, post a comment. I sent Shagghie a PM to see if he can take some for us before it sells. Update via Shagghie: "Hey Matrix....I did some digging at the request of someone and apparently Manikin Electronic (http://www.manikin-electronic.com) made a half dozen of these "Special edition black K.S. Polymorphs" that were a continuation on the 'K.S. factory run' they did for his wall originally in the first place. Still, a very limited/rare piece, however! Hence, i can't be positive that this actual unit is from K.S.'s wall! I don't want to give any wrong impressions given the way the post currently reads. "The MOTM-940 is used to interface between the MOTM system and other synthesizers or audio equipment that uses 3.5mm or banana jacks, so you can integrate voltage and audio signals from modular synths(such as Buchla, Serge, Modcan, and Wiard) or other instruments that don’t use 1/4-inch cords. Although in a 2U x 5U sized panel, the MOTM-940 can be integrated into any studio to patch between synthesizers without costly custom cables.
The top portion of the MOTM-940 consists of 6 sets of 1/4", 3.5mm (also referred to as 1/8") and banana jacks. Each jack is connected to the others, as are all grounds. The banana jack has an associated grounding jack spaced 3/4" away so that standard dual banana plugs can easily be used. Each banana signal jack is a different color.
Across the bottom of the panel are 2 4-way multiples using 1/4" jacks. Each mult group gives you as many as three output signals from one input.
The MOTM-940 uses Switchcraft 1/4" and 3.5mm jacks and heavy-duty E.F. Johnson banana jacks to provide years of reliable service. The front panel (like all MOTM products) is 1/8" aircraft aluminum, precision milled to 0.003" tolerance. The word "flimsy" does not apply."

"I'll try and be as detailed as possible about this very rare drum machine. This Linn LM 1 is one of only 500 ever made worldwide. This is THE classic drum machine of the 80's - it launched the drum machine revolution! The Linn LM-1 Drum Computer was created by guitarist Roger Linn and he used samples of acoustic drum sounds. At the time, they sounded great and much more realistic and they were a fresh alternative to the analog drum sounds of the '80's drum machines. About 500 LM-1's were made before the LinnDrum model appeared in 1982. There are twelve 28kHz samples including: snare, kick, three toms, hi-hat's, tambourine, congas, claps, cowbell, and rimshot, but no ride or crash. There are also 100 memory patches! Patterns can be created in real or step time. An innovations of the time was the swing and quantize functions that appeared on the LM-1. The LM-1 is an historical synth that has a place in the sound of music from the heart of the '80's. Only 500 of these things are out there so don't count on finding one easily. It has been used by Phil Collins, Thompson Twins, Stevie Wonder, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, The Human League, Jean-Michel Jarre, John Carpenter, Todd Rundgren, Prince, and The Art of Noise. Progsounds Program Switcher Beta 1
"This program let's you assign a Midi CC# (that will be filtered out) to send Program Change messages sequentally, giving a threshold value. It is recommended to use it with some kind of virtual midi ports such as Midi Yoke. Comes as stand-alone exectuable and VSTi.How it works:
- Select a Midi CC# to use as program change. Example: your sustain
pedal (midi cc# 64)
- Choose the Threshold level. When the value will be greater or equal
the Threshold, a Program Change message will be sent.
- Tune Start and End value to your needs. This is the range you will
cycle during the patch change. When the last value will be reached,
the next will be the first one.
- Use the Reset button to reset the counter."

Optically Controlled Synth / Theremin

"This is an optically controlled noise maker (Sound Synthesizer). It comprises of three LDR's that control the sounds produced and the microprocessor controlled effects. There are three control knobs the forst is for LDR switching speed where the sound synthesis chip alternates between two LDR's measuring their values producing two different tones depending on the level of light falling on each. This effect creates strange sixties sci-fi sounds. The second knob controls the sine wave intensity which is handy when you apply effects like distortion and fuzz to the signal before amplification. The third knob controls the output volume.
There are several toggle switches on the unit. On the left hand side the first sets the device either for high or low pitch sounds ranging from low rumbling drones to high pitch chirps and whines. There is a power switch in the centre to turn the synth on and off. And a switch to select the LDR switching effect. The knobs on the right engage the microprocessor which measures values on the first LDR and does one of two things. The first thing it does is only allow the device to produce sound when a certain level of light has been reached which is useful when you don't want the unit to play itself (Be silent until you interact with it). The second microprocessor controlled effect toggle again sets a threshold which keeps the device silent until a certain level of light has been reached but this time it pulses the sound on and off increasing the speed of the pulses when the level of light on the LDR increases sort of like a built in tremolo effect.
There are three LED's the centre LED indicates power on and the other two the state of the two microprocessor controlled effects.
The unit is housed in an antique (19th century) handmade French jewelery box stamped with the mark of Pierre Dujardin Paris. I restored the box to make it as robust as possible and left the weird repairs and different layers of paint that had been applied by the many previous owners that give this device an authentic aged vintage look sort of like an old piece of lab equipment or a prop from a mad scientists lab.
Various other visual garnishes have been added such as the leather straps that hold the lid open and the foam that lines the inside of the lid.
(the inside is coated in a latex based plastic like preservative and pine sections have been added to the interior corners using epoxy)
This synth/noise maker theremin thingy runs off a 9V power supply, I'm including a brand new Boss PSA-230P (Still in box) with the unit.
The output is loud as its at about line level when the sine wave intensity is at max and the volume fully on.
The unit can be played with your hands or with light sources. Bike light produce the best effects, techno like beats can be created by selecting the flashing settings on the light and by placing them directly over the LDR's. I've recently discovered that by running the unit into an Electro Harmonix Guitar micro-synth a whole range of other sonic possibilities were presented.

"After watching the Jean Laurendeau Ondes Martenot video on youtube, I was inspired to seek out an Analogue Systems French Connection controller. It so happens that I came across a used unit, so I jumped on it. I received it two days ago and I was eager (perhaps too eager) to contribute a demo of my new toy to youtube. Yes, my intonation is questionable. My apologies.
All the music was generated exclusively with a (primarily Doepfer) modular synthesizer, one monophonic line at a time. This exercise is somewhat of a test balloon for a long form modular project I'm currently sketching out."

"I forwarded some photos of the Sonica innards and the Sonica manual to matrix. I'll try to forward some sound samples too. It's just a simple buzzy kind of triangle wave. A very pleasing mellow tone. Pressing on the Tone pad sort of opens the filter a tiny bit more. It's not some amazing synth, but it wasn't meant to be. It's easy
and fun to play and that was the intent. Also, when I got mine, I was surprised how small it is, it's only 18" It doesn't need to be any bigger, I just thought it would be for some reason.
