AMIN BHATIA SEPTEMBER E-NEWS

If you aren't familiar with Amin Bhatia, see this post.

"Thanks to all who have made "Virtuality" a part of their virtual or real record collections. This new album from Amin is getting great reviews in print and on the net.

"...this is a must listen " Michael Gallant, Keyboard Magazine
"...a worthy successor to the legacy of The Interstellar Suite" Craig Anderton, EQ Magazine

Our thanks also to the many Interstellar Suite fans who've sent personal replies and reviews to this sequel album. Because Amin has been busy on the Flashpoint tv series he has not had time to respond (even to close friends and family) but we're catching up on the backlog now. In the meantime please continue to pass along the good word on "Virtuality" with guests Steve Porcaro and Patrick Moraz. It's available on CDBaby and on iTunes and a portion of every sale goes to the Bob Moog foundation. Here's a link to point your friends to info about Amin Bhatia new album release.

"FLASHPOINT" SPARKS
The CBS/CTV new series "Flashpoint" is pulling in record ratings every week with compelling drama from the perspective of the tactical sniper police squad. The theme song and music score is composed by Amin Bhatia and Ari Posner. They are just finishing Season One as you read this and plans are already underway for Season Two. Read more here.

THE TRIBUTE TO BOB MOOG PODCAST
The first in a series of video podcasts about the "Virtuality" CD has made quite an impact because of its professional quality. The 7-minute video features dozens of artists including Amin Bhatia, Steve Porcaro, Patrick Moraz and Michelle Moog Koussa and talks about the far reaching influence of Bob Moog, to whom "Virtuality" is dedicated. See it here. Our thanks to the hundreds of video and audio professionals who donated their time and expertise to make such a high quality podcast....and yes, there are more coming!

THE VIRTUAL TOUR CONTINUES IN SECOND LIFE
It's fitting that that the virtual community of Second Life has embraced Virtuality. The virtual record release party at the Music Academy Online simm was a resounding success in both real and virtual worlds. It premiered the creation of a virtual museum featuring many of the 70 synthesizers used in "Bolero Electronica", as well a "Virtuality ride" through several musical pieces of the album. For more about Virtuality on Second Life you can learn more here.

AMIN 'GIVES BACK' TO THE ROLAND SYNTH CONTEST
As many of you may know, Amin Bhatia was one of the early recipients of the Roland International Synthesizer contest, winning the grand prize two consecutive years. His winning composition was the foundation for his album "The Interstellar Suite" and essentially launched his career in film and television composition. Roland is re-introducing the contest and Amin has been asked to act as one of the judges for this year's competition. Are you a synthesist or want to encourage one? Learn more here.

Interview with Hal Chamberlin

"Way back in 1980 a book titled "Musical Applications of Microprocessors" became the companion for many Engineers designing musical instruments in the 20th century. In 1985, the book was expanded from its original 660 pages to a whooping big 800-odd pages. Till this day, the book (albeit outdated) is still seen as a source of learning for many students in this field. The man who wrote that book is Hal Chamberlin.

For the last 16 years, Hal has been employed by Kurzweil (now known as Kurzweil Music Systems). There, he has been quietly working away on both hardware and software for the many products that Kurzweil make.

Sonikmatter caught up with Hal (at the Young Chang factory in Korea) while he was finishing up on his design of the "remote control" for the new Kurzweil KSP8 Effects Module. Here is what he had to say:" link

Third design, now abandoned in favor of the current design. Click the images for the full size shots.

via Roger Linn Design
"September 20, 2008:
I'm sorry to report that we won't be shipping in 2008 and I can't yet offer a new estimated ship date. The good news is that it's turned into a significantly more powerful and creative product. The bad news is that we'd prefer not to release details of the new design because it's so cool that I don't want to show our cards to the competition. However, I do want to thank all those who wrote in with suggestions because this interactive design process has very much helped to change what we thought the product originally should be into what we now know you really want. So please hold your questions while we're hard at work on it, and I'll be periodically updating this page as we release new information. If you'd like to be notified when we update this page with something significant, please click here to join our LinnDrum II email list.

For those of you who are new to LinnDrum II, its new subtitle is "Beat-Centric Digital Audio Workstation with Integrated Analog Synthesis". Inspired by how the MPC product line that I (Roger) originally created for Akai has evolved a new genre of musical instrument, LinnDrum II aspires to raise the bar beyond the current crop of high-end pad-oriented music production station products in order to enable musicians around the world to better realize the next wave of beat-oriented music.

- Roger and Dave
And for your amusement, here's the evolution of the LinnDrum II so far."

some details from tonymission on gearslutz:
"what i know:

Two versions will be available. $1000/1500 one is just for drum sampling like an MPC and the other will have 4 voices dedicated to prophet 8 synth engine if im understanding that correctly. the first sold through Roger Linn Designs, the other through Dave's company...

2008 is no longer the release "date/timeframe" ... early 2009 Linn is quoted as saying in his NAMM interview (youtube)

* Operating system is optimized for realtime live performance, with the ability to switch between beats, drop in and out of record on different beats, switch in and out of song mode and much more, all without stopping play.
* Digital voices have nearly the same signal and modulation path--including modulated filters and resonators--as shown on the LinnDrum II Analog panel. Total number of voices is not yet determined.
* 16 standard 1.1 inch square velocity- and pressure-sensitive drum pads, assignable to sounds, tunings, beats, track mutes, sound mutes or sequence steps.
* Both MPC-style real time and 808-style step recording are provided, and the 16 pads are backlit for visual animation.
* Real-time stereo digital effects on output mix--modulated multi-mode filtering, guitar amp model and bit/sample rate reduction distortion, modulated resonator, compressor, delay, reverb and EQ--with 6 dedicated on/off keys to switch them individually in or out in real time.
* Compact flash slot for data save/load/backup, or for expansion of internal sound storage.
* Internal RAM and flash size is yet to be decided; at least 16 mbytes for each.
* 128 x 64 dot graphic LCD.
* USB port for transferring samples and other files, MIDI messages and audio I/O to and from computer.
* 4 pushbutton soft knobs below the LCD, acting either as soft knobs or soft keys.
* 48 lit buttons for extensive real-time performance control.
* 2 sliders assignable to a large variety of real-time functions.
* HELP key gives descriptive text for any screen, data field, function key or knob.
* Pressing DETAILS key followed by any panel key presents a screen of settings related to the key pressed.
* 2 pairs of stereo outputs, with phones output fed from either pair.
* Stereo inputs for sampling, audio processing or triggering sounds.
* MIDI in and out.
* 2 inputs for either foot switches or expression pedals, assignable to a wide variety of functions.
* Four complex analog voices based on the same Curtis-chip synth voices used in the highly-aclaimed Prophet '08 and Evolver keyboards.
* Four direct ouputs for the four analog voices.
* 27 dedicated dual-function rotary encoders for voicing the analog and digital voices.

The Fingertip Keyboard Gloves

"These are the children's gloves that play musical notes when the fingertips are tapped against any flat surface. Each glove can play an entire octave in the key of C; pressing on the heel of the hand changes the middle three fingers to the final notes A, B, and C, completing the scale. Both gloves connect with a wire to an integrated speaker unit that provides volume and tempo control for eight different tones, including piano, violin, mandolin, and more (including an additional six different percussion tones); 30 different rhythms are provided. Learning and demonstration functions allow children to tap along with the speaker unit's songs while perfecting their skills. The speaker unit clips to a belt. Made of non-toxic and hypoallergenic polyester. Includes cable for easy recharging using a computer's USB port. Ages 7 and up. Gloves fit children's hands. (1 lb.)" $69.95 via Hammacher Schlemmer

"phil cirocco did a pretty thing, very pretty, very clever thing.

perhaps tangent: it is mine belief that the capitalism of the home electronics revolution virally infected the electronic music instrument space with horrible biases on specification over simian-mindful constructs.

genoqs' success is an example of cultural recovery from this. it could be said that old kit like this odyssey tend towards the simian-mindful.

that said, binding cc#42 to sample start position is hardly simian-mindful."

Tim and Binder

"Secret Swords played in Columbus last night with our great pals Wicked Lung & The Wookalar www.myspace.com/wickedlungwookalar - they played all new songs that had me doing the shoulder dance like a freaking jackass maniac the entire time. Before the show we all hung out at Jason's and Elisa's for a bbq, which was awesome. The Tim and Binder dudes were talking about how they build their synthesizers from scratch, and the terminology they used was like a foreign language and completely over my head. They were a.ma.zing.

Oh yeah and there was free PBR for the bands last night which is always awesome and dangerous at the same time. Afterhour's was at Jason and Elisa's. I passed out on the couch at around 4am, we hit the road around a painful 9:00.

It was another totally amazing Columbus trip.

Cwejman MX-4S, MMF-4, PH-4, PlanB, Doepfer, and Harvestman

YouTube via dkimcg
"I really liked the trapazoid generator in the last video, but it didn't quite fit my current workflow. So I replaced it with the PH-4 and a few other modules. The Cwejman PH-4 is a beautiful 4 phase LFO, it outputs 4 phases of one LFO at 90 degree invervals. It's excellent for panning. Here I'm testing out some stereo panning tricks with the PH-4. It and the Doepfer 143-1 Complex Envelope Generator/LFO are modulating the filters and the 143-1 is controlling one of the gates in the M13 Dual Timbral Gate. The Model 10 Polyphonic Envelope Generator controls the other gate. In addition to the Cwejman MMF-4, the PlanB Model 11 Evil Twin and Harvestman Polivoks filters are used. MFB Seq-01 sequences. and triggers the 143-1, Model 10, and Jomox MBase01 for the kick.

The MMF-4 is one sweet module for panning and VC for filters.

I thought the last video I uploaded was just too dorky sounding. I tried to make this one sound "cool". Put on yer sunglasses kinda cool."

Cwejman MMF-1 Reso Beats

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"This has to be one of the greatest eurorack modular filters available. There is such a beautiful clarity to it, rich and versatile. This is just resonance, it's sort of annoying but you get a since of the massive tone the MMF-1 is capable of. Multimode indeed! Dual bandpass kicks......well you get it. Did you know the Machinedrum can send gate pulses? Yep. That's what's controlling the envelope generator. Cool. Flashing lights courtesy of Dr.Bleep's Thingamagoop."
