, it's not a shocker that their Beat Thang comes loaded with some of the most convenient, cutting edge features you'll see in a beat box. They gained massive street cred working on the sounds on the Zoom SB-246, and they're given even more control with the creation of Beat Thang.

Quad VCF for Casio SK samplers!

via gmeredith on this electro-music.com thread where you will find more info. "Well, I've just completed a huge project, which has been on my mind for a while now, ever since finding this forum - to build a true polyphonic, 4-voice VCF module, with CV input and resonance, running off 9V DC.

It has taken me about 3 months of spare time to get this thing researched, thought out, breadboarded, built and optimised for the Casio SK sampler keyboards (I have an SK8). But it has finally come!!

Below are the results of my efforts.

But I wanted specially to post this message, in order to say a big THANK YOU to everyone in this DIY community; for both directly and indirectly helping me with this project by the way of advice, and links to circuits and information.

I especially want to thank Tim Escobedo, who designed the Q&D VCF, from which this quad VCF is wholly adapted from. Using it as a starting block got me half way there in one hit! Thanks to all the people here who put me on to it!!

I've written up a complete illustrated guide on how to make this quad VCF, which I call the "PHAT PHILTER BANK", and how to set it up for the Casio SK series keyboards. The guide is here, at the bottom of the page here:

http://www.jz-server.de/forum2/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?559
[Update: this original link appears to be dead. This updated link was added to the thread. Be sure to check the electro-music.com thread linked above for updates.]

There is also on that page an mp3 example of one of the SK presets with the filter applied. Makes the humble SK-8 sound like a real analog synth!!

You can also make it as a stand-alone unit, or adapt it to another type of keyboard, although another keyboard may or may not be able to take advantage of the full features that this VCF unit has - such as CV input. The SK samplers have separate internal envelope CV signals for their VCA's, which is particularly useful for driving this VCF. The guide shows you how to set it up in various ways.

Again, thank you all SO MUCH for sharing the knowledge that enabled this to happen!!

Cheers, Graham"

CLASSIC 1970's OBERHEIM OB-1 SYNTHESIZER

via this auction
"My parents bought it for me back in the 1970's. It hasn't been played in over twenty years. I recently discovered it cleaning out the attic. It does have some wear on it as can be expected for it's age. Some of the screws have rusting on them. One of the keys has a slight burn mark on it. I plugged it in and it lights up and makes sounds, the volume knob had a lot of noise in it when turned, so I sprayed some contact cleaner in the pot and quietened it down a bit. All the keys work and are in pretty good condition. The back has some scratching on it. Not sure if everything is working quite like it should as all I could get it to do was make some wierd CP-30 star wars type sounds. This keyboard needs a good tech to bring it back to its former glory. I'm selling this item as is." Inside an Oberheim OB-1.

Mini Moog Model D Synth w/ MIDI & split kybd

via this auction
"This early 1970s, vintage synth is rather unique, in that it has been outfitted w/ a MIDI interface, at the Moog factory and under the direct supervision of Bob Moog only a few years ago. At the same time, the latest, rock-stable oscillator cards were installed and the instrument is in PERFECT working condition. None of the keys stick, and all of the pots and switches work as well as the day I bought it. I am the original and sole owner. The keyboard was split from the body, again at the Moog factory circa 1974 and under the supervision of Bob Moog. Because the instrument was only a year or two off the production line at that point, and the factory was still creating these instruments for market, the wooden framing that the factory carpenters custom made after the split "surgery" was complete match the rest of the body just perfectly. The two halves are connected by a twenty foot, pliable snake, with “Jones Plug” connectors on each end. Unusual, now, but these were relatively common connectors of that period – and they work perfectly. Why the split? In the mid 70s, I heard and saw The Mahavishnu Orchestra perform on many occasions, and the keyboard player, Jan Hammer, wore a split Mini Moog keyboard around his neck and played it in guitar-like fashion. A “first” at the time, and I had to have it done, by the same technicians, at the same factory, and under Bob Moog’s personal supervision. The lugs for a guitar strap remain on the keyboard box to this day.

I had the pleasure of both meeting and performing for Bob on multiple occasions, as I had been asked to join the Moog touring electronic music ensemble in the mid 70s by the then Moog V.P. of Marketing, Herb Deutsch. He is the man who co-invented the instrument in the summer of 1964 with Bob, and who was/is, an excellent snyth player as well. The ensemble performed periodically for the next couple of years, so as a “road instrument,” it sustained multiple “car-door dings” if you will, but all of these were finished-over by a professional paint/stain restoration artist, and are now nearly imperceptible.

For the last twenty-five years or so, the instrument resided in a major Manhattan recording studio. It was used near daily on some of the most major recordings of the last quarter century. The instrument was cleaned before and after every recording session, and was kept in PRISTINE working and cosmetic condition. The small, clear decals with the studio’s logo in black still remain on both sections of the instrument, placed there for security purposes.

This vintage instrument comes with a rather long and glorious history, and sounds - simply sensational! Of course, this totally in-tune instrument can now be controlled by another keyboard or computer, and that MIDI function works perfectly."

Update: it's now listed. You can find it here:
Tapestri
"Tapestri version 1.0 is a sound sample-based synthesizer that uses the iPhone / iPod Touch touch screen interface to crisply control the playback of recorded sample material. With this innovative tool, recorded sounds can be quickly transformed into rap or electronic beats, synthy "clouds" of sound textures, or syncopated, improvised drum beats. Sounds are recorded by pushing the red record button to start and stop the recording process. When a sound is recorded, its waveform displays on the screen, and wherever you touch on the wave, the playback will rapidly jump to that location, allowing you to loop and cut up the sounds instantly!"

4th Brandenburg Concerto on the MoPho analog synthesizer

YouTube via syntesen
"After having realized other Bach pieces on very diverse gear, I decided to try and do a full scale electronic realization of a movement of a Brandenburg concerto on the Dave Smith Instruments MoPho analog synthesizer, in the style of Wendy Carlos.

This is the result - the third movement of the fourth concerto.

The MoPho was controlled by a Novation ReMOTE 61SL, and everything was recorded straight into Ableton Live 7 as audio (24-bit, 48 KHz) - no MIDI sequencing. Effects (mild phasing on some sounds, reverb and delay), equalization and mastering was also applied in Live.

All the patches were programmed by me, and there is a lot more timbral variation to the individual instrument voices than in my earlier realizations."

We're using the Low Pass output to our speaker."

HISTORY OF THE OBX ACCORDING TO VARIOUS INTERNET SITES

The OBX was the first fully programmable polyphonic synth built by Tom Oberheim. This machine was only in production for about 12-months, from 1979 until late 1980. It is estimated that less than 1000 total units were produced in 4, 6, and 8 voice configurations. The 4 voice originally retailed for $4595.

It's the direct successor to the famous SEM based units. The secret of the OBX is that it still has the old discrete 12db SEM-filters (instead of 24db filters). Each voice card in the OBX is in essence an expanded SEM controlled by a common user interface. All later units such as OBXa, OB8 and Matrix as well as many competing products made the use of the more sterile Curtis filter chips. The OBX has a warmer sound than the OBXa and OB8 (which are both CEM based). Tom Oberheim also said that the OB8 is too perfect, lacking the earlier models' grit, and that he prefers the sound of the earlier Oberheims (the SEM and OBX) to the later models. In addition, the Polymod (Xmod, Crossmod) feature never came back on the later machines.

WHAT USERS SAY ABOUT THE SOUND OF THE OBX (WHY YOU WANT IT!)
The OBX blows away every single virtual analog or modern digital synth ever made. It sounds huge, wonderful, and very much alive. It has so much more life, character, and sonic power than any of the modern synths I've owned or heard, I swear it's got a life of its own! I can just mess with it for hours, totally captivated by the sounds it can make. Comparing the X with the Xa in 12db mode the X sounds less transitory and closed in with better bottom end warmth and sweeter resonance. Don’t expect an Xa in 12db mode to give you an OBX. Knocking the Xa into 24db mode gives that famous Xa Punch no doubt helped by its faster EG’s but still gives that "Curtis 3320 VCF " pinched effect despite OB doing an excellent job of making the best use to date of a mediocre chip. OBXa is NOT smooth, it’s agressive and ballsy. The OBX sounds like true Oberheim, not like a "Jump"ed up Prophet 5. For big lush pads and Sweeps IMO the OBX trashes the OB-Xa every time. OBX is one of the smoothest, warmest, biggest sounding synths out there. The sound of the OBX is absolutely superb. It's crystal clear, full and very open. The sound of the filters is second to none - no other programmable polyphonic analog synth will give you such rich sweeps. The fact that every voice board's settings differ a bit from each other makes the sound very lively - a chord never sounds stiff. In short words: the OBX is THE pad-monster."
