Pigtronix EGC Philosopher King

via this auction

" The Pigtronix Philosopher King is a compressor, sustainer, distortion and polyphonic amplitude synthesizer. Combining our award-winning Philosopher’s Tone circuit with a next generation envelope generator, the Philosopher King takes tone several steps further with a full set of ADSR controls including swell, fade, hold level, speed range, one-shot mode, selectable auto reset, CV i/o and expression pedals for swell and fade times.

With the Swell and Fade functions switched off, the Philosopher King provides transparent optical compression with endless sustain on tap. Adjustable compression (ratio), sustain (threshold) and treble (2k cut / boost) controls allow the musician to tailor the nature of the effect to meet the needs of the material at hand. From a subtle dash of added punch to massive, over-the-top howling sustain, the Philosopher King delivers clean, powerful optical compression. The grit control blends in a layer of sweet harmonic distortion that plays nice with other gain pedals as well as amplifier-generated tube distortion.

The Philosopher King’s swell function provides a pick triggered volume swell effect. The volume swell can be reset at any moment by muting or held open by continuous playing. This “slow gear” type effect is smooth and controllable with variable timing from extremely fast to very slow.

The fade function can be used independently of the swell and is also pick triggered. A major new feature of the decay cycle in this pedal is the ability to fade out from peak level only partially, bringing the audio down to a predetermined level, set by the hold control. The hold level is then maintained until the player releases the note to close the cycle. With the auto reset turned on, the cycle will begin again immediately, creating undulating amplitude modulation and even pulsating tremolo stutter effects at faster decay settings. With the auto-reset turned off, the player determines the exact timing for the beginning of the next cycle.

Another new feature is the one shot mode, which causes the Philosopher King to run through the swell / fade / hold / release cycle regardless of what is played after the cycle is triggered. In this mode, the Philosopher King creates complex waves of amplitude modulation on top of the music coming from your instrument. A trigger input jack allows the swell and fade functions to be controlled by an external source such as a band mate or drum track.

Inspired by the EH Attack Decay as well as our own Pigtronix Attack Sustain, the Philosopher King is a state-of-the-art stompbox unmatched in its ability to re-shape the essential nature of any sound source."

ROLAND GAIA LAB AT MUSICIANS INSTITUTE

"Los Angeles, CA, August 11, 2010 — Roland and Musicians Institute are proud to announce the new addition of Roland GAIA SH-01 Synthesizers (www.RolandUS.com/Gaia) to the music lab at MI’s Keyboard Institute of Technology. The Hollywood school is known for offering state-of-the-art instruction on the latest in music technology.

“Most of our students are too young to have experimented with a lot of hardware synths, they typically have more experience with synth plug-ins and soft-synths. But, the user interface on soft synths tend to be clunky and unintuitive, requiring students to use a mouse to turn a knob,” says Kevin Comstock, head of the Keyboard Technology Department at Musicians Institute. “With the Gaia, our students get immediate aural and tactile gratification, which helps to solidify their programming skills, allowing them to quickly create one-of-a-kind, usable sounds much faster than they could otherwise.”

“Roland has long been committed to music education and it continues to be a high priority,” says product manager Vince LaDuca. “The new GAIA SH-01 synthesizer is a perfect fit for students learning synthesis. The front panel display has all the parameters laid out in sequence, so they can understand signal flow.”

Unboxing: RW Minicommand

YouTube via moxlust | August 10, 2010

"Finally it has arrived! The Ruin&Wesen Minicommand unit! This device enables limitless control/configuration via MIDI CC code to Elektron devices Monomachine and Machinedrum.

Concieved, designed, constructed by Manuel "Wesen" Odendahl of techno duo Ruin & Wesen, allows 100% "funtime live control" of virtually any MIDI based music device and beyond. Based on a RW open source firmware, one can actually recalibrate the device to tailor to one's own pleasure. I'd love to do this, but I think I lack the time and brain capacity.

Kudos to the RW team for this, can't wait to ACTUALLY use it now! More video to follow as I figure it out!

:)

ps. sorry for the bad light/camering, I was too excited to open it."

"Realtime effects processor with built-in vintage drumcomputer

Monostudio enriches the sonic palette of the already extremely versatile Korg Monotron analogue ribbon synthesizer.

It allows you to easily record your jamming to wave-files, adds a classic drumcomputer (inspired by the vintage Korg Minipops) and spices up the sound with tempo-synced digital effects.

Monostudio uses ASIO and highly optimized signal processing to give you realtime, ultra low-latency effects processing.

Whether you're sound designing or just noodling around, Monostudio adds to the funfactor of your Korg Monotron."

"these modules are the next in the "dot series." i'm ordering the first rev PCBs this week (one is done, the other just needs its jacks shifted around) and if they check out i'll get the front panels.

this is .MIX. it's a mixer with a transistor makeup gain stage copied from the Moog CP3, including the rail voltages (a regulator is used to provide the -6V rail).

there are no opamps in this thing at all, and it will be driven into distortion easily. alot of the tones on Redshift records are multiple oscillators being distorted by the CP3s.

the output attenuator is bipolar.

the .COM is a comparator/divider optimised for audio and based on the SH-101's suboctave circuit. a fourth output which ANDs the main output and the first suboctave is provided in addition to the original 3. the signal input is at the top and the other input jack is for voltage control of the threshold for PWM.

by "optimised for audio" what i mean is that its output swing isn't 0-5V, but -5V to 5V.

i might change the text from "threshold" to "pulse width". i don't know.

"what would i need this for?" you might ask, i would answer that maybe you want to use a filter as an oscillator, or perhaps you'd like suboctaves on your sawtooth oscillator."

BugBrand Weevil07 Prototype One-off Noise Synth

via this auction

"BugBrand Weevil07 Prototype
This is a one-off prototype for the Weevil07 - you can see a YouTube vid of the actual unit here: [LINK]

Info on the Weevil07 is given here.
..although that doesn't give much detail! But there is a PDF instruction sheet here

Note that I changed the layout of the dials compared with the PDF document! The Low-Power dial is top-left on this proto unit whereas in production versions it was central in the bottom row.

There were a couple of changes between the Weevil06 and the Weevil07:
- I added a pulse-width control to the two oscillators taking the wave from 50/50 squarewave up to a narrow pulse
- and the filter was changed to a much more powerful version with resonance control
At that time I was experimenting with routed PCB front panels so this unit has.
Note that there are no LED indicators on this prototype, nor is there an internal mini-speaker as was found on many other Weevils.
This unit is housed in a compact and strong metal box with mono 1/4" jack output.

This comes with a fresh 9v battery.
Shipping Weight: 1.00kg"

korg prophecy with black keys and white leds

via this auction

"The keys have been painted flat black which is very sexy looking for a synth. White l.e.d.'s are intalled by the mod wheels and ribbon controller/3rd mod wheel and under the keys to give the keys back light and to create a mood in the studio or on stage. It's really incredible for performance b/c of all the 3 assignable mod wheels and the assignable ribbon controller and the programmable arpeggiator and the knobs on top."

moog taurus II synth

via this auction

"It's basically the same thing as a moog rogue, but without the keyboard.

This synth has a great moog sound and a beautiful filter, with the relatively rare (for a vintage moog) ability to sync the VCOs. It's very easy to use, and very hard to make sound bad. I've made up two special cables for the gate(positive) and CV(linear) ins, and these will be supplied with the synth. Then you can plug in any CV/gate source you have to drive it."

black korg poly 800 II synthesizer keytar blue l.e.d.s

via this auction

"All buttons and the pitch bender/joystick work perfect. The synthesizer has guitar pegs and guitar strap and can be run off C batteries and used as a keytar. Keys have been modified and painted black with blue l.e.d.'s under the keys to give it a really cool polished look. The l.e.d.'s kinda give the keys a blue backlit look. You will look awesome with this on stage or it would look great in a studio."

Null Object - Fast Eddie - Casio CTK-601 and TB-303

Null Object - Fast Eddie by Null Object

via Null Object:
"I tried to create something unique using the presets in the Casio CTK-601. This is basically a modern home keyboard but has midi and some fun controls. It cost me about $20 bucks in an op shop. I'm getting right into these little beastie synths at the moment. They are quite nasty and have terrible line levels out and are noisy but they are fun!

Synths
Casio CTK-601 (Drums + Sync)
Roland TB-303 (Midibass mod + circuit bending by Null Object)
Ableton Live (VST prossessing + recording)

The Casio's drum machine supplied the beats as a mono out with a stupidly low level out. I mashed up the sound a bit using GGain Dipped the EQ @ around 100hz and rolled down a little from 1k to around 10K. (Live's EQ) Then into the Stardust compressor

The TB303 played three different sequences as well as a blank sequence when it wasn't needed. It was hit with the Stardust compressor. The MDA Stereo. Then into the 4ormulator vocoder.

The Whole thing was rendered at 192k 32bit then loaded into Reaper where it was hit with the inbuilt Mastering Limiter.

Granted the song is not at all complex, I think it has a really interesting sound and one that would trick a lot of folk.

Thanks For listening."

"Here is a look at the speak and spell that I recently bent. There is a tutorial here....

It is also for sale on ebay at this address....

The tutorial will show you how to bend one of these wonderful machines."

via this auction

"This is a brilliantly modified Texas Instruments Speak and Spell. It has 5 main bends or modifications. Of course you have a pitch adjustment knob. That can also be toggled on and off with the switch right to the left of it.

You also have a loop or repeat feature that is really creative and fun. You can activate this mod by the switch in the far left of the row of 4. Also it can be activated momentarily by the black pushbutton at the top left. The next three switches are crazy cool bends. They throw this into a frenzy of insaine sounds. The great part about this bend is that it doesn't crash. One minute you are making crazy out of this world sounds, turn off all the mods and the next minute it acts as if it was never bent.

The front panel has been replaced to allow for more room. I love the look of this and have yet to see it anywhere else. Behind the new panel are 3 blue LED's that I included to make this look just amazing."
