Folktek Collection Vol. 1 Sample Set

via Folktek Arts

"After a year of work "the Folktek Collection Volume 1" has finally been realized. A massive selection of virtual instruments designed and recorded by Arius Blaze and Big Pauper - to be played using Kontakt. We took over $30,000 worth of our favorite Folktek works and meticulously multi-sampled the sounds we love, then designed the interfaces within Kontakt to have the controls we liked and what's resulted is a massive 1.74gb of data and 64 virtual instruments of the highest quality."

Seline HD - Quick Tutorial

YouTube via AmidioInc | August 25, 2010

"Symbiosis of research, technology, and passion... Seline is the latest, most innovative and best-sounding music instrument for the iPad, aimed at easy creation of complicated, soulful, intricate melodies, backed with lush soundscapes.

Position iPad firmly on your knees or table and put your both hands on the surface in the way that is shown on the picture.

Index, middle and ring fingers are generally responsible for their respectable column, but baby finger can also be used in many cases.

Aim for the center of the key for more volume, slide to the outer region of the key to lower the volume of the sustained sound.

Arrows indicate that for every grid, higher notes are achieved by moving upper and closer to the center. The scale is divided into the odd (pink) and even (blue) part. They are represented on the upper keyboard so you can always see what you're actually playing. Combine playing notes from different hands to achieve great results.

Use thumbs to tap the "tone-down" zone at the bottom of the screen, while holding any note, to go down 1 position in the scale. Use index/middle fingers to tap any of the "tone-up" buttons, to go up 1 position in the scale. These methods can also be used to create easy trills.

Use index fingers to move the combined pitchbend/vibrato joystick. Up/down is the pitchbend (+/- 2 semitones) and left/right is vibrato (center is no vibrato, sides are 100% vibrato). You can also tap anywhere in the zone of the modifier and the joystick will move to that position.

Tap and drag the attack joystick to modify the attack of the sound on the fly. Center is the quickest attack, sides are the longest.

Tap the drone indicator to start/stop drone. Drones are 100% automatic and can be only turned on and off. Tap only once and wait, since drones can have slow attack/release. While transposing, the first drone can be a bit off due to the rebuilding of the generation algorhythms."

RIP Keith Barr - Founder of Alesis and MXR

Sad news sent my way via Michelle Moog-Koussa of The Bob Moog Foundation.

via wikipedia on Alesis:

"Alesis Studio Electronics was founded in 1980 by Keith Barr (who co-founded MXR) in Hollywood, California. Sadly, Mr. Barr is reported to have passed away of natural causes on August 24, 2010 at age 61."

Condolences to his friends and family. 61 is too young.

image and the following via Spin Semiconductor
"Keith Barr is the president of Spin Semiconductor, and an avid electronics engineer. Keith has been designing products, primarily for the audio industry. He founded MXR Innovations in 1973, and later, Alesis Corp in 1984. His experience began with tube circuits (when transistors were not available), building amplifiers and radios.

Although an analog engineer at heart, he designs computer architectures, the most recent of which is the FV-1 processor (Spin's first product). Keith sees ASIC design as the next step in electronics engineering, and designs all of his circuits from the bottom up, from the transistor level."

He authored ASIC Design in the Silicon Sandbox: A Complete Guide to Building Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuits.

Update: Keith Barr was the man that made the Andromeda A6 possible. See this post for some history.

Note: I decided to leave this post on top for the remainder of the day. New posts are scheduled to start going up after 2AM PST to make sure folks in the UK/Europe have a chance to see it. You can quickly get back to this post via the Exclusive label above, or of course you can bookmark it.

DJTT Midifighter Contest May 2010 (Winning Entry)

YouTube via distracteddispatches | May 12, 2010

"UPDATE: This Launchpad mapping for Traktor (TSI) and a PDF explaining it can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/?jyymxbmdt2j

This is the winning entry for DJ Tech Tools Midifighter contest. Thanks DJ Tech Tools and Ean Golden for the free Midifighter!!!! Other winning videos can be viewed here: http://www.djtechtools.com/2010/05/20...

I'm using a Novation Launchpad with Traktor Pro 1.2.4. and juggling the cue points freestyle w/ quantization off and play off. For music, I'm using the tracks specified in these contest rules: http://www.djtechtools.com/2010/04/18...

Just to explain the Launchpad mapping, it's divided into four decks. Each deck takes up a quarter of the Launchpad (4 buttons by 4 buttons). Each deck also has 8 illuminated cue points. It's not the best set up for cue point juggling but it works for other stuff. You can download the mapping and a PDF explaining it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?jyymxbmdt2j

I want to win a Midifighter because I love this concept of cue point juggling but the Launchpad keys are sticky and not really suited for the kind of crazy routines I imagine you could do with real arcade buttons. Thanks for the motivation to make a video and a chance to participate in this contest, DJ Tech Tools!"

I used the Yamaha HE-8 organ for the melody and the Elka EP-8 for the characteristic organ riff. The Kawai keyboard also played a small part in the arrangement."

Korg MS20 Including Schematics, Manuals and Setting Examples

via this auction

Note the following documents are from the seller. You can check the seller's listings here or contact the seller on Ebay. Do not contact me.

"includes Schematics, Manuals and Setting Examples... My 75-page Information Packet is the definitive collection of MS-20 documentation. It includes a photocopy of the hard to find Service Manual that tells you exactly how to align keyboard intonation. It contains physical and schematic drawings of the entire instrument, a complete parts list, and circuit board layouts in case you have to repair something. As a musician/engineer, I wanted ALL the paperwork, so I schmoozed copies out of the factory guys. The Owner's Manuals are first generation copies and include many notes and hand-written custom voicings I developed. The Service Manual was already a copy when I got it from the Korg repair shop. Since 1999, I have sold over 300 sets of these documents to buyers around the world... Im including a copy of the original Owner's Manual which has all the basics, like a block diagram and signal flow chart, patching tricks, and many basic sound patches. It also has a scary looking "CAUTION" warning you to never, EVER open those secret rubber plugs!

There's a 30-page Setting Examples manual, with lots of instrumental and effects patches ... many of my own design, including SFX like endless wind, surf, distant trains, dive bombers, earthquakes, explosions, helicopters, lazers, and UFO's.

There are tricks for using the External Signal Processor, so you can plug in your guitar or microphone and create control voltages which in turn control the synth. Remember: the MS-20 was designed by Yasuhiko Mori, who also created the famed Vocoder! Very cool effects!

A Supplemental ESP Manual elaborates on pitch to voltage and expression pedal control. As an engineer, I often used my Korg like a broad-band signal generator for machine setup, creating tones from 20 to 12 kHz ... so there are patches for that too.

And there's that hard to find Service Manual with the crucial VCO Alignment Procedure ... the "secret" process that lets you pop open those rubber plugs without fear. You'll never get caught "playing in the cracks" again ... unless you really want to!"

ARP Explorer 1

via this auction

"This was made somewhere between 1974-78 so it's at least 32 years old and for it's age it is in remarkable condition really! There is one small chip on the wood of the left-hand side end cheek as you can see from the pictures. Other than that all knobs and sliders function with a small bit of crackle on the frequency. I think a bit of a clean with some switch cleaner should sort it out but I thought I'd better mention.

It sounds great, very organic and 'real' like analogue synths of this era do. It comes with all the music stand, original sound cards, also in great condition, the manual and service manual. This synth is perfect for a collector really.

Check out http://www.arpexplorer.com where you will find a resource page."

Future Retro Revolution

via this auction

"The Revolution is true analogue and all its sound is analogue generated except obviously the effects processor which is DSP based. The sequencer is just brilliant and once mastered you'll wonder how you ever did without it. (It really is that good). The CV and Gates allow me to control my Moog Rogue (also for sale) to get all the beeps and blips I ever needed. Imagine a 303 sequence but with a powerful Moog bass sound and you'll get the idea! … Now add some distortion! You can also route the signal from the headphone output back to modulate the filter's cutoff for some unusual self modulation effects. Experimenting with the ports at the back can lead to some crazy sounds indeed."
