Matlab Synthesizer - Beethoven: "Waldstein" Sonata

YouTube Uploaded by ScrollingMusic on Mar 3, 2011

"Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827): Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53. I. Allegro con brio

This sonata is considered to be one of Beethoven's greatest and most recognized, and one of the three particularly notable ones of his middle period. Beethoven completed this sonata, one of his most technically challenging works, in the summer of 1804. During this time, Beethoven had begun to develop hearing problems that would lead to his deafness in later life. The "Waldstein" name comes from the sonata's dedication, to Count Ferdinand Ernst Gabriel von Waldstein of Vienna, a close personal friend of Beethoven's.

This synthesized rendition was generated by our Matlab synthesizer. For this piece, we programmed a very velocity-sensitive sound whose harmonics change with changing dynamic levels. Volume levels alone are not enough to convey the vast scope and grandiosity of this work. The colors in the scrolling visualization correspond to dynamic levels as well, with red being the loudest notes in the piece."

The audio knob has a smooth volume curve for swells and changes the timbre as you dial up. The push button can be played as a momentary switch for short bleeping sounds and then latched in for continuous play.

Multi LED flashes brilliant rainbow colors in a hypnotic pattern from inside a clear triangle prizm that's removable - just slide in place. Light and sound can influence each other in several ways. They can be switched on independantly and when used together an eerie ringmod- like coloration is heard. Projects on walls and ceilings in low light adding room ambience."

XILS-lab PolyKB II Player

"The PolyKB II Player is much more than a simple player. It's also a fully featured real synth.

It gives you the liberty to fully customize 8 parameters you can select in a big list: Adsr values, Filter Cut Off and resonance, etc -See the complete list of parameters below -

But there's more : These parameters can also receive full automation via midi Cc. Its rather rare to have to automate more than 8 controls in real time for a preset, in addition of all the real times controls already contained in the preset and made available by our Sound Designers ( Ie the original Mod Wheel, After Touch, Velocity, LFO and envelope modulation assignations )

The PolyKB II PLayer also comes with the same acclaimed 250 hi quality preset library than its big brother.

Its also fully compatible with our Analog Bags 1 & 2 Add On soundbanks, as well as with some 3rd party soundsets, so you can extend the original library at a very affordable price. All your custom patches are also saved via your host, and projects using custom patches are saved with all your edits.

The PolyKB II Player is protected with a serial number, no USB dongle required !"

Vox Jennings Univox and Hammond Solovox tech and sound check!

YouTube Uploaded by sounddoctorin on Mar 4, 2011

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com leads us on tour inside and out of the original monophonic organ/synths. (With very simple synth features like footage selections and slow attack envelope on the Hammond) Actually the Hammond Solovox (produced from 1940 to 1950 nearly I hear) is a scaled down mono version of the 170 tube 500 some pound Hammond Novacord (Made in 1938!) Novacord was a full polyphonic divide down synthesizer like many transistor ones create in the 70's (Arp Omni etc.) Probably the most ahead of it's time musical instrument ever created.

The Solovox's tone cabinet contains the divider tubes and mixer tubes as well as a huge relay can that operates each time a key is hit. There are three relays that route signals for each of the three 'buss segments'. I said 'three buss' keyboard in the video but it's not three parallel buses but rather three single buss segments. 1 per octave. The footages are prearranged by those switches to be apportioned appropriately to the three buses.

THen after the relays properly route things from the high low and mid mixes, we go to the filters that are selected by the buttons beneath the keys. The capacitor ladder and mechanical vibrato are also housed therein with the knee volume lever that uses a set of resistances to gradually increment the volume.

We'd love to find more information on the Jennings unit if anyone has it! A schematic would be awesome!

The Univox has simplified things to get a great tube sound into a much smaller box by 1954. The keys are also much more playable! The short keys on the Solovox take some getting used to. Definitely some useful sounds!"

MATRIXSYNTH Card in the Wild

Pic in via 7thDanSound whose videos are frequently featured here.

New cards and magnets are in. These are somewhat of a limited run. Out of 3000 cards printed only 1000 or so met the bar and I had to go through three printers to finally get them. The green fluorescent ink and extra gloss coating required a special printing process. They were pricey and difficult to make due to the black being less forgiving. Because of this future batches will probably not have the extra coating.

"The very definition of getting carried away. I bought a Boss RRV-10 reverb last night, and just wanted to test it out to make sure it was all working, and 5 hours later, here we are.

This piece is done with no sequencing at all. A Max patch does the dirty work, and everything you hear except the snare drum is coming from the hardware synths, six of 'em. I'm arranging things by turning specific metro objects on and off in Max via the Korg nanoControl; they're all quantized to the Global Clock."

"I was just going to try some more modulations before taking down the patch and get going with the video I had planned for tonight but I found the sound to be so pleasing and interesting I just had to record it.

It's the FM patch from Episode 50 only this time there is just one modulator. I use two outputs of the modulator however, the regular sine and a sawtooth run through a fixed filterbank. This gives some extra interesting control over sound. But what came by accident and feels even more interesting is the variation of notes and the higher modulation index that yields a more screaming sound at times. This is what I love with this patch."

YAMAHA CS-15 with Mod Switches on Back

via this auction
"First of all, I have modified it's LFO (originally 80% of rotational distance takes frequency from 1 to 10 Hz, the rest 20% is from 10 to 100 Hz (by the way, this is enormous for this kind of synths as all of them are usually have LFO which works from 1 to 10 hz) after the mod is activated - you can use all 100% of rotational distance 1 to 100, equally divided.

Second mod connects two VCF into series and creates 24dB filter (originally you can use them only in parallel) - I suppose you can imagine how much this increases it's sonical power! Basically, you got 2 x Yamaha cs10 in one case now.

The third mod helps you to route noise into serial filter mod."

This 2-oscillator machine is capable of producing a wide array of sounds. From a very powerful low end to ear splitting low pass filter resonance, to total electronic insanity (it’s specialty). It is capable of producing nasty lead sounds (especially with use of it’s ring modulator). The pitch bend pressure pad function on this one has been modified in order to enable it to do multiple octave pitch shifting (or smaller amounts all the way down to zero, depending on the pitch bend ‘sensitivity’ setting)"
