High Times / Playing with TenoriOn

Published on Feb 12, 2013

"For those of you who don't really understand what happens here and where which sound comes from:
The music is made with 2 instruments, the sequencer TenoriOn and the synthesizer workstation Korg M50.

TenoriOn is the instrument which i handle in the video. The clip shows the whole session, but you hear the sequenced sound first at around minute 1 when it's slowly

fading in.
The other sounds which you hear from the beginning are additional tracks which i've played with the Korg M50 synthesizer workstation. Also the TenoriOn was routet

before to the Korg M50 and is only the first track of this song.
Btw, the holiday video which appears in the small window is a flight from Denpasar (Bali) to Labuan Bajo (Flores).

A shorter song (main theme) is available at: http://beyondthelines.bandcamp.com/tr..."

Stone Mountain Park Carillon-Mabel Sansing Sharp Carillonneur

Uploaded on Apr 4, 2010 stevethrasher·156 videos

"For over three decades carillonneur, Mabel Sansing Sharp has treated audiences to spectacular performances of the songs "Clare Delune", "Chattanooga Choo Choo", "Amazing Grace" and "Georgia" along with many other songs and hymns. A very special thank you to Ms. Mabel for all of the wonderful memories!

For those of you not familiar with the Stone Mountain Carillon, the instrument was built by Schulmerich Carillons in Sellersville, PA for the Coco-Cola Pavilion 1964 World's Fair in New York.
The 732-bell carillon is located lakeside in the heart of beautiful Stone Mountain Park, Georgia. This amazing bell tower structure provides daily concerts to those young and old for reflection and inspiration. The carillon is the heaviest of all musical instruments and probably one of the most interesting by design."

This one spotted by Evan of Antiquity Music, makers of The Wheel Harp. It appears to be electronic based as you can see from the pics.

"For your consideration is an extremely rare Schumerich Americana carillon, one of Schulmerich's flagship carillons from the 1960s. Most of these carillons have been destroyed or salvaged for their amplifier parts, and finding one of these very nice models is extremely unusual. Buying a new digital Schulmerich carillon costs over $35,000 today, but these analog carillons have an even more beautiful, breathtaking sound. This particular carillon came from Weber State University in Utah, and cost over $25,000 in the early 1960s, which equates to over $180,000 in today's dollars.

We have fully restored this carillon's wiring, adding connectors (DB25, XLR, RCA etc.), so that the carillon can easily be moved around (all Schulmerich Americana carillons were originally hard-wired on-site when installed, so when removed, over 400 individual cables had to be cut, making restoration extremely costly and time-consuming). This required soldering over 800 individual cables!!!!! The restoration work on this carillon has cost us over $4000 in technicians' time.

"Fancy handmade in the US midi controller. The Manta is similar to a Buchla/Serge touchplate but with USB! Beautiful wood panels and backing with a metal touchplate makes for a very expressive instrument/controller with a very quality feel. Mine is version 2 with bi-colour leds.

The Manta is designed to be incredibly flexible depending on how you wish to use it. It makes a fantastic complement to a MAX/MSP, PureData or modular setup but can be used with any DAW such as Live or Logic. I've used it as velocity-sensitive 48 note keyboard, which I found useful for breaking old keyboard habits. You can assign the little hexagons to pretty much any midi parameter though. It can be a sequencer, X/Y pad, keyboard, fader. A lot of potential in a small package.
It has a USB connection so you have to interface with the computer for now, though Snyderphonics are apparently developing a little breakout box with midi and CV for analogue and other external gear."

"Dual Multimode Filter and Crossfader in 16HP

The original circuit was designed by analog guru David G. Dixon after carefully studying and analyzing the classic Korg ms-20 filter. His work resulted in a completely original circuit based around ssm2164 VCA chips. This design is capable of almost identical results but is far more versatile. This is not a clone, it is an entirely new and modern circuit with many enhancements.

Features:

Two independent filters, each with lp, hp and notch modes.

Unique resonant (q) drive control

Switch links the two filters allowing both parallel and serial routing via normals to input b (which can be broken by inserting a cable at input b).

Oscillates very easily and can be used as a dual sine vco. using the resonant controls this sine shape can be colored.

Dual 1v/oct inputs

Built in full featured cross fader allows voltage controlled crossfading between the two filters. The xfade has a switch to select either unipolar (e.g. envelopes) or bipolar (e.g. lfo) control of the xfade position. There is also a switch to select direction. With nothing plugged into the xfade jack the xfade knob controls the fade position. When an external CV is patched in the same knob acts as an attenuator for the control signal.

Jumpers on the back to select “modern” or “vintage” resonant modes (two different feedback paths for the resonance that use different diodes)

Expansion jacks for adding additional filter inputs and VC control of resonance

The Corgasmatron’s sound can range from ultra clean and precise, to extremely ballsy and dirty. The resonance is incredibly musical and is prime for all sorts of experimenting and sound design. The normalling, routing and cv options have been carefully selected to allow for a lot of control over the modules functionality and capabilities.

In addition to traditional filter and vco applications, the Corgasmatron can also be used to create formant sounds, work in stereo (use the linked fm2 pots and switch the routing to parallel), fm percussion and so much more."

"I've been messing about with a new design of noise maker i call the Step Sister.

It is a step sequencer with a built in analog saw wave VCO, a square wave LFO which is synced to the sequencer speed, linked through a basic envelope to a resonant lowpass filter. This is just a test version and is yet unfinished. The finished version will (hopefully) have attack and decay controls for the filter envelope (this version just has 1), a selectable number of steps in the sequence from 1 to 10 and wave shaping to turn the saw wave into a pulse wave of some description. It also won't need 2 batteries as shown here. There are also a few knobs on the board that aren't connected so it a bit simpler than it looks. Honest.

It should eventually be available to buy from my Etsy and Folksy shop and if its not nightmarishly complicated to build, a kit version too.

Dave Smith Awarded Grammy for Technical Achievement Press Release

And the official press release (video link below):

"Dave Smith Awarded Grammy for Technical Achievement

Instrument Designer Recognized for Role in Creation of MIDI

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—February 11, 2013—Musical instrument designer Dave Smith was honored with a Grammy® award this past Saturday for his work developing the Musical Instrument Digital Interface or MIDI, as it is more commonly known. The ceremony, held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, also celebrated the work of Glenn Gould, Carole King, and the Temptations, among others. Smith shares the award with Ikutaro Kakehashi, founder of Roland Corporation, the Japanese musical instrument manufacturer.

In 1982, Smith and Kakehashi formed a technical alliance to develop a means by which musical instruments and then-new personal computers could communicate with each other. They developed an inexpensive hardware interface and a simple protocol so that the technology could easily be integrated into new products. MIDI made its public debut at a trade show in January 1983 when instruments from Sequential Circuits--Smith’s company at the time--and Roland were connected for the first time and used to control each other.

MIDI was adopted by all major manufacturers of electronic instruments and proved especially valuable to performing musicians. It also kickstarted the home studio revolution by enabling musicians and composers to make multitrack recordings at home at a time when multitrack audio recorders were too costly for most artists.

One of the more remarkable things about MIDI is that the interface and protocol are virtually unchanged thirty years later and that--with its widespread inclusion in musical instruments, computers, and cell phones--it is more commonly used today than ever before. 'I can connect one of my latest instruments with a Commodore 64 or one of the instruments from the ‘80s with an iPad and it just works,' said Smith. 'How many other computer protocols can you say that about?'

Smith has been designing instruments for thirty-five years and they have been played by a diverse range of musicians, from Pink Floyd to Herbie Hancock, from Alicia Keys to Philip Glass, and from Oscar Peterson to Trent Reznor. Smith continues to design synthesizers and drum machines for his current company, Dave Smith Instruments. Founded in 2002, the company is headquartered in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. The instruments are also manufactured in San Francisco and sold worldwide.

Video of the award presentation is available at tinyurl.com/aqfcwfd.

About Dave Smith InstrumentsLaunched in 2002, Dave Smith Instruments is helmed by legendary musical instrument designer and Grammy® award winner Dave Smith. Dave’s many accomplishments include the creation of the Prophet-5—the world’s first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer—and his legacy as the primary driving force behind MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface).

Dave Smith Instruments’ products are used by an ever-increasing roster of well-known musicians and are available from music retailers worldwide. Instruments include the versatile analog/digital hybrid Evolver synthesizers, the Prophet ‘08 and Prophet 12, and the Tempest analog drum machine. Dave Smith Instruments is based in San Francisco, where the instruments are also manufactured. For more information, visit www.davesmithinstruments.com."

"Best heard on good speakers or headphones!

In this video I'm digging deep with the sequencer. Most of the work is being done by two of the voices. Once synth is the kick drum. One other is the bassline. The rest of everything going on is the two remaining voices. The Analog 4 is capable of inserting different patches into single triggers on the sequencer but that is not what I'm doing here. The whole intro section is just modulation and sequencing of the synth parameters.

This machine is deep and is sounds stunning."

Sunsine Audio SoundMaster Stix305 Nanostudio & Beatmaker 2 Sample Pack

"Simple acid demo of the Soundmaster Stix305 drumsample kit by WaveShaper."

"Sunsine Audio is proud to announce we will begin releasing Beatmaker 2 and Nanostudio versions of Waveshaper drum kits and samples.

The iOS versions will be available exclusively through Sunsine Audio, while the original Wav versions will remain available from Waveshaper. Both versions are priced exactly the same.

The first "converted" release is - STIX 305

The SoundMaster Stix 305 is a very rare analogue drum machine from the early eighties. You get both the cheesy, mellow sound of the psychedelic 70s, plus the acid hats of the 80s !

This WaveShaper sample pack is a quite unique occasion to meet this very little known and lovely beat box. Your tracks will get a great retro sound, whether you are an electronic funk producer, and acid freak or a true analogue sound lover.

The Stix305 was recorded using some tube preamp and compressor and a vintage eq on top of it to keep the analogue vibe on the full recording chain.

As the Stix305 features few sounds, I recorded them at various compression, gain and eq settings and made several takes of each sound in order to get some subtle variations that your round-robin soft sampler will love for sure !

There are also a dozen of loops plus a more punchy kit, processed using some strong tube distortion.

Converted and exclusively available for iOS use (Nanostudio and Beatmaker 2) from Sunsine Audio. Please visit http://waveshaper.12r.org/ for original Wav file versions. This product is not included in the Sunsine subscription deal.

"Geometrical arrangement of 20 triangle akasha modules that form an ikosaedron"

Akasha Synth Sound Art (at NAMM 2013)

"A short demo at NAMM of the first Akasha Synth object. It's a modular system with geometric shapes in order to build sounding 3D art objects. The modules or nodes provide analog sound circuits and a digital interconnection that can be controlled by Midi. Touch sensitive pads and bright LEDs show the interconnection VCAs and their modulations. There are triangles, squares and pentagons to obtain any platonic or irregular body or planes.
The synth line comes from the Akasha Modules, it's synced to an XBASE 999 and controlled by Midi CCs or the internal touch sensitive pads.
Sorry for the noisy environment;)"
