Wave Junction Filter Routing

Published on May 22, 2017 Meta Function

"In this video, Meta Function demonstrate filter routing on the Wave Junction, a Max For Live synthesizer developed in partnership with Sonicstate.com.

The Wave Junction features three independent state variable filters, each with independent controls. Using filtering, you can remove frequencies fed from the raw harmonics of the oscillators and the noise sources in a technique akin to sculpture. Each filter shares similar controls that allow a myriad of features allowing for complex timbre shaping. Two of the filters allow complex routing of both oscillators and both noise sources. A third master filter allows adaptation of the overall timbre produced by the Wave Junction.

In this video oscillator one is routed to state variable filter one, configure as a 24dB 4 pole lowpass resonant filter. Oscilaltor two is routed to state varaiable filter two operating with a 24db 4 pole high pass resonant response. This creates an interesting bandpass mix of both oscillators. The balance of each filter is tweaked before state variable filter three is engaged that uses a resonant 24dB 4 pole transistor ladder response. Finally the modualtion matrix is used to route LFO 1 to the cutoff frequency of state variable filter 1, LFO 2 to the cutoff frequency of state variable filter 2 and LFO 3 to the cutoff frequency of state variable filter 3.

Watch at 720p with good quality audio monitoring for the best experience.

Meta Function developed the Max For Live synthesizer, the Wave Junction in partnership with Sonicstate.com. A four voice paraphonic synth with 2 multi-mode osc, three multi-mode filters, 5 LFOs, 5 Envs and a 12 slot modulation matrix.

You can buy it from Sonicstate right here for £19.95:

"My latest WASP after a complete service being controlled via midi from the Arturia BSP sequencer going thru Kenton Pro Kadi connected to the 7 pin din link socket. As an experiment, I thought I'd see if they would translate from the OB6 to the Prophet 6...Some did, some didn't, some sound better of the Prophet and others not. Published on May 21, 2017 Tom Loncaric

"...more experimentation with my new Sequential Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 6 synthesizer. This time, using MIDI I connected it to a Yamaha MX49, the baby Motif. The Yamaha is providing the perfect DX7 'FullTines' sound, and the secret technique here is that it's combined with a fat analog brass patch on the Prophet. It's a marriage of digital and analog synth sounds, which really captures that 1980s feel, when digital and analog equipment were coexisting in the studios for a while. A bit of 1980s nostalgia..."

3 Modules #8: Maths, Peaks, Clouds

Published on May 21, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"I call this one 'demented drummer'. Clouds and Maths means you know this is going to be intricate and unpredictable. I love how the results can shift wildly by the slightest adjustment of the controls here, and how tweaking one knob on Maths can affect multiple parts of the patch in different ways.

Patch notes:
The sound source is Peaks’ secondary drum mode, the digital drum synth, which has four controls (from top to bottom): pitch, FM/pitch sweep, decay time and tone color (from tonal to noise). I’m manually changing these parameters to tweak the sound. Peaks’ channels are triggered by Maths’ EOR and EOC gate outputs respectively.

Maths is also modulating itself, to create some interesting "drum patterns". The EOR/EOC gates each trigger cycle mode for the opposite channel, and the sum and inverted sum outputs modulate the cycle rate for channel 1 and 4 respectively. This means that as the rate of one increases, the other decreases.

Peaks’ outputs are mixed together in the Quadratt, and the mix is sent to Clouds, which is in "looping delay" mode. Delay time (position) and loop size (size) are modulated by Maths’ unity function outputs from ch. 1 and 4 respectively. Freeze, which loops the delay buffer, is engaged by the OR output from Maths. I’m manually tweaking Clouds’ dry/wet mix, feedback and reverb amounts, as well as the input filter (texture) and pitch shift to create changes in the patch.

No external effects are used this time. :)

Thanks for watching!"

Two New Synths Coming From Roland on June 20th

It looks like Roland will be announcing two new synths on June 20th. On their Future Redefined website you will see a numbered list of squares with categories like Drums / Percussion, Guitar Products, Pro Video, and Synthesizer. At first I thought each square was for a different date, but I realized many had the same date. That implies each square represents a different product. There are two squares for synths dated June 20, so that tells us two synths will be announce on June 20th. Note there are four squares for Drums / Percussion. I'm guessing any drum synths or drum machines would fall under that category vs. synths, but who knows. We'll find out on May 26th for them.
