Erica Synths PICO DRUM2 // Tiny Eurorack drum synthesiser a BIG sound

Published on May 4, 2020 DivKidVideo

"**TIMING INDEX BELOW**

Here we have the new PICO DRUM2 module from Erica Synths. Unlike the PICO DRUMS (which is sample based) the DRUM2 is a full on drum synthesiser. It has 8 algorithms that cross traditional drum & percussion sounds, melodic basslines and some really filfthy hits for drum sounds or riffs. It tracks 1v/oct, has assignable CV to algorithm parameters, decay or algorithm select meaning it’s easy with some careful sequencing to turn a single module into a whole beat and drum kit. With such a wide range to the module there’s lots of patches so feel free of course to skip around with the timing index and sections below. I’ve added lots of beats with no talking, each algorithm is explored, CV configuration is demonstrated and there’s also tuning the DRUM2 into a full drum kit vibe with some careful sequencing.

NOTE - “beat break” patches are no talking patches with the intention of showing the wide range of sounds these can produce across a range of different styles. There’s additional sounds and processing on some of them but they all label what the two DRUM2 modules are doing on screen.

Future Sound Systems interview // NEW Recombination Engine & Desktop Pin Matrix

Scheduled for Apr 10, 2020 DivKidVideo

"Here I'm joined by Finlay Shakespeare of Future Sound Systems to discuss his new (and very unique!) RECOMBINATION ENGINE triple analogue oscillator Eurorack module.

The video demo for the module is here - [posted here]

Module is with Signal Sounds available now here"

Future Sound Systems OSC2 Recombination Engine // a UNIQUE triple analogue Eurorack oscillator

Published on Apr 10, 2020 DivKidVideo

"Here we have a total unique triple analogue (or analog for our stateside friends) oscillator for the Eurorack format from Future Sound Systems. The OSC2 Recombination Engine has a master ‘Scissor’ oscillator that can audio rate switch, sync and glue waveforms together from separate positive and negative DNA oscillators. The Glue section is a VCA that merges the positive and negative waves at the rate of the Scissor with options for additional level modulation and mixing internal or external sounds with an added input.

It’s a massively varied unit with everything from soft and sweet sines and triangles working independently to a totally mad as a box of frogs noise oscillator and everything in between. Coaxing out digital DX style musical FM has been easy, it’s a total wizard with AM synthesis and the unique wave the waveform level VCAs work. So I look forward to further exploration.

LA67 WFM Oscillator // Analogue 'Kobol' style waveshaping VCO in Eurorack with FM, AM & more

Published on Apr 8, 2020 DivKidVideo

*Here's the new WFM Oscillator from LA67. It's a 8HP Eurorack oscillator that offers multiple dimensions of sound shaping and control. There's the standard triangle and square outs and then a unique 'WFM' section. That offers level control (CV modulation or audio rate for AM synthesis) as well as RSF Kobol style wave shaping and also pulse width modulation. There's the standard FM (exp/lin), sync and 1v/oct controls too. As always this video is about demonstrating the raw sounds and features with musical example and patch tips that can help us all push our synthesis and sound design further.

SoundForce Dual ADSR // Heavily expanded JUNO 106 style envelopes with LFOs & CV over everything!

Published on Apr 7, 2020 DivKidVideo

"Here's the new Dual ADSR Eurorack module from SoundForce which at it's base state recreates the response, curves and feel of the classic Roland JUNO 106 envelopes but expands way beyond that. The envelopes can be re-triggered, they cycle with constant or gate cycling behaviour, CV over all stages of the envelopes, inverted out, end of outputs and multiple time/response switches.

"The SoundForce Dual ADSR is a feature-rich envelope generator with full CV control of each stage.
High performance digital module:

The Dual ADSR is powered by a 120Mhz ARM Cortex-M micro-controller with a built-in DAC. This modern chip allows for extremely smooth envelopes curves even at high frequencies. Thanks to digital technology, the implementation of CV control in software makes the hardware more simple thus economical, and allows for different time ranges and 2 curve responses (LIN/EXP).

Scanner Flaneur // possiblity of a new synthesis *NEW EURORACK MODULE*

Published on Apr 1, 2020 DivKidVideo

"The flaneur explores the relationship between the wandering wave form and the theoretical limits of the moment. With influences as diverse as Camus and Miles Davis, new combinations are generated from both mundane and transcendant textures.

the universality of myth and emotional memories ● possibility of a new synthesis ● a sense of chaos ● refreshing understanding of the moment ● a hegemony of distress ● synergies are generated ● opaque and transparent textures

Sound that begins as a yearning soon corrodes into a cacophony of sonic lust, leaving only a sense of acoustic dust and the inevitability of a new understanding.

As audio forms become frozen through boundaried and critical practice, the listener is left with an insight into the possibilities of our technological era. The Flaneur will inspire, surprise and delight, in equal measure.

Malekko Heavy Industry // Manthers, Modulars and Russian Submarines

Published on Mar 23, 2020 DivKidVideo

"As part of 'DivKid's West Coast Adventure' (more on that below) I had the chance to head down to Portland, Oregon and go see Malekko Heavy Industry and their Darkplace Manufacturing facility too. It was a pleasure to meet Josh Holley, Paul Barker, Ben Davis, Anna Sitko and the rest of the team. I had a nosy around (camera in hand for the b roll) and grabbed some footage with two different Eurorack modular systems and also the very lovely Manther! Across a couple of days I also sat down with founders Josh Holley and Paul Barker for a casual interview, learning some background as well as looking to the future.

Exploring Serge patch techniques from 'My First Serge Patch' // #JAMUARY2020 DAY 31

Published on Jan 31, 2020 DivKidVideo

"Let's end #JAMUARY2020 with a "first", ending on a first, seems like a nice thing to say and do. Here's exploring some Serge patching techniques (these can apply to any format) based on my first Serge patch on my Edelweiss Serge panel that I took to Matthew Shaw's studio for a literal first patching of that system. With some ideas from Matthew about using the DUSG as syncing oscillators it turned into a 3 oscillator synced sub harmony chordal voice that faded in and out and sequenced itself beautifully. I couldn't replicate the sync/locked sub harmonies quiet the same as the first patch but it was fun to re build this and share some Serge format content with you."

Dirty sound design & sequencing with the MOK Waverazor // #JAMUARY2020 DAY 27

Published on Jan 27, 2020 DivKidVideo

Fun to look at.

"Let's get the week kicked into touch and off to a banging start. Here's some nasty and dirty sounds out of the MOK Waverazor Eurorack module. There's TONNEs (how many eurorack CV inputs constitute a tonne?) of modulation inputs so I thought I'd throw lots at it, jam with envelopes, VCA offsets, sequences and muting drums in and out and get lots of sounds and sequences flying by. Love it.

Exploring the colourful new Dreadbox Eurorack modules // #JAMUARY2020 DAY 22

Published on Jan 22, 2020 DivKidVideo

"Doing these JAMUARY videos daily has turned into moving between making music, exploring new gear, indulging in simple sounds and FX and in the latter videos, talking through things like a first patch or exploration of a patch of piece of gear. Here we have a quick walkthrough a patch I set up using the new Chromatic series of Eurorack modules from Dreadbox. I've been having lots of fun with the modules that all offer a lot more than the basics of their functions (quantising on the VCO, octave CV etc filter with mixer + VCA ... )."

The empty moons of Jupiter - Roland Jupiter Xm & Empress Effects Echosystem // #JAMUARY2020 DAY 19

Published on Jan 19, 2020 DivKidVideo

"Here's two really nice pieces of equipment for day 19 of JAMUARY. In total contrast to the full wavewrapping distortion of yesterday here's a really beautiful patch from the Roland Jupiter Xm going out dry with a send and return reverb mixed in on the Echosystem from Empress Effects in 'ambient' mode. I'm just playing around with simple chords with varying inversions and open voicings."

NANO Modules ALT // basic to advanced patch techniques AM synthesis, auto panning, sidechain + more!

Published on Jan 14, 2020 DivKidVideo

"Here’s ALT from NANO Modules. A quad VCA module in an 8hp Eurorack format. Three channels features both manual gain (level, bias or offset) as well as CV inputs with CV attenuversion (attenuation and inversion) which gives lots of control and opens up the module to sidechain and ducking like FX as well as easily making auto pan FX too. The fourth channel is a more basic VCA with input, CV input and output. This is normalised open until you plug in a signal which is useful for the onboard mixing. ALT is also a mixer, either for basic mixing of audio or CV, for CV mixing, for cascaded mixing (2x 2 input mixers, 1x 3 input mixer + a VCA …). This video aims to go through the basics to more advanced patching answering the age old modular questions “WHY YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH VCAS!” Going from basic amplitude control to full on AM synthesis and patching up other FX and dynamic modulations of modulation. For those comfortable with how VCAs work skip ahead with the timing index below to get right to the patch tips.

Mark Mosher #Jamuary 2020 Day 13

Published on Jan 13, 2020 Mark Mosher

"For my #jamuary2020 Day 13 I'm using only my trusty @nordkeyboards Nord Lead 4 with 3 custom presets from "init" arranged into a "performance" with a split.

For those not familiar with the Nord Lead 4, it has 4 complete synthesizers each with their own FX each. Presets called "programs" can be placed into one of four "slots". Slots can be combined into "performances" where you can perform with all four slots in concert.

For EACH synth instance you create both impulse and continuous morphs which allow you to save states for pretty much any parameter in for the preset in a slot without changing presets 😮.

You can save and trigger 7 impulse morphs per slot with impulse morph buttons on the left next to the wooden pitch stick. Morph buttons are momentary switches but you can latch them as I do 26 second mark. Continuous morphs are mapped to the groovy pumice mod wheel (or map this to an expression pedal).

I used this custom set of presets and "performance" when I performed as a special guest for the Boulder Laptop Orchestra (BLOrK) at the @cu_atlas Atlas Black Box at @cuboulder back in 2017. For this performance I used only the Nord Lead 4 with 14 programs each with a large number of morph states. Video here https://youtu.be/ScpItttfGlY.

In a somewhat related note I'm a @uccs_alumni so it was real treat to perform within the CU system 😀.

I kind of cheated ... self playing ZOIA patches (Empress Effects) // #JAMUARY2020 DAY 13

Published on Jan 13, 2020 DivKidVideo

"** Anyone called Floyd that's pink and feels like running? ** With the brilliant news that there's a new Eurorack version of the Empress Effects ZOIA the "ZOIA EuroBuro" as announced by Empress Effects today (link below) I thought I'd crack out the ZOIA pedal and well ... CHEAT! I say cheat as I didn't really do much musical creating today, I just flicked through some ZOIA presets and let some self running patches play away beautifully. There's a lot of rich and lush sound from ZOIA so I figured this can be more of a little ode to ZOIA and sort of a promo for it's self contained capabilities (not sponsored). I've had great fun with my guitar into it and the modular so more exploration to come."

#Jamuary2020 // Downtempo 2 - Digitone, Minilogue, Tensor, Particle V2, RV-500

Published on Jan 13, 2020 Soular Order

"My third jam for #Jamuary2020. Another downtempo one, this time featuring the Digitone, Minilogue, Tensor, Particle V2 and the trusty RV-500.

The Digitone is sequencing arpeggiated chords and a plucked bassline, plus is used for a live pad. The Minilogue is used for the live lead. I used the Tensor to build a looping pad made from some of the notes from the Minilogue, which is then run through Particle V2 for graininess and then into the RV-500 for some reverb."

"There was another jam all ready to record before this one came about, but at the last moment I pulled a creative hissy-fit, tore the patch down and went in a very different direction.

The Minibrute is heading through the trusty Zoom MS-CDR70 providing two lots of delay (to add rhythmic interest) and a reverb (because reverb). The Monologue is heading through the Digitech Polara reverb (because reverb) and the Volca Kick is dry as a bone (because I ran out of pedals)."
