MIND Music Labs ‘Powered by ELK’ Retrologue 2 Desktop Synth

Note the VST logo on the bottom left, to the right of the ELK logo. This is VST powered. Curious if it will be able to run different synth engines. Press release follows.

MIND Music Labs lets ‘Powered by ELK’ Retrologue 2 desktop synth prototype fly for Steinberg at SUPERBOOTH19

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN: Mind Music Labs is proud to announce a continuation of its official partnership with music and media production products provider Steinberg — initially resulting in the German giant’s VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plug-in format natively supporting the integration of the Swedish startup’s ELK MusicOS, allowing VST- based plug-ins to run seamlessly in ‘Powered by ELK’ musical instruments and audio processors — by bringing a brand-new, co-developed desktop synth prototype with full MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) support to SUPERBOOTH19 in Berlin, May 9-11…

“Plug-ins and software synths have brought amazing power and flexibility to computer-based recording, but now musicians want to harness all that power without the computer; there are times when you want to twist real knobs, rather than wiggle a mouse.” So says MIND Music Labs CEO Michele Benincaso, before adding: “It’s really exciting to be empowering those users with ELK MusicOS.”

This sentiment is clearly shared by Florian Haack, Senior Marketing Manager at Steinberg: “We immediately saw the potential of ELK MusicOS, and that’s why we added it to the official VST SDK [Software Development Kit]. The development of the ‘Powered by ELK’ Retrologue 2 hardware prototype has further strengthened our belief that, with the help of ELK MusicOS, VST can become a standard for not only software, as it is today, but also for hardware.”

Having said that, then, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting. The proof-of-concept ‘Powered by ELK’ Retrologue 2 desktop synth prototype — running Steinberg’s Retrologue 2 VST Virtual Analog Synthesizer, successfully emulating the warmth and fatness of classic analog synthesizers — will be being showcased for all to see and hear on Steinberg-owner Yamaha’s booth (H310) at SUPERBOOTH19 in Berlin, May 9-11.

New Yamaha EMX Powered Mixers

Not a synth, but you can definitely plug your synths into them. Thought some of you might be interested and Yamaha is a valued supporter of MATRIXSYNTH.

These new models:

- Incorporate powerful new professional features as well as an updated look and interface

- Provide better performance and ease of use than ever before

- Appeal to a wide range of users and a wide range of applications — bands and mobile DJ performances in small- to mid-sized events, worship, nightclub, retail business installations, etc."

The official press release:

"Yamaha EMX Series Compact Powered Mixers Deliver Powerful Performance, Greater Portability and Updated Look

BUENA PARK, Calif. (June 23, 2016) – Yamaha today unveiled the latest models in the company’s popular EMX series powered mixer lineup, which incorporate powerful new professional features as well as an updated look and interface.
Since its debut 30 years ago, the EMX Series has earned its stellar reputation by providing users having little or no live sound reinforcement experience with a compact, reliable, versatile and easy-to-use mixer requiring minimum setup and connections. Yamaha is the best-selling line of powered mixers in the U.S.

Like their predecessors, each of the new models – the EMX2, EMX5 and EMX7 – seamlessly integrates a mixer, power amplifiers and digital effects into a single chassis, requiring only speakers and microphones to realize a fully functioning sound system.

The EMX2, EMX5 and EMX7 all feature Class-D power amps delivering 500, 630 and 710 Watts respectively of power, offering lightweight, yet powerful sound reinforcement options for bands and mobile DJ performances in small- to mid-sized events, as well as for worship, nightclub or retail business applications.

All models include legendary Yamaha SPX effects for hall, plate, room and echo reverbs. The EMX2 and the EMX5 include an updated 1-Knob Master EQ™ sound contour control to easily adjust the overall sound frequency balance. The EMX7 features a flex-type graphic equalizer (Flex9GEQ) that allows the user to select up to nine bands out of a total of 31 for fine tuning±15 dB.

A new Feedback Suppressor incorporating proprietary Yamaha digital technology instantly eliminates annoying feedback with the single push of a button.

Inspired by the Yamaha STAGEPAS 600i Portable PA System, the entry level 10-input EMX2 features 500 Watts (2 x 250 Watts) of amplification, four high quality microphone pre-amps and three stereo line inputs. This model is surprisingly compact (14.8” x 5.8” x 8.7”), making it easy to fit along with speakers in the trunk of a small car.
Moving up the line, the EMX5 and EMX7 each offer 12 input channels and can output to 630 Watts and 710 Watts respectively. Users can connect up to eight microphones or line-level devices, such as keyboards and CD players and portable MP3 players.

The EMX5 and EMX7 are housed in an impact-resistant, powder-coated metal chassis for a robust, yet extremely portable design that allows for convenient operation on either a tabletop or in a rack (rack mount brackets available separately). Large handles on the front and back of the body serve double duty, making the mixers easy to lift while protecting knobs and terminals on the surface of the chassis from impact or pressure.

While these mixers are capable of higher than expected sound pressure levels (SPL), they actually consume less power than previous models with more compact form factors.

'The Yamaha EMX Series has a proven track record of excellence, offering a winning combination of great sound, affordability and portability,” said Nithin Cherian, marketing manager, Pro Audio division, Yamaha Corporation of America. “Each of these new models provide better performance and ease of use than ever before, and will appeal to a wide range of users in a wide range of applications.'

All three models feature Phantom Power to allow the user to plug in condenser microphones for higher audio quality and better frequency range. For even greater flexibility, input 4 on the mixers features a high-impedance input for acoustic guitar or bass without the need for external processing.

And because each of the EMX Series models incorporates the amplifiers, users can easily connect passive speakers or add a Yamaha DXS Series Powered sub-woofer via a single connection, for configuring a PA system that requires a more prominent bass performance.

Pricing and Availability
The EMX2, EMX5 and EMX7 will ship in August; price to be determined.

Yamaha Soundmondo Social Sound-Sharing Site for Reface Synths

Yamaha has launched Soundmondo, a resource site for Reface synth owners to share their patches. The following is the official press release:

"Soundmondo Social Sound-Sharing Website Lets reface Users Inspire and be Inspired Any Place, Any Time

BUENA PARK, Calif. (January 8, 2016) — Yamaha has officially launched Soundmondo (www.soundmondo.com), a groundbreaking social sound-sharing website for sharing reface Mobile Mini Keyboard sounds.

Soundmondo is one of the first sites to implement WebMIDI, a new W3C (API) pioneered by Google in Chrome (versions 43 and later) earlier this year. WebMIDI connects MIDI devices to the Internet allowing musical instruments to play online synthesizers, as well as save or share sounds with Soundmondo. Because WebMIDI is part of Chrome, Soundmondo works on Mac, PC and Android devices.

The Yamaha reface Mobile Mini Keyboards are the first instruments to work with Soundmondo. Featuring four models, each with a unique tone generator and control panel, reface empowers users with an easy way to store, recall, organize and share their sounds.

'Soundmondo is social sound-sharing for synthesizers,' said Nate Tschetter, marketing manager, Music Production, Yamaha Corporation of America. 'Back in the day, synthesizers had patch sheets where sound re-creation was a manual process of duplicating settings from a printed diagram. Soundmondo instantly sends the sound to your instrument and visually shows you how to re-create it. It’s like having your own personal synth programmer on call 24/7.'

Saving sounds on Soundmondo is easy. Once the user connects their instrument and sets up an account, they simply hit CREATE and give their sound a name, a description and tags. They can also add a YouTube video and SoundCloud audio to really show off their sound.

According to Tschetter, the real fun comes in checking out sounds created by other Soundmondo users. BROWSE shows all available sounds (currently over 1,200), and the user can refine their search using tags. Once the user finds a sound they might like, they simply click on it and hit SYNC. This will send the sound to their connected reface AND show them how to move the controls to recreate the sound.

For reface DX users, there’s an added bonus: a full editor showing all parameters with full navigation and editing using a computer keyboard.

Yamaha reface Mobile Mini Keyboards, introduced this past summer, feature built-in speakers and battery power along with interactive controls, incredible keyboard feel and great sound for a truly pro instrument that lets musicians create their sound any place, any time.

"UVI introduces a massive library inspired by four 90s classic keyboards – the Yamaha SY77, the Korg M1, the Roland D50 and the Ensoniq VFX : UVI Digital Synsations

A NEW BREED

In the late 80's and early 90's the synthesizer landscape began to change. A new breed of keyboards began appearing in shops, records and on stage; matte black behemoths eschewing the familiar knob arrays for uniform clusters of discrete buttons and glowing green LCD screens. They signaled more than a shift in interaction with our musical counterparts‚ they ushered in the era of the digital synth.

To those willing to forgo the immediacy and ease-of-editing of the analog synth world these keyboards offered amazing features for the time; massive polyphony, extensive on-board sequencers and pattern memory, removable storage and digital effects. In addition to the immediate benefits of digital processing some of these keyboards also dawned innovative hybrid synthesis techniques, combining sample playback with classic methods allowing synthesists and musicians the opportunity to explore new sonic territory.

4 CLASSICS, MASSIVE PATCH LIBRARY

The possibilities with a few of these classics was more than we could bear and became the inspiration for our new project, Digital Synsations. We took 4 classic keyboards from the era and set our sound designers loose, tasking them to return with boundary-pushing sounds‚and they did. Digital Synsations includes over 500 patches expertly programmed on a fully restored Yamaha SY77, Korg M1, Roland D50 and Ensoniq VFX‚ used by many of the greats including Depeche Mode, The Cure, Pet Shop Boys, Vangelis, Brian Eno, Toto, 808 State, Jean Michael Jarre and more.

PRISTINE SOUND, DEEPLY EDITABLE

We deeply multi-sampled these custom patches using top-shelf equipment and edited them to perfection before sending them off for professional mastering. These sonics became the foundation for our new hybrid instrument and combined with the UVI Engine give you the true character of these classic synths with all of the peculiarities and programming by products intact. Not only that but you get them in an extremely easy to use and fast to edit environment complete with all the features you expect from a modern virtual instrument.

If you're looking for a new take on the 90's sound or just some new classic synth inspiration then look no further.

SYNSATIONAL INSPIRATIONS

The SY77 combines next generation FM synthesis with 16-bit sampled sounds from internal memory or stored on removable ROM cards. The AFM engine on these synths allows you to freely apply filters and envelopes to any of the sampled sounds and then roll the resulting waveforms back into the FM algorithm prior to further filtering. This novel approach, dubbed RCM hybrid synthesis, can be used to yield extremely versatile sonic results.

The M1 employs AI (Advanced Integrated) synthesis, a hybrid synthesis engine that allows the creation of sounds made up of 16-bit multisamples or harmonic tables generated from by digital analysis from sample data similar to additive synthesis. These methods can be employed in parallel for even greater sonic diversity.

The VFX used a wavetable like synthesis method similar to that of the PPG Wave. Up to 6 waves can combined and layered into a single patch which feeds an impressive array of dual multi-mode filters, three 11-stage envelopes, an LFO and a 24-bit effects processor. Advanced parameter mapping allows up to 15 sources to be used for extremely complex modulations and sound shaping.

The D50 provided a purely digital signal path allowing the combination of 8-bit PCM samples with linear arithmetic synthesis to produce single hybrid sounds or complex cross modulations between the two. Furthermore you could layer two of these sounds together into a patch for a total of 4 digital OSCs. Each OSC could be independently programmed resulting in a remarkable variety of tonal possibilities.

We have received numerous requests from musicians and composers to develop a replacement for Yamaha's breath controller BC3A.

The result is the MIDI Breath Controller, which has the same function as a combination of the BC3A and the "MIDI solution" converter box but with a USB interface instead of the older standard DIN connector.

The MIDI Breath Controller uses a novel signal processing algorithm to transform the breath pressure signal to MIDI cc messages that let you add realistic expression to your performance. This is extremely useful for live performance with synthesizers and DAW's. It gives you excellent control of pitch, expression, velocity cross-fade etc... of soft synths and sample libraries

Take 6 iconic vintage synthesizers, carefully restore them, create a massive array of presets and deeply multi-sample them, professionally process and master the sounds, infuse them into the industry proven UVI Engine -- giving you endless sound shaping options, then wrap the results in immaculately prepared GUIs and you've got UVI Vintage Legends.

At UVI we've been producing sound for over 20 years and designing our own software for over 12.

We've found that virtual instruments with a foundation in sampling have a more defined character and distinct sound quality than those based on digital modeling. The trouble with sample-based instruments is that they're typically lacking in expression and flexibility; one sample, one sound.

UVI hybrid instruments are more flexible than a conventional ROMpler and more authentic than a simulation, giving you the best of both worlds. Vintage Legends integrates over 30,000 samples from classic synths into the acclaimed UVI Engine, giving you the distinct character of hardware with the added control, convenience and power of a modern digital instrument.

Taking these classic tones into new sonic territory, the UVI Engine delivers massive unison spreads, abundant polyphony, thick-modeled filters, drive, reverbs, modulation, FX and much, much more. These instruments will never need to be serviced or go out of tune, and they're far easier to lug around than hardware.

SIX POWERFUL VINTAGE MACHINES REVISITED

Vintage Legends comes packed with over 800 presets expertly crafted by our sound design team, giving you a huge library of unique sounds and textures.

Each instrument features an intuitive and evocative GUI with a versatile and easy-to-navigate control set helping you to quickly shape sounds to fit your needs, transform them for wild inspiration or crack open the unit and design your own.

More in that anything new will get the label whether it's shown at NAMM or not. It's about new gear. Updates in this post will be preceded in red. Some already in below. See "The NAMM List!" link under the Twitter, Facebook, and RSS labels on top of the right to get back to this post later.

(A note on the top site menus: I removed the iPhone and iPad labels as they go up in posts every day now so you can find them there. eBay links are on the right, so I removed it as well.)

That said, the following are some of the things to look out for. If you have any NAMM info feel free to comment and/or send it in. If I missed anything, let me know! If you are going to NAMM, feel free to send pics and video in.

Ultravox Live Aid

YouTube via Indio70. "The 2 songs that were edited out off the official DVD... here they are again enjoy."

Ultravox performing Reap the Wild Wind followed by One Day at Live Aid 1985. One Day is definitely the stronger performance. It's almost like they are just warming up with Reap the Wild Wind. The performance gets even better below. Be sure to catch Vienna. Billy whips out the violin. In the video above: Midge on E-Mu Emulator II and Billy on a Yamaha DX7 and Kurzweil K250.

I remember staying up until the wee hours of the night/morning to catch this live when it was first aired. I forget if they aired all four songs in the US but I definitely remember Vienna and at least one other. If you remember, feel free to comment.

BTW, Midge Ure was the co-organizer behind Live Aid, but for whatever reason I only remember seeing Bob Geldof receiving most of the limelight. I always wondered about that. Probably because Geldof was the main organizer and he was a bit more known in the states? Who knows...

"Here is the 2 other songs from Live Aid -85. These made it on the DVD. Classic Ultravox moment. Don't forget 2 view the other part, with the 2 songs that was cut out of the final DVD."

Dancing With Tears in My Eyes followed by Vienna. Chris Cross on PPG Wave 2.2. I also think I see an Oberheim DX drum machine next to the Emulator in this one. Billy on DX7, MIDIBoard and Violin. Midge on the Emulator.

Anyone know what was used for the drum effect in the original recording of Vienna? I always loved that particular sound.
