EMS SYNTHI HIFLI GUITAR SYNTHESIZER EFFECTS PROCESSOR

images via this auction

"The Hi Fli (aka The Sound Freak) was designed by David Cockerell in 1971 for EMS. He later went on to design many of the classic Electro Harmonix effects (both the Micro Synth and Small Stone phaser are inspired by the Hi Fli). Only 350 were made making it a collector’s gem. David bought a prototype in 1972 and from what he recalls it was “very, very expensive”.

The Hi Fli was actually referred to as a synthesizer in the original ad, but it’s basically an analog multi effect processor, which can be used on vocals, guitars and organs. It has two footpedals, which could be routed as control voltages/expression pedal to any of the slider functions. It’s got no memory to bank up settings, - everything is in real time, so one had to manually tweak the sliders for each tone change.

Features; top boost (30dB treble booster), octave shifter (1 drop), buzz (treble booster to octave effect), ring modulator, sustain fuzz, solo/strum sensitivity control, bypass, modulation selector (rotary, phaser, vibrato and different types of auto-wah).

David is seen using the Hi Fli at Earl’s Court in May 1973. It was also used on the Dark Side of the Moon recording sessions. It’s not reported which songs he used it on, but it might have been for creating auto wah effects on Any Colour You Like and fuzz on live versions of Time.

The Hi Fli is still in David’s possession and last seen at the Interstellar Exhibition in Paris in 2004."

EDP SPECIAL WASP

via this auction

Note there is more going up on MATRIXSYNTH-B as well.

"Later versions of the Wasp included the Wasp Special (released 1981) which came with wood panels, a black and gold color scheme, and an internal power supply but no built-in speaker. And then there was the Wasp Deluxe (released 1979) which had all the features of the original plus a standard 3-octave keyboard, wood panels, an oscillator mixer, external audio-in, a larger speaker, and battery operation. EDP also produced a heavily modded Wasp that was built into a guitar form called the Keytar. It had a two octave keyboard and transpose and portamento buttons on the neck, only two were ever made as far as we know."

EMS REHBERG SYNTHI E

via this auction
"The Synthi E is a general purpose electronic music synthesiser especially designed to be used in schools and colleges. It combines low cost with versatility and robustness. It is simple to use and a complete teaching course has been built round it. This allows teachers and students to learn the techniques and background of electronic music and its production. The manual relates synthesised to acoustic sounds and the relationship of the physical properties of sound to music. It also provides many creative exercises for the individual or class. The Synthi E has a full complement of conventional electronic music devices as well as several new ones. These devices may be interconnected using a simple patching system that allows experimentation not possible with usual performance synthesisers. The unit is easily transportable as it is housed in a small briefcase and is battery operated.

MAIN FEATURES INCLUDE:
* Input Amplifier with low (Microphone) and high (line) level inputs.
* Envelope Follower providing a voltage proportional to the amplitude of the input.

"I use Roland SH201. Two Saw tooth waves stacked on top of each other, seperated and octave and pushed through a Fender Combo. Ah the joy of simplistic brute tones. Prior to acquiring the 201, I used a MicroKorg. Loved the MS2000 sound engine, but the little synth started giving out after a few years -- I'm guessing the circuit board's placement didn't help (beneath the keys plus my sweat build up). We have songs on our page and a video coming in a few days. You don't have to do anything for it if you don't want, we are just trying to do our own thing while taking from the past; pure synth punk."

Moog MP201

Box shot via brian c.
"SN 84. The shipping box lid requires you to cut through the label on top so I took this picture before I cut through it pretty cool, my only beef is that there is no software editor so you have to pick it off the floor to program it which means pulling up 4 CV cables, 2 MIDI cables , power and USB cables which is kind of awkward, or you can leave it on the desktop but that makes it hard to use with your foot anyway its way cool, 4 LFOs out as CV and/or MIDI CC, this will make my filters sing for sure"
Update via brian in the comments: "two other things:
1. the LFOs synch to MIDI or tap tempo as an option
2. there are 50 presets so if you plan ahead you don't have to pick it up very often"

YouTube via cerupcat. via sequencer.de
"AudioTouch is an interactive multi-touch interface for computer music exploration and collaboration. The interface features audio based applications that make use of multiple users and simultaneous touch inputs on a single multi-touch screen. A natural user interface where users can interact through gestures and movements, while directly manipulating musical objects, is a key aspect of the design; the goal is to be able to interact with the technology (specifically music based) in a natural way. Users can load, exit, and move musical applications using gestures as well as have a multiple applications operate within the same work environment. The design is built into a table that hides all the hardware necessary for tracking multiple inputs as well as displaying visual feedback on the touch surface."

Halloween Theme Song on Synthesizer (Requested Video)

"This is a requested video from someone on YouTube who's name I still can't remember (I deleted the request from my inbox). But he asked me to play the Halloween Theme song on my Casio. He also wanted to know what model my pianos were. My main piano is a Yamaha YDP-121, which is the big piano that you can see in my other videos, and the Casio is a CTK-401 synthesizer keyboard. I don't like it very much because the keys stick and the speakers crack. So that's why I hooked it up to my Sony STR-AV460. I hope you enjoy the video!

Baby Elephant Walk - Nord C1 (Clavia) Hammond B-3 clonewheel

YouTube via rounder2u
"Here is my version of 'Baby Elephant Walk'.
Henry Mancini wrote the soundtrack for the 1962 movie 'Hatari'. Hatari means 'danger' in Swahili. The movie itself didn't perhaps became an enormous hit, but one song in the soundtrack did very well!
Mancini wrote a brief piece of incidental music to go with a scene where a baby elephant is taken for a walk. The little song became an international hit as 'Baby Elephant Walk', and has been recorded by a large number of artists and in many different styles.
Congo, the baby elephant in the filming, died in November 2000 at the Dubbo Zoo in Australia.

This is an easy-going song. For a bit of contrast I added some fire in the two solo choruses :-)

"Famous Musicians" FIlmstrip featuring Morton Subotnick

via Peter Grenader of Plan B: "When I was in my last year in high school I worked in the school library. One day screwing around in the backroom I came upon a series of filmstrips which highlighted famous 20th century musicians and to my surprise, delight, whatnot found one from the series on Mort. I had just been accepted to CalArts and was looking forward to beginning my studies there so this was a big deal for me. Truth be told, the only image I had a visual memory of was a shot of his door bell. Years later I spoke to to Mort about this - if he remembered doing it, he did, but mentioned regrettably he no longer had a copy. I then set off to hunt one down. There were a few weeks there with only moderate progress but i finally tracked down the woman who made it; Jane Beethoven (that's actually her name). A few months later after returning from a trip to europe she graciously sent one and the stills from that presentation have been uploaded to his site.... including the infamous close-up of the door bell! This is a unique glimpse into the studio where some of the most influential west-coast music of the 20th century was created, including SIlver Apples, Wild Bull and Touch. Check it out, it's great.

Go to mortonsubotnick.com, select the archive gallery and scroll to the bottom of the page.

In the next few months the Library of Congress will be transferring the entire show replete with the audio track to modern technology and I'm confident Mort will be adding it as a quicktime presentation. Until then, enjoy..."
