Back In Time Concert 4 - November 2, 2008

Back In Time Concert 4
"This concert will begin at aproximately 1:59 AM when we will "Time Warp" for an hour long piece, and finish at about 1:58 AM a minute before we started. (Huh?)
On November 2,2008 at 2:00AM the clocks get set back an hour. Orbital Decay will be on-air going "Back In Time" to the late 70's with a concert featuring the synthesizers from this time period. Chuck Van Zyl the host of "Stars End" on WXPN 88.5 in Philadelphia, PA. has graciously invited us back for a fourth "Back In Time" concert. This piece will be played with mostly the older analog synthesizers. The years set will be a tribute to Richard Wright of Pink Floyd, who recently passed away."

via Terry regarding the gear:
"There are quite a few pic of vintage synths we use live, and this years live set up including an original 1969 Moog Modular System 1P and a 1983 Synclavier II. Every year for the past four years we do a Back In Time Concert when the clocks set back an hour, we time warp to the past and do an old school electronic music set. There are links on the page to hear the set live and more info on Stars End radio program."

Roland SVC-350 Vocoder Info-Sheet

YouTube via AnalogVocoder1.
Re-Uploaded on Nov 18, 2010

follow-up to this post. via robovoice on the forum. No vid, just sound.

"The Roland SVC-350 Vocoder is the first truly sophisticated vocoder to be priced within range of most musicians. The primary function of the Roland SVC-350 Vocoder is to analyze the spoken or sung human voice and use this information (or program) to trigger another musical signal (or carrier) giving the instrument the ability to 'speak' or 'sing'. This vocal synthesis is accomplished by processing the voice through a series of eleven 'Voice Character' analysis filters. All of the filters within the 'Voice Character Control' are active and control an envelope follower which reacts according to the volume of that individual frequency. This information is then used to shape those frequencies of the carrier (musical instrument) signal.

The Roland SVC-350 Vocoder uses ten filters for vowel sounds and there is also an extra filter with an extremely high slew rate allowing it to respond to the rapid transients of hard consonants, like the 'T' in the word 'today'. This consonant filter is a feature not found even on higher priced vocoders. The Roland SVC-350 Vocoder allows for both balanced and unbalanced program inputs and outputs and contains a special guitar input that permits attenuation of the guitar harmonics. Another remarkable feature of the Roland SVC-350 Vocoder is a special 'Hold' feature that locks onto the vowel sound quality so that one vowel sound does not have to be continually repeated while you play your instrument. With other features like the 'Ensemble' effect, head 'Phone' output, as well as guitar amp and line outputs...the Roland SVC-350 Vocoder is truly the next step in musical instrument effects.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Microphone Input (program): 1/4 phone jack or XLR connector 600 ohms -54 dBms min.
Instrument Input (carrier): 1/4 phone jack 100 k ohms guitar raw level
Guitar Amp Output: 1/4 phone jack 5 k ohms
Mono/Stereo Output: 1/4 phone jacks
Dimensions: 19(W)x 3.6(H) x 9.7(D) in."

METZ vintage monosynth?

via Pal of the Hungarian Oscillator blog:

"In the early eighties I saw a monosynth with an upright control panel like the MS-20 and I am 99% sure it was called METZ, because I even found it on the map (it is a town in France). I understand there is a company manufacturing electronic stuff with that name but I have not found anything, NOT A TRACE of that synth on the web. Have you heard about it?"

If anyone knows feel free to comment or shoot me an email. My contact info is on the bottom right of the site.

Update via Dirk:
"i've just found some Informations for the Metz Synthesizer on synrise.de

http://synrise.de/docs/types/m/metz.htm

Unfortunatley all the Informations are german but i've just did an translation:
(Feel free to modify it)

There are also 2 Companys called Metz, the first one is from germany which is building tv's and satelitte receivers the second one is from france and building heater / radiator stuff

Best wishes

METZ
The US American Mike METZ has developed an analogue synth for his own purpose

ANALOGSYNTH / mon syn exp kmi ?

Metz combined parts and construction units from various companies and putted it all together in an wooden case.

For example he used the oscillator bank and mixer (as used in the minimoog). All the parts were modificated. So the oscillator banks had PWM and the possibility for seperate pitch modulation

Also he had several outputs for each waveform. For each oscillator in the oscillator bank (there are in total 3 banks) there is the possibility of coarse- an finetuning. The vca and vcf are built from parts of the sequential circuits - prophet 5

There are also two envelope generators with cv controlls , an cv controlled lfo, an inverter, an attennuator, an gate delay and cv/gate interface."

I should have thought of looking at synrise! Someone once challenged me to find a synth not listed there. I thought I did, but apparently not. I forget what it was though. :)

Update via the maker himself, Mike Metz of Thesis Audio Service: "Here is all the info for the "Metz Synth", just before too much urban legend misinformation starts. This synth appeared in the Keyboard Magazine May 1998 issue as "Keyboard of the Month". I am amazed that someone remebers that.

It is a one-off synth that I built for my personal use out of "leftover" parts from my repair shop. The OSC section is made from an original Minimoog OSC board that I had in stock from repair parts. It has been built in a modular fashion with several options that the Mini never had. Each of the 3 OSCs has mixable waveforms, PWM, coarse and fine tune controls, and individual modulation inputs much like a modular synth. Thats the OSC section on the left.

The right half contains circuitry designed around the SCI Pro-1, not the Prophet 5, but the same thing. It contains a modular VCF with voltaged controlled Co and Rez. There are 2 voltage controlled envelope generators, a voltage controlled LFO, a VCA/envelope generator module, two attenuator / inverter modules, a gate delay module, and the master CV I/O module. All designed around the Curtis CEM circuits."
Side note: per above Mike Metz now runs Thesis Audio Service. It looks like we have a new (old) synth tech.

"Since 1976, THESIS AUDIO SERVICE has provided the midwest with quality, afforable repairs, maintenance, and restoration services on all types of equipment for musicians, sound companies and dealers."

Oberheim Matrix-12 Demo

YouTube via thegarranimal. via Switched On Synthesizer.
"This is an Oberheim Matrix-12 vintage analog polysynth, it is my personal favorite synth ever. Basses, strings, super-thick pads. Worth every red cent. Sound for this video was recorded into Cubase SX3 through an E-mu 1616M audio interface. Absolutely no effects were added. Probably half of the patches programmed by me! This demo is guerrilla style with mostly noodling - no rehearsing whatsoever - can you tell? So please take it easy with the comments....after all I spared you guys the Van Halen Jump riff the obies are famous for. Alas, maybe I make a better vid later."

Spin Semiconductor FV-1

"From the mind of the inventor who has revolutionized the music industry more than once with groundbreaking companies like Alesis and MXR Innovations comes the Spin family of audio effects solutions. These new Audio Effects ICs have been designed instictively to raise the bar and lower the cost of integrated sound effects with the same attention to features and detail that has brought so many innovations to the audio industry over the last 25 years"

"The Spin Semiconductor FV-1 is a complete reverb solution in a single IC. With integrated stereo ADC and DACs, the FV-1 can be treated like any other analog component in your products signal path.
The FV-1 can access a total of 16 programs, 8 are built in to the internal ROM and the designer may elect to connect a serial EEPROM with 8 additional programs. By using an external EEPROM, the designer can distinguish his product from others by creating a custom program set without the need for a microprocessor in the system.
With 3 potentiometer inputs, programs may have real time variable parameters such as decay time in a reverb, rate and depth in a chorus or frequency in a filter. These inputs are available as coefficients to your program and may be used independently of each other.
The rich instruction set allows users to program effects of all kinds. With instructions like LOG and EXP, users can easily program audio expansion and compression routines. Integrated digital LFOs and ramp generators allow for programming chorus, flange and pitch shift."

Note there is also a mixer solution built around the FV-1.

Moog Music MF107 Moogerfooger FreqBox Is NSFW, R, S Or S*

YouTube via gearwire
"Plugging into the Moog Music MF107 Moogerfooger FreqBox is not for the faint of heart, or of signal. This hulking stompbox houses a VCO that feeds off your guitar's input signal, and even though it sports a nifty hard sync switch, it's hard to keep the MF107 from completely freqing out. All part of the fun, isn't it?

The Freqbox will accept any input source, though in this video, Owen chooses to enter battle with an instrument he feels he can trust -- an ESP XTone PC-1V he's dubbed "Hrunting." Does it aid him in his trial? You'll have to watch and find out.

Jacques Chabot and the Acxel Resynthesizer

http://www.myspace.com/jacqueschabot

"In the course of the second phase, I acquired an Acxel resynthesizer, which at last enabled me to make the most of the composition and interpretation method I had designed with less performing equipment. In some ways, my new album “Des musiques de fous” is both continuity and a culmination as regards this method. It also marks the starting point of a third phase, “Les installations instantanées” that should result in at least a new album in 2009.

COMPOSITION AND INTERPRETATION: TECHNICAL NOTES

I have been using an extraordinary device for several years: an Acxel resynthesizer. This musical instrument serves as a synthesizer with subtractive synthesis and additive synthesis as well as a resynthesizer, and has an unparalleled capacity (256 independent oscillators that are programmable in real time). Québec engineer Pierre Guilmette created it. About ten or so working Acxels can still be found worldwide.

Thanks to this device, I developed an interpretation technique that enables me, each time I play a piece, to add improvisations to it while keeping its “essence” intact. The Acxel is so powerful that I no longer need sequencers and I merely use the keyboard as an “On-Off” trigger. After I play some notes, I activate the sustain mode and interpret the music by “sculpting” the sounds on the Acxel’s touch screen. Each sound therefore becomes a complete music that can hold several melodic or noise-like themes. In addition, in order to increase tenfold the power of the device, I sample the sounds that do not need to be modified in real time.

I developed this composition and interpretation method some 13 years ago. However, putting it into practice before owning the Acxel was far more limited."
