"Designed and engineered without compromise, thanks to years of feedback from professionals on the front line of touring and West End shows, the Xylosynth™ remains an unrivalled opportunity for mallet players to unlock the flexibility and convenience of MIDI whilst retaining the physical playing experience of an accoustic instrument.

Our revolutionary sensing and filtering technology means that the Xylosynth™ can bring the best out of your sound source with a vast dynamic range, and all with accuracy of triggering and lightning fast response time that means what you hear is exactly what you played. With the XS6, latency has now been all but illiminated, at a phenomenal 0.003 seconds or less, and speeds of 33 hits per second, per note will now be flawlessly recognised. The unique transpose pedal allows the player to shift to any key signature or switch octave in real time. Wee!

The Xylosynth’s solid hardwood keys unlock an unparalleled level of nuance and playability in any MIDI sound source. It looks, plays and feels just as a real instrument should and, thanks to intuitive hands-on control of note length and sensitivity, can gracefully adapt to your playing style. And the Xylosynth™ makes no demands for special technique - whatever your playing style or choice of mallets, the Xylosynth™ will make you forget that you are playing an electronic instrument, allowing natural glissandos and true expression..."

PPG Realizer for $25K at Big City Music

via Big City Music

"This is the legendary PPG Realizer that we have all heard about. From my understanding, only two of these were made. This is one of those two. Please contact us if you are interested in buying this rarity."

For those not familiar with the PPG Realizer, see this post from Nov 2005. In short it was PPGs attempt to create a virtual modeling synthesizer back in 1986. If you look at the knobs you will see lines going from each to the screen. The screen would actually show an image of the synth being modelled, with virtual knobs that the lines connected to. The Minimoog was the one in all the pics. Realize this is 1986. The graphics were green and vector like. See the post linked directly above for an image.

"An impressive exhibit from PPG was the Realizer (about $50,000). This consists of software versions of familiar synthesizer configurations. It allows you to design your own analog, FM digital, and sampled sounds, patch any of the components of one instrument into another instrument, and then sequence or sample the resulting sound. Wolfgang Palm, designer of the Realizer and head of PPG Instruments, earns the the quote-of-the-show award for explaining how he designed it: 'I copied the circuit diagrams into software.' No easy task."

Was the Realizer the first software modeled hardware synth? Credit typically goes to the Yamaha VL1 (1994 - Physical Modelling), Clavia Nord Lead (1995 - Analog Modelling/VA), and Korg Prophecy (1995 - Physical & Analog Modelling). Considering the ability to mix and match components, modern day hardware equivalents would be Arturia's Origin and John Bowen's Solaris. As for ability for the display and controls to morph into unique individual synths, the iPad would be the obvious realization of the Realizer.

Update via Wolfgang regarding the remaining two: "as far as i remember :) there were two left in the end.
one went to Steinberg, when i started to work for them in '87
the other remained in the USA with PPG America Inc.
but where these two systems ended up...i dont know."

Update via Peter Stone on FB: "I'm glad I was able to at least get a demo of the one in the L.A. office before the office closed. That and the HDU doing some great real-time time stretching way before it's time..." Sounds like it was indeed working. See the Facebook thread for more. Here's an interesting note from Andy Thomas regarding graintable synthesis: "I was scaring people with the time-stretched intro to the 1970s hit by Supertramp called 'Logical Song' in 1986/87. Peter, you and Kevin Lamb were there! All the graininess a synthesist could resample before we termed it granular!"

littleBits is a growing library of pre-assembled circuit boards that snap together with tiny magnets!

Just as Legos allow you to create complex structures with very little engineering knowledge, littleBits are simple, intuitive, space-sensitive blocks that make prototyping with sophisticated electronics a matter of snapping small magnets together.

With a growing number of available modules, littleBits aims to move electronics from late stages of the design process to its earliest ones, and from the hands of experts, to those of artists, makers, students and designers."

MS-812 - LFO - Copperduino Clock & Monitor

YouTube Uploaded by zebigbuild on Dec 15, 2011

"This is a demo showing how to configure an Alyseum MS-812 (emulator) to be controlled from an LFO and a Clock Generator through CopperLan. The end of the video shows a Copperduino application performing MS-812 outputs monitoring on an external display."

via Schneidersladen
"The MS-812 by Alyseum is an Eurorack module which creates the gateway between your CopperLan network and your Eurorack modular system.

The high number of CV and digital outputs gives you a very powerful MIDI-to-CV/Gate interface which can also carry clock outputs or can work as a MIDI-to-Sync24 converter. The module can be controlled by several computers in your network simultaneously.
technical details

The MS-812 works with 100Base-T networking technology and has a LAN socket as input, as all CopperLan devices do.
In the MIDI mode the MS-812 is 100% compliant to MIDI when used in the CopperLan network.
The unit offers 8 CV outputs and 12 digital outputs with free assignment of MIDI channels and controller. The CV outputs offer the full MIDI resolution (128 notes = full 0-10V).

Each CV Out can be used as note, setting or modulation source. Each DIG Out can be assigned as a Gate, Clock, Reset, status, control, simultaneous multiple clock outputs with different clock divider ratios or even as a MIDI-to-DIN Sync converter. For this use there will be an optional, color coded "5pin DIN to 3x 3.5mm jack" adaptor cable.

The unit is delivered with 32 presets. It offers 4 factory ROM memory slots and 32 customer RAM slots for saving your own presets. The firmware can be upgraded via the network.

In CopperLan mode there are additional features:

full CopperLan pitch range: from -10V to +10V
octal 16bit high-resolution converter for CVs
each CV output can output a note, a setting or a modulation
each DIG output can act as a gate, clock, reset, switching command etc.
Voice-ID management

inputs and outputs

input: ethernet socket (LAN socket)

outputs: 8x analog outputs for CVs and 12 x digital outputs
measures and weight

3U Eurorack module, 18HP wide, 40mm deep; current draw +80mA/-10mA
misc

The CopperLan technology allows for sending and receiving MIDI data thru common ethernet network cables. The extremely flexible routing of the different MIDI devices is done by the free CopperLan-Manager software.

Jammin in the Studio (CS 80 type sounds)

"Wanted to go for a CS 80/Vangelis type sound or at least timbre on this one. Not very good keyboard skills but I make these videos mostly to demo the sounds anyways (I'm a guitarist). I have 2 voices of the poly from the arp 2600's and 2 voices from the Macbeth M5. The minimoog is playing the drone(ish) note, it has the studio electronics mods so it has an extra lfo you can mix in. In this video I used a sawtooth from osc 3 in lo freq and the sine wave from the extra oscillator. Also had the acidlab miami and the roland tr 909 playing along."

VCAMatrix quadrature patch with PEG

YouTube Uploaded by 4mspedals on Jan 5, 2012

"In this demo, we show how to setup a quadrature panning patch with a 4ms VCA Matrix, and two 4ms Pingable Envelope Generators on a Eurorack synthesizer.

Four oscillators are used for the A,B,C,D inputs on the VCA Matrix. They are being mixed on output 3 of the VCAM. The four corresponding CV points for A,B,C,D, are hooked up to the four Envelope outs of two Pingable Envelope Generators.
Halfway through an envelope's duration, the next envelope is triggered. (watch the button LEDs on the VCA Matrix). Thus creating quadrature panning.

To create 4 CV sources 90º out of phase, first enable Half-Rise trigger output in System Mode for all four channels of the 2 PEGs (see manual). Send the same clock signal to the four Ping inputs, with all divisions set to the same amount and skew set to center. Now, take the Half Rise Trigger output of the red channel of the first PEG, and plug it into the Async trigger input on the second channel of the first PEG. Continue the chain by plugging the blue channel Half Rise trigger output of the first PEG, into your second PEG's red channel Async trigger input, and repeat the same for the final blue channel of your second PEG, but now plug the last Half Rise output trigger (blue channel of 2nd PEG) back into the red channel's Async trigger input of the first PEG. Your two PEGs are now in a trigger loop.

Start up the first envelope by pressing any Cycle button on. This will start the next envelope once a Half Rise trigger has been sent to the next channel, and so on. But now that we have the last channel of the second PEG looped back into the first channel, we can turn off cycle, as it was used to just start the trigger loop. Use the ENV outs of the two PEGs, and voila, now you have four 90º out of phase CV signals that can be used for quadrature panning!

Once this is set up, you can tweak the PEG to your heart's content. If skew is set to center and Half-Rise is triggering the next channel's Async jack, then every envelope will start half-way through the rise of the previous envelope. Moving the skew knob around will create larger or smaller gaps in-between the envelopes. Changing the Curve knob will give you different envelope shapes.
You can also use EOR or EOF to trigger your chain of envelopes instead of Half Rise. End of Rise will give you greater spacing in between the different envelopes, effectively waiting twice as long to trigger the next envelope as using half rise would yield (assuming Skew is set to center). End of Fall can also be used for an even greater spacing between triggering (four times long if Skew is set to center)."

"History: This P5 is a Rev 3.2, 120 presets. No midi. Serial #2987. I bought it from the second owner in March of this year (2011). From the looks of it when I first got it, it was certainly babied. I've had zero problems with it, with the exception of the occasional broken j-wire (easy fix). It came to me with service documentation (done by Wine Country in 2004), at which point they performed their basic checkup. I replaced the key bushings with new ones a few of weeks ago (wow, what a difference!). The keys could still be leveled a bit, but I got them pretty close (for me anyways!) Its been in my smoke free studio since the day I got it, and hasn't moved (except to take these pictures)..."

via Innerclock

"Many years of living in a world of sequencing on analog gear, then laborously recording to computer track by track, then finally tweaking sync by hand just got solved. I have been using the Sync-Gen IILE from my computer to clock my studio together in perfect solid sync. From computer it goes to all sorts of devices, 808, 909, 303s, 606, Machine Drum, Mono Machine, a Tempest, a couple of analog sequencers driving a huge modular rig, and many other devices. I also use two Sync Shift MK II units to tweak grooves between it and devices. Everything I throw at it is handled as expected. This is a absolute must have device if you are using equipment with different formats and from different eras. It also excels even when you throw ultra fast tempos, or even strange tempo changes at it. Looking forward to seeing what else is cooking up in the secret labs at Innerclock Systems, and expanding my possibilities! Thank you - cyrusrex"
