Animusic 2 - Cathedral Pictures (complete!)

YouTube via Mechaffix326. You might remember Animusic from this post.
"Visit www.animusic.com if you're interested in watching this amazing Animusic video, along with seven, fourteen, or more other Animusic videos, with better picture and sound quality on DVD.

This is a computer generated video showing robots and self-operating instruments playing classical music inside a large building. There are pipe organs, clarinets, and flutes that emit light-beams as they play notes; some trumpets and tubas affixed to walls, and they stick out when they play individually; a one-stringed rock bass guitar played by a couple of robot hands that slide up and down its neck; a yellow synthesizer; and a drum set, and two large, curved instruments, the hammered dulcimer and the xylophone, played by robots that pivot and slide back and forth to hit their mark.

The music on this piece is from 3 movements of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" ten-piano suite.
They are:
"Promenade" [from start to 1:38]
"Hut on Fowl's Legs (Baba Yaga)" [from 1:38 to 3:45]
"The Great Gate of Kiev" [from 3:45 to end]

Do you notice the picture on the bass drums? It is a drawing of the Great Gate of Kiev complete with a bell tower to its right.

Some people have experienced Emerson, Lake & Palmer playing music that is very similar to this one."

Roland JX-3P

images via this auction

"Killer DCO analogue synth. Shares the same VCD chips as the Jupiter 8 (Roland IR3109 IC ) which are great sounding, rock solid, and will likely last forever. The rackmount version on the other hand are the same filter IC's that are in the Juno 106, the 80017a which are dying left and right from old age and in need of replacement. The unique polyphonic step sequencer (doesnt output to midi and syncs to Trigger voltage) and the vintage Roland style hold-transpose that are on the JX-3P are not to be underestimated. It's a long running debate, and an annoying one.. but I'll say it anyways. I would much rather have a JX-3P than a Juno 106 any day. There's an amazing and easy Mod for the 3P (search for JX-3P MIDI Mod) that enables realtime use of the control box + midi input at the same time, and many many other features including all parameters editable by MIDI CC

Polyphony - 6 voices
Oscillators - 2 DCO's per voice
Memory - 32 preset, 32 user
Filter - Resonant Low pass
Effects - Chorus
Arpeg/Seq - Simple Sequencer
Keyboard - 61 keys
Control - MIDI (no velocity except with a special ROM upgrade)
Date Produced - 1983"
VCDs? Anyone know about the Jupiter-8 comparison?

Update via Dave Cornutt in the comments:
"According to analog.no, the IR3109-based VCF was indeed used on the Jup8, as well as the other Jupiters, the Juno 6 & 60 and the first version of the MKS-80. The IR3109 is an operational transconductance amp, and all of the classic Roland filter designs are OTA-based.

The infamous 800017A actually contains an IR3109, so electrically it's the same. The problem with the 800017A is apparently a fabrication problem that allows metal migration and shorting between leads on the micro circuit board embedded in the IC.

As the poster noted, the MKS-30, which is the rack mount version of the JX-3P, uses the 800017A. I also know that the GR-700 guitar synth uses it too."

The Red Rig

images here
via Dave of umop.com
"Check out my brother's crazy-ass new electronic drum rig... he's spent months planning it & working on it!"
...
"OK folks... Here it is, in all its '80s glory: the 6-sided Red Rig. Made to mimic the look of the vintage drum pads, it's made of 100% PVC pipe and copper pad fittings. All custom designed - made it up as I went along. The wiring harness took about a day to make, and is almost completely hidden inside the tubes themselves. The ends just hang in place for quick connection to the pads when setting up, and to connect to the snake that feeds the equipment rack.

Black and red cymbals are made by Krest out of Brazil and took 8 months to get the order finalized and shipped. (There is only one U.S. rep.)

Not in place in these shots is the standard hi-hat stand (although I might try to paint it, too) which also uses black cymbals. "Gong" at rear works, and can trigger any sound source I feed it. (Sadly, I don't have an actual gong sound - yet. Need a rack-mount sampler.) The entire rig uses no standard metal pieces - except the hi-hat stand - and breaks down into smaller pieces. The top and bottom "rings" split in half, held together with quick-release hood pins - like from a race car.

The footprint is not significantly bigger than my old setup, considering my amp and rack can reside inside this space. It's 6'8" point-to-point. Biggest challenge is that the paint - which supposedly is formulated for plastic surfaces - scratches easier than a bag of rabid cats, even with multiple coats and 3 layers of urethane. This is what prompted me to go to the next level: I'm going to give it the Eddie Van Halen 'Frankenstein' look. May start doing it this weekend."

Update: new pics added to the set. "He Frankenstein-ified the red rig."

In this case, its the Machinedrum. The right side filter is set to 6dB high pass mode. We use the triangle LFO to modulate the cutoff frequency and then some of the resonance. We're also modulating the filter in parts with the envelope. You have both positive and negative envelopes at your disposal as well as two EG's that can control the VCA or filter(s) or both. Hopefully this video will come through in a high enough quality to notice the very fluid tone of the filter. This video shows a more subtle side of the Schippmann. There's more to come as we delve deeper, start to use some of the back panel features and stir up a raucous!"

Quasimidi Cyber-Six signed by Jean Michel Jarre?

images via this auction

Read the warning below

"HISTORY

That Cyber-six pertained to Jean Michel Jarre. I don't know exactly when he received it, but I first spotted it in his studio in Croissy while he was arranging "Odyssey through O2". Then after I took him to the underground catacombs, he used the Cyber-Six to compose the theme for "Paris Underground", a piece he played in concert on july 14th 1998. He loved the texture of the keys. He used it again to rearrange the song for the Apple Expo concert on September 18, 1998, but two days before the concert, he brought it to me so I could use it as a master keyboard to trigger the 3D effects live. Several months after the show, he very kindly gave me the keyboard, as I loved its feeling. Now, 10 years later, I don't play music as much, and I need to free up space, so I'm selling the keyboard. Anticipating that selling a luxury master keyboard would be difficult, JMJ put his signature on it, on Aug. 3rd 2008 (on a windy day on the sidewalk below my apartment). Selling it is OK with him. It is in very good condition, perfectly functional, always covered. Only minor wear to the wooden ends because of handling, and a few scratches to the back due to a non-padded keyboard stand. The money I collect from the sale will be split: one half for charity (Medecins Sans Frontières), and one half for new hardware for my studio.

THE CYBER-SIX
The Quasimidi Cyber-Six is a very original instrument: it is basically a very sturdy (and heavy) master keyboard, whose keys have a distinctive pebble-like texture. It has a medium-soft touch, with very responsive keys, and the black keys have slanted edges to facilitate playing on the white keys in-between. Very comfortable to play, robust and reliable. Exactly the contrary of those plastic USB keyboard.

The Cyber-Six also has a pretty comprehensive MIDI processor, which is a mix of a sequencer, a groovebox and an arpeggiator. With two MIDI outputs, it can control up to 32 channels, with a very interesting effect architecture, where each channel can be assigned sequences, patterns, "motivator" effects, etc. The user interface is a bit complex at the beginning, but when you learn it you realize it has been designed for stage jams. Very impressive how you can lay out the structure of a song, and modify it live while you're playing other parts. If you don't feel like learning it, there are a few presets to simply play with gated chords and complex arpeggios.

Unlike its brother the Raven, the Cyber-Six is not a synthesizer, just a masterfully designed MIDI keyboard. It is a perfect master keyboard for a computer-based studio or for racks of expanders.

Review here:
Fan discussion here:

WARNING
Just so I don't get complaints afterwards: The Cyber-six is a MIDI keyboard with impressive sequencer/rythm/enhancer capabilities, but it does NOT produce sounds, only MIDI notes. You need an expander or a sound module to use it. Also worth noting, JMJ reset it before he gave it to me, so do not expect to find unpublished sequences :)"

Doepfer Noodling (new age style) from Isotope Of Me on Vimeo.
"I felt like making some noise tonight, but didn't feel like getting into writing anything too structured, so I set the DSI Evolver's sequencer to modulating the filter, patched up the modular and fired up the camera (because nothing happens if the internet doesn't see it). Here's the result.

The Modular patch is the A-111 and A-110 cross modulating each other, while simultaneously outputting Sine, Square and Saw. The Sine is routed to the A-125 VC phase shifter, the Saw is routed to the A-121 multimode filter (output as bandpass), and the Square is re-triggering the A-147 LFO at audio rate. The LFO is then sent to the A-122 24db LPF. Both filters and the phase shifter are summed at the VC mixer, where their levels are modulated by ramp waves 45 degrees out of phase with each other via the A-191 Shepard Generator. The Shepard Generator is also providing triangle LFOs to modulate the cutoff frequency of the filters and phase shifter.

This patch evolves nicely on it's own, but I tweaked it a bit to try to keep it interesting.

When I was done, I felt like it needed a little something, so dumped it into Cubase, where I overdubbed a nice thin digital pad."

"A three pole diode ladder lowpass filter with voltage controlled resonance and a PCB licenced from Yves Usson.

There are two famous 3 pole diode ladder lowpass filters, one of them was in a little silver box of a synthesiser with integrated sequencer that was used to make "Acid Tracks" and the other one was was in a big suitcase of a synthesiser with a silver faceplate and semi- integrated sequencer that was used to make tracks on acid often. this is the latter. I'm not going to name any names here, but I'm hoping I don't have to mention any voltage controlled studios or electronic music studios to establish the lineage of this filter topology.

I can't promise this thing will make Sea Devils appear on your lawn or models of airplanes fly from one side of the stage to the other, crashing into a papier mache sun at the end of your song, so please don't be offended if these things fail to happen while using the filter, presuming you'd want to own one.

YouTube via dkimcg
"Making more fertilizer from some very nice modules two brainiac of sound designers made, but I'm just trying out two more new modules, the Livewire Dual Cyclotron and Dalek Modulator. The Dalek FMs the M15, the M28 is the master trigger device, which is reading the phase of the Doepfer LFO. The Cyclotron modulates a bunch of crap, and the M10 gates and also modulates and triggers other crap. And the M24 generates the freq CVs. I like the Livewire modules I got a lot. I have much more to explore with them. This patch almost sounds good, not quite a turd of a patch this time. Or am I wrong?

The DoubleDeka Ultrasonic VCO

via frijitz in this electro-music.com thread.

"The DoubleDeka is my new VCO. From the forthcoming documentation:
'This unique VCO consists of an ultrasonic oscillator core followed by a parallel pair of waveform generators. Each waveform generator consists of a switched multi- ctave divider followed by circuitry to generate a 10-step waveform using a set of 10 slider potentiometers. Also included are a novel synchronization circuit with two different operating modes and a built-in "digital ring modulator" (DRM) for producing a wide variety of synchronized and anharmonic sounds. The oscillator core is highly stable (better than 20 ppm/K in the prototype) and features wide-range, accurate tracking (better than 0.05% over fifteen octaves). The variable waveform generator provides fine control over an enormous range of available timbers.'

PCBs have been tested and will be available -- along with kits and panels -- from bridechamber.com.

For now here are some demos:
demo01 -- switching through the octaves and then moving the sliders around.
demo02 -- with fixed waveforms, switching through all the combinations of the octave switches.
demo03 -- a patch with the two waves fed through two VCFs.
demo04 -- four waves from two units; raw sounds without filtering.
demo05 -- sweeps of a Tri VCO fed into the the sync input (two sync modes) and then into the RM input.

Operates with a single 9 volt battery or standard 9 volt adapter.

Subdecay Prometheus Resonant Filter Pedal -- Hidden Features * The LFO rate can be adjusted to run much faster than the the step rate. This can be used to create very interesting arpeggiation. * The Depth knob can push the filter cutoff frequency outside of the audio range. This can be useful to create a slow attack effect. * The step rate can be turned up high enough for smooth modulation. This can be used to create and autofilter effect, that can sound similar to a phaser or tremolo. * A fixed filter effect is possible by turning the depth knob down all the way, and using the Frequency knob to set the filter cutoff."

This video demonstrates the system kernel's four channels wavetable-based "synthesizer" and the MIDI interface that allows composition of music straight on the console.

Important disclaimer: Since I'm a lousy chiptune composer, all songs are transcriptions of 8-bit gaming classics! Hope they bring your back fond memories. :)

Everything will be open source and open hardware. Look for my other Uzebox videos and please rate if your liked!

"patched without using 250e module which is the circular one in the middle of unit (a sequencer, to simplify)"
Funny note: this video reminded me of something I couldn't quite figure out at first. I then realized I had a pawn shop dream last night. In the dream, I had some formal appointment and had to head into the city (not a real city but one of those imagined ones). Anyway I see a pawn shop and decide to get off the bus and walk back to it. I get in and there are a number of synths all relatively overpriced, a DW8000 for $745 and a few synths that don't actually exist but I knew them in my dream. In the corner is a dusty 200e with a about 8 modules in it. I talk to the owner of the shop and he says he's going out of business and closing down soon. I ask him how much for this one (the buchla) and he says 18k and it needed a little work! I of course think, shoot! It's the same price as a new one with problems to boot. At the same time I'm a little relieved as I will not be spending money this time. I then head out for my appointment, no Buchla in hand. I totally forgot about this dream until seeing this vid. I love synth dreams, especially pawn shop ones. There was a time when I was having them every other night. You know you have GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) going when this happens. The best thing is when you find deals in real life and for a split second you literally think, oh no, another synth dream I'm going to wake up from. I picked up a TR-909 for $190 once, a JD-800 for $600 CDN (about $400 US), and a Pro-One for $125, all when prices were high for each. Each one had me wondering if I was going to wake up.

Twittering Machine: a kinetic, circuit-bent sculpture

"I completed this machine in Spring 2008. I started with a cassette recorder and a radio frankensteined together into a more "traditional" circuit-bent noise maker. I then added the Coke can sequencer and undead toy tucan. Finally I built a little trigger circuit to control the bird's motor and mounted it all on the outside of a plywood box. Reade Vaisman"

Tie Fighter Drums - Analogue Systems rs120 Comb Filter

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"This has to be one of the most affordable, incredibly fun modules ever made. You can get phaser, flanger, slapback, echo, and other crazy sounds out of the rs120. The module is based on an analog BBD delay. There is CV input for the delay time and if you turn up the resonance it will most definitely grow a self-oscillating feedback monster. Or, it could play nice. Here you hear the Jomox 888 drum machine running into the rs120 and later on in the video we use an rs85 LFO ramp-down wave to modulate the delay time. You can attenuate the amount of CV in directly on the module."

Dubreq Pianomate

via this auction

"vintage Dubreq Pianomate. Made in the 1970s in England, it's an odd add-on sound expander for a piano or several other types of keyboard instruments. The system consists of a small amplifier with built-in tone generators, a swell / volume pedal, and two "plunger bars" that attach to the keyboard of a piano or similar instrument. When the piano key is struck, the plunger touching that key drops down and the tone generator is triggered. It's nutty but kind of neat - Dubreq also made the Stylophone, so they knew all about wacky musical instruments.

This setup is complete, down to the original manuals and sheet music, and everything works. It sounds a lot like a Farfisa organ, and the amp gets pretty loud but you probably can't gig with it. This is more of a curiosity than a real professional instrument, but it is very cool if you're into kitschy and funky keyboard gear."

Be sure to read the details on this one if you are considering picking it up. The follow are just the mods:
" * CV and Gate inputs.
* CV input to turn on Slide. (V2.1D onwards: > 2.3 volts turns on the Slide circuit and > 4 volts turns on Gate to tie notes together.)
* CV input for Accent.
* CV input for Filter Frequency.
* Output for Accent.
* Audio In to filter.
* Audio In to frequency modulate the filter.
* Audio Out from filter (pre-VCA).
* Overdrive pot to control the level of oscillator going to the filter: zero to 66.6 times normal level.
* Separate control of Main Envelope Generator times in accented and non-accented notes.
* Volume envelope is no longer fixed, and can be varied from 16 msec through 3 seconds - and to no decay at all, i.e. for notes which last indefinitely.
* Soft Attack control gives attack times between 0.3 and 30 msec. (TB-303 attack was ~3 msec.)
* Slide time is variable to five times longer than normal.
* Variable Filter Tracking causes the oscillator CV to control the filter frequency.
* Internal Filter FM: a unique approach of AC coupled Filter FM from the audio output of the VCA.
* The Muffler is a unique post-VCA soft-clip distortion circuit which retains bass response.
* Push-button to manually activate Accent.
* Filter can be switched to self resonance.
* Accent Sweep has three modes and can be disabled.
* Filter Cut Off pot range doubled to 5 kHz max, and widened to include much lower frequencies.
* Env Mod pot range extended to include zero and go as high as three times the normal maximum.
* Bass response is improved.
* Lithium battery for at least ten years battery backup, so there is no need to install C-cell batteries.
* The six TB-303 knobs Tuning to Accent are mounted about 1.5mm higher than normal, which makes them easier to turn."
