PseudoSequencer

"Using 2 square wave LFO's of different magnitudes, summed together to control the CV in on a Doepfer A-110 VCO, gives 4 different pitches. Add some Analogue Solutions SY03 filter on the output, some Lexicon MX200 ping-pong delay, and season with some polysynth chords from the MicroKorg."

This reminded me of Inside Synthesis Episode 2: Sequencing drums and melodies using LFOs.

November Acid Pattern 2013

via Dylan Davis on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

"The November pattern was from Manic D.

15 tracks of acid goodness, a mix of styles from some hard acid to some slow mellow tunes, even a bit of jungle acid from John Faustus

For the synth nerds amongst you there are details of gear used for each track, where the producer has supplied it.

Some software and lots of hardware goodness all over this compilation."

Halim El-Dabh - Pest Control, Tape Manipulation & The RCA Synthesizer

Astronauta Pinguim has published yet another interview with one of the pioneers of electronic music.  This time around we have an interview with Halim El-Dabh (Portuguese version here).  It is a fascinating read.  He was the first person to create a musical composition using tape manipulation, and the source of his inspiration came from his work in agriculture.

"'My first exposure to electronic sound devices was back in 1943. As an agriculturist studying pest control, I wanted to see if sound-emitting devices could control tiny beetles that attack wheat, corn, alfalfa and beans. I thought that rather than getting rid of the beetles, we could distract them. I used to experiment with clanging together iron rods like bells; then I tried scratching the rods together to see if it discouraged the bugs.'"

"In 1944 Halim decided to record the ceremony of the Zaar (a female religious ceremony), he then treated the recordings he made on the ceremony using studio techniques and electronic devices and voilĂ , the first piece of tape manipulation in the world was born! (Note that it happened four years before Pierre Schaeffer released his first published works in France). The Expression Of The Zaar was Halim's only piece to be published from this period, but he created another pieces of tape manipulation mostly of street vendors in Cairo."

In essence, this was the birth of musique concrete.

On The RCA Synthesizer: "'The synthesizer was an innovation that gave us a larger expansion of sound manipulation. We used punch cards to input and receive sound from the machine. It took up a whole wall, it was huge. We were able to get very clear sounds of whatever we synthesized whether it was trumpet, violin or any other sound. I especially liked to input my voice. Luening did an input of his piccolo to transform it. I did an input of my drum to transform it and then took the sounds back from the synthesizer.'"

"Very rare opportunity to get your hands on a Plan B Model 10 Polyphonic Envelope module. These haven’t been in production for years and rarely come up for sale. I believe this is a mark one version which are even more sought after. I’ve just checked this and it is working perfectly. This is a fantastic module, the reason why they called it “polyphonic” is because it can output 4 different type of voltage “envelope” at the same time. You can manually trigger the envelope or it can be switched to cycle so it can act as an LFO with variable shape and can also go into audio range. It’s even got a cycle input so it can act as a burst generator."

Being Boiled - Martyn Ware demos Roland System 100 and Korg 700

Published on Dec 1, 2013 Failed Muso·59 videos

"Martyn Ware, founding member of the Human League and Heaven 17, as well as the British Electric Foundation and Illustrious, demonstrates the Roland System 100 and the Korg 700S 700. These are the original instruments that he and Ian Craig Marsh wrote and performed the original version of Being Boiled on.

This was the climax to a 45 minute talk given by Martyn, accompanied by the great Peter Howell of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, London, on the night of November 30th 2013. It preceded a performance by the BBC Concert Orchestra in the main hall, as part of their "The Rest is Noise" season. They performed works by Andrew Poppy, Michael Nyman and commissions by Anne Dudley, which saw the orchestra take on reinterpretations, or "remixes" of Art of Noise's "Into Battle" as well as a new work, Rhythm of a Decade, a mash up of themes from the decade, accompanied by a narration from Paul Morley.

All the other original members of the Art of Noise were present in the audience (Trevor Horn, JJ Jeczalik, Gary Langan), billed by them as a one off 30th anniversary reunion ;-)"

Update via Timothy Glasgow in the comments: "That's a straight 700; not a 700s."

He is correct.  The 700s had extra controls and a black case on the top left of the keyboard.  The 700 lacked this and had a wood or faux wood cover there.  In the video you can clearly see the wood.

PreenFM Polyphonic FM Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Up for auction is a ready-to-use PreenFM DIY synthesizer. It may look a little toy-like, but it's actually a rather powerful little poly synth with a very unique sound character. Like Yamaha's classic DX synths, the PreenFM uses FM synthesis, but it is not a DX clone. Instead, it has a pretty distinctive sound of its own.

Basic specs:
FM Synthesis with 9 different algorithms.
4 to 8 voice polyphony, depending on which algorithm is used.
Modulation sources: LFO, EGs, step sequencer.
Modulation matrix.
MIDI In and combined Out/Thru.
MIDI control over all sound parameters.

The unit sold here was carefully built and is fully working. It has the latest firmware version 2.0 installed, which was developed in collaboration with French synth guru Olivier Gillet (aka Mutable Instruments). The unit is in good cosmetic condition. Mutable Instruments Shruthi-1 CEM3379 Hybrid Synthesizer w/ Analog Filter

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Shruthi-1 is a powerful hybrid monophonic DIY Synthesizer designed by French synth guru Olivier Gillet. It uses digital wavetable oscillators and an analog filter.

The unit up for auction here uses the rare CEM3379 filter board based on a vintage Curtis CEM3379 filter chip, which was also used in the Sequential Circuits Prophet 2000 and the Ensonic ESQ1 and SQ-80. Due to the rarity of these chips, this filter board has been discontinued for quite a while.

Some basic specs:
2x digital oscillators with lots of different wave forms/oscillator models and cross modulation types (among them VCO sync, ring modulation, XOR-modulation)
digital sub oscillator, noise, attack generator (click, blow, ...)
CEM3379 24dB/Oct lowpass filter
2x LFO
2x ADSR envelopes
12x modulation matrix
arpeggiator
Modulation step sequencer
Audio input and output
MIDI in and out

For more info, sound demos, and the manual visit:
http://mutable-instruments.net/shruthi1

The unit on offer here was carefully built and calibrated and is fully working. It comes with the latest firmware version 0.97 installed. There are some traces of use on the acrylic enclosure (some light scratches), but all in all it is in pretty good cosmetic condition..."

Midibox Sammich SID MOS 8580 Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Up for auction is a ready-to-use Sammich SID DIY synthesizer based on the legendary MOS SID (Sound Interface Design) sound chip of the Commodore C64. This is a powerful synth which doesn't only do the usual 8bit chiptune bleeps, but can also produce some pretty fat leads and basses.

For more info on the Sammich SID project visit:
http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=sammichsid

The unit on offer here was carefully built from one of Wilba's original kits and comes complete with two original MOS8580 SID chips installed. To my ears at least, the 8580 with its improved filter is better suited for use in a synthesizer than the 6581. But of course, you could also install a pair of 6581, if you prefer those.

This unit is fully working and in decent cosmetic condition. The only major cosmetic blemish is on the back panel (see second picture), where you can see some smeared white paint from a semi-successful attempt to fill in the engraved inscription with a white permament marker. Not very pretty, alghough it doesn't affect the unit's functionality. To make up for it, I'm including a EU power supply in this auction. :) "

"Up for sale is a (1) rare EKO Minstrel organ, made in 1968. It's the version with the yellow case, I've never seen one in this color before. The sound is very vintage, cheesy. It's in good working condition, notice that some drawbars and knobs are crackling a bit when you turn them. Optical it's in used condition with some wear and tear and some scratches on it. Overall it looks good for its age (see photo's).

There are some mods on it: a jack-output at the bottom to connect it with a mixer, two jack-outputs at the back (I don't know their function) and a knob at the left side of the keyboard (I don't know its function either). It comes with its original legs and the lid of the case. It's a 220V version and the serial number is: 0256."

My first video for the PLG150-AN board, the small brother (or sister?) of the legendary AN1x. With Multisaw. The sounds I made for this board are not very complex, but very useful. Mostly plucks and basses it is. And a few lead sounds. The sound set also contains a few sounds from my AN1x set.
My PLG150-AN is hosted by the Yamaha S80, which delivers all effects you're hearing. Not external sound processing was done.

All songs are written as captions in the video. Non-captioned songs are pure improvisation to sound similar to some song.

JayB and his Waldorf Rocket (Sound demo)

Published on Dec 1, 2013 JayB·67 videos

"Heh, I've got a new toy. The Waldorf Rocket is a little hybrid synth with one digital oscillator (with up to 8 voices) and and an analog 12 dB Waldorf filter.
In contrast to many other demos you see this demo shows the Waldorf in a more musical environment, less focusing on technical aspects. Thus the sound of the Rocket isn't clean.
Yes, the audio is a bit delayed toward the end of the video. And yes, the auto focus of my phone's camera likes my hand. :P

The demo is divided into three parts:
- bass line
- polyphone chord synth Deadmau5 style
- live improvisation with the Rocket's internal arpeggiator (no MIDI sync)

The complete FX chain includes:
- Logic's Channel EQ (light bass and treble gain)
- Blue Chan Free Chorus (starting at 3:12)
- Logic's Stereo Delay (starting at 3:12)
- Logic's Platinum Reverb
- Logic's Compressor (for sidechaining)

Additional sound sources:
- Logic's EXS24 for the kick
- Quasimidi Sirius (hihat)
- Roland V-Synth XT (additional bass while polyphone mode demonstration)
