GAMEBOY / MOOG / JUNO / SPACE ECHO / STRAT

Published on Jul 9, 2014 EXPLORING AUDIO

One more video below.

"This video was an attempt to use as wide a variety of electronic instruments as I possible could, ranging from classics like the Juno 106 and the Roland Space Echo to some newer toys like the Moogerfooger Cluster Flux and the TC Electronics Flashback X4.

The main track was written using Propellerheads Reason. The main drum samples came from a sample pack of Nanoloop drum sounds made by An0va ( https://www.facebook.com/an0va ). After that, I brought the file into Ableton Live where I recorded the instruments you see in the overhead shot that starts at 39 seconds.

The Gameboy is synced to Ableton using an Arduinoboy ( https://code.google.com/p/arduinoboy/ ) and is running LSDJ ( http://www.littlesounddj.com/lsd/ ). During the "verses", the Gameboy plays two tracks of arpeggiated chords and doubles the main melody during the end of the song. The Novation Launch Control is controlling several effects in Ableton but 90% is just allowing me to control what is being sent to the Cluster Flux and the Flashback at different points of the song. I also used Animoog on my iPad to play the ambient higher synth parts during the ending of the song.

The next shot I recorded was the Juno 106 going through the Roland Space Echo. Unfortunately, the self oscillations of the tape echo didn't come through very loudly in the final mix of the song. I plan to dedicated an entire video to the Space Echo soon!

Finally, I recorded the guitar "solo" over the bridge section of the song. I'm playing a 2011 American Fender Stratocaster through a Fulltone OCD and into a Twin Reverb ( with a light amount of amp reverb). Even though I'm only using the one pedal, I still wanted to include a completely gratuitous shot of my pedal board. Also, I tuned my guitar to an open F chord so all of my pull-offs would stay in the key of the song!

Finally, I recorded the entire finished mix of the song out on to an Akai X-150D reel to reel tape recorder. It was my intention to use this recording in the final edit of the video but there were some weird phasing issues that I couldn't resolve and so I went back to the original mix of the song.

I've posted this song on the Exploring Audio Bandcamp page as a "Pay What You Want" download with no minimum. Download it for free if you'd like but any donation is very appreciated and will help me make future videos! I've also included several different mixes of the song, including the version from the reel to reel, one where every track was recorded with the Juno 106, and finally one recorded through the Roland Sound Canvas, a midi module that makes everything sound awesome. Check that out here - http://exploringaudio1999.bandcamp.com/

GAMEBOY / MONOTRIBE / KAOSS PAD cover of "THE SCORE" by AMINAL

Published on May 1, 2014

"I just got the Monotribe and Kaoss Pad yesterday and immediately wanted to sync the Monotribe to my LSDJ on my Gameboy. I decided to put together an extremely rushed cover of "The Score" by Aminal ( a band I've just recently started playing with ) and run everything into Ableton Live, with a few extra effects added on top ( bitcrusher, reverb, some delay ). Then I added a Gilmore Girls sample ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZJMN... ) and recorded everything to video.

MFOS Seven Segment Linear Envelope Generator

Published on Jul 10, 2014 Ray Wilson

"The MFOS Seven Segment Linear Envelope Generator provides from 2 to 7 linear segments you use to design a voltage envelope to control analog synth modules. The slope and threshold for each segment is settable. This took a couple of months to develop and I despaired that it might never be viable but with a little bit of persistence and inspiration - ka-bam here it is. This is an advanced project and you will need electronic test equipment and trouble shooting skills to successfully build one. The schematics and complete description of the project are here:

http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/in...

Some features of the project are:

•Selectable Two to Seven Linear Envelope Segments
•Positive and Negative Slopes
•Triggered Mode Supports Sustain Segments
•Gate Mode 1: Complete Envelope on Gate Release.
•Gate Mode 2: Reset Envelope on Gate Release.
•Level and Polarity Output Control
•Two millisecond to several minutes long segment times.
•Slope runaway detect and reset.
•Envelope Repeat
•Manual Gate
•LEDs Identify Active Segment

Massive PAIA Modular Synthesizer

via MATRIXSYNTH CLASSIFIEDS

"LOCAL PICK-UP IN PORTLAND, OR PREFERRED.

Shipping is not recommended. Too fragile.

i am selling my ancient custom built PAIA modular (all 70's/80's) named herbert. herbert is a real deal science fiction affair. ..a must have for any lab. the modules on this are extremely well built.. no rat's nest... or amateur solder hour. i recently had the power supply rebuilt/reworked by portland custom shop (here in sunny portland, or). my plan has been to restore this thing but life has been pulling me in other directions so she is up for grabs. all of this said, it needs some work... It is structurally quite fragile, has some cosmetic blemishes (although that is a huge part of the charm) and a couple of the modules do not fire up.

MAIN UNIT:
6 VCOS
2 VCFS
2 VCAS
a low freq osc
2 envelope generators
a patchable slider panel
1 bandpass filter
power supply panel w/ patch panel
1 envelope follower
1 inverter buffer
1 ring mod
a 4 channel mixer
an unused power supply panel
seq w/ transposer
keyboard w/ trigger, out, glide, pitch

EXPANSION BOX:
3 VCOS (different model than the others)
2 function generators
1 bandpass filter (unfinished)
1 sine/pwm
1 rad variable trigger

it has not seen much use in my possession and I have not tested every single function or panel.... I've used it for the sequencer, multiple oscillators, ring mod and one of the filters. the sequencer is GREAT!! like i said, the build is fragile.... i am not a modular dude so there are some things i do not know how to test... but regardless let me know if you'd like to check it out some time. While she is a fixer upper I feel like the price is not bad considering it's age, peculiarity and it's BUILT BY F'N HAND aspect. yow!

Native Instruments introduces CIRCUIT HALO Expansion for MASCHINE

"Berlin, July 10, 2014 – Native Instruments today released CIRCUIT HALO – a new MASCHINE Expansion that combines intricately-sampled vintage synths and drum machines with contemporary patterns. CIRCUIT HALO’s sound set combines multi-sampled synths, classic drum machines, custom glitch modulation effects, and new presets for the included MASSIVE and REAKTOR PRISM synths. CIRCUIT HALO is available now at the NI Online Shop and runs exclusively in the MASCHINE 2 software on MASCHINE STUDIO, MASCHINE, or MASCHINE MIKRO. A compact version for iMASCHINE is also available via the in-app store.

CIRCUIT HALO features a premium collection of samples from vintage synthesizers such as the Roland Juno 60, Casio VL-Tone, Prophet 5, Yamaha DX7, Sequential Circuits Pro One and Six-Trak, and a Korg MS-20. Each instrument was meticulously multi-sampled to capture the characteristic warm low end and idiosyncrasies such as pitch drift that analog equipment adds to productions. The combination of vintage sound with the latest in glitch modulation effects and arrangement styles gives producers a new way to blend classic sounds with production techniques.

The drum sounds in CIRCUIT HALO come from a mix of vintage and modern drum machines – many customized for a unique sound. Boutique outboard gear such as a classic 80s British talkback compressor and 1/2" analog tape were used for detailed tone shaping and a good dose of warmth and character. Lush reverb reminiscent of the 80s sound was also used to add depth and vintage flavor to the expansion.

CIRCUIT HALO’s four Special Kits contain a wealth of glitched-out, grainy sounds, noises and sweeps, sound effects, and percussion and stabs. All-new PRISM presets provide organic leads, pads, mallets, and flutes while MASSIVE presets deliver textured, morphing leads, basses, and stabs.

A condensed version of CIRCUIT HALO is also available as an iMASCHINE Expansion for creating beats on-the-go. The iMASCHINE Expansion features two projects, four drum kits, and two multi-sampled instruments. Tracks can be exported to MASCHINE STUDIO, MASCHINE, and MASCHINE MIKRO for completion.

CIRCUIT HALO was created in cooperation with Danish sound design expert Joël Krozer of 6 Bit Deep.

CIRCUIT HALO is available now at the NI Online Shop for $49 / 49 € / £44 / ¥ 4,800 / AU$ 79 and runs in the MASCHINE 2 software.

The iMASCHINE expansion is available at the iMASCHINE in-app store for $0.99 / 0,89 € / £0.69 / ¥ 100 / AU$ 0.99.

via this auction

via the seller: "I stop this project, I simply lack the time ............

I offer a DIY synthesizer modular system built after the buildinginstructions of Tünker from about 1980.

The system consists eg of 10 (!) VCO's, 3 multimode filters (5 modes) various LFO's and much more.

I bought it like it is and wanted to finish it, but I have no time for it.

The modules in picture 1 are fully assembled, but cannot say whether they work or not.

Some basic data:

classy front panels (aluminum with machined lettering)
TOP professional quality pcbs
Abuot 30 pcbs, partially partially equipped are added-
Complete manual with all the instructions and schematics and layouts
Power supplies are included

The late 70 early 80s there were quite a few DIY Modular projects, such as PAIA, Elektor Formant or Baumann. This is probably Tünker of 1980

I am selling it explicitly to hobbyists for restoration, repair, or parts recycling

Shipping is possible in Germany possible but will be expensive (3 packages + Iloxx for the cabinet).

Therefore I prefer pick up"

This is the first Tünker post on the site. Helmut Tünker was a German TV engineer who developed DIY synth modules and wrote a book on his designs.

via this auction

via the seller: "For your consideration, is a Prophet 5 Rev. 3.3 (with midi) polyphonic analog synth. This is considered the most reliable version of the Prophet 5, and the midi on this synth works flawlessly. I just recently had it serviced by Ed Miller, here in Los Angeles. He replaced the bushings, so it plays like new. He cleaned the inside, loaded up all of the patches, including the extras (which only come with the Rev. 3.3 version). So there are 120 loaded preset patches on this thing!!

This Prophet 5 comes with a custom anvil case, the original manual, the original cassette tape (and CD), as well as the power supply.

It's by no means in mint condition (there are some minor scratches on the knobs and the body of the keyboard), but this is to be expected from an instrument this old. That being said - there are no major cosmetic flaws either. It has been used only in my smoke-free studio since I've owned it for the last few years."

n0nx0x v2.10 - tick-based shuffle & shuffled-clock, slaving a Boss DR-220E via XSync

Published on Jul 10, 2014 h4x0riz3d

"n0nx0x2.10 can generate shuffled clock. All sync outputs are affected, all slaved machine would shuffle, even if they don't have built-in shuffle.

The DR-220E is slaved to the 'Low-density Clock' output (XSync) and becomes shuffled when using shuffled-clock
The same happens to devices slaved via MIDISync and DinSync.

At the end, you can see how i've connected the 'Low-density Clock' to J6, which then goes to the IO-Board and "CV" jack at the rear.

This is a lazy/temporary solution, i don't use the CV/Gate outputs thus i decided to use them for testing XSync because i don't feel like drilling holes on the rear panel at the moment."

First Look at the New Modulus Synthesizer Keyboard - Video, Press Release & Price

video upload by sonicstate

And the press release:

"Breakthrough modulus.002 takes British synth power polyphonically to world stage

BRISTOL, UK: breakthrough British electronic musical instruments manufacturer Modulus is proud to announce availability of modulus.002 — the first analogue/digital hybrid polysynth to have been designed, developed, and manufactured in the UK for four decades — as of July 10...

Even though the technology for mass-market synthesisers was patently pioneered in the UK in the leafy London suburb of Putney at the tail end of the Swinging Sixties, the last time that a polyphonic/multitimbral analogue synthesiser was designed, developed, and manufactured in the UK — actually within Wales — was way back in the late Eighties. It is with utmost pride, therefore, that Bristol-based Modulus has not only succeeded in bringing back that pioneering spirit to Blighty with the mighty modulus.002 but has admirably succeeded in doing so by creating an amazing modern-day musical instrument that truly represents one giant leap for ‘synthkind’ with a sizeable number of notable new features to its innovative name. No easy task in climatically cynical conditions during an era of increasingly shortened attention spans, synth-wise or otherwise. Been there, done that, bought the (Moog) T-shirt, some might cynically say!

Yet surely soothsaying is a better bet in this case? Why? Well, modulus.002 even sports some world firsts! So what makes modulus.002 tick, then, and what, exactly, is it that makes it so special in comparison to today’s commercial and ‘boutique’ offerings from other manufacturers, both bigger and smaller? Let’s look at some straightforward facts for starters...

As an analogue/digital hybrid keyboard synthesiser (using an aftertouch-enabled premium Fatar semi-weighted, five-octave key mechanism), modulus.002 provides 12 discrete voices of polyphony with full multitimbrality if so desired. As such, it features two NCOs (Numerically-Controlled Oscillators) per voice for exceedingly high resolution and stability with wide-reaching waveform selections, together with two sub-oscillators, individually (and uniquely) switchable from a traditional square wave to having the same waveform as the main NCO to effectively produce four oscillators per voice; a Modulus-designed 24dB/octave four- pole transistor ladder filter featuring some very unusual morphing or ‘polesweeping’ effects, enabling ear-opening transitions from 24dB/octave four-pole to 6dB/ octave one-pole filtering and anywhere in between; one LFO per voice as well as a global LFO; wide-ranging modulation options, all accessible directly via the front panel — no navigating convoluted and confusing menus; a pure analogue signal path from the oscillators right the way through to the combined XLR/TRS balanced/unbalanced outputs (with all 12 voices individually available for external processing via a dedicated D-Sub connector); two audio inputs enabling internal audio processing from the VCF onwards... and that’s only scratching the surface. Not literally, of course!

While all voice control parameters are accessible via a well-thought-through front panel that is both attractive and intuitive in use thanks to sticking to traditional synthesiser workflow, what lies beneath is really remarkable. Radically departing from the norm, modulus.002 is blessed with an unrivalled user interface based around a high-quality 4.3-inch screen with wide viewing angle. It is context sensitive, whereby the control parameter of any control knob touched by the user is immediately displayed onscreen. Synthesiser savants and audio aficionados will surely unite in their appreciation of the sonic depths that this well-specified speedy dream machine can deeply dive into!

Forget about an analogue renaissance here, however; let’s talk truly revolutionary design features for a moment. modulus.002 represents a unique approach to synthesiser design, taking traditional analogue circuitry combined with modern, reliable digital developments and marrying it all to a completely new control platform. Phenomenally, modulus.002 brings cloud functionality to a synthesiser for the first time! The Ethernet port means modulus.002 can be connected to a network to enable updates via the Internet — no more MIDI SysEx dumps to get you down in the dumps — and access to the modulus.cloud means user profile settings, sound patches, sequences, and other content can be easily replicated to a cloud-based server platform to enable rapid resynchronisation to another modulus.002, regardless of whether it is owned by the same user or a collaborator at a remote location. Let’s be honest here. We’re well into the 21st Century now, so why not provide modulus.002 users with data management features that are expected as the ‘norm’ in modern consumer technology devices, yet have hitherto eluded the electronic musician? Makes sound sense to the Modulus team, that’s for sure! And we’re sure it will make sound sense to modulus.002 users, too.

So what other notable modulus.002 features are worth making a song and dance about? An inbuilt MIDI-sync-able 16-track, 12-row, 32-step sequencer with 16 front panel-positioned step-time editing controls can give any hardware rivals already out there a serious run for their money. For sequences can not only be transposed dynamically while running but sophisticated so-called ‘mini arpeggiator sequences’ created using the arpeggiator’s Hold mode can be speedily saved as sequences for latter recall and editing using the sequencer. Moreover, modulus.002’s Animator allows any control to be sequenced, enabling complex filter transitions, waveform changes, and modulation matrix changes to be sequenced. Lest we forget, 12 ‘quick recall banks’ are accessible directly from dedicated front panel buttons. Build up set lists of presets, sequences, and animations, making modulus.002 a live performance partner par excellence.

Plain and simple? Far from it, it seems! So who better qualified, then, to explain the whys and wherefores of taking a truly thrilling synthesiser design from the drawing board to an equally enthralling production-ready product launch like this in under a year than company co-founder and principal designer Paul Maddox, a top-tier talent with proven production pedigree, best known within the synthesiser industry for his well-received MonoWave, a limited-run, 19-inch rack-mountable, MIDI- controllable monosynth inspired by Germany’s legendary PPG Wave series — arguably amongst the most coveted high-end synthesisers of the early Eighties — featuring two digital oscillators with 256 samples per waveshape and an analogue 24dB transistor ladder filter, as well as his more recently-released VacoLoco range of ‘pocket synth’ designs. Do tell. Why now? Why the big step up to the brave new world of modulus.002? Muses Maddox: “This came about because I’ve had a long-held dream to build a polysynth since I was knee high. I’ve nearly got there several times, but it was a golden opportunity in July last year when my business partner, Philip Taysom, and myself sat together and said, ‘Now is a good time to do it.’ Both Philip and myself are passionate about synthesisers, and we feel that the synthesiser market has been neglected for a long time in terms of high-end, pro — in quality and feel — instruments. I quite often equate this to a PRS guitar. There is nowhere in the synthesiser industry that I’m aware of where you can go and buy the equivalent of a PRS. That’s what we’re aiming at — top quality, top to bottom.”

So there you have it, folks. With top-quality components sourced and designed throughout its robust, road-ready construction coupled with upmarket design flourishes like leather-bound end cheeks — quite possibly another world first, modulus.002 is a fighting force to be musically reckoned with. British synth power is alive and kicking, and Modulus has just fired its impressive opening synth salvo that more than lives up to its Machines for Musicians tagline. It’s aim is true, so watch this space...

Update: Full specs & press pics:

modulus.002 provides twelve discrete voices of polyphony with full multi-timbrality if desired
Two oscillators per voice with two sub oscillators, which can be switched from being either traditional square wave to having the same waveform as the main oscillator – in effect making four oscillators per voice

Analogue / digital hybrid architecture uses NCOs for very high resolution, and very stable oscillators. Over 50 different waveforms, ranging from classic analogue sounds to more unique digital shapes
modulus designed 24db per octave four pole transistor ladder filter, with some very unusual morphing characteristics or ‘polesweeping’, enabling transition from four pole through bandpass to one pole 6db per octave, or anywhere in between

Two LFO’s, one per voice and one global

Extensive modulation options, all accessed directly from the front panel – no menu options!
modulus.002 features a range of sequencing options – a built in 16 Track, 12 row, 32 step sequencer with 16 dedicated step time editing knobs on the front panel and MIDI sync capabilities. Sequences can also be transposed dynamically while running

A very highly featured arpeggiator with a wide range of different modes, including modulus ‘hold’ mode, enabling arpeggiator-based sequences to be created

The modulus Animator, which enables any control parameter on the modulus.002 to be sequenced, enabling very complex filter transisitions, wave form changes and modulation matrix changes to be sequenced

Superb UI, a great departure from the norm of synthesisers, featuring a very high quality 4.3″ screen with wide viewing angle, display is context sensitive where the control parameters of any control knob that is touched by the user, is immediately displayed

Twelve ‘quick recall banks’ are accessible directly from the front panel, enabling performing musicians to get rid of their set sheets and build set lists of presets, sequences and animations, all quickly accessible from dedicated front panel buttons. Up to ten banks of quick recalls can be created, making live performance a doddle
VCF and VCA envelope generators

Four Key Modes – Poyphonic, Monophonic, Unison and Stack

Very high quality construction, uses a premium FATAR semi-weighted five octave key mechanism with aftertouch
All voice control parameters are accessible from a well designed and intuitive front panel, that follows a traditional synthesiser work flow

Pure analogue signal path with combined XLR/TRS sockets for balance / unbalanced outputs. Further, each of the twelve outputs can be brought out individually via a dedicated dsub socket

Two audio inputs enabling audio processing from the VCF onwards plus external MIDI in and out

XY joystick and Sustain and Expression pedal inputs for performance controls – any control parameter can be assigned to any joystick axis (X+, X-, Y+, Y-) by pressing the dedicated front panel selector button

Ethernet port to connect your modulus.002 to your network and enable updates via the internet (no more midi sysex dumps) and access to the Modulus cloud features
