Moog Sub 37 Step Sequencer Overview

Published on Oct 4, 2015 ProckGnosis

"Just a introduction to the Moog Sub 37 step sequencer running under OS 1.1, looking at the following things:
- Inputting note values for each step
- Inputting rests and ties
- Editing the sequence afterwards

Great little feature on the Sub 37 and fairly easy to use. A couple things I don't look at are how to change note values after the sequence is loaded and how to skip steps in the sequence on the fly.

Probably very similar to quite a few older style step sequencers, but as I say in the video, I've done VERY little step sequencing with synths. That being said, it sort of reminded me of the Casio XW-P1's sequencer/drum programmer and a couple of the sequencers in Propellerhead Reason.

Cheers!

My only minor complaint is it would be nice if the LCD displayed more information about the step (like relative note value)"

variant:cascade - 3D Touch generative audiovisual artwork for iPhone 6s

Published on Oct 4, 2015 Joshue Ott

"variant:cascade is a generative audiovisual artwork designed specifically for the 3D Touch sensor on the iPhone 6s, in which increased pressure on the phone’s screen intensifies and transforms the visual and musical experience."

Update: the app is now available on iTunes: variant:cascade - Interval Studios

"variant:cascade is an audiovisual artwork that creates beautiful, ever-changing music and imagery. The app combines user input and built-in randomness to create images and music that will continually change, grow and evolve, offering a new and different experience every time. For users of all ages, variant:cascade is a chance to explore and experience a unique work of generative art.

variant:cascade was specifically designed to take advantage of the 3D Touch sensor on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus: increased pressure on the phone’s screen will intensify and transform the visual and musical experience. To interact with variant:cascade, draw a line with your finger on the screen and the visuals will respond to your drawing.
Pressing more deeply on the 3D Touch screen will change the width and speed of the visuals as well as transform the music. (Users on devices without 3D Touch can vary how much of their finger touches the screen to trigger this effect.) You can use multiple fingers to interact with variant:cascade, and each will independently influence the visuals and music.

You can view the indeterminate audio engine by tapping the dot in the lower right. The display shows the different elements of the musical composition as they are loaded by the engine through a combination of chance and user input. The center button opens a menu of settings for the app, and the button to the right allows you to take screenshots of the visuals, automatically saving them to your photo library.

The Variant apps are a new series of generative audiovisual artworks from Interval Studios featuring visuals by Joshue Ott and music by Kenneth Kirschner. Each Variant features a unique visual composition by Ott based on his superDraw visual performance software, as well as a new indeterminate musical composition by Kirschner. Each Variant app also offers a different set of interactive controls for the user, ranging from the ability to subtly influence the development of the piece to total interactive control over both visuals and sound. All of the Variants are generative artworks: through a varying combination of built-in randomness and user input, each Variant will continually grow and evolve over time without ever directly repeating itself either visually or musically, offering the user an ever-changing, ever-evolving audiovisual experience."

Buchla Easel K tip

Published on Oct 4, 2015 Todd Barton

"Since the 223e module can store only one patch(1) I realized that you could actually store 4 different Radio Output Kinesthetic pad configurations. Of course, you would need to re-patch from one Radio Output section to the other but it is possible. You would also need to remember any 208 setting that might change.

Let’s look at this(2):

I’ve programmed Radio 6 for Arpeggiation on A-E and a little modal scale on L-Q.
The L-Q pads are sending Pressure to control Timbre. V pad controls the speed of the Arpeggiator.

Next I’ve programmed Radio 7 for pads U-Y with Location controlling Modulation.

I still have two more Radio outs that I could program but have not yet taken the time.

Here’s a very rough video demo:

(1) once you’ve found the patch you want to keep, press the Remote button, thus turning off the red l.e.d—it will be saved on powering down.\

(2) I don’t have an official Easel K but have hooked up my 223e to my Easel’s 218 which give the exact same results."

Buchla Easel K tip 2

Published on Oct 5, 2015 Todd Barton

"Using the 218’s Pulser to clock for the 218 Sequencer and the 223e Arpeggiator you can have 2 synchronized variable step/pitch combinations: 3-5 steps with the 218 and from 1-23 steps with the 223e. Also, the 223e offers many pattern modes: Rising, Falling, Triangle, Random and Spiral."

Novation Bass Station II
Roland Alpha Juno 1

Sequenced the synths with the Bass Station. Latch'd loops with the Launchpad and played some simple lead stuff on the Alpha Juno.

The loops are atmospheric ambient type stuff I made using iOS synth apps such as Magellan, Sunrizer, iSEM, Thor and Animoog loading them into the Launchpad iOS app and feeding them to Dedalus and AUFX:Dub. I use a Alesis Wedge to add effects to the synths.

"Absolutely pristine, MINT condition, except for professionally upgraded display and LEDs. I’ve looked for any cosmetic blemish at all, and I can’t find one. There are no scratches or dings in the chassis, all knobs and wheels are firm and smooth, and the keyboard is even and responsive. It's never been gigged, never been exposed to cigarette smoke or temperature extremes, and I keep it covered when not in use so it's never even been dusty. The only difference between this and a brand new one is that I upgraded to a blue OLED display that’s much easier to read, and the red LEDs were replaced by (brightness-adjusted) white ones. It’s beautiful!

This is more than just another virtual analog, it's an incredible synthesizer. It can do fat, round, squelchy analog sounds, or its wavetables and FM can give it a glassy, harsh, or piercing digital edge. It's like having a 25-voice PPG and Oberheim SEM all rolled into one. I'm really going to miss it.

The list of features is too long to type it all out, but here are the highlights. Three oscillators plus two tunable suboscillators per voice with all the traditional waveforms plus two 128-wave wavetables that blend incredibly smoothly between waveshapes. Three LFOs with lots of advanced options. Ringmod, sync, FM on all the oscillators, plus each oscillator can go separately to each filter in varying amounts. Two 12db or 24db filters per voice, with the following types: lowpass, bandpass, highpass, notch, PPG emulation, comb+, and comb-. Filters can be serial or parallel. Two separate effects engines and 4 multitimbral parts keep their effects in combinations. Programmable arpeggiator, a real modulation matrix, digital output, responds to velocity and pressure, etc. The knobs are the famous Waldorf endless encoders, so there's never an unmusical jump in the sound when you turn one. It's a joy to play."

Arp Axxe Vintage Analogue Beast Mono Synth

"Like the little brother to the famous odyssey series, the axxe uses much of the same circuitry for a similar sounding synth. It is a huge sounding little machine, with ripping oscillators and that classic warm arp filter sound. Heaps of hands on action make for endless fun on this vintage beast. These are pretty rare in Australia, you don't see them come up very often, so don't miss your opportunity to grab one!

This particular axxe has had a full service and is sounding great. Each slider has been fully stripped and rebuilt to give them a smooth feel again, so no more annoying sticky crackly sliders. Cosmetically the unit is good, however does have some signs of wear & tear relevant to age. The front panel and paintwork are mostly very good, but there are a few scratches on the back panel, and one corner of the wooden side has been chipped off. With some TLC these could be easily fixed up. Please see photos for detail, and please note these do not affect functionality in any way."
