Dave Smith Instruments Prophet '08: Forte Piano

Published on Aug 21, 2016 Sacred Synthesis

"I wrote this little piece specifically to demonstrate the forte piano patch.

Only one comment on the sound. There is obviously a fair amount of reverb added to the forte piano patch, but there is also a delay effect. However, the delay is not an offboard effect, but from the Prophet '08's filter envelope. This creates an echoed plucking quality that is very acoustic sounding. It's absolutely key to this patch.

I really like this sound. It has beautiful nuances to it, depending on the keyboard register and the filter cut off frequency setting, which is adjusted by the modulation wheel. I expect to be using it quite a bit in the future. And it may be a rarely appreciated fact, but early forte pianos had only a five-octave keyboard, just like the Prophet '08. So there's plenty of music to be made on this instrument, and no room for excuses that the keyboard is too short.

The wind is produced by the second P'08 Keyboard. The whooshing was created by two LFOs modulating the filter at different rates - one with resonance and the other without it - and the volume of the wind was adjusted while I played by a foot pedal. It creeps back in here and there in the middle of the piece.

Instrumentation:
Prophet '08 Keyboard (2)
Prophet '08 Module

Effects:
Reverb from Lexicon MX300

Recorded live and directly to CD.

"100% analog mono synth! Made by Roland. Special Edition model black/green to match the Aira Series. Limited run, no longer in production.

Manufacturer Description:
VCO 1 has controls for frequency, level and modulation depth. HIGH/LOW switches between octaves. Frequency range: 0.2Hz-10kHz
The WAVE switch selects in a rotating fashion one of the wave forms: sawtooth -> triangle -> 50% pulse -> 75% pulse -> 25% pulse -> white noise -> pink noise
EG/FM selects either the envleope generator or the second VCO as modulation source.

VCO 2 is pretty much the same as VCO1 but has only two selectable waveforms (sawtooth and 50% square) and different modulation options (sync or FM by VCO1). The CV LINK switch routes the external CV for VCO1 to input of VCO2 as well.

The filter is a resonant, 24db/octave steep low pass filter. The resonance goes into oscillation. The modulation source for the cutoff can be either the envelope or an external CV; the modulation intensity is adjustable. Two more switches determine if and which VCO is used for filter cutoff modulation.

The envelope is working either as an AD or an ASR, the middle control D/S determines either the decay time or the sustain level. When envelopes overlap, an interesting percussion effect occurs which prevails in the mix.
The INV/NOR switch can invert the envelope. The modulation depth to the VCA is set with the "EG depth" potentiometer.

HOLD opens the VCA and the VOL control sets the output level. The output switch is used for muting the synth.
The white button allows you to fire the envelope manually and it generates a gate signal at the gate output socket."

Patch Notes #15 - 0-Coast Noise Explorations

Published on Aug 21, 2016 Voltage Control Lab

"Patch Notes #15 examines using the stepped random voltage source on the Make Noise 0-Coast as a noise generator, along with other Eurorack based accompaniment.

The Korg SQ1 sync output is routed to the Tempi input to clock everything else. The channel A CV and Gate are routed to the 0-Coast pitch and gate inputs, channel b CV is routed to control the decay input on the Contour section.

The cycling Slope section output is routed to the Tempo input, and the stepped random output is routed to the Voltage Math section input. The Contour output is routed to the Voltage Math input 2, attached to the attenuverter. One of the VM outputs is routed to the Balance section audio input, the other is routed to the Multiply CV input. Channel A from the Ornament & Crime in Quadraturia mode is routed into the Overtone input. The output is from the 0-Coast is routed to the Malekko Mix4, then on to the Mutable Warps (running Parasite firmware in pingpong delay mode).

Tempi is clocking and resetting the Malekko Varigate 4, which has an 8 step, heavily randomized pattern triggering the Noise Engineering Basilimus Iteritas. Tempi is also clocking the Make Noise Brains with Pressure Points (one channel of which is modulating the pitch on the BI) and the Wogglebug (the stepped, smooth and bouncing outputs are routed to the decay time, morph and fold functions on the BI). The Malekko Anti-Oscillator is in LFO mode, routing the mayhem output to the harm input on the BI, while the cycling Malekko Envelator is modulating the spread. The BI is then routed out to the Mix4.

Finally, Tempi is also clocking René, which is playing a slow 3 step pattern on the DPO. The Final output is routed to the MMG, then the Optomix and back to the Mix4. René X-Gate output is routed to the Intellijel Dual ADSR, one channel opening the Optomix, the other modulating the MMG filter cutoff.

"The SH-7 is a rare and great sounding duo-phonic analog synth from the late 70’s. It has that great classic look, sound and feel of the early Roland products.

A very flexible vintage synthesizer which allows each user to creatively modulate and tweak the sounds. Mixer allows colouring of each sounds which also can be used to distort sounds. This amazing piece of unit is the perfect key to techno sounds and effects.

The biggest SH series non modular synth. A mixture of a bit SH5 and System 100 but still different. 2 real ADSR Envs, filter FM and a weak but strange sync sound. Duophonic but not 2 voices, so VCO1 and VCO2 can be controlled by the keyboard.
Has an extra sample and hold. one LFO can trigger ENV(s). Has external input, fast Envelopes and nice resonance with the help of filter FM by OSC2 or noise mod. There is a special mixer in VCO1 (a) ranging from 32' to 2' like the SH-3A and lets you mix square waves of each octave range (plus the VCO1 selected wave called VCO (b) )

The SH7 is the flag ship of the SH Series. Both Envelopes can be triggered by LFO, keyboard or both, the VCF can be modulated by 5 sources switchable to another alternative, so it's 10 but not at the same time: env1 (positive and negative polarity), LFO, or S/H, keytrack or pedal, VCO2 or Noise, Envelope follower (positive, negative polarity)"

"So I noticed there weren't that many videos/tunes of Nanoloop on Youtube, so I decided to make one. This is a tune I made on Nanoloop 1.2 on a prosound modded Gameboy Color.

Nanoloop is a sequencer and synth for Gameboy. I'd say version 1.2 is not as advanced as the more famous LSDJ but you can use it to make some crazy noisy, crunchy techno sounds and beats."

Published on Aug 21, 2016 Sequentonal

"Another Berlin School Sequence Trip, albeit an old Theme. This seems to be my default when I am out of ideas :)
This one is really more about me trying what sounds I can produce :)

The JDxi is taking care of the Bass Sequence for a change, and imho it seems to be doing it cleaner than the Brute, so I might stick with that for the future.
Another first, No Stereo Delay! :) Instead the MX200 is being used in Dual Channel mode, Mono Delay on one channel and Pitch -12 on the other.

I like what came out of this 8 a.m.-before-bed session. Now i need a new theme to utilise it all :)'
