"Ich bereite gerade eine deutschsprachige Modularsynthesizer Workshop Reihe vor, um Interessenten den Einstieg in die modularen Klangwelten zu erleichtern. In dem Workshop steht der Sound und wie man ihn erzeugt im Vordergrund. Die Theorie wird dabei auf das notwendigste beschränkt. Der Schwerpunkt wird nach einer Einführung schon der Bereich der Klänge sein, bei dem modulare Systeme ihre Vorteile ausspielen können."

Boards of M83 (Mutable Instruments Ambika One-Take Multi-Patch + drums)

Published on May 18, 2017 Lost For Words

"I've got a new toy! :D

Sebastian at diysynth.me lovingly built my Ambika last week with custom peek-a-boo clear front panel.

I have to say I have NEVER jelled with a new synth like I have with this Ambika. It's great fun, the menu is simple and the sound is amazing and I'm not saying that lightly. I've only had it a few days and just scratching the surface but the modulation matrix and individual voice parameters just bring every patch alive. It's got a similar "living" sound feel that my AN1x has. The Ambika is a hybrid digital/analogue synth.

I thought I'd make a Multi and a quick melody - I've used 4 voices for the first patch and one each for the other two patches. All played together in one take, with drums from the Revolution plugin and just a touch of reverb on the Ambika."

Rhythms and Melodies from the Special Stage Systems Oscillographic Block Module

"Special Stage Systems has taken the SN76489AN chip that was the sound chip in many 80's video game machines and built a synthesizer voice around it with function generators, CV controls and presets. The Oscilliographic Block can create great 8-bit drum sounds and melody lines. It has two square wave voices and a noise voice with white and periodic noise types. There are 6 programmable function generators that can produce smooth or stepped waveforms. These function generators can be used like modulators, LFOs, envelopes or sequencers. 4 CV inputs can control pitch, amplitude and the speed of the function generators. The clock that runs the SN chip can even be adjusted to over or underclock for different pitch ranges. There is a 1V/octave scaling for playing the sounds in tune as well.

Vintage Synth Lab AWM-3 Analog Wavefold Mixer

"Exploring drones and feedback with the AWM3. By routing the 1+2 mix out to channel 2's input and 2+3 out to channel 3's input, the Make Noise STO's sine output is mangled into a multi-stage feedback loop of growls, whistles, crackles, and sizzling textural material. Animated by the Mannequins Just Friends's six outputs, each stage of wavefolding is manipulated slightly out of time, creating an evolving drone that never quite repeats. The VSL AWM3 isn't just a mixer, isn't just a wavefolder: it's a machine for creating knotted, gnarly textures, sputters, distortion, and more.

The AWM-3 by Vintage Synth Lab is a complex wave-shaping, 3-channel analog mixer module that allows for precision control over compression and waveshaping per channel. The ability to output various mixes concurrently via the mixer's multiple outputs can result in a diverse palette of complex chorus-like timbres. In addition to offering individual control per input, each channel can also be connected in series to create double and triple wave-folded signals. Each channel's front-end compressor can also be used for both waveshaping and routing asymmetrical wave-shaped signals through cascaded wave-fold stages.

Unique for iPad - Review - Part #1 - Audio Examples

Published on May 18, 2017 Midiverse - TV

"What's up everybody? Welcome to Midiverse - TV. Today we're going to be checking out a new iOS application from Sugar Bytes, Unique for iPad."

iTunes: Unique for iPad - Sugar Bytes GmbH

There's also an iPhone version: Unique for iPhone - Sugar Bytes GmbH

"Unique was made for fun and vibes: Analogue sound, intense modulation and a killer set of features, delivering an amazing sonic spectrum that’s full of character: Classy sounds, powerful, warm… sometimes gritty.

Each of the 2 oscillators offers a selection of 5 waveforms: sawtooth and pulse waves are here, along with noise, triple saw and triple FM waves. There's also an additional sub-oscillator strapped into the master section for added oomph.

The internal controllers will bring in the dynamics: an LFO and an envelope, there's a recordable XY field & a sequencer. Use these to modulate any knob – a simple long tap will do.

The sound springs to life when it hits the filter section. Needless to say, analogue high-pass, low-pass and band-pass varieties are in place, along with a comb filter.

Standards aside, the actual intention behind this project, the Vowel Filter, also became its outstanding feature: string together two or four vowel formants and play them back in a multitude of ways.

Once you’ve built your sound, there’s tons of sound polish in two chained multi-effect units.

Features

• Sawtooth, Triple Saw, Pulse, Triple FM, Noise with tonal Filter, Sub Sine
• 5 Filters with 5 Modulators each
• Duophone Arpeggiator
• Vowel Filter
• Two Effect Sections
• Ableton Link Kit & AudioBus
• MIDI Learn & Host Automation
• 300 groovy presets by various artists"

WMD Test Lab Performance - William Mathewson

"William, the founder and lead designer at WMD hardly finds time in his busy schedule to make music anymore. However, to celebrate the release of the Arpitecht, our newest module, he put a patch together showing off what he had in mind when designing the module.

The result was an awesome, lo-fi vibe paired with a half-time, hip hop style beat that brought every one in the shop out to the front room to see what was going on. We had a blast filming this performance and hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it."

Dave Smith Instruments Begins Shipping Prophet Rev2 16-Voice Analog Poly Synth

The Rev 2 officially ships!

"Prophet ’08 Successor Boasts Expanded Polyphony, Digital Effects, Waveshaping Capabilities

San Francisco, CA—May 18, 2017—Dave Smith Instruments today began shipping the Prophet Rev2, a new 16-voice analog synthesizer designed to be a successor to their popular Prophet ’08 poly synth. Like its predecessor, the Prophet Rev2 features two DCOs per voice, and Curtis filters at the heart of its sound engine, but boasts a number of significant enhancements designed to make it more powerful.

Said Dave Smith: “The Prophet Rev2 came out of our desire to enhance and improve everything we could about the original Prophet ’08 and, in many cases, double its power. The fact that we were able to deliver such a boutique-quality instrument at a price that’s affordable to working musicians is a testament to how aggressively we took up the challenge.”

The most obvious difference between the Prophet Rev2 and its predecessor is polyphony. The Prophet Rev2 has 16 voices as its standard configuration — twice the polyphony of the Prophet ’08. (An 8-voice option is also available, as is a voice expansion card for 8-voice users wishing to upgrade to 16 voices at a later date.) Since the synth features bi-timbral operation, two completely independent sounds can be stacked or split (layered together or assigned to two different zones on the keyboard).

Additional features include waveshape modulation, a sub oscillator per voice, digital effects, a modulation matrix twice as extensive as its predecessor, a polyphonic step sequencer that allows up to 64 steps and up to 6 notes per step, a gated sequencer that provides 4 different 16-step sequences for complex modulation, and an arpeggiator. Other improvments include a premium-quality, five-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch, an integrated power supply, USB support, and a crisp OLED display.

Said Smith: “Creating the Prophet Rev2 was a very satisfying experience. It allowed us to take a modern classic and make it even better. The range and quality of sounds that the Prophet Rev2 can produce are extraordinary.”

The 16-voice Prophet Rev2 is available now with a US MAP of $1999. US MAP for the 8-voice version is $1499. US MAP for an 8-voice expansion card is $599.

Pioneer DJ AS-1 - hands-on

Published on May 18, 2017 Future Music Magazine

"Simon Arblaster and Si Truss demo and discuss the latest edition to Pioneer DJ’s collaboration with Dave Smith Instruments, the Toraiz AS-1.

Following on from last year’s release of the Toraiz SP-16, we knew that there would be more to come from the fledgling music production range.

Fast forward to the NAMM 2017 show and the launch of the AS-1, a monosynth with a single voice from the DSI Prophet 6 lying within, encapsulated in a more ‘DJ-friendly’ chassis.

While we were very pleased with the sounds on offer, we weren’t too sure about the choice of controls and keypad deployed. So then, what better reason to take a closer look AS-1 to see what else lurks under the hood."

Electronic Dream Plant WASP

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Here’s an Electronic Dream Plant WASP monophonic analog synth. 2 VCOs, VCF, LFO, etc. etc. you know the specs.

It has been owned by Electrical Audio, for many years. Legend has it that this synth was sold to our studio owner Steve Albini by the band Broadcast when they were on tour many years ago. Steve may be misremembering, though.

This specific WASP has been modified significantly:

The body was reinforced with a metal plate, which you can see in the pictures. One of the corners is cracked.

The power jack was replaced with one that allows it to be powered by the more standard 9V Boss-type connector (center negative).

This one was recently worked on by our studio tech. He replaced the line out jack, which restored headphone and internal speaker function. Also worked on some of the switches, which are much more consistent now.

Missing a few knob covers.

The “tune” pot is missing its shaft and cover, as you can see in the pics.

The “keyboard sensitivity” pot is obscured by said metal plate, but can be adjusted with a small flathead screwdriver.

This is an old, well-loved WASP, and as such, it has some scratchy pots, temperamental switches, etc., so please set your expectations accordingly. Still, this is an absolute joy to play."

Ensoniq EPS16+ & ASR 10 ENV3 Envelope Velocity ADSR Curves Made Simple

Published on May 18, 2017 The Daydream Sound

"The Ensoniq EPS Classic, EPS 16+ and ASR10 have so much functionality. In this video we look at disabling the Soft Velocity Cure in order to get closer to a traditional Attack, Sustain, Decay, Release (ADSR) Envelope curve. We’ll also find a way to introduce amplitude velocity back into the mix.

Watch more EPS 16+ videos here: [embed below]

Here’s how you do it!

1. Select the instrument you want to use.

2. Press EDIT and ENV 3

3. Navigate with the arrow buttons until you get to “SOFT VEL CURVE”

4. Turn this feature to the OFF position. This will disable the SOFT VELOCIT CURVE.

5. Now you can use the HARD VEL CURVE to shape your sound.

6. We need to reintroduce the velocity option as a feature.

7. Press EDIT and AMP and scroll to the Volume Modulation section

8. Set the Volume to 99 and the modulator to VEL, VEL 1 or VEL 2 depending on your preference.

9. You now have dynamic control over your sound depending on how hard you hit the keys.

10. That’s it your done!"

A couple of weeks into modular, and just recieved the braids and ripples from MI I wanted to take the modular on a bass jam :D Haha, it's bassy and noisy alright

This modular stuff is fun! :D even though a vanilla patch it sounds massive.. with some simple modulation using the slope in the 0-coast controlling the filter and also some logoi modulating the timbre in the braids. The Monologue and vBASS is supporting with some saturation/drive going on in the KORG monologue + cranking things up a bit into the TR8 external inputs.. just about on the limit.. vKEYS and vFM doing some melodies, the vFM is connected through the audio in on the Monologue so it gets a fair bit of saturation too.

Gear used, intellijel 7U with MI braids / ripples + 0-coast, volca bass, volca keys, volca fm and KORG monologue, beatstep pro, earthquaker devices transmisser + space spiral, keeley engineering caverns, TR-8, KP3+, microgranny 2.4
