"Neuron" - Free VST based on Hartmann Neuron

Published on Jul 15, 2017 100 Things I Do

"The Hartmann Neuron is one of those synths that intrigues and seems full off possibilities. Somewhere between Sampler, modeller and resynthesis engine built for a short time in the early 2000’s

This is the VST based on Axel Hartmann and Stephan Bernsee’s creation that was also also for sale for a short time before the company folded. It came with a controller (Nuke) which also acted as copy protection. Fortunately Stephan Bernsee has updated the code as much as possible to make the Neuron no longer tied to the controller and it now is available for free via his website and the Neuron facebook group.

The VST is built around the older VST 2.1 SDK which means the code is not compatible with most DAW’s today. You will need an Intel Mac running a VST Host that supports the older system. A full list of supported clients & links to downloads are available at http://www.neuron-synth.com/

Unfortunately the windows code base has been lost and is no longer able to be updated.

The Clip was composed 100% on the VST and no effects besides some compression was used."

"This vintage classic synthesizer from the 1970s has recently been serviced and all knobs and faders work well and it sounds as it should. Cosmetically the Roland looks good, considering its age. See photos. Closing down my studio in LA.

Model 102 is a keyboard less version of a synthesizer. Model 104 is the analog step sequencer. Both combine to make a complete system. Listen to it on YouTube [above]"

Roland VT 3 Issue

Published on Jul 15, 2017 mCKENIC

"Anyone have any experience with this? Its like the Roland VT-3 'forgets' its positions/presets.
Effect Wet/Dry has no effect and this happens intermittently when I move any control but this example is the Reverb control. When I turn off Reverb, preset 3 'forgets' and acts like it is Bypassed. Selecting preset 3 again takes a number of presses for it to 'catch' and hold.
Baffled!"

"OBERHEIM OB-Xa Analog Synthesizer Bought in the early Eighties by the same original buyer and the only owner. It was mainly used in a recording studio for some years and then put aside, stored in an air conditioned environment in it's original case and preserved in an excellent condition. It was recently tested. It fired up, It loaded the sounds, It Auto-Tuned. It may need calibrating (Tuning), but nevertheless all of it's parts are still the original factory parts, fully functioning, nothing in it has been touched, replaced or repaired except for the memory battery. Included are the original "OB-Xa Factory Patches Volume 1" on a cassette along with the original 'Programmed Patches' and "Owner's Manual" books."

Side note: if this one does need servicing, I can highly recommend http://synthchaser.com.

Waldorf Microwave XTk

"The Microwave XTk is the keyboard version of the powerful Microwave XT. It's a great big orange polyphonic performance synthesizer with 49 full sized velocity sensitive keys. There are 44 rotaries of knob-laden heaven and lots of control. All of the knobs transmit MIDI information as well! It's perfect for performance and studio work.

The Microwave XTk can easily emulate the sounds of the PPG wavetable synths as well as create squelchy acid-303 lines or boomy Moog bass.

Other great functions include a programmable arpeggiator, 4 integrated digital effects and stereo audio inputs. A sinus shaper 12dB low pass filter, a wave shaper 12dB low pass filter, sample & hold with a 12dB low pass filter, dual parallel filters with 12dB low pass and 12dB band pass, a 12dB low pass filter with filter FM (cutoff modulation through oscillator 2). Top that off with 8 part multitimbrality, 256 sounds and 128 multi-patches for one mega-powerful performance synthesizer perfect in any live or studio application where fat analog sounds are needed!"

3 Modules #15: Maths, Braids, Clouds

Published on Jul 15, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"Here are some more pleasant sounds to follow up on the idea I originally had for the previous episode: sending the SUM output from Maths into the internal quantizer on Braids, to create an evolving stepped sequence.

Patch notes:

Braids is in 3 x Sine wave mode, and the internal AD envelope is applied to the VCA, to create separated notes whenever the pitch changes. The quantizer is set to pentatonic minor. Towards the end you'll see that I'm reducing the bit depth and sample rate as well.

Maths' functions (ch. 1 and 4) are cycling slowly, and ch. 3 is patched into the cycle rate of both to serve as a "master tempo control". The sum output is sent to Braids' V/Oct input, which means that the ch. 1 and 4 attenuators set the range of notes, and ch. 2 offsets that range by a set amount.

Additionally Maths' other outputs are used to modulate Braids' timbre and color, and Clouds' position, size, blend (feedback, in this case), texture and freeze.

Clouds is in the standard granular delay mode, providing an ambient "bed of sound", to harmonize with the notes from Braids.

Thanks for watching!"

New NNZD Music Toys: MOSTRO FM Synth

Published on Jul 12, 2017 Blanali

A new synth from a new maker, Neonized aka NNZD. The following are the details, Google translated, from Neonized:

"In recent years we have seen a small number of FM synthesizers appear in the market, that form of synthesis that dominated the eighties and thanks to its exponent the already classic Yamaha DX7 was part of the dominant sound in this decade. Their strings, their pianos and bass lines, are already part of the collective memory and have been present from pop and rock to soundtracks.

But the FM always had something that made difficult its permanence in the electronic music, the difficulty in its programming, and the little intuitive of its interface, the complexity of its sounds has always been one of its attractions, but in what to program it refers Has always been something of a dark art, it was not until the appearance of VST versions like the classic FM8 from Native Instruments that we were able to penetrate into their guts and exploit their possibilities.

With the appearance of some FM in recent years, such as the Korg Volca FM and the Yamaha Reface DX, some of these parameters have become more accessible, especially for the musician or composer who seeks to modulate the sound in an intuitive way As it does in the usual subtractive synthesizers, and above all in direct, in order to give a greater expressiveness to the instrument and also to music.

Synthesizer fm This is where the MOSTRO appears, made by OSS (Outer Space Sounds) a Start Up born in Barcelona, but with a "foot" in Medellin (Colombia), and that is currently in prototype, but is in the last Stage before launching into a Kickstarter to have a commercial production. This small FM has a polyphony of 4 voices, LFO, Sub Oscillator plus a Delay and an included Glide, and most important, control in potentiometers of these parameters, which gives the flexibility and expressiveness of a conventional noun synthesizer, Even within the unpredictability that is usually the FM synthesis. Its size makes it portable, and although it still depends on being connected to a power outlet, this does not prevent it from being desirable in a live Setup where it can be controlled or controlled from its MIDI connections.

I had the opportunity to explore his sound, basically in a couple of small improvisations, one of them sequencing it externally. In the videos that are at the end of this article you can hear a little sound and precisely the malleability of this thanks to its controls, and that immediately made me think about their possibilities in the context of the live. Possibilities that in the version that will be launched finally will be many more to include the possibility of loopear internally as well as 4 CV Inputs and 1 CV Gate In, which immediately includes it in a set of analog synthesizers or even by its format, within a Eurorack!"
