Paolo of SynthMania walks though his live setup at KnobCon 2018

You can check out SynthMania's performance in video four of the playlist here.

"On Friday 9/7/2018 I caught up with Paolo from Synth Mania at KnobCon 2018. He was asked by the Suit and Tie Guy (who organizes the KnobCon events) to perform this at this year's opening night! Paolo was very kind to take a few minutes and walk through his gear setup for the show!

For convenience while traveling Paolo brought a small rig that features a Korg MicroStation, a Novation Circuit and a Korg monologue, a TC-Helicon Mic Mechanic 2 and a Sure SM58 microphone all connected through a Yamaha MG06X mixer Don't let the size fool you, his set sounded HUGE and had many people dancing their butts off during the classic Techno that Paolo is very good at producing."

Knobcon: Polyfusion Modular Synthesizer Returning After 40 Years

Some fascinating history with early Moog Music covered in this one.

"Here's an interview with one of the creators of the classic Polyfusion 2000 modular system, Ron Folkman.

Folkman is working with partners Jim Soloman and Jammie Logan to reissue the original system, and to create a new line of updated modules. They were showing the 1979 Polyfusion 'monster' of Toto's Steve Porcaro, 'Darius'.

Synth master Matt Baxley, aka Moot Booxle

Stronger than an Ox sticker. This one was listed back in April.

"All sliders are smooth and straight.
It was fully serviced by Roland in 2002.
Completely tested and inspected under the hood last month by Heyday Music, Asheville.
It has spent the last 20 years in an air-conditioned studio with occasional use.

There is a marking/smudge of unknown origin to the right of the "Jupiter-6" logo on the right side of the synth. (I never even noticed it until I had to photograph it)
There is also a sticker on the front left. This could probably be removed with the right care."

Tone Science Module No.2 Elements and Particles Demo Mix

Tone Science Module No.2 Elements and Particles, set to be released on Oct 19, features the following supporters of MATRIXSYNTH: Todd Barton, Parallel Worlds, and Dave Bessel.

Details:

"Various Artists Tone Science Module No.2 Elements and Particles DiN:TS02

Release date 19th October 2018

Limited to 500 copies. Digipak CD format.

Tone Science sub-label, from DiN records, continues to explore the world of modular synth music.

This second compilation “Module No.2 Elements and Particles”, like its predecessor, features nine artists from different musical backgrounds with the common thread being that all the tracks were composed entirely with a modular synth system.

The album opens and closes with the ambient soundscapes of two tracks by Todd Barton and
r beny. Barton is a world renowned exponent of Buchla modular systems as well as the Music Easel employed on this track. Austin Cairns (aka r beny) has a penchant for lo-fi looped synth atmospheres which combined, in this case, with a field recording creates a haunting, evocative piece. The next three pieces by Bluetech, Parallel Worlds and Paul Nagle build up rhythmic and sequenced elements with a fascinating amount of detail that modular systems are so good at. They also all use various methods to produce a poly-rhythmic, fractal feel as patterns shift and change throughout their tracks. The middle of the album then sees a fascinating experimental ambient interlude by Dave Bessell (a member of the synth group Node) using waveguide physical modelling in the analogue domain. The second half of the album has a rawer, more gritty feel with Richard Quirk building up a crescendo of wonderful textures in his track “Radar Hill”. This is followed by Hainbach using the exotic Ciat-Lonbarde series of hand built instruments to produce, in his words, a piece of “pure electronic music”. Nathan Moody then brings proceedings to a climax with a gnarly, muscular track using a Buchla modular system before the blissful ending piece “Marine Layer” closes out the 60 minute sonic journey the listener has just travelled.

Boddy has curated both the artists and tracks on this album to flow in a musical way and not just be a collection of equipment heavy demos. Though fascinating and always cool to look at, it is important not to get lost in the gear for gear’s sake syndrome. Having said that this album features Eurorack, Serge, Buchla & Ciat-Lonbarde modular systems and the nine tracks show how varied and flexible these instruments can be.

'Tone Science Module No.2 Elements and Particles' continues the journey down the rabbit hole of possibilities and sound worlds inhabited by artists and musicians working in this ever fascinating and varied musical field.

New Behringer RD-808 & RD-909 Knobcon Videos

Behringer RD-909 (Roland TR-909 Clone) Sneak Preview

Published on Sep 10, 2018

Update: looks like the RD-808 video was pulled. Moved it below in case it comes back.

"At Knobcon 2018, we talked with Behringer about their upcoming RD-909 drum machine, an updated clone of the classic Roland TR-909.

Behringer was showing their initial 3D-printed model for the RD-909, which is used in the process of validating their design choices, and for testing out the 'feel' of the box. It has circuit boards in it - but they were not demoing it because the circuity and firmware are are still early in development.

Behringer was showing the RD-909 to get feedback on their initial design."

SYNTAR Synthesized Guitar w/ Build in Mini Keyboard

This one is in via @BuckRemus, who was curious if there was any relation to George Mattson's PMS Syntar, the first synthesizer keytar. I reached out to George and he said he didn't know what it is, so there is no relation.

If you know what this is, feel free to leave a comment.

There appears to be 16 buttons (presets?), and three colored buttons, one blue, one orange, and one grey.  Note there are six mini keys, so they could be the equivalent of the six strings on a guitar and meant to be strummed rather than pressed like traditional keys.  There are three knobs, or possibly four if the one on the right is just missing a knob cap.  There are a number of holes as you can see (tuning/calibration points?).

Update: Two more pics added below, and via @BuckRemus: "it didn't come with a power supply so we're hoping to find someone who knows something so we don't fry it (if it hasn't been already). If it helps, it was purchased in Maine."

Moog Grandmother Overview & Tour

Published on Sep 10, 2018 once upon a synth

"Let's go over each module on the Moog Grandmother and explain what the knobs and jacks do. The Grandmother is a new analog monophonic semi-modular synth from Moog. It has 2 analog oscillators, a low pass filter, spring reverb, ADSR envelope generator, an LFO (with sample and hold), mult, high pass filter, arpeggiator and sequencer.

In this video I'll start off with the audio signal path modules and then move onto to the utility/modulation modules."

"It's the last days of summer here in Norway, and we decided to spend a day sitting by the sea.

I set up on a rock with my OP-1 and field recorder, pointed the camera where I planned to sit, and just kinda hoped I'd actually get something in the frame. Since I sat right next to the sea I misjudged a little the volumes and the OP-1 is a bit loud. Something to keep in mind for the next time I want to record a synth and the ocean next to me at the same time.

I got this little jam, and some video with a GoPro, and edited it together with video from my friends DSLR and drone, to share the scenery and moment with you. Enjoy :)"
