Star Trek Deep Space Nine Theme played on the Deckard's Dream synthesizer

Published on Dec 18, 2018 Sean Christopher - Evoking Emotion Through Music

"Star Trek Deep Space Nine has long been one of my favorite Sci-Fi television shows and I've always found the theme song to be one of my favorite pieces ever written for the Star Trek franchise. The theme was composed by Dennis McCarthy and used mostly orchestral instruments. Creating a synth version of this awesome piece was just too tempting not to do on my Deckard's Dream synthesizer by Black Corporation.

The piece was multitracked via Cubase and the only FX I used was reverb and delay."

Prophet X / XL Sample Import and Mapping App Now Available from 8Dio

8Dio’s Sample Mapping Utility for the Prophet X and XL is now available. See this previous post for a demo. The official press release from Sequential follows:

"San Francisco, CA—Dec 18, 2018—Sequential today announced that the Prophet X, the company’s flagship samples-plus-synthesis instrument, now allows users to import their own samples to create custom instruments and content. Sample import and mapping is done via an easy-to-use software application created by 8Dio, Sequential’s factory sample content provider for the Prophet X. The application is available for download as a free public Beta from 8Dio’s website.

Because the Prophet X was designed to accommodate up to 50 GB of 16-bit, 48 kHz user content, custom sample import has been a highly anticipated feature of the instrument since its introduction in June of this year. The 50 GB of user sample storage, along with the 150 GB of internal factory samples make the Prophet X the most capacious of any hardware instrument supporting sample playback available today.

Sample playback is only part of the Prophet X package, however, as the instrument’s sound engine actually powers two simultaneous sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators, and adds a full complement of traditional synthesis tools, all processed through analog filters. Dual digital effects and a 64-step polyphonic sequencer round out the package. In standard performance mode, the instrument provides bi-timbral, 8-voice stereo, or 16-voice mono operation. 32-voice performance mode, which is a feature of the new 2.0 OS, allows paraphonic filter operation when using a single sampled instrument and oscillator.

“Letting users import their own material was an essential part of the Prophet X design from the beginning,” commented Dave Smith. “It makes what’s already our most sonically versatile instrument truly open-ended. We can’t wait to hear where musicians take it now. Things are going to get pretty wild.”

The Prophet X ($3,999 US MAP) and Prophet XL ($4,399 US MAP) are available from Sequential’s worldwide network of dealers.

Published on Dec 18, 2018 Learning Modular

"As part of my algorithmic percussion case, I knew I wanted a "skipper" as part of it to either randomly drop beats, or to trigger two different sounds from the same pattern to create variety. I decided to try a Ladik S-090 because it had a couple of extra options, including two different randomization algorithms, and interaction between its two channels. I demonstrate all of those possibilities in this video; I hope you enjoy it."

'The Hustle': Ferocious Mullet - Cirklon vs Kurzweil K2600r, Eurorack, Kyma, TX81z, + Sherman FB2

Published on Jun 9, 2017 Frequency Manipulator

"A work in progress. I have got as far I can working purely in the K2600. I have run out of MIDI channels. I should have built my percussion with more concise use of resources.

Sequentix Cirklon Sequencer triggering 16 channels of Kurzweil K2600r. I spent time recording and preparing all the source material using Avid Protools, Redmatica KeyMapPro, and Chicken Systems Constructor. All the whizzy noises are from the Modular processed with the Kyma. There is TX81z through the Sherman FB2 Filterbank.

All the drum loops are playing from one program on one MIDI channel using layer-switching & rhythmic slices.

Vocals recorded by Liza in Russia."

Created with a Gligli upgraded vintage analog synthesizer Prophet-600 by Sequential-Circuits and software plugins in Ableton Live. The Prophet in this case is responsible for the bassline and the treble analog stab notes.

Piano Roll in VCV Rack

Published on Dec 18, 2018 Omri Cohen

"I think that for people who enter the VCV Rack world, coming from a DAW environment, the thing they miss the most is the piano roll and the ability to visually program a sequence or a melody. Well, a few days ago the Piano Roll module from RCM was released, making it possible for programming notes in a piano roll environment with features like velocity, the ability to program up to 64 different patterns, an end of pattern trigger output, and more.

In this video, I go through all of the features of the Piano Roll, and then I build a patch from scratch, utilizing most of its features. It's a really nice and intuitive module, that will for sure just become more powerful with time, and it's available for free."

JoMoX XBase 888 Analog Drum Synthesizer SN 2009 - 0238

via this auction

"Hoping to continue the grand tradition of unique and intuitive analog instruments, while at the same time extending their capabilities using the latest technologies, we are proud to introduce the JoMoX XBASE 888, our newest analog drum machine. It combines the ultimate vintage sound with a modern, intuitive interface for both modern studio and live requirements. There are several notable new features on the XBASE 888:

The kick drum and the tom toms now each have an adjustable pitch envelope and sound even phatter than before!
The analog noise parameter of the snare and hi hat can be “metal-ized” to create sounds extremely similar to vintage drum machines - and this is fully adjustable!

And, because it has no X-Filter, the XBASE 888 is more affordable than the 999.
But it still has an unbeatable sound, this little beauty!"

Introducing EG WaveSHAPER

Published on Dec 18, 2018 ElliottGarage

"Download url:

EG WaveSHAPER is the first synthesizer that lets you create your sound with a finger.

Draw the waveform on the screen or shape a builtin one, mix it with a classic analog oscillator and a sub oscillator and automate all the knobs with 2 drawable LFOs and 2 ENVs

'Waveshaping is a synthesis-and-transformation technique that turns simple sounds into complex sounds'

2 wavetables can be designed and morphed to create unique and dynamic sounds under your finger, choosing the morph attack and release; complex spectra can be created waveshaping the oscillator and introducing non linear distortion, rich harmonics and a tube-vacuum behaviour.
The hybrid Waveshaping/Wavetable engine lets you combine a wavetable oscillator with a classic oscillator and a sub oscillator, to add additional sound layers and depth.

2 Lfo and 2 Envelopes with indipendent time can be assigned to virtually any of the synth parameters. They can also be graphically designed with the touch of your finger or you can choose among the builtin envelopes.

- Hybrid Wavetable/Waveshaping engine
- Draw your wavetable oscillator with your finger
- 100+ builin presets
- 30+ builtin waveforms to use and modify
- 2 LFOs and 2 ENVs assignable to any parameter
- FX: Reverb, Delay and EG Crush
- Detune osc to create huge unison sounds
- FM and Noise with configurble FM Ratio and Noise eq
- VCF and Reso filters
- Complete presets management with export and share
- Core MIDI: MIDI in, MIDI CC, MIDI poly aftertouch
- AU3 with full knobs parameters automation

Analogue Solutions Generator - 2 Generators plus a load of wires = AWESOME!

Published on Dec 18, 2018 Sounds From The Shed

"In this video I patched together 2 Generators to a single Polymath, Generator 1 is playing an Arp, Gen 2 some accompaniment. Each is providing their own different modulation. I can transpose Generator 1 from Generator 2 and visa versa. This gives a 32 step loop which can be auto and live transposed. Sounds mean!!!! :)"

YuSynth VCS3 Filter in Eurorack Format

Published on Dec 18, 2018 Randy Piscione

"This is a demo of a Eurorack version of the YuSynth VCS3 diode voltage controlled filter (VCF). It's a bit long, 6 minutes, but I tried to cover most of what it would do. There's no talking! I don't have a VCS3 to compare this too so I'm not sure if it really sounds like it's namesake filter, but it's still cool either way.

I start off with the usual frequency and resonance demo with one VCO input. At 2:00, another VCO is added. Around 3:00, some frequency modulation, 3:30, resonance modulation, at 4:30, both modulations and we see what it does with something closer to audio rates for modulation.

Other modules featured off-stage include a PM Foundations Synthola Sequencer and two Frequency Central Waverrunner LFOs."

New Propellerhead Complex-1 Modular Synthesizer for Reason

Published on Dec 18, 2018 Propellerhead

"Complex-1 is a modular synthesizer from Propellerhead Software, bringing the quirks, freedom and sonic depth of modular synthesis to to your Reason Rack. Boasting a 4x oversampled synthesis engine, a freely routable signal and modulation path and a sound like nothing else, Complex-1 is a synth lover’s dream machine.

If you’re a seasoned modular synth enthusiast, you can dive right in. If this kind synth is new to you, it can look a bit daunting, but it’s actually surprisingly easy to get going. Load up any of the included patches to get you going, and start your sonic exploration there. Nothing can break, and if things go weird (like, in a bad way), there’s the undo button to your rescue.

Most people associate modular synths with lab coats and glitchy noise soundscapes, but if all you want is a beefy bass - let Complex-1 surprise you. Its modular madness aside, it’s also a really awesome-sounding synthesizer, capable of perfectly playable instrument sounds and yes, beefy basses too.

The modules in Complex-1 bring a mix of modular synth ideologies to the Reason Rack. The Complex Oscillator, Low Pass Gates and Shaper modules, build on the works on Don Buchla (or West Coast style) and the regular Oscillator and ladder design Filter module, derive more from the Bob Moog school of synth design. Combine them anyway you like and craft your very own unique synth sounds.
