Casio HT-700 keyboard demo - "Interplanetary"

Alfonse

"Casio Casiotone HT-700 keyboard (1987)

The HT-700 is from the digital-analogue hybrid "Spectrum Dynamic" synthesis family of Casio keyboards. It's a mini-key variant of its larger siblings the HT-3000 and HT-6000, and a slightly more sophisticated, editable version of the Casiotone MT-600, with the same basic presets. It has a DCO-VCF-DCA synthesis structure, but using initial waveforms that vary over time, with a resonant analogue filter and a stereo chorus effect with three modes. Parameters can all be edited, with control of ADSR envelopes, and one parameter can be tweaked in real-time using the data wheel.

All sounds you hear in the track were made using the HT-700 and recorded to a DAW, where compression, EQ, and reverb were added as required. Individual drum hits were sampled from the rhythm pattern editor mode and sequenced in the DAW; the sequences were based on the 16Beat1 and Disco1 patterns on the HT-700, but allowed panning and processing of the lo-fi PCM samples.

1 California by Cindy Morrow

"Born into a musical family, San Francisco native Morrow grew up studying classical and jazz music, eavesdropped on her sister's Kraftwerk and Yellow Magic Orchestra vinyl rotations, blew her mind listening to a new band called Depeche Mode on a schoolbus during a field trip, and (re)discovered Philip Glass in Music History class & prog rock at the Laserium. She established her own groove in 80s synthpop & 90s shoegaze, and rounded out her playlists with modular and ambient music. Many hours of listening were had while riding Muni. This personal album comprises and embraces four decades of musical obsession, affection, and anguish."

Arturia Prophet V Demo and Tutorial (Prophet 5 and VS modes)

CatSynth TV

"Part 1 of our demo and tutorial of Arturia's Prophet V, a recreation of both the legendary Prophet 5 and VS by Sequential Circuits. In this video we present the P5 and VS modes, including patch editing. Part 2 will focus on the "hybrid mode" that combines the P5 and VS into a single novel instrument.

00:13 Introduction to P5, VS and Hybrid modes
00:42 Prophet 5 mode: architecture and patch programming
04:26 Prophet VS mode: architecture and patch programming
10:14 Exploring factory presets (P5 and VS)
17:55 Final thoughts and Hybrid mode teaser

'The Prophet 5 was the first totally programmable synthesizer on the market. This revolutionary synth became the basis for all other polysynths to this day. The Prophet VS was the last synth made by SCI and again it set the synth world on its ear. Its digital vector synthesis brought a new soundscape that was then carried on in products from Korg and Yamaha...While the Prophet 5 was known for its 2 oscillator analog warmth, the Prophet VS used four digital wave table oscillators giving a crystal and clear sound. We have recreated both of these classic machines to give them the detail heard in the originals.'"

"Would you pay 10k for a Moog Model 10? How about 1600 for a high quality boutique modular system featuring rare Club of the Knobs Wavefront Oscillators? These oscs alone have sold for 1k on Reverb, and here come with a well balanced, well-thought-out, portable, and self contained modular system featuring a slew of helpful ++ utilities -- LFO, Sample and Hold, Sequencer, classic OTA Lowpass Filter, Mult, Envelope, and VCA.

It's a ton of functionality in a tiny, but still 5u-sized, package -- built into a custom portable case.

And then there's the Wavefront oscs. Built on two 100% analog recreations of the classic Moog 921 oscillators, they sound amazing on their own, but add amazing waveshaping, "Morpheus" waveform-blending, and 32 different DSP effects including reverbs, chorus, phasing, etc. The "wavefront" section also includes 3 digital oscillators, and a sub-osc.

This system was really put together to show off the potential of the wavefront oscs, and I think it includes just the right amount of modulation to really make them sing, though it can also be a great addition to any existing 5u or eurorack setup."

"All keys, buttons, sliders, pitch/mod wheels, and aftertouch work perfectly. A few quirks include missing slider caps (on eBay for $15 easily replaceable), and a scratchy volume pot which is common on 80s synths and an easy fix if you even care to fix it. I usually just find a spot where it sounds clean and turn up volume on amp or mixer. The keybed still feels wonderful and luxurious to play, with sophisticated, precise, and delicate velocity and aftertouch response. Minus some hard to notice scuffs and wear, it’s actually one of the much cleaner and nicer examples of this vintage legend. Looking for a good new home."

Volca Beats, Volca Keys, and Octatrack MK2 workout with EZBOT!

Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) takes the Volca Beats and Volca Keys for a spin with his trusty Elektron Octatrack MK2! The Octatrack was used as a performance mixer but also a sample player and resampling device. The Volca Beats of course were the source of all the percussive sounds and the Volca Keys were responsible for the synth lines and surprisingly crunchy acid bassline.

Volca Keys:
'The ideal introductory synthesizer, with a simple yet powerful polyphonic analog sound engine and loop sequencer

Volca Keys is a long-awaited synthesizer that adds a new chapter to the long and storied history of Korg's analog synthesizers. Volca keys is a 27-key analog lead synth that generates unbelievably powerful sound from its compact body. Starting with a filter section that uses the circuitry of the legendary miniKORG700S (1974), it delivers astonishing sound that takes full advantage of Korg's half-century of know-how in circuit design.

With a simple structure that includes delay effect and a sequencer, it's also an ideal choice as a first analog synth. It offers the richly expressive sounds that are distinctive of an analog synth, providing the enjoyment of simple yet deep sound-creation.'

Order Volca Keys here: https://bit.ly/volca_keys

Volca Beats:
'Peerless beats generated by solid analog drum sounds and an Electribe-style sequencer

Even today, more than thirty years after the age dominated by analog synthesizers, we just can't let go of the sound of analog rhythm machines. Those thick sounds have the power to stand up to guitar and acoustic drums, and are still indispensable for track-making or live performance.

The volca beats gives you those analog drums plus the easy-to-use step sequencer of the Electribe; it lets you turn your inspiration into reality and generate beats with the best high quality sounds.'

Frap Tools Brenso & 1010 BitBox Micro Eurorack Modular Synthesizer Jam

Perfect Circuit

"In this jam we used the new Brenso oscillator from Frap Tools as the main synth voice, the 1010 Music Bitbox Micro is providing the drum samples and the sequencing is provided by the Make Noise 0-CTRL and ALM Pam’s New Workout.

The Brenso is a dual oscillator capable of frequency and amplitude modulation as well as the ability to sync the oscillators to each other. There is also a built in wave shaper that allows you to dynamically control harmonics. The wave shaper section can also be used as a VCA, this allows you to just add an envelope generator and have a complete synth voice. In this video we used the Frap Tools Falistri to generate envelopes to modulate the amplitude and FM amount. One of the patches uses a little bit of filtering from the new version of the Mutable Instruments Ripples. Using a sequencer like the 0-CTRL for this type of synth voice works well since you can control the pitch as well as other parameters. We also added some modulation with the XAOC Batumi quad LFO.

The drum sounds are all samples from the new 1010 Music Bitbox Micro which is a smaller version of the original Bitbox, even though it is smaller it still has 8 channels and is a good option to add sampling to your eurorack modular. The drums are sequenced by the Pam’s New Workout used as a clock divider.

"If you’re after a classic Roland Juno-106 or TR-707, you might not know that both (plus a bass synth) are found inside the MKS-7 or “Super Quartet” from 1985.

Roland made various rack mount versions of their 80s synths in the MKS range, but the Super Quartet is a little different and is somewhat related to their earlier CMU-800.

In this video we take a look at what it does, how it was intended to be used and how it can be used in ways that weren’t intended.

Tim Shoebridge

"For the past month or so I have been working on a new combined Preset & Sample Library for the Waldorf Quantum and Iridium called "Evo". Evo utilises samples that I recorded from one of my favourite hybrid synthesisers, originally released over 18 years ago. This video showcases a demo track called Kaleidoscope that I put together solely using Evo presets - you are only hearing the Waldorf Quantum apart from the drum tracks. I'm only using digital filters for this track, so the sound will be the same for the Iridium also. Evo will be released very soon, I'm just working on the finishing touches."

FACTmagazine

"Last month, West Coast composer, artist, and producer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith launched her latest album, The Mosaic of Transformation. With the world locked down due to the coronavirus pandemic, she experimented with live streaming as a way to launch the LP in lieu of being able to perform at venues.

In this episode of Patch Notes, we present an exclusive archive video of one of those live streams, which features an extended version of album highlight ‘Expanding Electricity’ performed with Buchla modules and touchplate controller alongside visuals by Sean Hellfritsch originally made for the tour.

The Mosaic of Transformation is available on now Ghostly International and can be purchased at Bandcamp. Smith also recently launched a multidisciplinary platform called Touchtheplants, which releases music and art, including a book and deck of cards called Listening.
