The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation Announces ARPs for All

via The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation where you can find additional details.

"The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation (ARPF) is thrilled to announce ARPs for All: a new program to bring the magic and inspiration of rare vintage ARP synthesizers to EVERYONE in the music-making public.

In partnership with The Record Co. (TRC), ARPs for All is launching an initial collection of 5 instruments (the ARP Avatar, Axxe, Odyssey, and a vintage ARP 2600 with ARP Sequencer) available for hands on use, learning, and experimentation at TRC’s community recording and rehearsal facility in Boston. Over the summer of 2021, these will be joined by an ARP Omni, Quadra, Solus as well as a rare ARP Explorer on loan from the estate of Alan R. Pearlman.

In the coming year ARPF and TRC will grow this living collection of instruments and foster deeper community engagement through experiential educational programming for the public as well as music synthesis-focused residencies for emerging artists.

Join us and make ARP’s incredible legacy of musical (and electrical!) ingenuity accessible to future generations of makers. In other words: ARPs for All!"

Roland DDR-30 Digital Drums 1985 | When Roland took on Simmons

video by Espen Kraft

"Roland DDR-30 from 1985. The brain in a digital drum system Roland designed to compete with Simmons at the time. Complete this came with a full set of drum pads to go along.

The DDR-30 is a digital/analog hybrid system. The 24 12-bit PCM samples are digital, but each of the 6 drum voices you can play at the same time are processed analog through the CEM 3360 VCA. Not untypical for the rest of the Roland MKS modules from this era.

All the 6 drum voices (kick, snare and 4 different toms) can be triggered from pads through the 6 trigger inputs on the back. Or the voices can be played over MIDI. The 6 voices also have their own individual outputs. There's also a mixed stereo output.

The demo song in the beginning is done with only the DDR-30 providing drums. The hi-hat is not part of the DDR-30, but since you can process the individual drum voices with no less than 16 parameteres each, I just took a snare and tuned it into a hat and overdubbed that part.

The rest of the demo song is Sequential Six-Trak for a LIVE solo while bass, poly synth and arps are coming from the Jupiter-8."

Maneco Labs - Otterley Stereo Reverb

video by NOISEBUG

"This is a demo of the Maneco Labs Otterley Stereo Reverb eurorack module. Its a dual reverb design that can create some epic soundscapes and pitch shifting. More info can be found here -

https://www.noisebug.net/products/man..."

via Noisebug

"Otterley is a rich dual reverb, but with simple operations.

It includes two engines, reverb one, controlled by just a knob but with rich and atmospheric flavor , and reverb two , a reverse reverb with several associated parameters.

Despite its complexity, operation is quite simple, no menus, no switches, no hidden functions.

Description of controls:

●Reverb 1 :one knob level and size control for first engine, as level increases also does size and modulation complexity for this lush component.

●Reverb 2 : reverse reverb engine blend control , from dry to full wet.

●Feedback : regeneration for Reverb 2 , from zero to almost self oscillation.

●Delay: time and size for reverse component, from almost immediate to dry signal to quasi reverse delay character , for reverb 2

●Grain : density for reverb 2 , from identifiable reverb grains to blurred sound strokes at maximum.

"We love to share with you the progress of our first sampling drum machine. We’re super excited that the unit has passed all audio tests today and much of the user interface development is now also completed. Man, this thing grooves;-) However, this is still a prototype and a long way from production.

Rest assured that our drum machine development team is working overtime to complete this exciting instrument as quickly as possible in order to get it into your drumming hands...

P.S. This is just the beginning and there is so much more in the pipeline. Stay tuned."

Befaco Introduces Morphader CV Controlled Crossfaders

video by Befacosynth

"The core of the module has four CV controlled crossfaders, each with their individual control and a master fader to control them all. The module mixes the four crossfades at its fourth output, thanks to a clever normalization scheme. Each of them can be easily removed from the mix by plugging a cable at its own output, providing a flexible mechanism to have several independat crossfades or a master scene fading. Morphader is a performative tool designed to make multichannel CV/Audio crossfade easy and comfortable. Fading from one quad CV/audio scene to another.

Patch description:
We have two sets of audio sources (8 in total) and two sets of CV sources.

Two Morphaders are used here. One is crossfading audio and the second one is crossfading CVs that control the audio sources."

Pics of the inside below. See this post for a demo of one.

"This is literally the first sample based synth/keyboard ever made. It paved the way to all of what we have today and was the first of its kind.

I've said it before- I'll say it again- these are rare. Less than 200 of these were ever produced. This is the third to ever hit the market, and the finest and most clean example to ever be offered for sale.

It is in excellent condition and comes with the original manual.

It is Serial #A-201. I am not sure what serial number they started with but I believe it to be very early 1982.
The manual is the second edition printed in 1984 but also states on the title page the manual goes to units Serial Number B-300 and above. So the keyboard is older than the manual. And given if 200 were made, mine is serial 201, and in 1984 they were on B-300. This may be one of the first, if not the earliest unit made.

There is very little known about these units and I did my best to learn and research it.

I do not believe it has preloaded the grand piano sound but has numerous other sounds. There is a photo to see the ROM chips installed with their sounds, and also labels were placed on the buttons for the sound/preset a couple labels are missing. I am not sure if these labels came from the factory or not. And I know that these units varied with what sounds/patches/chips they came with. Some didn't even have all 16 sounds there are buttons for. The unit also does not have MIDI in's or outs labeled "COMPUTER INTERFACE" on the back of the unit - which makes me believe it was early- or they just varied with presets/sounds/features between the units produced. Given the labels are hand written on the chips, and there's no MIDI this could be an early early prototype.

I believe it has 13 sounds installed and has room for 2 more sound chips. Every key and button works fine.

Every feature works just fine... vibrato/pitchbend, all the knobs without issue.

I don't want to call the condition mint- but for its age - it's as clean as it could be. Wood is in absolutely excellent condition, the metal is also, screen printing/labeling/badging all clean. The inside of the keyboard is clean as a whistle- no dust- no dirt. It's the cleanest/finest to ever hit the market. Some light wear on the back, and the back hinge but still - I'd put this 8.5/9 out of 10."

Patch Notes: INIT

video by FACTmagazine

"INIT is the collaborative project of Berlin-based producers Nadia D’Alò and Benedikt Frey. The duo’s first album, Two Pole Resonance, was released back in October 2015 on John Talabot’s Hivern Discs label, showcasing the pair’s love of moody, krautrock-influenced synth compositions, which featured vocals from D’Alò.

INIT returned to the label in late 2020 with their second LP, Gravity. The album saw the duo adopting a more playful approach to songwriting, combining house, techno, post-punk and electro to create a lighter set of tracks than their debut. This eclectic style drives INIT’s Patch Notes session, which melds D’Alò’s lyrics with experimental sound design.

The session sees the duo make use of classic gear like Roland’s TR-808 drum machine and SH-101 synth, with contemporary hardware including a x0xb0x and SOMA’s Pulsar-23 semi-modular drum machine providing eerie textures.
