New Music Toolbox: Synthesizing Environmental Sounds by Peter Speer

4-part series playlist above by New Music USA. You can find the write-up on

"Let’s do a quick exercise: listen to a sound, any sound (a baby crying, a phone ringing), and ask yourself: can I hum it? Trace the movement of the sound with your hand in the air and observe: is it rising and falling in a pattern? The answers to these questions point toward the equipment needed to recreate them. I’d like to synthesize the sounds of the beach, in particular a memory I have of an afternoon spent there as a child. We’ll begin with the sound of ocean waves from the listening perspective of the shoreline. It’s low tide and the surf is mild. The sun hangs in the air, lazily. Read more on"

S-CAT Circuit Bent Casio MT-40 with midi clock.

video upload by Space Cat Audio Technologies

"Here we have S-CAT Circuit bent instrument number 1075. We have been modifying instrument like this for some 15 years now. To celebrate the end of an era, we have added midi sync along with our usual 26-mods for a customer in Germany. Let me know what you think, as this is, as far as we know, the only Midi clocked Casio MT-40 in the world. We may consider supplying the midi retro-fit as a diy kit. :)"

Test run on the S-CAT midi synced Casio MT-40 Sleng-Teng and a Roland TR-909. Full audio. :)

"We have added midi clock input to the Casio MT-40, this is just an off the cuff jam to test that it’s running properly. :)"

Jupiter-6: The Dystopian Synth

video upload by Alex Ball

"A Jupiter-6 stopped by for a few days so I thought I'd complete the trinity having done videos on the Jupiter-4 and Jupiter-8 last year.

This synth has a reputation for having a "cold" sound and it's always been the more dystopian Jupiter in my mind. I wanted to explore whether there are any reasons for that and whether they're legitimate, imagined or a bit of both.

TIME SEGMENT OSCILLATOR | Weston Precision Audio - TS0 Analog VCO

video upload by DANIELE

"The Weston Precision Audio TS0 is a very unique analog VCO which allows you to create your own waveshapes using the 12 individual sliders. You can store up to 5 different sounds and go crazy with the modulation section!"

TS0 Time Segment Oscillator

TS0 is a unique analog VCO which allows you to "draw" the shape of your waveform via the 12 individual sliders. Each segment can then be individually modulated by one of 2 modulation inputs. Additionally, the top level driving VCO can be mixed in for more harmonics. In Sample & Hold mode, TS0 can generate a stream of completely random waves formed by the built in analog noise source. You can even turn the frequency way down and use the output as a 12 step sequencer! From epic drones, to wavetable-type tones, the TS0 can do it!

+3 distinct modes: Live, preset, and sample & hold.
+5 preset storage locations.
+Transistor based white noise source.
+Sub-octave square wave output.

+24HP module size, 25mm Deep
+Power 100mA +12V / 60mA -12V

The sound range is five octaves and the instrument consists of 4 sections: piano, that synthesizes piano like lead soundings of different timbres, analog string machine, that plays wonderful string sounds with soft attack and with the possibility to control release, tremolo and the pereodically repeated beat-fading sounds. A flexible bass section, that is controlled by 2 lower octaves, that contain three 8' and two 16' registers.
The Opus is based on divide-down technology with a master oscillator and has very nice multimode filter (LPF, BPF and HPF with resonance), a fantastic chorus, ring modulator, vibrato and and a lot other features.

The video shows the features and sounds. A musical demo track coming soon. Thank you."

The Cloney Project VCS3 Clone

via this auction

"100% faith full VCS3 recreation that has been professionally built by RAMCUR who built The Hornet Modular with PIN Electronics from a few years ago.

The main parts of this synth are from a kit from Germany's The Cloney Project. As you can see in the pictures, we upgraded a number of parts (solid shaft CTS pots all around being a significant upgrade to the feel and longevity) with premium parts as well as a number of period correct electronic parts where needed in the audio path. We also used the same spring reverb tank, meter and joystick pots that EMS used in their original design. Furthermore, the matrix is a custom Swiss made 16x16 Ghielmetti which is far superior than the the one that came with the kit. In fact, Ghielmetti make the best patch matrixes in the world. This synth sounds and feels amazing, it was built with no expenses spared.

Extras I'm including with the synth are a Kenton Pro Solo MK3 MIDI-CV converter, a custom 1/8" to Cinch-Jones conversion box, 3 extra Cliff knobs with chrome caps and a beautiful custom made dust cover. I'll also transfer my membership of The Cloney Project which will allow you to purchase their most recent kit which is high quality clone of the DK2 keyboard that matches this synth."
