Dave Smith Has Passed Away

I just heard the news.
I am at a loss for words...

Update: I added some words below. As you likely are, I am in complete shock. Please be kind.

via @SequentialLLC

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Dave Smith has died. If you’d like to share your thoughts and memories of Dave, please reach out to us on our website:"

Update: a statement from Sequential:

"American Synthesizer Pioneer and Sequential Founder Dave Smith Passes at 72

San Francisco, CA—June 1, 2022 — It is with great sadness that Sequential today shares the news that its founder, American synthesizer pioneer Dave Smith, has died. The company and his family take solace in the fact that Dave was on the road at the time of his passing, doing what he loved best, and in the company of family, friends, and artists.

Focusrite CEO Tim Carroll commented: “Dave’s passing is a great loss to not only the music community and music technology, but to the world itself. To say that he changed music is no exaggeration. Dave’s legacy is one of creative passion and a deep and lifelong love for music, music technology, and the musicians that continue to enrich our world by using his instruments. At 72 he was still actively designing his next generation of synths. At the same time, he had the foresight to mentor and build Sequential into a team that will continue his work and legacy without pause. Dave will be greatly missed, but his contributions to music will never be forgotten.”

Though Dave Smith and Sequential had been scheduled to appear at the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) convention in Anaheim from June 3 to June 5, Sequential will now decline to participate out of respect for Dave Smith’s memory.

For those wishing to send condolences to the Smith family and share thoughts and memories of Dave and his creations, Sequential invites the public to send comments to

About Sequential
Originally launched in 2002 as Dave Smith Instruments, Sequential was founded by legendary electronic instrument designer Dave Smith and is helmed by respected audio and music industry veteran CEO David Gibbons. Dave Smith’s many accomplishments included the creation of the Prophet-5 — the world’s first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer — and his legacy as the primary driving force behind MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)."

Some words: I am in complete shock. I don't know what to say. As you all know Dave was so vibrant and full of life. It's difficult for me to process that he is gone. I met Dave a few times at NAMM and he always had a smile on his face. He was always welcoming, honest, and supportive.

My first Sequential Circuits synth was a Multi-Trak, followed by a Six-Trak, Pro-One, Prophet-5, and finally a Prophet-VS. I picked up an Evolver desktop early on, and I picked up an OB-6 desktop after selling my OB-Xa.

As you know, there are two large Sequential banners on top of the site. Sequential (and previously DSI) has been the site's largest sponsor to date. They have supported the site since October 15, 2015. Knowing I had Dave Smith's support meant the world to me. It's a humbling experience to know one of your heroes believes in your work enough to support it. Running a site like this can be challenging as some people can be quick to judge, and it's impossible to please everyone. Whenever I have doubts I'd remind myself I do have people that appreciate and see value in what I do. Knowing Dave Smith was one of them meant the world to me. I'm just one individual he made an impact on. His genuine love for what he did, and his open, kind, approachable, supportive, and just fun demeanor made our world a better place. His instruments will continue to have a positive impact on others for generations to come.

If you ever want to know what the most difficult aspect of running a site like this is, it's this. It's when we lose our heroes and we have to post something that doesn't even come close to describing how incredible a person was to you. I don't know what to say... Just, the older we get, the more of our heroes pass, and the more we realize how short and precious life is. We are all running out of time. Cherish life and those you love. Make life better for yourself and for others. Appreciate life and appreciate your heroes. Don't dwell on those that refuse to see the best in you. Focus on those who do. Dave Smith was that to me and I will miss him so much.

Jam 76.1 Doepfer MS-404 and TR-8 #Electro Jams

video upload by Erhalder

"The Dopefer MS-404 MIDI Analog Synthesizer was developped and produced around 1994 by Dieter Doepfer. It is a nice monophonic synth. The drums are shaped by a Crayon Full Range Overdrive. It's a nice overdrive as it won't cut as much high and low frequencies as other overdrives do, I guess that's why it is marketed as "full range". The 404 is fed through a Boss RV70 Digital Stereo Reverb, also produced in 1994.

Envelop the Waves

video upload by MAKEN0ISE

"The envelope is a container. It’s the thing you place the message in before you send it. The envelope of a sound is its shape, or as Pierre Schaeffer called it, the “profile.”

In a modular synth, you can use an envelope to "envelop" any kind of sound, including one that already has its own envelope or profile!

Born and raised in New York, Anthony Baldino is an LA based composer and sound designer whose work spans an enormous range of production avenues. The likelihood that you haven't heard his work is nearly impossible, with music and sound design in too many trailer campaigns to list, including Tenet, Prometheus, Interstellar, Ex-Machina, Star Wars: Rogue One, and Avengers: Infinity War and End Game just to name a few. From there, his work ventures to the opposite pole of production with custom sound design based compositions for Dolby Labs mixed in Atmos, beautifully glitched out remixes, and continues on to mind-bending modular synthesizer performances.

Quick Demo of Five Augmented Voices Patches

video upload by boxoftextures

"Quick demo of five Augmented Voices patches I've made. Augmented Voices, along with Augmented Strings, are two of the new synths included in the just released Arturia V Collection version 9. Similar(ish) programming interface to Pigments, each patch has two layers, one "voice-y" layer and one "synth-y" layer, and each of those has two sound sources, kind of like oscillator equivalents. In a way they're simple to program but they're at the same time pretty deep as well. Lots of flexibility and all sorts of things you can do with the controls. Looking forward to spending more time with the Augmenteds.

Note that this is the very short version of this video just to demo the patches. There'll be a longer version in a few days that shows two of the patches being made start to finish.

All patches are mine, and the end theme under the credits is one of the patches from the video.

Geologist used on stage for 2012-2013 CHz touring.

SN: SE10307 There is some cosmetic wear including minor scratches and sticky residue on the side panels. The keys have almost entirely yellowed but they are in good playing condition. There is a strip of loop-side velcro on the top left corner of the control panel with a piece of tape below it indicating there used to be a delay pedal housed there. There are two long strips of hook-side velcro running up and down the underside of the synth. All buttons, knobs and wheels function properly. The synth as a whole is in good working order. No power supply included. User's manual as well as Moog road case with wheels included.

All items in The Official Animal Collective Reverb Shop ship fully insured with delivery confirmation and a signed and embossed Certificate Of Authenticity from Animal Collective.

Also included is a poster for "Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper" as well as 2 Animal Collective lanyards."

"This Moog MiniMoog Voyager Select Series is owned by Animal Collective

There is some cosmetic wear including light scratches and scuffs throughout. The buttons, knobs and faders are intact. The synth appears to have some electronic issues preventing it from producing a signal. However, this could be a simple electronic repair as the instrument appeared to work fine for a few moments before losing signal. We believe that 2 of the oscillators are malfunctioning. Power supply not included. Moog roadcase with wheels included.

Though certainly used other places, this was definitely used on AC's remix of Don't Think Twice It's Alright by Bob Dylan.

SN: 4063801 There is some cosmetic wear including light scratches, scuffs and dust throughout, but the synth is overall in clean condition. There are a couple of very small dings in the side wood panels. The instrument is in proper working order. All buttons, knobs, faders and keys are intact. Overall this is a great synthesizer that features a plethora of sounds and colors at its player's fingertips. No case or power supply included.

Torso T-1 Ambient Session

video upload by Thoow

"I had a lot of fun with the Torso T-1 the last days. Such an inspiring and different way to create music. It is more like observing the device creating music for you. But you still guide the direction. And then it can play its track for hours, always slightly changing and evolving. Like this piece.

Here I sequence a couple of different tracks within Ableton. Two voices play the Grand Piano Stretch, three tracks use instruments from the Modeselector pack and everything else is drums and percussions."
