Alternative Firmware ROM for the Yamaha DX9 Brings it Closer to the DX7

You might remember this video from Espen Craft on how the Yamaha DX9 is essentially a 4-Op DX7. The DX7, of course, is a 6-Op FM synth. ajxs on Github is working on a ROM that will update the DX9 into a 6-Op synth a pitch envelop generator to more closely match the DX7. Details follow:

"DX9/7 is an alternative firmware ROM for the Yamaha DX9 synthesiser. Its aim is to uplift the DX9's functionality to more closely match that of the DX7. It restores features that were intentionally restricted in the firmware, such as increasing the operator count to six, and adding a pitch envelope generator. This ROM makes the synth properly patch-compatible with the DX7.

This is not a patch for the existing DX9 firmware, it is an entirely new firmware ROM. It has been assembled from the original binary, together with code from the DX7's V1.8 ROM, as well as new code written from scratch.

New Features:

Makes the DX9 able to play DX7 patches.
Restores the use of all six operators.
The synth is now sensitive to the velocity of incoming MIDI notes.
Implements the DX7's pitch EG.
Implements DX7 style operator scaling.
Implements DX7 style portamento/glissando.
What is the current status of the ROM?

This firmware is currently highly experimental. Although the main features are fully working, testing and bugfixes are ongoing. Installing the firmware for everyday general use is currently not recommended. As additional testing is performed this will improve. If you do intend to use the ROM despite this warning, please refer to the section on reporting issues. Development, and testing of the cassette interface is ongoing, and at this point it should only be used for testing purposes.

The risk of any harm coming to your DX9 as a result of using this ROM is incredibly, incredibly small, however the developers take no responsibility for any issues that may arise as a result of using this alternate firmware. All care has been taken, and considerable testing has been performed, however the developers accept no liability for any issues.

Hear the Futuristic Synth Everyone's Talking About - Osmose Sound Demo - No Talking

video upload by Perfect Circuit

"Several years in the making, Expressive E's Osmose is one of the most unique keyboard synthesizers available. Using a cutting-edge keyboard design, it can detect multiple levels of pressure, left and right movement, and more...creating a tremendously expressive playing experience. Paired with the onboard Eaganmatrix sound engine, you'll get everything from classic synth pads to uncanny physical-modeled tones—and frankly, it'll make you re-think the way you play a keyboard altogether.
Plus, it makes one heck of a MIDI controller, complete with MPE capability. If you need a futuristic synthesizer or controller, there's simply nothing else like Osmose.

love on a real train // mc-707 cover

video upload by geomagnetics

"This is a cover of the great Tangerine Dream song. I wanted to stick close to the original version while keeping it strictly on the MC-707 and not use external gear. I've loved this song for as long as I can remember but covering it gave me a whole new respect for what they did in those studios before computers and grooveboxes.
I sequenced it all except for a few sweeps and fades which ends up pretty boring to look at. So I threw in some holiday footage"

Tiptop Z DSP feedback

video upload by Todd Barton

"A simple feedback patch to listen to what is inside the various reverb algorithms of the Halls of Valhalla card for the Tiptop Audio D-ZSP Digital Signal Processor. Of course you are just hearing the same Decay/Tone/Chorus knobs setting for each iteration. So much more possible by playing the knobs. And, of course, more various sonic universes with the other cards.
Enjoy!

"3 oscillator semi-modular synth, complex modulation capabilities, MIDI & CV control.

Probably no other monophonic analog synth has this amount of sound bending capabilities at your fingertips on an ultra-compact footprint. Directly prepatched and switchable are:

VCO2 synchable to VCO1
VCO3 can modulate either VCO2 (only) or VCO1 + 2
VCO3 can modulate the filter
VCO3 can be taken out of the audio path completely, becoming an 'invisible' source for modulation only
the filter envelope (VCF) can modulare VCO2 ('sweep VCO')
VCF has two modes of keytracking
both LFOs can control VCOs AND filter cutoff at the same time and with independent settings
LFO1 can do S&H by sampling LFO2 (making them interdependent) or the noise generator
oh, there actually is an "OSC4" which is white noise (with its own level control), in addition to the white noise setting on VCO3 and the white noise setting on LFO2. That's 3 noise generators in just one synth.
glide function
VCA switchable positive / negative
envelope trigger switch
...
In addition, there are the patch points which add PWM modulation, external audio insert points, individual VCO outs, V-gate in on LFO1 +++

Condition:
Fully functional. Great overall cosmetic condition. Very few signs of use. Some hairline scratches around the sides, particularly the front. Hardly visible – see photos.

In Europe, this comes with a 12V AC 1A adapter (EU-style plug – 230V). Not switchable! Will NOT include in North America / Japan sales to save on shipping weight. You'll need to buy one that works at your local voltages."

Jam - Novation Summit - Exploring Split Mode #notalking #synthesizer

video upload by HansiLa

"A one-take jam with the Novation Summit in split mode.

Whipping something quick with a latched arp on part B and messing around with notes on part A. There may need to be a longer part 2 as there's some fun to be had with the onboard effects and mod matrix. Despite just scratching the surface, I love how easy and quick it is to drum up great sounds on this synth.

As always, the goal with multiple synths on this channel is to see how each instrument sounds with the other and to improve my key and programming chops. With that in mind... there is minimal processing of these sounds. There's no compression or EQ on this piece."

1979 DSS Modes

video upload by Todd Barton

"Just got this 1979 Modular module, the Dual Sequential Switch and am having a blast! Here's just a simple yet effective fun patch to feature the Mode settings. Enjoy!

My Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/synthtodd"

Bidirectional sequential switches for audio and CV

The DSS is intended as a companion for the Buchla 245/246 sequencers and other "quad" modules in Buchla format such as the 281 and 292. New possibilities for performance and composition arise from the ability to dynamically route multiple sources to multiple destinations without repatching.

BUILD OPTIONS. Choose from one of three build options. See the images above for illustrations of each build type. On the standard build the main I/O uses Tinijax on the top half and banana jacks on the bottom half. Custom builds with all Tinijax or all banana jacks for the main I/O are also available. If you want a custom build, please send an email with your build preference after placing your order. If no preference is stated your module will be supplied as a standard build.

The main I/O is bidirectional, meaning that the module works as a 4:1 multiplexer or a 1:4 demultiplexer. Patch up to four signals to the inputs labeled 1-4 and they will be sequentially routed to the common I/O jack. Alternately, patch one signal source to the I/O jack and it will be sequentially distributed to the 1-4 jacks.

Each half of the module has its own independent loop length (from 1 to 4 steps) and sequencing mode: forwards, backwards, forwards and then backwards (pendulum), or random. The SC (Step Change) output generates a trigger whenever the sequence length is changed, which is useful for synchronizing the upper and lower halves of the module or communicating state changes to other modules. The analog CV addressing input (ADDR) bypasses pulse-based control and allows an external CV source to select which step is active, similar to the "analog" CV input on the Buchla 245/246.

These extensive control and sequencing options make the DSS one of the most fully-featured sequential switches available in any modular format. Every aspect of the switching schema is accessible, facilitating previously inaccessible patching opportunities.

Tech Specs

4:1 or 1:4 sequential switches for audio or CV

Variable sequence length (1-4 steps) with voltage control

Variable switching mode (forward, reverse, pendulum, random) with voltage control

VC step addressing via clock, direct selection, or external 0-10V CV

Extensive pulse I/O for synchronization with external modules

Extra Settings

RESET/TRIG switch toggle. By default, pressing the RESET switch returns the sequencer to step 1, but this switch can also be used as a manual trigger source. Press RESET for 5 seconds to toggle this setting. The SC LED will blink to confirm the change. Now when the switch is pressed the TRIG jack will be pulsed instead. The RESET and TRIG jacks still work independently. Press RESET again for 5 seconds to toggle the switch function back to a manual reset.

Manual step selection. Press the RESET switch and then turn the STEPS knob for manual channel selection. This works like the ADDR CV input but doesn't require external CV. Note that all trigger inputs (RESET, TRIG, and the four SELECT jacks) can still change which channel is active so this feature works best when those inputs are not being used.

Pendulum behavior. Press the RESET switch and then turn the MODE knob to change how the Pendulum mode behaves. There are four possible settings which correlate with the four F/B/P/R labels around the knob.

"In 100% perfect working good condition.
The ProTone is an analog synthesizer with the ability to generate a wide range of sounds, from fat classic analog tones to exciting FX sounds.
The modulation system is incredibly unique and powerful, allowing for up to five modulation destinations to be set simultaneously.
The LFO waveforms feature six standard shapes, random, noise and external input as an LFO.
It's quite fascinating that it features an external input LFO and PAN.
You can create sounds that move fluidly between the left and right channels.
In the VCO2 section, you can use external input as a VCO.
This means you can use this unique modulation system as an effect processor and even combine it with VCO1.
The ProTone supports CV/Gate control as well.
CV/Gate can be switched between input and output modes using the internal jumper settings.
This unit is compatible with both 115V and 230V.
Currently, the voltage selector is set to 115V, and it is located inside the unit."

SIDETRACKED / figuring out recording setup / eurorack

video upload by BRiES

"I got sidetracked so much the last few weeks trying to figure out a better way to record signals from the modular. It's not at all straightforward. Here I recorded the bass onto a seperate channel to get the 'oomph' back into it with some nice pre-amp plugin... sounds like a good fix right? But now I can't run it through the sidechain compression which means I can't hear how the track SHOULD sound when tracking it. SMH.

After recording this video I've adopted the 'outboard mixer road' completely. It's a hell of a mess of cables but the flexibility of an outboard desk with 3 stereo outs and 6 aux sends is hard to beat. The mixer I have has a great sound to it as well and after a lot of consideration I realised creating an environment for making music and sounds should always primarily be based on sound rather than practicality (even though both matter and it sometimes is a difficult balance)."
