"I received the email - I got to the top of the queue for the Cirklon. Why did I even sign up for it? I spent 3 years not preparing for it, just assuming some day I would have to make a decision, and now I'm here. What would it do for me I can't already do? My Spectralis does all I need, albeit, in maybe not the best way possible - but is there a best way? Sure, I can see the Cirklon does more, better, faster, but also maybe does things I don't care about.

I actually hate having a lot of gear hooked up. Slows me down. 3-4 pieces is good enough for me. If you can't make a song with only a few instruments, then I question whether you can make music at all (Ok, that's just me talking to myself about my own capacities - huge orchestras are built off of tons of instruments, I get it). What I make is simple, sad, and that's it. My music only speaks to me saying: some day - you will not be among the living and this music is being made to haunt those left behind.

I know the Cirklon is the 'best sequencer' out there... so maybe I just need to buy it and see for myself. I do know the Spectralis does stuff I really enjoy, like sequencing itself and other gear, using it as an FX processor to manipulate all sorts of things to the beat. Just a unique piece... I also know it so well.

"A comparison between Behringer Solina String Ensemble and three different Solina software clones: Arturia Solina V2 (virtual analog), UVI String Machines 2 (sampled based) and a Solina sample pack från BiggaGiggas (samples).

The settings used in all examples is all instruments, ensemble on, medium bass volume, medium crescendo and medium release.

Some of the instruments are made to shine in stereo but for the sake of comparison everything is in here in mono, just as the original Solina was made as well as the hardware Behringer clone. No external processing such EQ has been applied but small settings on the instruments to reproduce about the same sound as close as possible and volume matching.

The purpose of the comparison is to show the different character of the hardware Solina clone and some Solina software clones."

I have this synth for many years now, but only recently it has completely opened up to me using the Electra One with the Tauntek firmware. This gives me all the controls at my fingertips instead of the single slider on the AX73. Sometimes the interface of a device simply hampers you in your creative process and then you don't use it that often. The AX73 is a phenomenal synth and totally underappreciated. I love the quirkiness and character of this synth. It is a beast of its own.

"This is a video demonstrating the sounds of the LEP Bongo CV by L.E.P. laboratories.

This is a rare piece of gear. L.E.P. laboratories is a small manufacturer mostly know for their LepLoop minimalist groove-box. There are no sound examples available for this module, but somehow the description and the controls attracted me. I just bought it and I have no regrets doing so. It is quite a wild module which can go from regular percussive sounds to fully distorted techno madness. I couldn't really get a bongo sound out of it, but who cares!"

"Released during the era of the Minimoog and ARP Odyssey, Octave's The Cat is a classic analog synthesizer whose design closely resembles the ARP Odyssey, leading to legal action from ARP in the late 1970s. This monophonic/duophonic synthesizer features two oscillators capable of square and sawtooth waveforms, with VCO 1 also offering a triangle waveform. Each waveform can be played simultaneously and mixed, with additional sub-octave oscillators on each VCO for creating rich and interesting sounds.

The keyboard can switch between 2-voice (poly) and 1-voice (mono) modes. In mono mode, the two oscillators can be stacked for a rich mono-bass or mono-lead synth sound. Poly mode splits the oscillators into separate voices, allowing for slightly more complex melodies with overlapping notes or basic pads. The sub-oscillator plays an octave below the actual note, adding warmth and depth to your sounds.

The Cat has been used by artists such as The Dust Brothers, Chemical Brothers, Devo, Rod Argent, David Bedford, Lyn Berger, Dave Greenslade, OMD, Loaded, and Mixmaster Morris. This particular unit features an additional, unlabeled knob next to the pitch slider, which controls the modulation intensity on the VCO. When turned to its maximum value, it creates a "pulse-like" effect, producing an extreme pump sound wave. This unique modification enhances the synth's versatility and character.

The synthesizer is in very good condition, fully functional, and includes the bottom panel, which was removed only for photographing the circuitry and showcasing the clean internal workings. The only real sign of wear is the power cable is missing the grounding prong. Complete with the original manual, this vintage Cat synthesizer is a rare find for any enthusiast or collector."

We all love Alessandro Cortini - but Strega not so much?

"I've always been in a 'love / hate' relationship with Strega, where 'hate' is a figure of speech because I am actively working on not hating anything or anybody. Regardless, Strega is in my top 10 of all time favorite modules. With the announcement of Bruxa I noticed a lof of comments about Bruxa being just as mono as the Witch, and a more interesting call for help where Strega users just don't come anywhere Cortini's work - and some blame Strega for it (don't).

In this short 'essay', I checked out all videos I could find where Cortini does a Strega demo and found only one at Reverb.com. It's fascinating to see he ALWAYS uses the external input on three application examples.

Using Mr. Spock's logic I can safely speculate it's primarily designed as an FX processor. Sure I knew this, but I didn't get it. Sure there's a VCO, but Alessandro is using it to support whatever's coming in to create low drones, textures and fat saturated atmospheres. So I tried to plug in my guitar and noodled a bit with this new workflow in mind. If you don't have a guitar, try to get a kalimba in. You'll notice there's an abundance of FM paths you can use to influence the VCO and the Time/Filter/Delay/Feedback.

This video is not intended to change your mind about Strega. If you don't like it, that's perfectly OK. But if Cortini's work is part of the music you love most, it's a very convenient and easy way to get you in his 'zone'. He is definitely in there somewhere. And the ugly witch can be a beauty.
