The Florian Schneider Collection to Be Auctioned at JULIEN*S November 19

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via JULIEN*S

"THE FLORIAN SCHNEIDER COLLECTION

Auction to be held at Musician's Hall of Fame & Museum, Nashville, on November 19

An incredible collection of more than 450 artifacts from the life and career of Florian Schneider, co-founder of the pioneer electronic band Kraftwerk."

Pics and videos featuring some of the gear below, and his Lederhosen for good measure (thanks greg!).

Update: the post has been fully updated with all the synth related gear. This may just well be the longest post to be featured on the site. I wanted to capture all the pics for all of the details including notes, scuffs, and of course serial numbers. It's an interesting look into what he used, the condition he keped his gear, in some cases, how he actually used his gear. Note the phonetics on the keys of the Casio CZ-101 and DX-100. Note the Midi Switch Box with a built-in speaker? What's that about? Note the camouflage key strap on the Korg RK-100 Remote Keyboard. Did he pick it out himself or did the keytar just come with it? Note the repeat midi controllers and the MIDI saxaphones. Wind was his primary instrument. You'll find a ton of the acoustic gear he used in the other listings. This is a fascinating insight into both what and how he used his gear.

Side note: there is no affiliate compensation for this post. The note at the top automatically shows for all posts with the Auction label.

Rack Mount Sennheiser VSM-201 Vocoder

Starting Bid $5,000

Estimate $20,000 - $40,000 USD

A late 1970s Sennheiser VSM 201 Vocoder with no serial number from the personal studio and collection of Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk (see images). While it’s said that only a few dozen of these Vocoders were produced, a few examples made it into the hands of forward-thinking musical artists including Herbie Hancock, Daft Punk, and of course, Kraftwerk, who used a VSM-201 like this on their albums Man Machine (1978) and Computerworld (1981). The VSM-201 has an intelligible sound that has not yet been bested by modern gear. Includes power cable. This VSM-201 has been removed from its wooden enclosure (which bears the serial number plate) and modified with a metal rack mount casing, presumably for live use. Requires 240v, IEC power cable not included.

Dimensions: 19 x 9 x 9 inches

Category: Kraftwerk, Equipment

Provenance: PROVENANCE From the Estate of Florian Schneider

The Vintage Synthesizer Museum Doc - A "Living Museum" where otherworldly sounds come to life!

video upload by Helium Vision

"In this episode of Helium Vision, we invite you into a world that hums with the strange and the beautiful—the Vintage Synthesizer Museum (VSM). Founded in 2013 by the avid synthesizer historian Lance Hill, this “living museum” exists in a space where the past and present come together to offer an immersive experience into the magical world of sound. It’s not just a museum—it’s a place where visitors and artists can disappear into their work, perform in a unique atmosphere, or learn the art of synthesis.

Initially opening its doors in Oakland the VSM is now nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, this space has since witnessed the presence of many modern visionaries—Damon Albarn, Egyptian Lover and Neurosis, to name a few—each leaving behind their own distinctive imprints.

Come with us, as we step into the otherworldly corners of the Vintage Synthesizer Museum and uncover the tales of the instruments that dwell within.

"Stunning 1969 Moog IIIc modular synth: two cabinets, two keyboards for sale in original condition on behalf of the owner.

In very good original/ex-factory condition with no modifications. The owner says "I'm the 2nd owner since it left NYC in the early 70's - all modules signed and dated - might need a service on the Filter Coupler but she is very tidy for 50 years old."

While it is in good working order for a 50+ year old synth, we would advise that a sympathetic service be carried out for future reliability."

"If you are looking for a brand new Model D still handcrafted by the Moog’s employee-owners in Asheville, this is probably one of a chance to get yourself a boxed unit. People who are checking this post may not be interested in going through the potential struggle of a vintage unit, nor want to support the InMusic Moog buy-out. Serial 2472, among the latest produced. It has always been in its box in my studio - a safe, temperature controlled room. No smoke and no pet. The instrument is unused as it came from Moog almost 10 years ago. I will test it before shipping it. This will not make it to the Sunday auction. You have only the first round to place your bid."

"Here's the original orange AXXE from my ARP collection — now enhanced with powerful and unique upgrades that set it apart from the rest, tailored by synth guru and ARP specialist Saint Eric. The keybed has been equipped with aftertouch - stepping into a Pro Soloist's territory! - easily one of the most expressive we've experienced on many synths we've had in our hands. It's really a joy to play: internally routed to the VCA and/or VCF, the AT pressure mechanism can be tastefully dialled using three front panel controls and has its own CV output too, for further control of external synths and modern-day modulars. This unit has a really characterful VCF which received the 4075 Timothy Smith filter upgrade. In addition to the external audio input for routing outboard signals to the VCF, on the rear panel you'll find a CV mix output which sums the keyboard, the sensitive PPC pads, the portamento and octave switches for controlling outboard synths. And you have a special variable CV output with two dedicated attenuators to adjust the scaling response, all controllable from the main panel, turning this synth into a powerful and unique analogue keyboard/CV controller. There is also a separate LFO CV output, very useful as the synth is modded to use the internal LFO and Sample & Hold in free-run mode just using a selectable switch. More useful and common modifications to this synth apart from the upgraded VCA and clean-audiopath improvements, are three different ADSR response modes: Fast, Normal & Slow via a three-position switch, A rich, powerful and extremely versatile analog. Cosmetics are just outstanding. Really impressive when you have it in front of you! It’s like travelling back through time: see the pics - notice on the left of the keyboard the nice touch that the original ARP badge imparts. It’s hard to let it go, but I know it deserves a new home in good hands. As a bonus, an ARP 70's logo T-shirt is also included on this listing. You'll provide the IEC power plug. [ If you’re purchasing from outside the EU, please be ready to provide any details that might be needed — thanks for understanding! ] Will be packed thoughtfully."

"We are delighted to present this Oberheim Xpander, a superb example of one of the most sophisticated analogue polysynths ever created.

Designed by Tom Oberheim’s team during the golden era of American analogue innovation, the Xpander represents the pinnacle of Oberheim engineering — a true hybrid masterpiece that marries the lush, organic depth of analogue oscillators with one of the most flexible modulation architectures ever implemented in a MIDI-equipped synthesizer.

Released in 1984, the Xpander was a technological tour de force, featuring six discrete voices, each effectively a complete monosynth, coupled to an extensive modulation matrix and multi-mode filters. Its sound palette remains legendary — capable of producing rich, evolving textures, weighty basses, and intricate soundscapes that continue to inspire composers, producers, and collectors alike."

DX7 & D-50 Dream Team | Ep.2 Electric Pianos & Strings

video upload by Espen Kraft

"When using a very transparent type of electric FM piano it can be very cool to have a dense, lush and saturated type of strings/pad underneath, pretty low in the mix.
The D-50 can do very nice thick and dense strings. Much more so than any analog synth which can also be nice, but analog isn't always the better solution.

For the second patch combo I use the TX802 for the more airy, blowing attack type of sound. Usually this is where the D-50 shines with its PCM attack samples, so it was fun to turn it around and create a cinematic timbre with D-50 filling out instead."

Get to grips with the Roland TR-1000 – Producer's Guide

video upload by MusicRadar Tech

"Unveiled earlier this month, Roland’s TR-1000 was always going to cause a stir. This flagship drum machine sits at the top of Roland’s line-up, with a top-end price to match. It’s the first Roland drum machine in more than 40 years to feature analogue sounds, with 16 circuits that mimic those of the iconic TR-808 and TR-909.

To focus solely on the TR-1000’s analogue elements would miss a lot of its highlights though. Alongside these sounds, Roland’s behemoth also features sampling, flexible effects, digital percussion sounds and a well-equipped, creative sequencer.

In our video, we explore the basics of the TR-1000 workflow and explain a few of our favourite creative features, including resampling, timestretching, the Morph crossfader and the master effects.

In this video, we’re using the TR-1000 alongside Erica Synths’ Bassline synth. The TR-1000 is sending MIDI clock to the Bassline sequencer, and the Bassline is routed into the TR-1000’s rear panel input and routed through the Master FX unit.

In this video:
01:40 – Sequencing basics
07:20 – Resampling a drum loop
19:17 – Drum layers
23:05 – Sub steps and probability
24:52 – FX routing

Synthesizing with Moog | Lesson 3: Vibrations

video upload by Moog Music

"Sound is a phenomenon of vibrations in the air. In this episode, we look at the source of vibrations on the synthesizer – the oscillator. We investigate how to tune the oscillator to a particular note and how to add oscillators together. We also dive into the topics of harmonics, looking at how the shape of oscillation creates distinct tones with different harmonic characteristics.

Written, hosted, filmed, and produced by our team of electronic musical instrument experts, this new seven-part educational video series makes learning the fundamentals of synthesis accessible, engaging, and inspiring for anyone curious about science, music, and how the two worlds converge. We set out to create a series that brings you as much technical knowledge as it does entertainment and joy as you watch each episode!
