Touché: Don Buchla’s Rare Polyphonic Keyboard Instrument

video upload by Sarah Belle Reid

Follow-up to Sarah Belle Reid plays the Buchla Touché

"In this video, I explore an extremely rare electronic instrument called the Touché, created by Buchla and Associates in 1980. Filmed at the Buchla Archives in Vancouver, this is a rare opportunity to hear and see an instrument that very few people have ever encountered firsthand. Only around five Touchés are known to have been built, and very few remain functional today. Because of this, the instrument has remained largely absent from public performance and documentation. This video helps bridge that gap by sharing the Touché’s sound, design, and historical context.

While Don Buchla is best known for his modular synthesizers such as the 100 and 200 Series, he also created a number of non-modular, computer-based instruments that explored new relationships between performance, software, and sound. The Touché is one such instrument. Conceived by Don Buchla in collaboration with composer David Rosenboom, it is a bi-timbral, eight-voice polyphonic keyboard instrument that combines digital sound generation, analog processing, and computer-mediated control.

The video begins with a historical overview of how the Touché grew out of Buchla’s computer-controlled instruments of the 1970s, including the 300 Series systems. From there, the video moves into a detailed walkthrough of Touché’s sound architecture, including many musical demos.
This video was created in collaboration with the Buchla Archives, an organization dedicated to the thorough and thoughtful documentation and preservation of Donald Buchla’s work.

Special thank you to Ryan Gaston and David Rosenboom for research assistance."

Nova Wind (1983)

video upload by David Rosenboom

"This video, shot informally in the Ensemble Room at Mills College in 1983, contains the only footage known of David Rosenboom playing his 1981 composition Nova Wind from Future Travel. In it, he plays the legendary Touché—digital/analog keyboard instrument produced in collaboration with Donald Buchla in 1979-1980—, violin, piano, and ancillary electronics. A complete studio recording of Future Travel was released first on a vinyl LP by Street Records in 1981 and later on a double-CD from New World Records in 2007."

Details on the New Knif Audio BBD

You might remember the quick demo of the Knif Audio 5U BBD Delay Demo posted back in September. New details are in:

BBD The analog delay to rule all analog delays

-Stereophonic analog bucket brigade delay with
-precision analog clock generators,
-variable frequency anti-alias and reconstruction filters for wide frequency response and -advanced companders and careful clock signal handling for high signal-to-noise ratio
-Superb-sounding tube distortion stage for the delay path with four NOS SQ pentode tubes
-Six 4096-step BBD ICs for 20ms-600ms (1200ms in mono) delay time
-Seven different operational modes, including X-fed feedback signals
-Versatile LFO
-Tempo divisions
-Tap tempo and external sync
-Beautiful, solid walnut housing and engraved and color-filled panels

Overview

Knif BBD is a stereophonic analog bucket brigade device (BBD) delay. It is a no-compromise device rich in features. What sets it far apart from any other device in the market are the unique self-adapting anti-aliasing and reconstruction filters which provide the widest possible frequency response for any given delay time setting without any aliasing.

The unit features in total six 4096-step BBD ICs which results in maximum delay time of 600 ms for a stereo signal and 1200 ms for a mono source. The device has got seven operational modes for different effects and comes with a wide range of control signal inputs and internal control possibilities. The unit features a microcontroller for relay switching and timing tasks such as tap tempo and time division. However the signal chain and clock generation are fully analog and built using state-of-the-art components.

The other very unique feature to the device is a vacuum tube distortion stage located before BBD circuits. It consists of four NOS Special quality pentodes in total. The amount of distortion is continuously adjustable without affecting the overall signal level. In addition to this, the spectrum of the distortion can be selected.

Ambient Soundscape with Generative Micro-Loops | Reconstructed 2026-01-20 by atnr

video upload by atnr

"This piece was created using the ‪@SequentialLLC‬ Prophet-10 and a self-developed ambient music generation software called Ambient Engine. Cut-up samples are transformed into micro-loops, forming an ambient soundscape layered with synth pads.

The Prophet-10 is played with reverb applied via ‪@strymon‬ blueSky.

Ambient Engine plays samples at both fixed intervals and random timings, processing them through a micro-loop effect, delay, and reverb before output. The samples include field recordings captured in urban areas and parks, as well as sounds from a Rhodes MKII."

Beetlecrab Tempera & Piano // DAY 16 #jamuary2026

video upload by Dexba

"First of all: what a beautiful light to let the canvas shine, right?
Second: what an intelligent piece of gear, the Tempera is. I am not even sure why I would call it that, but I feel it has an answer for almost everything (granular related, obviously) I could ask.
And I felt that from the instant I got it. It was probably one of the rare few times I decided to go through the manual before trying the instrument, and I feel that approach comes from the machine layout itself: we need to prepare the canvas before letting ourselves go with the painting process.
But I like this approach, it slows you down, helping you to think about your intentions with a specific emitter, even a specific color.
I started with the piano as a neutral input, and a simple drum track, using the brilliantly implemented Euclidean sequencer, and it's love already.
I hope you'll like it! 🧡"

FUTURE SOUND SYSTEMS CRIC

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this eBay listing

"Cric is a fully-analogue patchable synthesiser, designed to showcase our approach and attitude towards subtractive sound synthesis. It is not a clone or derivative of a pre-existing musical instrument, nor is it simply our Eurorack modules cased up in a box. Whilst some of Cric's functionality descends directly from our experience in designing modular synthesiser components, it has been designed as a fully fledged, standalone instrument, which can easily be introduced into an existing electronic music studio, or even form the heart of an entirely new set-up.

Rock solid voltage-controlled oscillators give the user both pitch precision and FM flexibility. A comprehensive filter section affords timbral sculpting from basic filtering to total transformation of incoming tones. Four cyclical function generators can be used as envelopes, LFOs or even audible VCOs. Pin matrix patching allows for the synthesiser to be configured as a standard triple-VCO subtractive synth, or a paraphonic synth, or a drum machine, or a noise box, and so the list goes on. Four inputs and outputs allow for audio processing, external CV control, feedback routing and more - there's even a microphone pre-amp on input 1. Steel casing, Mirrl -clad HIMACS end-cheeks and hand assembly and testing ensure a rugged and durable build quality.

Technical specifications:

Oscillators : Three SSI2131-based analogue VCOs in Recombination configuration, white noise generator
Filter : SSI2164-based 18dB/octave state-mixable analogue VCF, with wave-folding, based on the Timbral Sculptor
Dynamics : SSI2164-based VCAs present in DNA oscillators, filter section and as a standalone VCA
Modulation : Sample and hold + four cyclical function generators offering AD and ASD envelope configuation, cycle mode, and slope and pulse sources
Routing : 24 source x 32 destination active pin matrix allowing for splitting and summing of all signals
I/O : Four DC-coupled inputs and outputs for multi-channel audio and CV use. Microphone pre-amplifier assigned to In 1. Headphone amplifier on Out 1
Dimensions : 550 x 310 x 80 mm, 5.3 kg
Power : +12VDC (centre positive, 2.1mm barrel jack connector), 2.5A, PSU included"

FREE SYNTH: OSIRUS (Access Virus A/B/C Emulator) - No talking demo

video upload by ADL-MusicLab

"Hello, everyone!

Here's to you my 'No talking demo' of the amazing OSIRUS, a FREE software emulation of the Access Virus A/B/C by 'The Usual Suspects', which brings back to life these iconic synthesizers!

'The Usual Suspects' is a group of people who are currently Reverse Engineering and Emulating the DSP chip from original historic hardware synthesizers, which, in this case, is the Motorola DSP56300.

As is usual with The Usual Suspects releases, you’ll need to provide the original ROM, legally acquired, of course.

The architecture, signal flow, and character closely follow the original hardware, making this an absolutely faithful Access Virus A/B/C recreation in software form.

In this demo I will just let you hear what some amazing sound designers have made for this stunning plugin simply by scrolling and playing some beautiful sounds."

Diverse moods of Leviasynth / by Jexus.

"In 2025 Ashun Sound Machines contacted me and asked if I would like to create a set of unique presets for their upcoming synth. No details were disclosed about the instrument but, as you can imagine, I was curious. I agreed and several weeks later a monster 8-oscillator synth arrived at my doorstep. Today all of you can see it and hear it in action - the LEVIASYNTH is ready! Here's a quick video with some factory presets I created on the new Leviasynth. In this demo I kept the internal reverb low and did a fair amount of tweaking to give you a better idea of the timbre / behavior of the synth.

ASM Leviasynth | Sounds and Key Features | Synth Universe

video upload by Synth Universe

"A musical exploration of Leviasynth, Ashun Sound Machines’ successor to the Hydrasynth. Leviasynth is an 8 oscillator algorithmic synthesizer with analog and digital filters and five types of synthesis.

All the sounds featured in this video were created by me and are included in the Leviasynth factory presets (except Synfluctuate and PD keys which may be released by ASM as part of future banks). If you own or try out a Leviasynth, you can browse patches by sound designer and select Synth Universe to find all my sounds. Here I have often emphasized sounds that make use of the analog filter, showing the ability of Leviasynth to emulate analog synths, as this is one of the first things I want to know when assessing a hybrid synth. I also feature patches that highlight the other types of synthesis including FM and phase distortion.

This is a deep and powerful ‘monster’ of a synth and so far I have really only scratched the surface of its capabilities. There are too many features to list here so go to Ashun Sound Machines website to find out more.

Disclaimer: ASM sent me a pre-production unit for the purposes of sound design, but otherwise they had no input into the making of this video or the opinions expressed within.

No external enhancement or processing was applied to the sounds in this video: you are hearing them as output directly from the synth.

Note: Leviasynth does have a powerful arpeggiator and sequencer, but as they were still being finalized during the time I created these patches they are not featured in this video."
