90s Modular Synthesizer: Analogue Systems RS-8000 Sequence #Shorts

video by Elliott Liu

"Analogue Systems started in 1995 with Bob Williams starting production of a modular system. Unaware at the time, it was similar in size and power specification to the now standard Eurorack format.

Here I'm MIDI sequencing a 3 voices independently and controlling the balance of each of them."

Short one, but you don't see demos of the RS8000 often. Analogue Systems was part of the birth of the modular resurgance back when only a handful of manufacturers existed. AS and Doepfer were the first to produce 3U modules, although with different power schemes. Doepfer eventually became the standard and the eurorack format as we know it today was born.

Analogue Systems Modular Synth

In the beginning there were two eurorack formats, Doepfer and Analogue Systems. They used different power rail systems so although both were 3U eurorack, you couldn't intermix modules in the same system. You could however patch across them. Doepfer's system took off and the majority of other eurorack makers followed.

Rare Analogue Systems TH AS 48 Sequencer

"In the early 1990s, analogue sequencers were a bit like policemen and Number 25 buses - you could never find one when you wanted one. Then a whole bunch of them came along together. Doepfer Musikelektronik started the ball rolling in 1993 with the MAQ16/3 (although that was, strictly speaking, only analogue in style) to be followed by Analogue Systems, the company that is the brainchild of vintage synth expert and former collector, Bob Williams. Taking their lead from the TH48, numerous other analogue sequencers were released in the years that followed, so maybe it's time to look again at why this obscure piece of equipment, built using relatively primitive electronics and designed to seemingly obsolete principles, still attracts such devotion. Oh yes... and still attracts such significant wads of money."

Don't miss 9:18. The gentleman you see there, named Don, presented the ARP 2600 back in 1972 as well. So cool.

Analogue Systems EMS Synthi Filter Demo

Published on Dec 14, 2019 Roberto Raineri-Seith

"ANALOGUE SYSTEMS 'EMS SYNTHIFILTER' DEMO

A simple sequence of a single Depfer A-110-1 VCO with sawtooth waveform fed into the only officially licensed clone of the EMS filter built by Analogue Systems in collaboration with EMS.

Initially only the resonance is heard, then the VCO comes in, with on/offs of the soft/hard (fast/slew) slope with the filter set to 18db as in the original.

Delay is a TC Electronic D-TWO, reverb a Vermona DRS3 stereo spring reverb.

Recorded with a Tascam DA-3000 high-end digital recorder.

BTW this is also a demo of how one single VCO can sound unbelievable..."

Dave Smith & Dieter Doepfer at SUPERBOOTH 19

via @sequentialLLC

"#Superbooth19 with Dieter Doepfer!"

Two synth legends at this year's SUPERBOOTH. It's pretty amazing to think of the impact they have had in the world. Aside from creating incredible instruments, Dave brought us MIDI with Kakehashi from Roland in 1983, and Dieter brought back modular with the eurorack format in 1996. Analogue Systems worked in the same 3U format as eurorack, but with a different power system (some history on SOS here).

Euclidean Techno Experiment for SSC Kyma and Sherman Filterbank.

Published on Jan 12, 2019 Frequency Manipulator

"This is a test of my synthesised Kyma percussion, which is being sequenced using Euclidean divisions. The results are processed through the Sherman Filterbank, the ADSR envelope on the Sherman is also being triggered by Euclidean Rhythms generated by the Kyma.

The signal is then heavily limited by an 1176 clone in nuke mode.

The wibbly noises are an FM patch on the Analogue Systems Modular which also makes use of a Turing Machine to modulate various elements. This is also clocked from the Kyma.

A Visit to Noisebug - Synth Store | Interview

Published on Jan 4, 2019 Under the Big Tree

"I had a day left for my Christmas vacation before having to go back to work, and decided to spend it visiting a store that I had wanted to see for a long time: Noisebug in Pomona, California. Blake, the general manager and I chatted for a long time about all manner of esoteric synths and recording equipment, and then he was kind enough to give us a tour of the space. The results are a deep dive into a retail store that specializes in the finest quality synthesizers, whether Eurorack, 5U, Buchla, desktop, or keyboard. This is a must-see interview for the devotees of truly esoteric electronic music devices.

www.noisebug.net

Under the Big Tree is Nick Peck's YouTube channel, focused on music and sound design equipment and techniques, composition, production and performance of music, modular synthesizers and electronic music in general, and tabletop board games.

Some notes from watching the video: Elby Designs Pixie (EDP WASP synth - note Tinkerbell in place of a wasp) on the obscure front. BTW, Serge paperface refers to the original Serge panels from the 70s that had printed paper on the front panels. Radiohead used Analogue Systems. The power buss differs from Doepfer based eurorack. Ran out of label space with Moon Modular! 10 Year anniversary system featured. The Kilpatrick Audio K4815 Pattern Generator in Buchla format exclusive to Noisebug is featured.

French Connection

Published on Dec 6, 2018 theianboddy

"The Analogue Systems French Connection keyboard mimics the playing technique of the Ondes Martenot. The ring & wire control the pitch and the button on the left, in this instance, is controlling Volume, filter cutoff & PWM as well as the Morph X on the Morphing Terrarium.

The Roland System 500 is providing the main lead voice from the 510 module. The 555 module is doing the various CV modulations as well as the White Noise source. The dual filter 505 is treating the white noise & low drone. This drone is coming from the Synthesis technology Morphing Terrarium with Mutable Instruments Clouds providing the delay & reverb FX."
