Taming Lynch's Weirding Module

Published on Oct 6, 2013 davidryle·129 videos

"Okay, I don't really have a weirding module but I can make believe, right?

I did use a new module from Encore Electronics on this. It is the Frequency Shifter and has a pair of vco's (SSL 1200 & 1130) as well as an AM radio step sequenced through channels being processed by it.

Plenty of reverb and delays as usual. The feedback effects are mostly high pitched vco's through vca's but there are a few moments where the Modcan 73B Dual Delay is excited in it's resonant filter mode by some of the signals regenerating in series with the FS down feedback setting. It is an interesting patch with self generating feedback on certain frequencies from the radio and vco's. Sort'a like the Weirding effect - right? Maybe not. At least I don't really have to worry about replicating the weirding module as it was a stunt by Mr. Lynch for the movie. I am practicing my metal JuJu so I can become like the shadow mouse of the second moon. I won't need the modular synth to make music with at some point. Just my name."

A Progression of Angels

Published on Oct 2, 2013 davidryle·128 videos

"A new Encore Electronics Frequency Shifter prompted me to patch the modular synthsizer for this piece. This consists of a single vco (Synthetic Soundlabs 1200) with PWM from a Segwencer and CGS dual LFO. The pulse wave goes direct to the Encore FS and the Up and Down outs are routed to the Modcan 73B Dual Delay. The Frequency Shifter has a cv input from a Yusynth voltage controlled Quadrature LFO to make the bowed or pulsing sound.

The pitch voltage is from a synthesizers.com Q960 and Q119 sequencer pair. The Q960 is run into the Q119's ADD INPUT and the Q119 is shifted every 16th division of the Q960 by way of an SSL TTLFO and Moon Modular 554 Octal Divider. The divider also sends sync timings to the 73B delay

A final mix of the outputs of the FS are routed to the studio mixer through a panner and each channel is split off to a Strymon Blue Sky reverb. A final pair of reverbs are the Lexicon MX200 and TC Electronic D-Two.

Recorded in Cubase 6 and video processed by Apple Final Cut Pro."

Native Instruments introduces RAW VOLTAGE

"Berlin, July 23rd, 2012 – Native Instruments today introduced RAW VOLTAGE, a new MASCHINE Expansion which captures the sound of a huge modular synthesizer system. For instant use with MASCHINE or MASCHINE MIKRO, RAW VOLTAGE contains kits, instruments and patterns that share the unique, rich and organic sound characteristics of analog synthesis.

The sounds inside RAW VOLTAGE range from grainy, noisy and raw to sleek, cool and clinical. Sampled from a one-of-a-kind analog modular system, RAW VOLTAGE has a wide sonic scope, inspired in part by experimental and avant-garde electronica. The drum and percussion sounds are punchy, loud and direct, while the sampled basses, leads, pads and soundscapes are rich in detail and analog atmosphere. The expansion also includes 140 expertly-programmed patterns, providing a wide selection of styles from broken, jagged rhythms to steady, flowing grooves.

RAW VOLTAGE is designed to evoke the sound and character of modular analog synthesis inside MASCHINE, combining these unmistakable sounds with the renowned MASCHINE production workflow. The kits and instruments provided cross genre boundaries to inject analog feel into any musical project – from techno to hip-hop, electronica and beyond.

RAW VOLTAGE is based on a unique custom modular system used and created by Norwegian synthesis expert Roger Grønberg (Frodebeats). The system includes modules from Modcan, MOTM, Oakley, CGS, STG, Encore, Buchla plus many unique custom and DIY modules, as well as analog synthesizers like Arp Odyssey/2600 and Korg MiniKorg 700s.

A compact version of RAW VOLTAGE is also available for iMASCHINE – the groove sketchpad for iPhone® / iPod Touch®.

RAW VOLTAGE is available at the NI Online Shop for $59/49 EUR. For owners of iMASCHINE, a compact version of RAW VOLTAGE is also available via the iMASCHINE in-app store for $0.99/0,79 EUR.

Waldorf Q Voice Expansion Clone Project

via Chase:

"I have been looking for voice expansion modules for my Q-Rack, they are hard to find now and the Waldorf distributors are tapped out.

I found a company in the US called Encore Electronics that is willing to produce a lot of 50 or more of these units, but there are 4 caveats:

1- Confirmed 50-100 or more buyers

2- A Q synthesizer and an expansion module to reverse engineer.

3- Development lead time of about 3 months.

4- Module price is estimate around $375.

You may provide your First Name, last initial and location to confirm if you are interested.

Please specify if you are interested in temporarily donating an expansion module (I don't have one), I will be temporarily donating my only Q Rack if there is enough demand to take this to the next step.

Also, if you know a Q or XT owner interested in a voice expansion, send them over to this post to throw in their 2 cents.

If anybody knows some other forums for Q users to get the word out on this please let me know where else to post - any suggestions are welcome.

Survey and status is posted here if you are interested or wish to contribute:

Oberheim OBX Synthesizer with Encore MIDI

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction
"Oberheim OBX, 8 voice synthesizer with Encore midi. One of the legendary monsters of analog. The Encore midi gives it 120 programs instead of the original 32 in most OBX synthesizers. The paint and finish is in very good condition, beautiful for a synth this old, though there are some nicks here and there as will most vintage items. It was a 4 voice which was upgraded to 8 voices and the Encore midi added. Notice it has the large sequencer socket to the upper left of the Encore midi board. This is for plugging in a compatible ribbon cable to connect with an Oberheim DSX sequencer. The color scheme is the later darker grey color with the grey blocks on the mod panel..."

Oberheim OBX 6 Voice SN 806508

via this auction on eBay Austria.

"In 1978 Oberheim presented the OBX polyphonic synthesizer.

It has a very organic, warm and powerful sound, much richer than it’s later versions, OBXa and OB8. This is probably because of it’s discrete circuitry design of the voiceboards, only the ENV’s were made with Curtis CEM3310 IC’s.

The OBX is probably one of the best sounding analog synths ever made, the sound is very close to the legendary Oberheim SEM.

This particular instrument has been restored by the previous owner and a lot of the typical OBX problems have been solved.
Power supply caps and most of all other caps have been changed, some of the trimmers and molex connectors overworked, cleaned and checked.

It also has been upgraded with an Encore Midi Upgrade (In, Out, Thru). The Midi kit is not available at Encore electronics anymore..."

Encore electronics universal event generator eurorack

via this auction
"The Encore Universal Event Generator is a 30HP Euro Rack compatible module designed to be a versatile and useful addition to an already great modular system. The UEG can be used as an envelope generator, a complex LFO, or as a step sequencer.

Eight stages are provided with adjustable time and level for each stage, and they each have an LED which indicates the relative voltage output for that stage.

The left switch controls the major modes of the UEG. LOOPONLY mode will force the UEG to cycle between the loop points. This is essentially an LFO.

ONESHOT mode will cycle through all eight stages once, regardless of the duration of the gate input.

GATED allows a new set of options controlled by the second switch. In this mode, the module will start the envelope when it receives a gate, but it will also loop as long as the gate is held. Once the gate is released, there are two ways for the envelope to end. In RELEASE mode, the UEG will complete the current stage, then jump immediately to stage 8.

In FINISH LOOP mode, it will simply complete all the stages before stopping.

The left position of the second switch is the STEP mode. In this mode, the UEG takes on a whole different personality: it becomes a step sequencer! It will advance through the 8 stages for each positive pulse on the GATE input.

The START and END loop switches allow the UEG to start a "loop" anywhere from stages 2 through 4, and end the loop between stages 5 and 7. These are used in LOOPONLY mode and in GATED mode.

The output waveform can have one of three slopes: linear, log, and step. These are shown graphically on the front panel.

The UEG also has a MANUAL GATE button, useful to trigger the UEG while setting it up."

What a Polyphonic Arp 2600/Macbeth M5/Minimoog would sound like

YouTube Uploaded by ricel1992 on Jan 2, 2012

"Hooked up my mono synths with my Encore Expressionist and recorded a little video to show of the sound. I had the Acidlab Miami triggering the ARP Sequencer which was sequencing the filter cutoff (making that rhythmic sound in the background). The glidey/squelchy bass is the minimoog model D and the 4 voice poly is made up of the 2 ARP 2600's and 2 voices from the Macbeth M5 - osc 1 and 3 through filter 1 and oscillator 2 through filter 2. It makes for a rather unsurprisingly fat sound and the expressionist makes it really easy to set everything up (I just need some more long 1/4 cables)! The Acidlab Miami was the drum accompaniment. Anyways, hopefully I can record more soon."

Tele-Modo - Modular synth guitar experiment

YouTube Uploaded by doctorvague on Jul 8, 2011

"Fernandes Tele into HK Tubeman into El Capistan into STG Wavefolder into Hordijk Dual Phaser. Korg Monopoly arp plays the modular, I didn't use the Monopoly audio at all. Also used Modcan VCDO and DDL, Encore UEG, , MOTM 440 filter, Synthesizers.com EG, 2 Oscillators (one as LFO) and output mixer. Moon Modular 563 trigger sequencer as master of everything-- the arpeggiator, EG, UEG (used as voltage sequencer) and delay time. Mixed in real time with live effects, no edits, although maybe I should have.

Why "Experiment"? In this case it's a euphemism for "I'm pretty sure parts of this are pretty questionable but it took a whole day to render the got-dang thing so I'm posting it anyway." I thought the 2-camera overlap came out pretty cool though, especially with the all-you-can-eat cable spaghetti festival where they overlap. Oy vey I should be so lucky to have that many patch cables."

Barking Spiders - modular synth improv

YouTube Uploaded by doctorvague on Jun 24, 2011

"Modular being fed by 2 voices from Numerology software. MOTM 650 MIDI-CV converter and 440 filter, Hordijk Dual Phaser (featured heavily, lower right), Modcan VCDO and DDL, Moon Modular 563 trigger sequencer, DIY switcher, STG Wavefolder, Encore UEG, and Synthesizers.com 107 filter, slew limiter, 2 EG's, 2 osc (one as LFO) and mixer. All sounds originate from the Modcan VCDO and one synthesizers.com Q106 oscillator into a Suit and Tie Guy wavefolder. I'm using the wonderful Hordijk Dual Phaser in lowpass mode more than phaser mode as I find the sounds a lot more interesting."
