YouTube via RolandChannel

"World’s First AA Battery-Driven Portable Stereo Amplifier for Keyboardists

Los Angeles, CA, March 10, 2010 — The latest addition to Roland’s industry-leading KC-Series keyboard amplifier lineup, the KC-110 Stereo Keyboard Amplifier, is now shipping. It combines two industry firsts for a portable keyboard amp—AA battery-powered operation and true stereo sound—with a host of additional features that make it flexible for a variety of performance applications.

The KC-110 features 30 watts of stereo power driving two 6.5" woofers and two tweeters. Most modern keyboards feature stereo sound output, and the KC-110 enables musicians to experience the full, rich stereo sound of their instruments while using a small amp. Power can be supplied with eight AA batteries (including NiMH rechargeable types) or AC power, and there’s even a removable battery case for quick and easy battery replacement.

Featuring a multi-channel mixer with a Mic/Line input, two stereo inputs, and two AUX inputs for connecting devices such as MP3 or CD players, this versatile amplifier is suitable for compact PA applications as well as keyboards. High-quality stereo digital effects are also built in, allowing performers to sweeten their sound with reverb, chorus, or a special “wide” chorus effect.

Compact size, battery operation, and superb stereo sound make the KC-110 the perfect portable keyboard amp for nearly any playing situation, from primary amplification duty in intimate settings such as coffee houses, restaurants, or street performances to personal monitoring on large stages. The KC-110 also features an integrated tilt stand for enhanced sound projection, as well as a pole mount for use with the optional ST-A95 Speaker Stand when maximum coverage is needed.

The KC-110 is now shipping with a suggested retail price of $469.00.

New KORG GROOVEBOX Renders

This one in via Chrome. Likely not real and just a rumor, as KORG has been focused on the new KORG MS20 Mini and KingKORG synths. The design is more a throwback to the Roland TB series which KORG has not done in the past.   Why copy Roland when they have their own vintage designs. There are no teasers on the KORG site. You can find the latest KORG press releases here.

New pics:

Pics are via techhouse.sk - technika pre DJs a producentov za najlepšie ceny on Facebook

And more:

So we have the the Volca Keys, Volca Bass, and Volca Beats. The style is definitely looking more KORG than Roland in these new pics. Electribe and Monotron knobs, black cases and vintage orange KORG logo on the Volca Beats, & gold on black keys.  Could these actually be real?  If so, KORG have been some very busy bees...

Update 4/10/2013:  They are real and only $150 each:

"volca Keys - Analogue Loop Synth

volca Bass - Analogue Bass Machine

volca Beats - Analogue Rhythm Machine

Three true-analog synthesizers with built-in sequencers to generate the ultimate analog leads, basses, and rhythms

Following in the footsteps of the monotron, monotribe, and MS-20 Mini analog synthesizers, Korg announces the volca series. volca is a new lineup of EDM production tools comprised of three distinct models: the volca Keys lead synthesizer, the volca Bass synthesizer, and the volca Beats rhythm machine. These powerful and fun-to-use true-analog devices deliver a diverse array of fat sounds that can be obtained only from an analog synthesizer. Each is also equipped with sequencing/recording capabilities for intuitively generating performances. Multiple volcas can be used in tandem via the vintage-style sync in/out, and with your favorite DAW software or MIDI keyboard via MIDI In. Battery operation and built-in speakers mean that you can conveniently play anywhere and anytime. These are the next-generation analog synthesizers, bringing you the ultimate sounds and grooves with ease and depth. Whether used together or by themselves, the volca series is poised to inject true analog power into any performance or studio setup!

SYNC jack and MIDI IN connector allow synchronized performance with multiple units or with your DAW
By using the sync jack you can enjoy synchronized playback with multiple volcas or with a monotribe. You can also use the "SyncKontrol" iPhone app to wirelessly control tap tempo, swing settings, and synchronized playback with iOS music apps via WIST.

The MIDI IN connector lets you synchronize with other devices, as well as play the volca from any MIDI keyboard. You can also send note messages from your DAW and use the volca as an analog sound module.

Self-tuning function (volca Bass and Keys only)
Until now, the problem with analog synthesizers has been that the pitch would drift over time, or because of changes in temperature. Volca solves this by providing a Self-tuning function that constantly tunes the oscillators. You'll never need to tune during a performance, or wait for the pitch to stabilize after turning the power on.

Compact size, battery-powered operation, and built-in speaker for enjoyment anywhere
With its compact size, battery operation, and built-in speaker, it's easy to take the volca anywhere and perform any time.

Although simple in structure, the analog sound engine has an unmistakable presence with subtle nuances that cannot be reproduced by a digital simulation; it's a great choice for acid house and many other styles of music. The step sequencer distilled from the Electribe is not only visually intuitive; it's also a powerful way to generate "free form" bass loops that will stimulate your inspiration.

volca Beats Analogue Rhythm Machine

Peerless beats generated by solid analog drum sounds and an Electribe-style sequencer

Powerful analog drum sounds
Real analog sounds created with reference to classic rhythm machines
Six editable analogue parts with one knob per function for easy editing
Maximum effect from minimal parameters - a unique advantage of analog
PCM sound engine expands possibilities when used with analog sounds
Loop sequencer distilled from the Electribe series
Electribe-style 16-step sequencer with eight memory patches
Stutter function generates repeated triggers that dramatically change the sequence
Active Step function generates new bass lines by removing or inserting steps.
Step Jump function instantly plays only the step you're pressing
Convenient functions for incredible ease of use
Sync In and Out allows clock sync of multiple instruments from the volca Series as well as Korg's Monotribe
MIDI In for note entry, plus external sync and control from your DAW
Go-anywhere analogue: play anywhere with the built-in speaker and optional battery power
Even today, more than thirty years after the age dominated by analog synthesizers, we just can't let go of the sound of analog rhythm machines. Those thick sounds have the power to stand up to guitar and acoustic drums, and are still indispensable for track-making or live performance. The volca Beats gives you those analog drums plus the easy-to-use step sequencer of the Electribe; it lets you turn your inspiration into reality and generate beats with the best high quality sounds.

Update2 1/10/2013: The official Press Release:

"Korg Announces the Volca Series of Analog Synthesizers

-True-analog synthesizers with built-in sequencers are designed
to generate the ultimate analog leads, basses, or rhythms-

Musikmesse, Frankfurt, Germany, April 10th, 2013 - Korg USA has announced the Volca series of portable, true-analog synthesizers. Following in the footsteps of the Korg Monotron, Monotribe, and the MS-20 Mini synth, these next-generation true-analog instruments offer on-the-go sounds and grooves along with MIDI functionality. The series is comprised of three models: the Volca Keys lead synthesizer; the Volca Bass synthesizer; and the Volca Beats rhythm machine.

All models provide carefully selected parameters that allow users to create the distinctive, massive sounds that can only come from a true analog synthesizer. Each instrument features a loop sequencer for intuitively generating and recalling phrase-based performances. Multiple Volcas can be used in tandem thanks to vintage-style sync in/out, or with the user's DAW software via MIDI In. Convenient, optional battery operation and built-in speakers provide the ability to play anywhere at any time.

The Volca Keys represents a new chapter in Korg's long history of analog synthesizers. This 27-key analog lead synth generates sound that's more powerful than its compact, low-profile body would suggest. Its three oscillators can be tuned against each other in a variety of ways-from one part unison to three-part chords-to provide the versatility needed to create a diversity of sounds. With a filter section that utilizes the circuitry of the classic miniKORG700S (1974) plus an easy-to-use interface that includes delay effects and a 16-step sequencer, Volca Keys offers the richly expressive sounds that are distinctive of an analog synth, and combines the enjoyment of basic sound creation with deep functionality.

The Volca Bass is an analog bass line groove box that's capable of generating a wide range of bass lines. Though basic in structure, the analog sound engine has an unmistakable presence with subtle nuances that cannot be reproduced by a digital simulation, making it ideally-suited for acid house and many other styles of electronic music. Its step sequencer-distilled from Korg's Electribe series-offers a convenient, visually intuitive way to generate "free form" bass loops to stimulate inspiration. The three oscillators can be combined in several ways via a voicing function, to generate a variety of thick and modulated bass sounds.

The Volca Beats offers six fat analog drum sounds: Kick, Snare, Hi Tom, Lo Tom, Closed Hi Hat, and Open Hi Hat. It contains a wide array of sound variations that could not be produced by any means other than analog, with special emphasis on the sounds that are considered indispensable for dance music. A PCM sound engine is also included for generating clap, crash and others sounds that are better suited for PCM. Simple knob-based parameters can be used to quickly create a variety of drum sounds. For example, simply by using the three knobs (Click, Pitch, and Decay), a variety of kick sounds can be crafted, ranging from rough sounds that dominate the low range to tight sounds that keep a precise beat. In addition, a 16-part sequencer is included to easily add or remove parts.

The Volca series will be available in July 2013 for a U.S. street price of $149.99 each. Additional product information is available at Korg.com"

Sequential Circuits TOM Drum Machine with Data Cartridge SN 01024

via this auction

"The TOM Digital Drum Machine includes 8 basic drum kit sounds: kick, snare, 2 toms, open / closed hat, clap and crash. The Sequential Circuits Tom had an interesting feature for an early drum machine; each sound could be dynamically allocated between the voices, so you could even use 4 copies of the same sound simultaneously. Other features include the ability to play the sounds backwards, MIDI controllable parameters and support for sound cartridges, which let you add 7 additional samples to the 6 built-in rock drum kit samples. Included with this TOM is the rare “Latin Percussion” expansion sound cartridge.

TOM's sequencer allows you to record rhythm patterns in real time or step time. It can store up to 99 patterns and each pattern can be up to 99 measures! As many as 99 patterns can be linked to form Songs. Sequencer memory holds 2,300 notes. The TOM also featured an "Improv Factor" to create drum fills which can add variation to your patterns. TOM's "Human Factor" allowed you to program minor changes in the tuning and volume of your patterns for a 'humanzied' feel - before that term existed in the sequencing lexicon. The TOM also had a "Reframe" function that let you change the location of the down-beat in your pattern at the touch of a button. The TOM has a drum-pad-programmable trigger out which allows it to synch with pre-midi sequencers and arpeggiators in keyboards such as the Roland SH-101.

The TOM's memory is retained via internal battery backup when powered down. Program memory can also be saved/loaded to casette tape.

I have “modded” this TOM to use a single AA battery, rather than the expensive and hard to find lithium backup battery. A lithium backup battery can still be used, if preferred, but one is not included with this TOM. The AA battery will retain the program memory for 6 months to a year."

Korg Announces New Electribe MUSIC PRODUCTION STATION

Published on Sep 3, 2014 KORGINC

"Korg Announces the Next Generation of the Electribe Music Production Station

MELVILLE, NEW YORK, September 4th, 2014 --- Empowering musicians to compose in a creative and influential way, the new Electribe has evolved to include such features as polyphonic synth playback, sixteen freely-assignable parts, and compatibility with Ableton Live. Featuring sixteen back- lit Trigger pads and an intuitive X/Y Touch pad, the new Electribe is easy enough for a beginner to understand, yet sophisticated enough to satisfy even the most experienced performers. Due to its sleek, compact design and battery power (optional AC adapter available), users can easily compose and play any style of electronic music, no matter where they are. In addition to making some of the world’s most popular synthesizers, Korg has a long history of captivating electronic dance musicians. From the revolutionary KAOSS line, to the Legacy virtual instruments, to the original Electribe Music Production Stations, Korg has given producers the tools they need to make music that inspires.

The new Electribe’s synthesis includes 409 waveforms, covering analog modeling and sample playback. The advanced analog modeling is distilled from the KingKORG synthesizer, and includes filters that model those of classic analog synthesizers. The synth engine is capable of unison, sync, ring modulation, cross modulation, and much more. The PCM portion provides numerous rhythmic samples, but also includes some multi-samples for keyboard input. Collaborations with Sample Magic, Loopmasters, and Prime Loops are also included in the Electribe.

The Electribe’s evolved step sequencer allows the player to create patterns while receiving visual feedback and instantly hearing the set changes. The pads can function as a chromatic keyboard for real-time input, or as a traditional step sequencer. The “Motion Sequence” function records knob and button operations, and plays them back to create smooth or stepped modulation and other effects. The X/Y Touch pad has several functions, such as a Kaossilator-style “Touch Scale,” which plays a scale when the player slides a finger across the pad. It can also control effects and modulation sources. Effects such as compression and overdrive are provided for each part, allowing each of the sixteen available parts to have their own sonic signature. Groove templates can also be specified for each part. Live performance is more intuitive than ever, due to the “Pattern Set” function which allows the player to instantly switch patterns by pressing the Trigger pads.

Based on a partnership with Ableton, the new Electribe features the ability to export Ableton Live clips, enabling a direct link between Electribe production and one of the world’s most popular DAWs. In addition to MIDI IN/OUT, Sync IN/OUT jacks are provided, allowing synchronized performances with the Volca series, Monotribe, or MS-20 Mini. This newest edition to the Korg family will certainly impress even the most profound musicians."

Suzuki Portachord Tronichord

via this auction

"Also Known as 'Tronichord' model pc-27

This is the "original" omnichord (well, it was the beginning of the evolution of the omnichord). This is the first of it's kind, and it then led to the future production of the Omnichord which has more features/options.

I sent this to Suzuki to have the power source modified. Being that this is from the late 70's, the battery compartment had a very old terminal for AA batteries. I could barely get today's AA batteries to fit in, and when they did, they were almost impossible to get them back out. The connection was also undependable and the batteries often felt hot. So about a year ago, I sent it to Suzuki and "Franz"(I guess he is known as the omnichord guy) replaced the AA terminal with a 9-volt. This is much more convenient for quickly swapping batteries out if you were to play it on stage. The battery life seems to be unaffected by replacing the AA's with one 9-volt. Franz from Suzuki thought, if anything it might last longer. He tested it for 4 hours and said it still played(battery didn't die)... After being serviced, the battery door hasn't stayed on as well as it used to..."

#16operators Pocket Operator Community Challenge Jam (+Free Samplepack)

video by Perplex On

"I had the great pleasure to contribute some samples and this jam for the #16operators community project, where 16 artists from all genres submitted own samples which were compiled into one fine sample pack for all PO133 and PO33. Each artist got the final pack and jammed with it. Super exciting to hear the wide range of results all based on the same pack. A big thank you goes out to @AA Battery for starting and finalizing this project! Check out his channel for a video of all submissions, it’s spectacular. [You can find his #16operators video below]

"The idea to make a samplepack for the @teenageengineering Pocket Operator PO-33 KO (or PO-133 Street Fighter) with 16 diverse samples grew in me and I thought I’d ask some PO-Masters in the community to provide me 1 sample. After the pack was complete, they each made a jam with it to see how diverse the outcome is given the same source material. Really amazing!

Introducing the new Stylophone CPM DS-2 Analog Drone Synthesizer

video upload by Stylophone

Press release follows:

"Introducing the Stylophone DS-2 Analog Drone Synthesizer, the first release in Stylophones new pro-audio Compact Portable Modular (CPM) range.

With two analog drone voices, filter cutoff and volume knobs for evolving and fading drones in and out. The Ultra LFO provides internal rhythmic modulation that enables dynamic waveform blending of the two analog oscillators and cadenced movement of the multimode filters.

Keep things musical by linking the pitch of the two analog oscillators to ensure everything stays harmoniously in tune, or hard sync them for even wilder sounds. Sonic vibes are further enhanced with the in-built vintage modulated delay as well as the option to add one of the eight vintage-inspired reverb algorithms.

This portable, stand-alone drone synth, doesn’t require any external connections to other equipment in order to make endless soundscapes, pulsating rhythms, and cosmic exploration.

Integration with studio and Eurorack equipment is possible through the twelve patch points as well as the ability to route signals to multiple places simultaneously for extra processing with the built-in speaker and headphone connection. Run sound sources from anything into the Aux input to take advantage of the built-in effects, creating a single hub for your music creations.

Use either mains, AA battery operation or mount it within a Eurorack case to play it anywhere. The Stylophone CPM DS-2 Analog Drone Synthesizer is an ideal companion for those seeking innovation in sound creation in the studio, on stage or on the go.

The Modal Electronics Modal CRAFTsynth

It looks like Modal Electronics, makers of the Modal 002 and 008 line of flagship synth, is coming out with a new compact mini desktop synth. This comes as no surprise as one of the men behind Modal Electronics is Paul Maddox of Vaco Loco. I'm not seeing anything on their site yet.

Here are some details via Synth Anatomy:

"Easy Self-Assembly

The Modal CRAFTsynth Monophonic Synthesizer Kit allows you to build up the synthesizer from 5 separate boards, with its simple yet effective design making it easy to assemble. The assembly process requires no soldering, tools or specialist knowledge, everything you need comes straight out of the box and allows you to slot the pieces together with ease. You can assemble the synthesizer within 10 minutes, giving you a hands-on experience when it comes to building your synth.
Powerful Monophonic Performance

The CRAFTsynth features 2 oscillators per voice with a range of controls for in-depth manipulation such as detune and fine detune for OSC 2 as well as a selection of different waveforms including: Sine, Tri, Saw PWM, Noise and FM (OSC2 modulates pitch of OSC1). This versatile range of controls allows you to sculpt your own synth sounds with ease. The LFO features six destinations in total including: VCA amplitude, filter cutoff, FM amount, OSC mix, PWM amount and pitch/frequency. This wide range of parameters allows you to create your own sounds with extreme precision, giving you in-depth control over every part of the sound. There is also a mixer stage of OSC levels, allowing you to further edit your sound for added depth and clarity. The Unison/Spread mode splits the oscillators into four separate sub oscillators per oscillator, virtually expanding your synth to a total of eight oscillators which are also de-tunable for a massive sound. The Modal CRAFTsynth is also fully class compliant, meaning it can be controlled by a wide range of popular DAWs, offering seamless integration for your favourite programs and applications.
LFOs and Presets

The Modal CRAFTsynth features four LFO wave forms in total, with each LFO being invertible for added versatility. The LFO wave forms are as follows; Sine, Tri, Saw, Square. This standard range of LFOs allows you to create everything from atmospheric pads to in-your-face leads and more. The resonant low pass filter can become state variable when using the CRAFTapp (available end of 2016). The CRAFTapp that comes included with the synthesizer allows you to get in-depth with your synthesis, giving you the ability to control custom enveloped, low pass filters and more.
Intuitive Layout

The highly intuitive layout of the Modal CRAFTsynth places everything you need right at your fingertips. The eight front panel potentiometers offer unparalleled editing control with two pages of editing functionality, allowing you to control parameters with precision. The CRAFTsynth also features 16 path storage locations (expandable through CRAFTapp) as well as 16 recallable EG presets for ease of use (full editing control with CRAFTapp). The playable touch panel interface features five note keys plus controls for scale and glide time. The touch panel interface’s keys are clearly labelled with its primary function giving you the ability to change between scales and more. Delay and distortion effects are also included for adding harmonics and texture to your sound. A Headphone and Line output are included for direct monitoring as well as outputting the CRAFTsynth to speakers and other audio devices. The synthesizer itself is powered via a USB cable or an optional AA battery pack.

Modal CRAFTsynth specification:

Monophonic DSP based self assembly synthesiser, requires no soldering or electronics skills, tools or knowledge

BOSS DR-220A LIPO-BATTERY MOD

Robin Sutcliffe wrote in to let us know of a battery mod he completed for the BOSS DR-220A. You can find full details and additional pics for the mod here.

"Last year I bought a DR-220A (A=analogue; the drum set samples, E=electronic) It's a beefy drum machine for it's size, I really enjoy it. With programming the accent and (closed hat cuts off open hat) , you can program some quite swingy beats, even though it's all quantized on the 16th. Also useful (to me) is the trigger in/out functions, where you can step a sequencer, arpeg, or LFO retrigger (anything that accepts a trigger) with the RIM shot in playback mode. (so not just by tapping the RIM shot pad)

The battery compartment had been cleaned up after some obvious leakage and corrosion. This meant that the contacts did not hold well against the batteries themselves, and presets were not saved, even with batteries in the device! Obviously this also meant intermittent performance on battery power.

I decided to replace the 6 AA cells with a 3.7v Lipo battery, charge board, and boost circuit. The boost circuit is needed to take the 3.7v up to 6v needed for operation of the 220A."

You can find 3.7v Lipo batteries on Amazon here, and
via this auction. Be sure to get to the right size.

Battery Powered TR-707 With Interchangeable TR-808 and TR-909 EPROMs

TR-707 Battery-powered with quick-swappable EPROM sounds

YouTube via rolandsh1000

"I think the 707 has some definite things going for it: great interface, lightweight, individual outs, onboard sound mixer pots, solid trigger outs. However, the things I always thought were odd were that it wasn't battery powered (such a lightweight chassis...why not?), and the sounds were good but not great (probably better than the 505 and 626, but the stepsister to the 808, 909, and possibly 606).

So this mod tries to fix both of those:

The first part is battery-power. I have an internal array of 10 AA cells that can be switched in and they'll power the unit for at least 10 hours. I use rechargeable NiMH cells for environmental friendliness. This enables sitting on the couch jamming with headphones and no wall wart leash!

The second part is a ZIF eprom socket mounted on the front panel where the M64-C memory cartridge used to go (something I know that I would never ever have used). This is wired into IC34 and IC35 on the voice board, which provide the ROM samples for all the drums except the crash and ride. Since IC34 and IC35 were 27c256 sized ROMs in parallel, they can be replaced with a single 27c512 64k ROM, which I've done here. No credit to me: Thierry on the Yahoo TR-707 group figured this out and posted his methods there for adding new sounds. To burn my own sounds, I got the WAVs from Hyperreal for the 808 and 909, downsampled them to ~22kHz and 8-bit, converted them to binaries, then adapted Thierry's BASIC program that organizes all the sounds into on 64K file per their stock organization in the TR-707.

This video shows me running from battery power (the only thing I plug in is the amp). I run through the exact same patterns using sounds first from a 27c512 EPROM with the stock 707 binaries, then my converted 808 EPROM kit, then finally a 909 EPROM kit (I didn't like how that last one turned out...anybody know of better sources for 909 sounds?).

I suppose doing the crash and ride eproms are next!"
