Patchwerks Seattle Eurorack Videos

Quick note: Patchwerks is a new sponsor of the site. You'll find their banner on the right. As the title of this post states they are based out of Seattle. They are a synthesizer shop that hosts synth meets in the Pacific Northwest. You can find them at https://patchwerks.com. Additional posts coming up! :)

Playlist:

1. Øchd: Overview and Demo
Welcome to the Patchwerks video series! In this inaugural video of our series, our resident expert Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) demos the amazingly simple and musically powerful features from the new DivKid module øchd. Remember to like and subscribe, because we'll have more videos of great gear coming your way soon.

From DivKid:
This collaboration between DivKid and Instruo is a 4HP all analogue triangle LFO generator with 8 outputs. Each of the 8 outputs are free running and are musically tuned intervals, as opposed to synced or variable phase outputs from each other. A range of fast to slow outputs can be set to make any patch drift organically and beautifully, letting your modulation freely drift various parameters. There's a global rate control to go up into either lower audio rates on the fastest outputs, or glacially slow. A CV input with attenuverter allows for waveshaping via feedback patching, everything from log, lin or expo curves through to odd staircases waves and more. A negative voltage can reliably halt the circuit which gives 8 track and holds over the outputs.

2. Earthquaker Devices Afterneath in stereo!?
In this video we patch the Earthquaker Devices Reverb: Afterneath into the Make Noise Rosie to take advantage of the mono to stereo send. Doing this allows us to patch a second audio output from the reflect send into the right input of the stereo return giving us a stereo reverb effect.

From Earthquaker:
The Afterneath Eurorack Module brings the Otherworldly sounds from the effects pedal world right into your modular synthesizer with an expanded feature set. The Afterneath module features one main audio input, one main audio output, an audio send and return for the Reflect feedback path, and nine controls. Four of the parameters are controllable via CV, and each has been equipped with a dedicated attenuverter to process the incoming CV. The Afterneath module has a completely analog dry signal path and a totally digital wet signal path.

Patchwerks - Community Hub & Music Store Fundraiser

You can find the GoFundMe here.

Patchwerks is more than a synth shop. They host local synth events in the Seattle area, share performances online, publish tutorial videos, and help promote artists [many featured here on MATRIXSYNTH]. Now they need some help on their end. The following was sent my way via a friend, via Patchwerks's news letter. You'll of course find additional details on their GoFundMe.

"WE NEED YOUR HELP

We’ve proudly watched as the community that developed around Patchwerks has grown through a shared passion for the joy and magic of electronic instruments. All of our staff feel so much gratitude when people come to our store to play, learn, and connect with each other.

We’ve been so humbled by everyone who has come through our doors – whether you’ve been a first-time synth-curious explorer who trusted us to guide you, or whether you’ve been one of our own musical heroes who has consciously decided to purchase your instruments from an independently-owned and operated business.

Unfortunately, due to economic pressures beyond our control, the community we built at Patchwerks is at risk of losing its home… and we’re reaching out to ask for your help.

If you're willing to help us survive, a donation of as little as $25 can help Patchwerks continue our operations in a healthy way.

The years 2022 and 2023 made it difficult for us to operate, and now we're at the point where we need to ask for help or cease operations. We have a strong plan to get healthy, but we can't do it without you. Please consider donating to our GoFundMe campaign today."

Latest Showroom Sessions: Sherman and Limanjaya

video upload by Patchwerks

"Join us for Showroom Sessions, a monthly series of curated electronic music. Hear some of the region's boldest voices in ambient, experimental, dance music, and more. Proudly presented by Patchwerks with generous support from the community. This month, we host the talents of Portland-based Limanjaya and local head Sherman.

Sherman / Selector Records on Capitol Hill in Seattle.

Sherman’s been dabbling with gear since around 1997, and after many years of trying out different pieces has settled on a couple Critter & Guitari Organelles running custom patches, running through a Memory Man (w/ Hazarai, of course) delay pedal, building bizarre polyrhythms that on occasion sound good. On the spot beats intricately twist around each other, get manipulated, finagled, and fade into more intricate grooves.

Sherman has releases on Telomere Plastic, iLLikoi, Basement Sounds, and new local label Basement State.

Limanjaya:

Joshua Limanjaya Lim is a modular synthesist and producer residing in Portland, OR. He uses sample flips, glitchy beat repeats, and infectious melodies to craft his sound. Whether he is performing ambient, hiphop, or house music, the goal is always to get people moving. His latest album, UNTITLED 2023, is out now on all streaming platforms.

Patchwerks Seattle Synth Meet August 2016 Pics

Patchwerks Seattle Synth Meet August 2016

Above are a few pics I took at the event. It's a Flickr slide show, so mouse over for the controls. As always it was a great event filled with synth enthusiasts. Huge thanks to Patchwerks and Melrose Market Studios for hosting.

Some highlights this time around included some great talks from MØFFENZEEF Modular, Syntegrator representing KiwiTechnics & Vyzor, and Korg. Also present were Scott Jaeger of Industrial Music Electronics, Joe Grisso of Detachment 3 Engineering & STG, with an Archangel sequencer and expander and 5U system, George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular, Synthrotek and DinSync. On the hardware front, aside from various eurorack and 5U systems, there was a small Bugbrand modular, a new Minimoog Model D, Mother 32 & a Brother From Another Mother, a DSI Prophet 12, an EML 100, MFB Dominion 1, and more as you can see in the pics. A cool surprise was that Theremin World was also present. The best part of events like these of course are meeting likeminded people, familiar faces, and people you only knew online prior to the event. To everyone I met that complimented my work on the site, thank you for the support! It is appreciated.

Be sure to see the Patchwerks channel for previous posts for this event as well as the one back in April.

Patchwerks Patch Prompt Cards

Patchwerks Seattle

"Every day, Patchwerks sends out packages and orders filled with unlimited possibilities. Packages with the potential to teach, to inspire, to fulfill, to put you on stage or online, to get recognized -- or to just simply enjoy!

Through all these packages, we at Patchwerks get to see the depth and range of talent our customers possess on a daily basis and the wild and unusual spaces our gear can reach! So we thought, "Why keep all this awesomeness to ourselves? It’s time to share this talent with the world!" That’s where #mypatchwerks comes in.

How does it work?

From time to time, we create magical Patch Prompt cards which can mysteriously appear in your order! Patch Prompts are a little nugget of visual inspiration. Vague and mysterious in nature, these prompts are meant to be interpreted however you feel in the moment! Think Rorschach (or “ink blot”) tests.

With your new gear purchase (and whatever else you feel called to use!) refer to the visual Patch Prompt as inspiration, or a starting point, for your musical creation. Record this exercise and post to Instragram or Twitter using the hashtag #mypatchwerks to be a part of the global Patchwerks community!

Post your patches and tag #mypatchwerks to get connected with the global Patchwerks community!

"Model:Cycles
Six track FM based groovebox
Scale angles dense and jagged, glide over plains vast and fluid, or sink into mists of dissonance. To model is to shape the formless. Model:Cycles is a six track FM based groovebox that brings exploring into the heart of sound sculpting.

With six unique Machines in one lightweight unit you can effortlessly mold rhythm and melody across the digital spectrum using instant, tactile controls. Exploration made attainable.

Define the formless
The six Machines of the digital FM engine are unique to Model:Cycles, and cover both percussive and melodic synths, allowing you to make full, varied compositions. The four core Synth Controls put the tools of sound sculpting right in front of you, altering the behavior of each Machine differently and letting you push them to the limit. Every sound has a start, where will you take it?
Dedicated × 12
Dedicated knobs let you twist each Machine far and wide with wild, unexpected results waiting to be discovered. Use Control All to heave a parameter to the extreme and back again across every track. Elektron’s powerful sequencer gives you the freedom to record every move live or program the sounds and parameters of your composition one step at a time.
Light weight, heavy sound
Whether you use it as a versatile live instrument or groovebox on the go to pick up and craft full-blown compositions away from your studio, exploration has rarely felt so convenient and unimpeded.

Patchwerks Featured on Local Seattle News

video upload by KING 5

"A worker at one Seattle store said it looked like they were going out of business because inventory is so low right now." Patchwerks comes in halfway into the video.

Update: found the video on YouTube. Much better embed for the site. You can find the article on KING5 here.

I thought this was pretty cool. Patchwerks was featured on Seattle's KING5 news channel yesterday and today. The segment, as you can see, focused on supply chain issues impacting everyday shopping and seasonal items at Puget Sound retailers. It's fun seeing familiar synth heads featured on public TV.

Patchwerks Synth Petting Zoo at DAT 2016

Published on Aug 5, 2016 Brenden Hierro

"DAT (Digital and Analog Technologies) Conference 2016 brings PatchWerks from Seattle to set up the Synth Petting Zoo in Caras Park on Sunday. Andy Reichel explains the ins and outs of a modular synthesizer."

Note Patchwerks Seattle is set for August 21.

Side note: I was trying to figure out what was written on the top right of the Moogerfooger at 1:24 and on the bottom of the modules. I then realized the video is mirrored in reverse! Funny. It's synthesizers.com of course and Moogerfooger in reverse.

Introducing Capt'n BIG-O and Mr. Phil Ter by Cre8audio

video upload by Patchwerks Seattle

In this video resident expert Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) shares Cre8audio's newest modules: Capt 'n BIG-O and Mr. Phil Ter. Capt'n BIG-O is a fully analog oscillator built from the ground up to sound uniquely warm and huge. The oscillator also sports a wavefolder and a drive circuit, both of which you can route external signals into. Mr Phil Ter is a classic transistor ladder filter with a built in VCA and envelope generator. Along with these two new modules Cre8audio also released a two tier all wood rack stand for their popular Nifty Cases.

Captn'n Big-O - analog VCO introduction and feature overview

"Captn'n Big-O is a 100% fully analog eurorack compatible VCO with wave shaping. In this video, Cre8audio partner Richard Nicol of Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers takes us all on a tour of Capt'n Big-O's features and provides a few samples of how it sounds."

Mr. Phil Ter introduction, feature overview, and noise
video upload by Cre8audio

"What if your filter module also had a VCA and an envelope generator? Would a name like Mr. Phil Ter be a good name for it? Probably not right? Well, we at Cre8audio never claimed to be marketing geniuses (except for our jerk marketing person, but we rarely listen to them).

Anyway, check out Mr. Phil Ter, or 'Phil' as we affectionately call it. It's 12hp of filter, VCA, and envelope generator for all your sound manipulation needs."

Cre8audio BigEARS for NiftyCASE

"Introducing this fantastic miracle of science! That's right, 2 pieces of nice wood (birch) made specifically to stack 2 Cre8audio NiftyCASES together for double your Nifty pleasure!

NiftyCASE BigEARS are made specifically for NiftyCASE, a powered eurorack compatible modular synthesizer case with built-in MIDI to CV conversion made by Cre8audio. It's Nifty!"

Patchwerks Signals 2018 Seattle Synth Meet Pics

Signals 2018 - Patchwerks Synth Meet

Some pics from this year's Signals Synth Meet hosted by Patchwerks in Seattle, WA. Hover over the image and click on the right arrow to flip through pics.

Roland showed their new System 500 eurorack modules by Malekko, it is now official. Industrial Music Elecectronics, aka The Harvestman, had their new Piston Honda mkII with built-in graphic display. Synthwerks, a Seattle native, were showing their modules. As is tradition, a ton of people brought their own gear to share with others. You'll spot a Fairlight from synthroom.com (click through for a great shot of the system at Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada), an EMS SYNTHI, a DATO DUO and some old school rotary phones (not sure what they did as I didn't get a chance to check them out), some alternative/diy controllers, and of course plenty of eurorack, 5U (John L Rice), and Buchla modular. Also the only MATRIXSYNTH military hat in existence! :) It's owned by Larry Kleinke, aka Computer Controlled, who had the Roland gear, white Korg Arp Odyssey desktop, and Abstrakt Instruments Avalon.
