"Ok this is our latest creation, its a very complex home made electronic noise maker that we built for a friend of ours who was looking for an instrument that was a bit outside of the norm.

It took about three months to complete and there are still a few little modules that we are still working on but here it is in all its weird noise making glory. The modules include an optical theremin a passive ring modulator, sample and hold effect, low pass filter, phaser, square wave noise making circuit, three channel mixer and built in amp.

This unit has two banks of 16 stages, and can be configured to trigger 32 stages sequentially. All stages trigger. The clock has been tested to trigger at a continuous range of speed. The oscillator sounds "fat and juicy". The filters (2) have been tested to modulate the signal."

Update via Dave Cornutt in the comments: "The 400 sequencer is actually the leftmost box on top. It was a neat design with a quantizing feature that could be tuned for equal tempered or alternate scales. And by patching the gate signals, it was possible to make it do quasi-random permutating sequences.

The box on the right was the 401 synth. It was a two-oscillator synth with the EML two-pole multimode filter. The synth they are both sitting on top of is the EML 101 semi-modular."

"Bob Weigel of http://sounddoctorin.com goes over the layout of some of the more significant components in the Korg Polysix, a synthesizer which sold around 22,000 units produced from 1981 to 1983 or thereabouts. Korg simplified and cut cost in many ways on these units but they stand as one of the few fully analog (with a discrete VCO for each voice if not two) polyphonic synthesizers ever mass produced along with the Prophet 5/10, the Oberheim OBX, OBXa, and OB8, which had BOTH memory and full editing from the panel without toggling through menus etc. Later a MIDI retrofit was also introduced bringing this unit and a rather nice one I hear. Hopefully I can get mine working that I just purchased broken :-). That unit is not shown in this demo though. The MIDI board lays over the top of the CPU's and a connector actually goes into the cpu sockets and the cpu's set on the new MIDI retro board."

Does Your Synth Have Whiskers?

"As I was working on my [Hammond] M-2 I had a good view of the tone wheel generator in bright lighting. I thought that the tone wheel generator chassis was dusty but instead it was covered in whiskers. Zinc whiskers are crystalline structures that grow in the shape of a thin hairs emerging outward from a zinc surface. Every metal surface of the tone wheel generator is covered."

Studiologic NUMA

I'm guessing this is a MIDI controller keyboard only. Not much info on the Studiologic site. According to juri on the Waldorf list the physical design (think appearance) was designed by Axel Hartmann who also designed the Blofeld's look.

Axel Harmann also designed the look for the MOOG Little Phatty, Alesis Andromeda an other synths. He also of course produced the Hartmann Neuron.

BTW, if you know what synths he worked on, feel free to list them out in the comments. It would be interesting to know them all.

Modded Matrix-12 Stolen

"the instrument can be instantly recognized, and the mod is described in the caption ['a trip down memory lane. this is the 'matrix 12' which confused so many reviewers back in 2002 when i released Crashing the Russian Renaissance. note cyclone arpeggiator on right side, it is a monstrously powerful device for creating ostinatos and repetitive figures out of nothing. sadly, the synthesizer was stolen from me in 2007. it can be recognized by a half dozen 1/4" jacks on the back and toggle switches which enable one to either process six external signals or pass voices 7-12 into voices 1-6 for additional processing. '] it's the only one in the world modified that way, i know that because i modified all four of them and this one is unique - none of the others have toggle switches.

a row of six 1/4" jacks in the middle of the back of the instrument, with six three-position mini toggles in a line above them. the toggles control whether the jacks feed external signal to voices 7-12 or route voices 1-6 into voices 7-12. internally, the mod is distinguished by the use of test probes to access the individual voice outs by clamping to the pins on the stock 'external output' mod on the left side of the synth.

Once again: this is an instrument with provenance, the only one modified in this way that i know of. three others were modified _BY ME_, and can be recognized because they have 12 jacks on the back, a plastic plate that identifies it as a 'matrix 12 xpansion', and no toggle switches.

this one was modded by one of my collaborators with my assistance, it has _six_ jacks on the back approximately 1.5" apart from each other, in a straight line, roughly in the center of the back. above that is a row of six three position mini-toggles which allow the user to:

a-route the six synths in the bottom voice board into the six synths of the top voice board

b-do nothing

c-send line level signals at the jacks into the six synths of the top voice board.

there is no plastic plate on this instrument, the mod is clean but looks homebrewed. i never duplicated this mod, and to the best of my knowledge it never occurred to anyone else to duplicate this mod.

if the instrument is opened, it can be seen that the voice stacking option is done by running test probes with spring clips over to the hot pins on six of the voices on the stock multiple output modification made by oberheim.

additionally, the numbers for the multiple output mod have been peeled off because i had a bit of tape covering them up - in order for dan to make the mod work, he had to reverse the two banks of six jacks referencing the multiple outputs, so if you try to use them you'll find that they run
7,8,9,10,11,12,1,2,3,4,5,6"

Then two friends from Västerås and brought a large synthesizer.com system for me to try out so that I would get a better understanding of how they work as I have been curious about them for years.

Sadly enough the experience left me impressed, inspired and utterly confused.

So to round off the day I thought I could make some standard films of pedals trying to show and demonstrate a bit how they work. Usually when people do this they use a drum machine or a arpggiated synth so I thought that maybe I could do something a bit different...so I recorded a little loop into a Boss loopstation of the Mellotron MK II strings and then tried that through a bunch of pedals."
