I See Beats

I See Beats from Kyle McDonald on Vimeo.
"Cell phone-based beat sequencer, a small-crowd improvisation interface. Developed in an afternoon with a webcam, projector, and Open Frameworks. Squares of the video are thresholded for average brightness, and when the line reaches them MIDI notes are sent to Reason.

This was mostly inspired by "I Eat Beats" vimeo.com/625464 which could only support two or three hands simultaneously -- I wanted to allow for more people simultaneously.

This first performance/demo is from a local open mic. Next time I'd like to get some more musicians involved -- maybe a bassist and kit drummer improvising with the crowd...?

Message me if you'd like the source. Huge thanks to Blair for recording some video!"

Malekko E600M update

via Melekko:
"I thought i'd give everyone an update on the E600M module. Of course, were experiencing the saga of backordered parts, electronics component companies can take months to get you parts... Anyway, for those that missed the first post, this is the new 600mS analog delay we're offering. It has CV for every function, delay time, mix, and regen..and feedback loop too! the feedback loop has a level knob to adjust the amount of feeding back it will do...also the pot is a pull out type (because we ran out of room) so if it's pulled out you can modulate the feedback loop via CV and adjust the amount..
The last post was the prototype, this is what the production run will look like (sorry about the crappy pic)...just some module pron to get everyone through until they are released.
My guess now for availability is late Oct. and at 285.00. http://malekkoheavyindustry.com/"

DIY UV lamp for PCB exposure

YouTube via MusicMiK. Posting this one for the DIY aspect of it all. You might remember MusicMiK form these videos.
"No directly synthesizer related stuff today, as i'm currently building a new tool - an ultraviolet lamp for creating PCBs by exposing the photosensitive coating to this UV light later.

See more about the construction here:

http://www.mik-music.org/tiki/gallery53

This unit is not yet completed, i need to build a powerful Step-Up converter for about 80V and 0.6A to feed the LEDs, which are chained in 30 chains of 22 LEDs each. Besides this, some more mechanical work is needed and a timer will also be built in. And of course - safety. You don't want to look into a 40 watts 400nm UV light source accidentally :)"

Binary Beat

Binary Beat from Niklas Roy on Vimeo.
"This is an experiment, where I count one byte up - from 00000000 to 11111111. Decimal spoken, this is from 0 to 255. I have assigned a sound to each bit and when it switches from 0 to 1, the sound is played.

'Music is a hidden arithmetic exercise of the soul, which does not know that it is counting.'
Leibniz "

3^n Beat

3^n Beat from Niklas Roy on Vimeo.
"This is an experiment, where I'm counting in the numeral system on the basis 3. The count goes from 000000 to 222222. In the decimal world, this is from 0 to 728. I have assigned a sound to each digit and when it switches from 1 to 2, the sound is played.

This video is part of an investigation of the correlation between numeral systems and music. While the beat in this video sounds a bit awkward, it is interresting to compare it with the binary beat."

Analogue Systems rs390 Echo Module and rs200 Sequencer Fun

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"The rs390 is a very clean (24-bit converters) digital delay in Eurorack format with up to three seconds of delay time. There is a fun little range switch which allows you to cut your delay times on the fly You have CV control over the the delay time and the wet/dry mix. It is a stereo delay, capable of great sounding ping-pong delays but this is a mono video. Stereo soon!

We're also using two rs200 Sequential Controllers to great effect as well as two rs150 Sequential Switches, the rs280 Signal Trigger/Clock Divider and a bit of the rs260 Voltage Quantizer (Quantiser!) for the chord modulation. The rs200 can send end pulse outs to trigger the next row and there are a centerline of switches to turn on or off trigger pulses for each row. Trigger 3 is on all the time."

Originally $ 275,000.00 or so when new. Hmmm.

Removed from a controlled studio environment, alway's non-smoking, alway's clean. Last used and working nearly two years ago. I was present when we removed it and includes all associated cables, drives and Mac."

YouTube via PhotoAnimationGuy. That makes it Obama 3, McCain 0. Hmm... Synths and Cats... Synths and Dogs... Synths and Birds... Synths and Obama... We are starting to see another pattern here.
Again, it's always about the synths: "Hi, I made this anti Sarah Palin video using some analog synths. I used the cantus firmus patch on the alesis andromeda heavily, ms-20 saw wave for the gangsta lead on the chorus section, vintage jazz bass line, 808 samples from my old 808." You send it, I post it. Come on McCainies, send something in to make it even. Apologies to the politically adverse.

Magnetic RAM upgrade

"The Electrongate MRAM upgrade is designed for all Oberheim Z-80 based products including the DMX, DX, OB-8, OB-Xa, OB-X and DSX.

This upgrade replaces the battery-backed RAM used to hold patches and sequences with a new magnetic RAM technology that requires no battery to hold data when the power is off."

Maltröm

YouTube via salzmanufaktur. Malstrom graintable synthesizer.
"Just messin' around with Reason's Maltröm. It's still one of my fave bad ass synths!"
Some info on Maltrom via the Propellerheads Malstrom Page:
"Malström creates its otherworldly sounds using Graintable technology. Never heard of it? Neither had we, we had to invent it. This technology is a cross between granular synthesis and good old wavetable synthesis. And the result? You'll just have to hear it to believe it.

The Malström Graintable synthesizer features all imaginable filtering and modulation options, and a couple of unimaginable ones too; Try some real-time waveform stretching, some spectral modulation, or some awesome wavetable sweeping.

Malström comes with a wide range of meaty and exotic Graintables, letting you create anything from lush pads to scary squeals, from the pretty to the gritty. And that's just the sounds coming from Malström itself; try using this monster's audio inputs to filter other Reason devices, and let some of Malström's magic rub off on your drums or sampled vocals. With a device like this, no one can accuse your sound of being ordinary.

What's Graintable Synthesis?
Sure you want to know how Graintable synthesis works? Ok, here's the academic explanation.

Graintable synthesis is neither granular nor wavetable synthesis but a combination of the best of both methods. The results are exciting, controllable and texturally extremely varied.

The basis of a Graintable is a sampled sound, which has been pre-processed using an extremely academic and complex method. A whole leaflet would be needed just to describe this. Suffice to say, the result is a perfect set of periodic waveforms that, due to the pre-processing, can be manipulated in a variety of ways. The Graintable can be treated as a wavetable: sweep through it, move through it at any speed without affecting pitch, play any little section repeatedly, use it to pick static waveforms, jump between positions etc.
Moving tables

Granular tricks can also be performed on the Graintable. One of those tricks is the Shift function, which uses resampling to manipulate each grain in order to shift the formant of the Graintable through the harmonic spectra without altering the pitch.

The Index parameter controls the position in the Graintable currently played. Sweeping the Index is being done by using real-time controllers or modulation and can be a powerful way of adding life to a sound. Furthermore, each Graintable has a built in "motion", which sweeps the table according to pre-specified criteria depending on the Graintable used. In its most basic form, Motion simply controls the speed of the Graintable playback but also controls how a waveform is looped etc.
The bottom line

What does this mean musically? Well, imagine a sampled stack of detuned sawtooths, really thick, with chorus. By controlling sweep speed you control the fatness (down to the sound of one sawtooth). Or imagine a voice Graintable where you can extract any vowel, sweep back and forth and modulate the harmonic content. Cool, isn't it?

Yes its cool, but first and foremost musical. Graintable synthesis makes Malström a truly uniquely sounding synthesizer, ready to add a little uniqueness to your music."

Trying to Copy the Serge Modular Sound

YouTube via dkimcg
"I was trying to do a Serge modular imitation. There's actually a bit of logic I put into the patching, not one thing is a master time or frequency generator, but they all effect each other in some way or another. I even used the PlanB ASR I just got to make stepped randomness out of the smooth Heisenberg output. I'm not bothering explaining this one, since it would take a while. I think I need another Model 14 CV processor and some more logic modules to get closer."
