ARP 2600

"early version ARP 2600 from the personal collection of Phil Cirocco of CMS / Discrete Synthesizers. It features a rare, vintage ARP 2600P V2.0 console and a 3604P keyboard. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a fully functional, killer sounding synthesizer, as well as a rare piece of electronic music history.

This is an early version of the 2600P. It was made in early November of 1971. It is in excellent cosmetic condition. The tolex on the console, as well as the keyboard is in excellent condition - rare for such an early model. The serial number is valid and accurate. It features all original, early type ARP sub-modules. It uses an original ARP 4012 filter. All 3 VCO’s are the great sounding 4027 type. It has the rare, early version 4010 VCA. Since it is a version 2.0, it uses the LM301 op amp for the audio path. However, the op amps are the better sounding military can version. It also uses the original large reverb tank. All of these things combine to form "one great looking and sounding ARP 2600!" To view a production timeline go to: link

The electronics and mechanicals have been restored to 1971 ARP factory specs. It has not been modified or upgraded. The power supply was recently rebuilt to factory specs here at CMS. All the electrolytic bypass capacitors in the entire system have been replaced. This unit is ready for trouble free operation for another 20 years. For modifications and upgrades see: link

The outside of the 2600P console is in very good condition. The lid for the console is also in good condition. All of the chrome latches and corners are present and intact. The Tolex on the inner section is in good condition. There are some tears in the Tolex around the front panel that have been repaired. The front panel is in very good condition except for some small unevenness in the corner of the preamp section. This is probably from some hack trying to open the console incorrectly. The preamp itself has been checked out and is totally functional. There are some small scratches in the paint near the right speaker – see photo. There are also some light scratches around the sliders in the voltage processor section. The front panel has not been drilled or modified in any way. Remarkably, the silkscreen shows no signs of wear and is totally intact. The silkscreen is the more beautiful and complex, early type.

This unit also features all new “Switchcraft” chrome front panel hardware! All the sliders are intact and are fully functional. The original black slider caps were not present when I purchased the unit, so I was forced to replace them with other ARP caps. These caps are original ARP equipment and are very rare and expensive.

It includes the keyboard connection cable as well as the AC cable. The keyboard connector on the 2600 console is brand new. The keyboard connection cable is brand new.

The 3604P keyboard is from the same era. It is in brand new condition and is fully functional. The lid for the keyboard is also in perfect condition. The Tolex covering on the keyboard is in perfect condition. The keys are also in perfect condition. The front panel is in very good condition except for some paint chips near the portamento knob. The keyboard has been meticulously maintained here at CMS for the last 15 years.

This system has been fully calibrated recently here at CMS. It holds pitch and scale regardless of temperature from initial start up to running for 8 hours. With no modifications, it can easily be run from a MIDI converter box and MIDI keyboard instead of the ARP keyboard. For more info on this see: link

The patterns are synthesized with a Lagged Fibonacci Generator (LFG) circuit built with discrete logic chips (CD4000 CMOS). The LFG is an algorithm sometimes used in cryptography to generate encryption keys. I'm exploring it as a pattern generator for algorithmic art and music. Although cryptographers like the LFG because its output is similar to white noise, I find that through creative electronic filtering, the intricate details of its cyclic patterns become visible, and we can appreciate the details."

There is no real "intelligence" in the controller - it simply offers a variable CV out for both the ribbon and the pressure - with attenuators for each. The pressure has a somewhat exponential response curve. It's nice on hardwired synths for enveloping notes using the filter, and would work great on a modular for a multitude of functions."

This particular module was built as a prototype by John Blacet himself in the 1970’s, and served as the original for the article in Synapse. I know John built it, as I bought it directly from him years ago. This is not a production model, it's a hand made module on stripboard with a hand made front panel. Some functions are etched in the metal (see pics). This would be a truly unique addition to any modular system. It interfaces with mini jacks, though conversion to something like banana plugs wouldn't be difficult as they will fit on the same holes."

"Here's some noodling I did on my homemade synth on New Years day. It's not a real composition, as it's improvised throughout, and I can't/couldn't reproduce the settings I found along the way. Most of the sound is sourced from my klee sequencer.

And, so there's no mystery - there are no industry secrets here...

This patch was put together over several days of basically a few minutes here and there of fooling with it. I also didn't have enough patch cords to finish it, so had to make new ones during the process. And there are still some odd ones in there.

Clock is the blacet binary zone, picked because it's about the only clock source that'll run the mfos sequencer. Clock into the klee, and also into the cgs pulse divider - woops, first big problem - the mfos sequencer doesn't want to work after the clock has been through the pulse divider. Yikes. Through some strange experimental urge, I try plugging the pulse divider out into the motm 510 wavewarper, and for some reason the mfos sequencer works that way. Odd.

The original idea with the mfos sequencer was to have a fixed sequence of bass bell tones, which I had set up at one point, but was never really happy with it, and kept on devolving it so finally it was just popping the gate on a fixed pitch triangle wave every 16 clock ticks - doh... doh... doh... doh... doh...

Pitch setting on the klee are basically very simple - just 4 basic intervals - 2 seconds, 1 minor third, 2 fourths, and 1 fifth. Tuned precisely with a tuner so the intervals will add up to diatonic pitches (I know, how boring, but I'm a classically trained musician, what can I do...). The gate bus switches are mostly in the center position, with just one or two up or down, and I changed them on the fly during the noodle. Mostly the thing is in 16x1 mode, invert off, although there are times when I change things. I also flipped the merge switches on and off at various points.

The klee driven sounds are pretty straightforward - the fixed pitch outs (all three) are all going to motm 300 vco's 1v/oct ins, saw outs, and the vco's are all tuned to the same pitch, except one thats up an octave. All of these through standard motm vca's controlled by my modded motm eg's, driven by the 3 gate outs. The first entrance is going through a motm 480 filter, the second voice is through a mankato filter, and the third voice is through the tellun doomsday machine and then a motm 440 filter (which is a really delicious sounding combo). I finally have a real mixer (motm 830), so no wierdness there this time. Some little fiddling that occurred during the thing - I ran cables from the various glide outs from the klee to the freguency mod ins on the various filters - mixed them up, so filter freq is different than the vco freq, and the various knobs that control all this are turned on during the piece. I also turned on a bit of bleed on the vca's near the end - I like that effect, and meant to do it earlier, but forgot.

Video is an attempt to have 2 cameras going - a stationary one on a tripod, and a handheld, my little flip thing. The handheld one was mostly useless - I couldn't really run the synth and keep the camera focused on anything except for some brief moments. Edited in Final Cut Express, my first time using it, and there was a steep learning curve, hence no niceties such as cross-fades and titles. Maybe next time. Had to get some help from the apple support forums along the way - very handy resource! The audio was captured seperately in cubase (stereo this time!), and a little reverb was added, but that's all.

"We love the Roland TB-303 (who doesn't?), so we went nuts with some Analogue Systems rs95 oscillators, triggering them with the CV and Gate outputs from the 303. The sound of the 303 is given additional balls by processing it through the Malekko B:Assmaster Germanium pedal...sacrilege. You can hear the TB-303 without extra balls at the very end between 6:12 - 6:18.

Along with the A.S. rs95 oscillators we're also using the rs110 Multimode Filter, the rs120 Comb Filter, and the rs100 Low Pass Filter.

The drums sounds are from the behemoth Jomox XBase 999 and we're using the Kenton Pro Solo MIDI-CV converter to sync the 303. One of the cymbals from the Jomox is running through the A.S. rs310 Reverb/Chorus module, which is being modulated by the rs80 LFO's triangle wave. The rs290 Sample/Delay module is providing the delay for that cymbal as well. All of these sounds are being mixed by the rs165 Signal Mixer."

"For the first session of 2009 I was very lucky and happy to have swedish prog band Gösta Berlings saga come to the studio to do some overdubs for their second album which is due out in March. The band is a four piece.

During this first day of recording we did a lot of really fun classic prog stuff. Mellotron MK II Brass section, Male choirs and even a moog melody line for good measure. The Moog we used in this clip is the old Abba Mini Moog as used by Benny Andersson. That is why it is painted white. But we also recorded some pastoral Celeste stuff, pump organs as well electric guitar noise walls. These little snippets were recorded at the Roth Händle studios in Stockholm. This is where I spend my days recording and producing bands. The studio started 1998 in my apartment with a akai dps-12, an acoustic guitar, a Mellotron and some stomp boxes. Since then it has been steadily growing and the studio is now housing Orchestrons, Optigans, Pipe organs, modular synths, Stylophones et.c et.c The idea of sorts is to blend good songs with unusual sounds so both sound better. "I was playing the game Within a Deep Forest by Nifflas, and got inspired by its wonderfull music. That made me decide to make another Korg DS-10 song :)

This time, I didn't record the song and then show a bit info about it. Instead, I made pictures of the important screens and embedded them in the movie during the playing. You won't hear the individual sounds, but you will see their settings.

I also used my new tripod that I got for christmas, which in this case produces a very good quality video. :D

Zinc Negative Resistance Sound Synthesizer

An electronic sound composition is made entirely of sounds produced using zinc negetive resistance audio oscillator circuits. No vacuum tubes or transistors were used to generate the sounds.

Several tracks of the zinc oscillator sounds were recorded one at a time. Some of the sounds were enhanced with the addition of reverb.

The morse code parts were sent in real time by manually keying a J-38 straight key. Yes, I can send that fast with a straight key by using a somewhat unusual technique that I developed."
