Analog Crafstman ULTRAgristleizer Demo

Published on Dec 19, 2012 by boothnavy

"A special edition custom build for a customer in Holland. We added a digital noise source that is selectable as the modulator of the VCF/VCA on the Gristleizer. It also has its own controls for an external clock input and cv of the noise rate. There is a separate noise output that can be fed back into the various inputs of the Grsitelizer. I easily spent an hour just trying all the crazy combinations this one has."

x0xb0x Creator Limor Fried Wins Entrepreneur of 2012

Follow-up to Vote for x0xb0x Creator Limor Fried as Entrepreneur of 2012. She won! :)

via Entrepeneur where you'll find the article.

Some fun bits on our synth mistress ladyada from the article:

"Fave quote: 'We are what we celebrate.' --entrepreneur and inventor Dean Kamen

Words of wisdom: 'Be the change. If you want to live in a world that looks a certain way, don't wait around for someone else to do it.' --business partner Phil Torrone

Required reading: Makers: The New Industrial Revolution by Chris Anderson

Entrepreneurial idol: Tim O'Reilly, founder of O'Reilly Media, publisher of countless maker-friendly magazines and books

Biggest motivator: Feedback that Adafruit is inspiring the next generation of engineers

Design inspiration: New York City"

And a blurb on how it all started:

"She liked to put skills she learned in class to the test by building functional objects like MP3 players, synthesizers and light toys from scratch, using custom-ordered parts. This was before YouTube and the iPhone, so she posted DIY instructions for the projects on her personal website. Soon she was bombarded with requests to sell pre-assembled kits. "At first I was like, 'No dude, I'm really busy, leave me alone,'" she says. But after a few months, her fans wore her down.

With $10,000 her parents had allocated for her tuition, Fried bought a bulk quantity of parts and began assembling and selling her kits, making about $10 on each unit. In the beginning, running the company consisted of shipping a couple of packages a day from the 24-hour post office next door to her dorm. As orders increased, she hired friends; before she knew it, she was designing a new project every week around newfangled components like gyrometric sensors, solar panels and thermal printers."

"Last year New York City-based Adafruit did a booming $10 million trade in sales of DIY open-source electronic hardware kits..."

"This is just a really short demo of me experimenting with using the Mattson sequencer at the end of a new song that our band, The New Lines (thenewlines.bandcamp.com), is currently recording...

What you see is me flipping the play mode switch (to "program") to allow me to play an oscillator on my keyboard, and then at the end, I flip the play mode into "run" to start the sequence. And then I put the clock way up, close encounters of the third kind style...

sry about the audio quality - was running out of time and had to just use my cell phone audio for this one...!"

Doepfer Dark Energy II Filter Sweep

A little great machine with a sound fairly different from Dark Energy Mark I."

KOMA Elektronik releases the SVF-201 Analogue State Variable Filter!

"Great new filter module for eurorack modulars with CV'able Mix Output! With a backlit Cutoff knob!

After releasing two pedals and a CV motion controller in one year, Berlin based musical instruments manufacturer KOMA Elektronik are slowly moving into the world of modular synthesizers. Last month they announced the release of a tap tempo module for Eurorack synthesizers, but first there is the KOMA SVF-201: a state variable filter for the eurorack modular synthesizer format!

Just like it's bigger brother the FT201, the SVF-201's filter circuit is built up with optical parts (vactrols) therefor delivering excellent studio audio quality and an unique warm analogue sound The extensive patching possibilities make the module very easy to control and a versatile tool in any studio with any kind of input signal.

Inputs and Outputs
The SVF-201 comes with CV inputs with attenuators for Cutoff, Resonance and Select/Mix Out, where the last one allows the user to instantly sweep between the three different filter characteristics. The module also has adjustable gain up to +6dB, which gives the user to opportunity send a (slightly) overdriven signal into the circuit which results in MS20-like filter sweeps, allowing the filter to create nice experimental percussive sounds; just that extra punch that is sometimes needed to take a production to another level...

The unit comprises four audio outputs that can be used independently of each other at the same time, a High Pass, Band Pass, Low Pass and the unique CV’able Mix Out. The Mix Out out let’s you sweep continuously through the other three outputs by means of a knob and control voltage.

Build and layout
Build in KOMA's characteristic black and white style of design, the module looks very retro, with the full aluminum knobs allowing the user to set the filter cutoff frequency and resonance in a very precise manner. Behind the Cutoff knob there are 2 small LED's fitted that give a nice glow, ideal in dark performance situations! The SVF-201 uses parallel mounted PCBs so it can be used in skiffs as well as in big cases, the total depth is less than 40 mm. The SVF-201 offers an amazing sounding filter together with an user friendly surface; a professional feeling inviting musicians to play it real good!

The SVF-201 is now available at selected KOMA dealers worldwide and directly from KOMA Elektronik's webstore at www.koma-elektronik.com. MRSP: 259 EUR (Incl. EU VAT) | 230 EUR (Excl. EU VAT)

Specifications:

GENERAL

- Size: 3U, 12HP (60,60mm)
- Interface: 2mm white powder coated aluminum front plate + silkscreen printing

TECHNICAL:

- 4 audio outputs:
Low Pass
Band Pass
High Pass
Mix Out
- Audio input with attenuator / adjustable gain
- 3 CV inputs:

New Greg Surges TabulaRasa Fundraiser

Greg Surges has a new fundraiser for the TabulaRasa.  You'll find links to videos there also captured in previous posts via the Greg Surges label at the bottom of this post.  The following is the description captured for the archives.

"The tabulaRasa is a digital wavetable oscillator with voltage control of frequency, waveform selection, and the amount of interpolation between waveforms. The tabulaRasa consists of two components: a hardware synthesis module which can integrate into a modular synth system, and a software application which allows the user to create their own custom waveforms. These waveforms are then transferred from the computer to the tabulaRasa module through a standard SD card slot. A wavetable oscillator is a standard technique in computer music. The oscillator uses a counter (ramp wave) to read a memory array. The array is filled with pre-computed samples of the desired waveform. The memory index being read increases with the counter, and resets when it reaches the end of the array.

The tabulaRasa hardware module has three potentiometers and three control voltage inputs for each of the control parameters (frequency, waveform selection, and interpolation). The control voltage inputs expect a voltage range of +/- 5V, and the board requires a +/- 12V power supply. The potentiometer for each setting selects a midpoint from which the corresponding voltage input diverges.

The tabulaRasa software application allows users to create waveforms in three distinct ways: through manipulating breakpoints to set sample amplitudes, adjusting the strength of various harmonics, or by loading audio samples.

The first method, manipulation of breakpoints, allows the user to adjust 16 breakpoints of a waveform. Each breakpoint is represented by a slider, which can be raised or lowered with the mouse. The points between those breakpoints are interpolated, and there are six user-selectable interpolation types: linear, sigmoid, cosine, circular, exponential, and “Decimated" (a simulated bit reduction algorithm).

The harmonic method uses the same sliders as the breakpoint method, but instead uses the sliders to represent the amplitudes of 16 harmonically-related sine waves. From left to right, the sliders climb the harmonic series, and a harmonic will become more prominent as its slider is raised from the bottom of the screen. The waveform which results from these mixed waveforms is displayed.

Finally, using the “Load Sample” option, the user is presented with a file dialog box from which a short audio file can be selected. The Adventure Kid Waveform pack works perfectly, and is made up of 4300 free single-cycle waveforms.

Note: This fundraiser is for PCB/Microcontroller sets only, not complete kits."

u-he's Pedolski VA Soft Synth Updated and Released for Free

u-he or Urs Heckmann is the man behind the recently released and acclaimed Diva virtual analog synth.

"Podolski is a simple, CPU-efficient virtual analogue synthesizer. Basically a cut down version of FilterscapeVA with just one oscillator, one filter, one envelope and two LFOs, it also features a Zebra-style arpeggiator/sequencer plus chorus and delay effects.

Podolski's specialities are the Click parameter (emphasizes the filter attack) and its ability to seamlessly morph between three waveforms (WaveWarp).

Version 1.0 was released as a free gift for visitors to the u-he booth during Musikmesse 2005. Right after Musikmesse it went on the cover mount CD of the German KEYBOARDS magazine (later Sound & Recording). Podolski was u-he's first 'magware' offering, and was distributed with every issue until about 2009.

"Podolski has been refurbished with some new presets by Howard Scarr, has undergone a GUI makeover (two new skins) and supports a wider range of plug-in formats. A new English language manual is also included. Download Podolski for free from here (top right of this page)!"
