KORG Interview with the Developers of the MS-20 - New Analogs to Come?
Some key points: depending on how well the MS-20 is received, we may see more from KORG, specifically the SQ-10 and MS-50 get mentioned below. The MS-20 Mini has the first MS-20 filter. As expected, no MIDI CC. The reason they give is because MIDI CC is limited to 128 steps so they did not want to lose the higher resolution of analog. True, but it would have made a nice MIDI controller for the iMS20 and other synths. The real reason I'm guessing is cost of development which in turn makes it more affordable for us, so that is a good thing as well. The following is the text captured for the archives. You'll find the pdf with a few more pics here. "Tell us about the concept and development process - along with any interesting encounters you had - during your revival of the original MS-20.
'Since the monotron and monotribe allowed us to give users of all ages and levels of musical experience the unique enjoyment of creating sounds with an analog synthesizer, we felt that our next step should be to provide a full-fledged analog synthesizer. The MS-20 is what immediately came to mind. The development of software instruments such as the iMS-20 had given us experience in how to convey the basic design and specifications of the MS series, and we had also heard requests for analog sound modules in the Korg Legacy Collection, so it was a clear and natural decision that we should start the development process.
Developing the MS-20 mini brought to mind numerous memories from when we first developed the MS-20 thirty-five years ago. One particular memory was of our difficulties in deciding how to select transistors. Another interesting memory was when Gotthold Meyer from our German distributer (MUSIK MEYER Corporation) told us that the MS-20 could also be used as educational equipment for teaching science, and that we made an ultra-large MS-20 the size of a blackboard.t we should start the development process.'
How is the MS-20 mini superior to the original MS-10?'We've added MIDI input and a USB port that were not available on the original MS-20, allowing the new model to be smoothly integrated into modern music production environments. Another advantage is that that it's slightly smaller than the original MS-20, saving space. In particular, the newly compact body is something you'll appreciate once you've used it.'
Why did you decide on a body size that was 86% of the original MS-20?
"We have great respect for the original MS-20, so we felt that it would be devaluing to make the new model exactly the same size as the original. That's why the size is different than the original. We also felt that it looked good in a slightly smaller size."
What gave you the most trouble when designing the MS-20 mini?
'As with the original MS-20, there was much deliberation in deciding on the transistors. That's because the performance of an analog synthesizer is greatly affected by things that don't appear on the spec sheet, such as the pairing characteristics of the transistors, and their response and consistency in the micro-current domain.'
Earlier and later models of the original MS-20 used different filters. Which filter did you select for the MS-20 mini?
'The MS-20 uses the KORG35 circuit that was on the earlier version of MS-20. Preferences vary between users, but we felt that the earlier version of the filter created a sound that had a more distinctive presence, and thus it was the appropriate choice for this reincarnation.'
Do you have plans to release circuit diagrams to users so that they can modify the MS-20 to support Hard Sync or Filter-FM, as you did for the mono tribe?
'As we did for the monotron and monotribe circuit diagrams, we will consider this if there is user demand. However, the MS-20 mini is more complex than the monotron and monotribe, so it will be more difficult to modify.'
Can the MS-20 mini receive MIDI control data and respond to it?
'Using coarse-resolution (128-step) MIDI data to control an analog synthesizer such as the MS-20 mini will not give you the smooth, un-stepped parameter changes that are characteristic of analog synthesizers, so from the design stage we made the decision to limit MIDI support to note data. This means that if you connect the MS-20 mini's MIDI input to the MIDI output of your keyboard or DAW, it will receive keyboard note data and produce sound in response. As developers, we want you to experience the unique enjoyment of analog synthesizers, so instead of using the parameters of the MS-20 mini via MIDI, we'd like you to use the instrument hands on in real- time and enjoy how the sound changes dynamically.'
Do you have plans for reviving other MS series models in the future, such as the SQ-10 or the MS-50?
'We want to give people who have never actually touched an analog synthesizer the chance of experiencing how much fun it can be. Just how necessary such a device would be in the present day is something that we'll decide after seeing the response from MS-20 mini users.'
Finally, what do the two of you think is the greatest attraction to the MS-10 mini?
'Very simply, it's a way to understand the origin of the synthesizer. As the developers, our wish is that the MS-20 mini will let you understand the enjoyment of creating your own sounds from scratch, rather than simply using ready-made sounds. Set it on your desk as your “go-to instrument”!'"

VCO Mute - essential mod for using the filter with external audio.
VCO Boost - makes the Monotribe sound more bassey and less squeaky.
Clicks reduced (not removed) - The Monotribes GATE makes loud clicks, which can be a problem. All Monotribes suffer from this bug, even brand new models...
I haven't yet figured out a way to completely remove them, but they can be reduced a little by adding a couple of small capacitors.
loads of new controls for tweaking the Analog Drums.
Drums to VCF switch - allows the Analog drums to be piped into the VCF (Fuck yea!!!)

Breath Martenot - Breath driven Pulley/Ring controller - Work in progress.
Published on Mar 22, 2013 Mark Steiner·5 videos
"This is the 2nd prototype of my own version of a Martenot style controller. I decided to expose the pulley loop fully. I find it's pretty interesting/fun to watch the loop and hear the pitch change accordingly. I've had a few ideas about maybe attacking LED's to the pulleys to mix some light up real time. Could be fun.
Usually these kind of instruments (silimart to the Ondes Martenot) use a left hand pressure key for volume/filter brightness. On mine, I am using a Nyle Steiner breath controller, which really makes for smooth dynamics and fast articulation. There are even some parts showing multiple tonguing techniques often used by trumpet and other wind players to tongue fast by saying Tu Ku Tu Ku or Tu Tu Ka.
Special thanks to Nyle Steiner for the great sounding synth oscillators and filters used in this demo. Also thanks to Dana Countryman and Mike Beauchamp for their own expertise and inspiration in relation to instruments like this.
Thanks for listening! See my current classical electronic project at ThePinesofRome.com."

If you are interested in patch and knob settings, ensure you're watching HQ and check out the knobs whenever you like the sound.
This patch also works on the iMS-20 and the MS-20 legacy software, and of course on the new mini (although, unfortunately I've not been able to test the mini yet).
Some info on the patch:
The modulation generator is functioning as a clock generator, and triggers the main envelope (EG2) continuously. Both of the MG knobs can be used to adjust gate time and clock speed.
The sample and hold module samples random values from pink noise. This is done every clock pulse. The sampled value is used for frequency modulations (OSC + HPF + LPF).
Wanna try it for yourself?
Almost any of the knobs are available for tweaks, so there's a lot of room for your own imagination and creativity. Here are the most important notes/limitations to keep in mind:
- Ensure EG2 hold and release are set to 0. Attack, decay and sustain can be used without a problem.
- EG1 parameters cannot be used since the envelope is used as a clock signal for the S&H module. (All knobs at 0!)
- The MG cannot be used as an LFO (unless you want an LFO with the clock speed)
PS. Since YouTube doesn't support endless movies -and for some other technical reasons-, I decided to record only 5 minutes of the whole piece. Sorry for the misleading title. ;-)

New 4ms Quad Pingable LFO (QPLFO) teaser preview
Published on Mar 22, 2013 4mspedals·73 videos
"New from 4ms: the Quad Pingable LFO (QPLFO).
A 4-channel LFO with tap-tempo, clock-sync (pingable), variable skew, and reset.
This quick patch demonstrates some of the features of the QPLFO. The Quad Clock Distributor clock outputs are driving the ping of each channel of the QPLFO (via a cable in the back). Next, the QPLFO outputs drive the 4 VCAs of the Toppobrillo Mixiplexer (also via a cable connected in the back). The Mixiplexer has four VCOs running into it, that are FM'ing each other. The KOMA Elektronik SVF-201 Vactrol filter is processing the bassline sound. A Brainseed (from Antimatter) is doing the sequence.
**QPLFO Details**
Four independent tap-tempo/clock-syncable LFOs
Each LFO channel has:
-Ping input jack
-Tap tempo button
-On/Mute button (latching)
-Skew CV jack and knob
-Reset jack
-LFO output
-LED to indicate output signal
Q: What is Pingable?
A: The timing of each LFO is set by an external clock (ping) or a Tap Tempo. So if you tap in a tempo and then change the skew (attack/decay ratio) or even give it a reset, the total period and frequency of the LFO will stay the same, keeping your modulations in sync.
Available April 2013 from your favorite modular shop!!

"For more info: http://blog.dubspot.com/monark
Dubspot brings you a sneak peek at Native Instruments' newest software synthesizer, Monark: a re-creation of classic analog monosynths like the iconic Minimoog Model D.
Dubspot's Matt Cellitti has been working with Monark for awhile and made this sneak preview video for us giving a brief tour of how this synth is laid out and how to use it. He also demos some of the presets to give an idea of the kind of sounds this new/old instrument is capable of."

On the updated video: "This is take II because as I was watching the first version I noticed that in all my splicing I made it look like the navigation from the search was broken so I redid parts of the video to demo that in reality - the navigation actually works properly. Cheers all."
