Processed Mellotron M4000D May 31st 2024

video upload by John L Rice

"A quick and dirty Mellotron noodle. I currently can’t stand for long (foot issue) so I took some experimental noodling audio and some rough snapshots of the gear used and edited it all into a video FWIW.

So it's the Mellotron M4000D Rack was processed through a Club Of The Knobs fixed filter bank and channel enhancer with 6 outputs of the channel enhancer mixed by Modcan and Moon mixers and returned to the main Allen and Heath mixer for some additional EQ and effects processing from Strymon pedals Mobius, DECO, and BigSky, plus a touch of reverb from the Lexicon MX400."

A Sunday Morning Modular Synth Patch - May 19th 2014

video upload by John L Rice

"Featuring self transposing Moon Modular 569 sequencer with 569ES and 569EG expanders and two 564 switches to vary the pattern. All clocked by an Oakley Slim VCO through a Synthetic Sound Labs V-Gates divider. The voice is a single Marienberg Sine Phase VCO into two SSL Tube VCAs, one STG Soundlabs Envelope to modular both, and the VCA outputs go to a Modcan Dual Delay 73B. And a few notes played on the Mellotron M4000D Rack. Strymon BigSky and Lexicon MX400 for reverb."

Remembering Gert Jalass

video upload by John L Rice

"The sad news of Gert's passing put me out of sorts and I ended up looking through old pictures and decided to make a very short and quick remembrance video out of them. Rest in peace Gert, and condolences to all of his friends and family. Feel free to share comments and stories relating to Gert in the comments section below if you like.

The simple sequence is a Moon Modular 569 Quad Sequential Voltage Source running two identical voices each consisting of a MOTM-300 VCO, 1/4 of a MOTM-380 quad LFO, 1/2 of a Moon 517 VCF, 1/2 of a Oakley dual VCA and 1/5 of a Club Of The Knobs poly EG. Also used: Expressive-E Osmose keyboard, Mellotron M4000D Rack, Roland A-88 controller, Strymon BigSky and Timeline pedals, Lexicon MX400 rack."

RIP Gert Jalass of Moon Modular

Some sad news sent my way via John L Rice who helped man the Moon Modular booth at NAMM every year. Gert Jalass, the man behind Moon Modular has passed away. I met Gert serveral times at NAMM and he was always a pleasure to talk to. He always welcomed me with a smile. He was genuinely passionate about synthesisers and the synth community. I haven't been able to make events lately and was looking forward to seeing him again. I'm so saddened that I won't be able to. I am sincerely going to miss him.

You can find posts featuring Gert here, and of course posts featuring Moon Modular here.

Slowly Learning The Five12 Vector Sequencer

video upload by John L Rice

"Just some baby steps as I learn to use the Vector Sequencer and integrate it into this system. The Vector Sequencer is just playing two chords and sending them via MIDI to the genXnoise dXeus machina (8 DX7’s in an 8 hp module!) and the MIDI thru goes to the Mutable Instruments Yarns which I’m selectively using to play four SynthTech based voices ."

Octasource, Derivator, Burst, and Rample (a Eurorack test, not a law-firm ;-)

video upload by John L Rice

"I changed just one module in one system recently and that has caused a 'modular-Tetris' chain reaction meltdown across multiple systems! 🤦‍♂️🧐🙄😅

Anyway, I stopped working to test a patch idea: using the Ladik J-110 Derivator to create 4 separate gates from a single Erica Synths LFO output that are used to play a Squarp Instruments Rample sample player. (Athena Ladik Burst module is processing one of the outputs from the Derivator)"

Poly MOTM Synth Noodles With A Side Of Oscilloscope

video upload by John L Rice

"Another test after modifications.

Only Synth Tech modules used:
MOTM-650 MIDI to CV
MOTM-300 VCO x 4
MOTM-800 EG x 4 (in only two spaces)
MOTM-190 Dual VCA x 2

Actually I used a custom multiples and two Moon 526 mixers for the oscilloscope feed.

Quick Test After Repairing My Synth Tech MOTM-410 Triple Resonant Filter Module

video upload by John L Rice

"I built this module almost 14 years ago but made a mistake (I swapped positions of two adjacent resistors causing the Rate knob to not work correctly) so tonight I took the time to find the problem and repair it."

Phantom Of The Random

video upload by John L Rice

"A basic 4 voice poly modular synth patch (Synth Tech VCOs, Moon VCFs, Oakley VCAs, COTK EGs) with a lot of processing (COTK Spectral Modulator and Phase Processor, Oakley Flanger/Chorus) modulated by (Synth Tech, Krisp1, Modcan, and Marienberg LFOs)"

Quick Test Of The Club Of The Knobs C1670 Ensemble Generator

video upload by John L Rice

"I haven’t used this module in years so I gave it a test to check for functionality. It works about like new but could use a proper calibration? "

5U Modular Synths Are Too Big And Only Good For Melodic Music Like Bach And Berlin School!

video upload by John L Rice

"😜 Some noise music from this little 5U system. A mic is plugged into the Modcan Envelope Follower and the preamp output goes to the input of the Modcan Digital Delay. The feedback loop output of the delay goes to the Free State FX Supra Resonator (MI Rings) and the rings output goes to the Corsynth C103 Frequency Divider/Multiplier, and the C103’s output goes back to the Delay’s feedback loop return. The Encore Electronics UEG is running a CV sequence to the Supra Resonator. There is also some reverb provided my the Yamaha mixer off screen.

Taking This Little 5U Modular Synth For A Spin

video upload by John L Rice

"While intended for processing external sounds this little synth can make great sounds all by itself! The modules are from left to right:

STG Soundlabs - Envelope
Modcan - Digital Delay 59B
Encore Electronics - Universal Event Generator (UEG)
Modcan - Envelope Follower 45B
Free State FX - Supra Resonator (Mutable Instruments - Rings)"

Another MSSA! (Modular Synth Service Announcement 🤓)

video upload by John L Rice

"I was surprised when the top switch on this STG Soundlabs Envelope module started sticking! A rare problem indeed for this type of switch, at least in my experience. Turns out that there apparently was some small variance in manufacturing that caused the switch button to bind against the panel? I made the video to document the issue and solution."

Time Corridors

video upload by John L Rice

"And another "modular Tetris" rearrangement session which led to some keyboard noodling which lead to a recording which lead to a video which lead to the need to add a lot more parts and video editing which lead to the reality that I have much more important things to be doing which caused me to stop where I was at which is why all you get is this unfinished thing! 😅

Modules used:
Oakley/Krisp1 - Slim VCO B, Diode Superladder VCF, Flanger/Chorus
STG - Envelope
Moon - 569 sequencer
Corsynth - C102 VC LFO
Grove Audio - PM Resonator
Modcan - Quantizer 55B
Marienberg - Sine Phase VCO
Club Of The Knobs - C1660 VC Phase Processor
