"Jag vill ha en egen måne" - on Roland JV-35

Published on Dec 29, 2014 organfairy

"I got this keyboard very cheap because it was pretty obvious that it had been in the hands of teenagers (it came from a school).
I could off course try and contact the local Roland supplier to get some new keys if possible. But I decided that I would try and cut some pieces from an old worn out keyboard from an organ I scrapped many years ago.
The operation went relatively well so I will probably keep it like this.

At first sight the Roland JV-35 keyboard is just another general MIDI affair. But because it has a build-in signal processor and edit sliders for cut-off, resonance, attack, decay, release, and vibrato it is actually a quite nice little synthesizer. At least that is my impressions after using it for a short while.

The music is from Sweden this time. Ted Gärdestad was a very popular teenage star in the early 1970's. Backed up by Björn Ulveaus and Benny Anderson - who later formed ABBA - he had several hits in his home country. And one of them was this song called "Jag vill ha en egen måne" which I here play on the Roland JV-35."

DEXED - Open source DX7 librarian / emulator VSTi demo

Published on Nov 4, 2014 artofdreammusic

"An insight into the powers of DEXED v0.8, the open-source DX7 librarian / emulator VSTi.

This great VSTi can be used both as a DX7 librarian to edit patches and send them to your DX7 synth (if you own one) but also as an emulator as it's built in engine recreates quite faithfully I think the sound of the DX7 synth.

The sounds in this demo come from the DEXED engine, not from a hardware DX7... Sometimes reverb has been added in the daw (and in this case, it's noted).

DEXED was created by Digital Suburban and can be downloaded for free here : https://github.com/asb2m10/dexed

DEXED loads original DX7 sysex, so google them to find great presets to start working with it... but never forget that true synth lovers like to tweak their machines, and this has never been that easy for the DX as it is since DEXED exists :-)

Have fun with DEXED... and your DX7 if you are the lucky owner of one."

Beyond The Rungler - An experimental Eurorack module based on the heart of the Benjolin

Published on Dec 28, 2014 elohess2

"For more description look here: http://journeytounknownsoundscapes.bl..."

"During my search to find a cool generative (and simple) pattern generator I found the schematic of the Benjolin and here. I will not build a full Benjolin. But what is the heart of the Benjolin? After looking some videos and studies of the schematics, I would say:

The Rungler

It's a sort of CV pattern generator. It works a little bit like a 1 bit random sampler (With a Sample&Hold feature). Samples are taken from an audio source, e.g. the audio output of the voices of the Benjolin or from a noise source (this is what I will describe here) is "sampled" and synchronized by a clock source (or an other trigger).

A serial stream of bits is shifted into a shift register one step per clock cycle.

This serial bit stream is used to feed a parallel digital analog converter in 3 bit resolution. At the end of the circuit a control voltage comes out and can be feeded into synth voices. And there is a feedback loop to replay the samples. The incomming audio confuses the feedback and so new patterns are generated.

Simple."

http://gstormelectronica.blogspot.com/

These are some of my original patches made for the Roland JX-8P synthesizer. Bass, dark string and synth pads, arpeggios and stabs.

There are some realtime patch edits in this demo without the use of the external programmer, so go ahead and give that EDIT slider a nice workout. Would have been nice if the edit slider had a pass-thru data function, that is why you will hear some edit jumps in the audio.

In addition to utilizing the Beatstep for sequence duties, there is gratuitous amounts of delay and reverb added to most sounds."

Roland JX-8P Demo #3 - Skywriter

Published on Jul 21, 2016 gstormelectro

"Audio and video by G-Storm Electro c.2016

This is the Roland JX-8P, possibly one of the most under-rated synthesizers. This time I have multi-tracked live takes with Big Sky and Timfactor effects-fueled production chock full of EQ, compression and a few dubious mastering techniques. The TR-8 drum machine is barely breaking a sweat, churning out a painfully simple beat. There are some factoids relating to the JX-8P along the way. What is this music? I call it a cheesy 80's dream pop rendition in 3/4 time with almost a two step feel. I know, I'm scratching my head too...I was very tempted to scrap this during recording. But it was too fun to see it through, too odd not to post, too catchy for me to easily dismiss."

Soundmachines Bl1 Brain Interface Eurorack & NeuroSky Headset

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Soundmachines BI1brainterface is an exploration and performance tool for musician, producers, actors, body performers and coreographers who wants to connect their mental and emotional sphere directly with the performance.

We wanted to create something that doesn’t require the use of a computer, and brings immediacy and easy of operation in this upcoming technology.

By stressing the capabilities of the Neurosky MindWave Mobile headset, the BI1brainterface is developed to connect your mental status to your gear, in the most easy and open way possible.

Whenever you have an analog modular synthesizer or a MIDI sound generator, you can influence on sounds, sequences, timbres and drive the performance with an added controller, the most sophisticated: you.

Attention and Meditation are the most ‘robust’ and repeatable variables that you can count on. But also the EEG power spectrum bands (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Theta) are available to control other eight sound/light/video characteristics. As a bonus, we put in your toolbox a variable threshold to generate a ‘trigger’ based on your facial muscular activities (i.e. blinking or grin)

In the studio or in a live environment, weared by a dancer or an actor on stage, or just use it to relax yourself and raise your self-consciousness about focus, relax and meditation.

Bio feedback is another field of operation for the BI1brainterface, reaching applications such as the several described above and more."
