"True love" by Danielle (TSF)

YouTube via TheSynthFreq. previous post
"Hi! This is a new composition written 2.5.2010. The background track was written track by track on the Yamaha Motif 6 synthesizer. I recorded to 5 tracks in it's sequencer, recording in real time.
Track 1: Rhodes
Track 2: Bass
Track 3: Jazz drum kit
Track 4: Background strings
Track 5: Bongos (jazz kit)

The Organ patch was played on the Roland D-50. This is a "rock organ" type sound that I made only using 4 square waves and just the chorus filter unit in the D-50. No LFOs were used in the TVF or TVA. The organ "tremolo" sound is really the chorus unit at moderate speed at the max value of saturation.

The lead patch is my usual Roland Alpha Juno-1 E-guitar patch with a little EQ in the higher frequencies for clarity in the mix.

PLEASE ENJOY!
:) TSF"

Synth Shots via Building Castles out of Matchsticks

"Building Castles out of Matchsticks is the occupation of a girl named Anne from Hamilton, ON. A small universe of photographs, music, video and written words presents itself to you in small glimpses, fleeting melodies, layered textures, and revealing concealment's. An ever-shifting series of port holes, through which we may glimpse something we recognize if we would but listen. A familiar form that is, at the same time, always moving... bcom'ing if you will."

Yamaha DX1

via this auction

"Here we have the king of FM synthesis and one of the "Holy Grails" of vintage synths (in my opinion). The Yamaha DX-1. Only around 140 of these were produced at an original cost of $13,900 in 1985. That is $26,500 in today's money! This is serial number 118. Yamaha hand selected the finest components available and hand assembled each synth. This is very apparent when you see, hear and play it. The keyboard action is luxurious. It is equipped with a professional wooden, weighted 73 note keyboard. The sound is stunning. I know everyone on ebay says their item is "amazing" but there is something special about the DX-1. I have A/B compared it with Yamaha's FM plug in board, two DX-7s linked together, and a DX-5 and there was no comparison. The DX-1 has a distinct superiority in sound every time, and it's not just a subtle difference either. There is a rawness to the sound of the DX-1 that is lacking in other FM synths. It feels alive, like an old modular synth's immediacy of sound and control. The only way to get the sound of a DX-1 is to own a DX-1 , no software emulation or other synthesizer compares in my opinion. (I have since sold the other Yamaha synths on ebay and received positive feedback for them all)" Sold For: US $5,595.00

KORG MONOPOLY - HQ DEMO synthesizer 1981 Korg Mono Poly

KORG MONOPOLY Analog Synth DEMO | Mono Poly

YouTube Uploaded by AnalogAudio1 on Feb 7, 2010

"The Korg MonoPoly came out 1981 and was the last analogue monophonic synthesizer from Korg. Actually, the MonoPoly is a monophonic synth - but you can play it polyphonically, too - if necessary.

The Korg/Mono Poly is a very flexible synthesizer: It has 4 oscillators, oscillator sync, cross modulation, PWM, 24 dB Filter, 2 ADSR envelopes, 2 LFO's with many waveforms, ARPEGGIATOR, CHORD MEMORY and portamento.

It is built around SSM chips like the Korg Polysix. I think, with the MONOPOLY Korg wanted to produce a synth as an alternative to the Minimoog and Sequential Circuits Pro One.

The most characteristic thing on the MonoPoly is the arpeggiator, when it triggers the oscillators in poly-mode. Every step of the arpeggiator triggers a different oscillator - unique patterns can be produced.

The MonoPoly sounds great - it produces fat basses and leads - but also FX sounds, bells, like you can hear in the video.

I played the Korg MonoPoly sometimes with a Roland DEP-5 for delay effects and a Lexicon MPX-500 for reverbs."

hue008 spectral apc modulation : an intro (1)

YouTube via coloringpad. You might remember this one from this post.
"Here is the first demo video of the hue008 spectral apc modulation unit... The HUE 008 consists of 2 APC's ((atari punk consoles. really four 555's)) built from scratch from the circuit board (set 1: yellow and green, set two: red and purple), with two knobs to cross modulate between them (orange and blue). Each APC is routed (respectively) left and right, for stereo goodness. In addition, the HUE 008 has a tint knob & switch (stereo ring modulator), a light knob and switch (one solo light sensor), a spectrum knob and switch (three light sensors housed inside the pulsing and spectrum cycling center light, which is operated by the lower center pushbutton), and a shadow knob and button (battery sag)... I attempted to design a super dynamic, fat APC, with the APC's being the signal for ring modulation, to boot. I hope somehow it makes somebody's top ten list of things that make ununderstandable noise somewhere. I'd be honored and flattered. Please rate and comment... www.coloringpad.blogspot.com"

Just pulled it out of the box, it has an easy user interface (this clip was done with ~8 hrs "flight time").
All sounds here, are by the Blofeld synth besides the hi-hats and snares. A fun tool !

Video is a short excerpt from the magnificent movie by Godfrey Reggio - Koyaanisqatsi (Life without balance). The original films soundtrack, is by no other than Phillip Glass. 1982."

Kurzweil K150 FS Synth Rack

via this auction

"Kurzweil K150 Fourier Synth Rack from 1986. If you are not familiar with the K150, it was Kurzweil’s only module to use additive synthesis, much like the Sequential Circuits VS [the Prophet VS was not additive - see Robbie's notes in the comments]. It comes loaded with 69 presets sounds in memory so you won’t have to start from scratch. It also comes with the FS-SMP Fourier Synthesis modeling program written by Hal Chamberlin."

Update via Richard Lainhart: "i used to own a K150, back in the 80s. It was a wonderful-sounding instrument, but I was never able to really program my own sounds because the modeling program mentioned in the description runs only on an Apple IIe, which was already obsolete in the mid-80s. I sorta got it to work in a IIe emulator running on my Mac Plus, but the modeling app was crippled running in the emulator, and too limited for real work. The 150 had many excellent preset sounds, and featured a number of alternate tuning tables.

I believe Wendy Carlos also used one of these, and I'd heard she got a IIe specifically to run the app. She also, if I recall correctly, designed some of those alternate tunings.

For those interested, several of the tracks on my second, unreleased Periodic Music album called "Walking Slowly Backwards" feature the FS150, in particular, a piece called "The Naga" in which the lead voice is the 150 controlled with a Lync LN-4, using (I think) one of Carlos' alternate tunings.

You can listen to those tracks here on my site:

audio palette

YouTube via kjolly70. on iTunes here
"Audio palette is an innovative instrument that allows you to remix looped tracks in a new way.

In audio palette each sound is represented on the screen as a circle. The closer your touch is to the center of the circle, the louder the sound. Your performance is automatically recorded and looped back with perfect timing accuracy allowing you to create a new loop built from your remix. You can record up to four of these looped recordings and switch instantly between them to create yet another layer of performance. The software also allows you to edit the positions and sizes of the circles on screen, so you can develop your own style of play.

This initial release has four palettes and includes custom samples provided by legendary rock music producer and ambient music pioneer Brian Eno.

Enjoy!

To see a video of audio palette in action, please go to www.audiopalette.net

Features:
- 4 audio palette sample sets
- Automatic looping with high accuracy timing for perfect loops

St. Nikolaus plays Solaris

flickr set by solaris synth
(click for more)

"While I was working late at the German office, who should drop by but St. Nikolaus! (Nicholas in English.)
You see, in Germany Dec. 6th is celebrated as St. Nikolaus Day. Obviously, he was in the neighborhood, and had heard about the forthcoming Solaris synthesizer. Wanting to get his own private tour, I heard a knock at the door, and a loud, low voice ask if there were any children here. When I opened the door, he started laughing, saying he wanted to see what this Solaris was all about, having heard so much about it himself."

John Bowen Solaris - New FX routing and Input/Output pages

via John Bowen on the John Bowen Synth Design forum, via http://twitter.com/solaris_synth

"The latest OS has a new arrangement for the FX pages, and adds new inputs/outputs assignment pages. I was hoping to get some video showing these before I took off to Germany on Sunday (Feb. 7th), but it may have to wait.

Basically, one of the coolest things about the re-design is that now there are 4 Effects busses (channels), and you can have any output receive any of the FX buss outs. This means you could use the 4 stereo analog output pairs ( (or the S/PDIF) to send out a separate effect (there are currently only 4 effects). Or, you can put any combination of effects in series, however once you use an effect, it is removed from the available 'FX Pool'. You can even put the FX busses in series themselves, so that one set of outputs has just chorus, but another output set has chorus routed into delay (as shown in the pictures below). All in all, an extremely flexible setup!

On the Output page, each Output set is listed with a selected signal source. This source list is as follows:
OFF, Synth, Ext 1/2, Ext 3/4, S/P-DIF, FX Chan 1, FX Chan 2, FX Chan 3, FX Chan 4.

Selecting Synth, for example, will route the dry, direct synth output to the associated Output assignment.

I'll see if I can get a visual of some kind posted before I leave. Busy packing and getting things together today (and I have a gig tonight!)

Synth movie themes from the vault- Francis Monkman (the long good friday) remix

YouTube via mik300z
"Always loved this soundtrack, and its not heard very often. Also very hard to find a stereo recording of it. Francis Monkman was a great synth player and composer. This is a cover, but I kept the original sax part (no synth can replace a real sax played by a real sax player!) Took me a long time to sample it and bring it back into the track, but ableton is one powerful tool. Lots of EQing and compression/delays etc. Hope you like it!
