"An uptempo synthmusic. Again de Doepfer Dark Time sequencer with a 16 step sequence triggering the Moog LP (with the punch of the moogerfooger CP 251) and the Waldorf micro Q. The piano is a combination of the Roland E15 and the Kurzweil micro piano with the accent to the E15. Strings from the Roland Juno 106 and the Korg Lamda. Solo synth also from the 106. Some e-piano from the Yamaha DX 27. A lot of echo's amd reverb.
The title had to do the nice wether today after a rather cold and wet period.

"I made a couple of patches that cause the micron to freeze up every time, to much modulation I think. After it freezes everything stops working; keyboard, knobs, buttons...except the volume knob, but the sound continues to play and evolve randoml. All sounds are from the micron, recorded with ableton live, post processing was limited to normalizing the stereo wav file and converting it to mp3.

I did some more takes with better stereo spread on the micron patches. I also added a touch of reverb, these sound much better. Check out the "Freeze Mode (noise)" player here:

Just finished repairing the kitten , very impressed with the synths modulation layout and nice fat complex VCO that can do 1 and 2 octaves sub-oscillator. I really like the mixer style waveform layout. Compared to the Arp Odyssey I like the way that the modulation controls are rotary knobs so it looks much simpler! shame they only released 2 synths (excluding that weird Voyetra one). Each channel is a mini analogue synth drum module, capable of producing a wide range of electronic drum sounds, and since every parameter is defined by a knob, it's highly tweakable. The 5 drum channels also have their own level and pan pots, and the signals are mixed to a pair of stereo outputs with Left/Right volume control. Each channel has 9 controls (8 knobs & 1 switch): -SENSITIVITY controls pickup/trigger in sensitivity -OSCILLATOR DECAY controls decay time of the synth oscillator -NOISE DECAY controls decay time of the noise sound -SWEEP alters oscillator frequency -PITCH changes oscillator pitch -BALANCE controls balance between oscillator/noise -VOLUME output volume to mixer -PAN L/R balance control, also allow dual output on L/R jacks"

Befaco BF-20 vs Korg MS-20

YouTube Uploaded by jorditalleda on Jun 25, 2011

"Two weeks ago, at our workshop in Barcelona, we started assembling the first units of our latest module: a very faithful replica of the legendary LP/HP filter of the MS 20.

The most demanding part of the design was reproducing the Korg 35, a dedicated IC found at the heart of the original filter. To be able to clone the filter, we first had to clone the IC! It consists of a mini PCB, so small we had to use SMD components for the first time (the people that attended our workshop had a blast! )

The clone of the chip is 100% compatible with the original filter, so it can be used as a part for repairing real MS-20′s!"

Via Befaco:

"Our friend Jordi made a video of these two analog titans challenging each other, face to face… he does get the Befaco modular, although with a very different architecture from the MS-20, to reproduce some of its most characteristic sounds quite faithfully.

Here’s what Jordi told us about the patch:

-BF-20 volume almost at maximum (the horizontal pot’s level line pointing to the right);
-HPF up, LPF down;
-From the Envelope Generator I sent an env. to two attenuators. They then go to the CV control inputs of the LPF and HPF. This way I can simulate the function of the MS-20 that allows you to adjust the amount of ADSR that affects each of the filters;
-I used a separate envelope for the VCA, and gave it more Decay than the filters;
-I used a VCO + sub-oscilator, to get a good squarewave;
-The other VCO went directly to the filter input, summing a sawtooth to the squarewave. This way I can get the two VCO’s to sound a bit detubned, as is often the case with the MS-20. If I use only one VCO, the result isn’t as fat as the MS-20."

DRUMAXX SOUNDS

"The Drumaxx percussion modelling instrument gives you total control over 16 physically modelled drum pads that can be routed to independent outputs for external effects processing.

Great, but why should you care when the internet is awash with drum samples? In two words, expressive control. Once a drum sound is recorded, the performance and modulation options are limited to filtering, volume, or similar 1-dimensional effects. When a single drum sample is triggered in a roll, you get the familiar 'machine-gun' effect and it just sounds mechanical. Multi-sampled, multi-layered drums can overcome this limitation but need multi-megabyte or even Gigabyte! drum libraries. Even then, you are still limited to the sounds originally recorded.

Drumaxx is not based on samples or even commonly used 'synthesis'

techniques, where oscillators are mixed and the result is always 'electronic'. Drumaxx uses modelling algorithms to create bass drums, hi-hats, snares, realistic and electronic sounds too. But what about the traditional 'Achilles' heel' of synthesis, cymbals? Drumaxx creates cymbals and metallic percussion also."

Clacktronics Wasp Drive - Synthesizer Filter in a Box

via this auction
"Protect your ears!! The Wasp Drive is a unique distortion / filter / auto-wah device and the name is no coincidence; It uses the same VCF model as from the legendary EDP wasp but adding tweaks and modifications to really bring out the noise!! Built into a robust folded aluminum case, with large chunky layout , an intuitive layout, LED rate indicator and rubber feet, it is an excellent choice for live performance as well as experimentation in the studio.

Controls:

Cutoff - Adjusts the cutoff point of the filter
'Q' - This is resonance, at max it self oscillates
Response - Has Low Pass, Band Pass or High Pass option
LFO speed - speed of the cutoff modulating LFO
LFO Depth - depth at which the LFO modulates the cutoff
Gain - capable of driving the input up-to 10x

A diverse filter capable of adding grit and punch to drums, ambient sweeps, mellow wah and plain crazy noise.

Customer Quotes

"When it's fed a signal from my korg M500 or Yamaha cs01 it makes the filter sweeps sound incredibly waspy - especially with the resonance up high. I'm using it live with my band in conjunction with a Copilotfx Molecule (a tremolo pedal where the rate of modulation depends on the frequencies present at the input). The ability to drive the input is fantastic and I've found that this alone can give quite a unique sounding distortion. It sounds great with my Casio SK-8 as well, playing the 'organ' preset driven very hard into the pedal, and using the bandpass with high resonance and lfo modulation has produced some incredible rhythmic textures." - Chris le Monde of CLOUT!

To keep the price down and because it uses a standard tip negative 9v input that guitar pedals use (such as Boss, Ibanez, EHX etc ) it does not come with its own power supply. But they are available at a discounted extra cost of £6 for a UK power adapter and £10 for USA, Australia and EU power adapter.

Kawai K4R 16Bit Digital Synthesizer

via this auction

"FROM THE OWNER'S MANUAL

The K4 is a 61 key touch-sensitive synthesizer equipped with a DMS (Digital Multi Spectrum) tone generator capable of up to 16 notes of polyphony when set at two Sources per tone. The K4r is a 19 inch, 2U rack-mount module version.

256 high quality internal waveforms The K4/K4r has 96 CD (Digital Cyclic) waveforms composed of as many as 128 harmonics, and a total of 160 PCM waveforms, for a total of 256 waveforms. Because the K4/K4r's internal waveforms are reproduced using 16-bit quantization, noise and distortion are virtually inaudible.

DRUM Section
The K4/K4r has its own DRUM Section which can be controlled independently of SINGLE Patches or the eight Sections of a MULTI Patch. The 61 keys from C1-C6 on the keyboard may be assigned freely to produce these tones.

Internal EFFECT (K4) and mising capability (K4r)
The K4 has 16 types of internal effects, including Reverb, Delay and Overdrive, etc.. In MULTI PLAY, the depth of the effect may be set for each tone.

Realistic touch response
The K4/K4r has the feeling of an acousic piano keyboard, a feature which has made the Kawai K series so popular. In addition, Velocity, Aftertouch, Release Velocity and Keyboard Scaling features allow the expression of the most minute touch on the keyboard.

MULTI PLAY capability
Eight SINGLE tones may be reproduced by the DMS tone generator, freely combining the Layer, Velocity Switch and Split functions, enabling far more beautiful layered and split sounds than have ever been possible before.

Variable Multi-Timbral capability
In the MULTI PLAY mode, each tone may be set to a specific MIDI channel, allowing the K4/K4r to function as though it were eight MIDI tone generators (or nine with the DRUM Section). The Variable Multi-Timbral function also allows the voices of each Section to be played simultaneously.

INDIVIDUAL OUTPUT function (K4r only) The K4r is equipped not only with two stereo output jacks, but with six separate output jacks as well to allow the connection of external effects units to create high quality sound.

LINK
Eight patches from those in the unit may be selected and stored together. This function is used, for instance, when multiple tones are to be used in sequence. When arranged in the order in which they are to be called up, the operator may easily change tones from one to the next while playing.

MIDI
By connecting an external MIDI device to the MIDI jack, the K4/K4r may be used as a tone generator module with drums, or to control the external MIDI device.

Card
A card permits an increased number of tones to be placed in memory. One card can hold 64 SINGLE Patches, 64 MULTI Patches, the DRUM Section and EFFECT or OUTPUT Settings."

A6 Creamier sound

A6 Creamier sound by CoolColJ
"I have found the Andromeda's oscillators have a tendency to lock to each other and phase cancel. A byproduct of the too accurate auto tuning perhaps, which tunes every octave on the board. So even when you detune then oscillators they still don't sound quite right.

Contrast that with old analog synths which usually have a single scaling trim pot for the whole keyboard range. And they are never tight because of that, the top and bottom of the keyboard is always out a bit, but they sound better for it.

Here is a way to get that creamier sound out of the A6 - knock the scaling out by modulating oscillator pitch with key number!
+0.02, with an offset of -0.01 does the trick

as heard here :)

Soundcloud's processing did some weird crap to the audio :/"

Update: an another tip via Steve on the A6 list:

"Another good, standard trick is to go to View Oscillator, select nzext, select red noise, and then set it to about .36 on LinFM, PWM or one of the other choices there. This uses slight randomization to modulate the oscillator and adds a little more "natural imperfection" into the sound. It'll warm up almost any patch, and gets rid of what my brain translates into, for some reason, the "straw"-like quality of the A6's sound (straw as in hay)."

"Synthesizing a kick drum with Surge VSTi, using the FM2 module. The principles are applicable to any decent synthesizer.

The Kick is basically a sine wave pith through a short, steep pitch envelope. Some frequency modulation (FM) is added to emphasise the attack. An LFO is applied to pitch to give a little wobble.

Using these parameters it's possible to get a wide variety of tight, punchy electronic kicks. Why waste time browsing samples? Make your own!
