This song was made only with a Roland Juno 60 and a Roland JD 800. All strings are coming from the JD 800 and the moogish Leadsound and the arpeggio comes from the Juno 60. Other sounds like Drums and FX are from NI Battery. Some FX are generated with an ARP Axxe and the Juno 60. The guitar was recorded live."

Roland SH 101 the internal sequencer HQ Sound

Published on Feb 11, 2013 MrSynthmania·16 videos

"A few minutes listening to the amazing sound of the Roland SH-101. It has an internal sequencer, which can play only up to 100 notes, but it makes much fun. Listen to its rough and bright sound. I love that filter, which is a self-oscillating LPF. And still remember...it´s monophonic. The sound is really fat. Most Musicians use the Roland SH-101 for Basslines, but there is much more it can do."

It has very fast Envelopes and 2 Oscillators. On the backside you can find CV-In and Gate-In, which makes it easy to use with MIDI. Arturia SPARK Updated to Version 1.6.1

"Arturia’s SPARK software engine gathers steam to Version 1.6.1

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to release Version 1.6.1 of SPARK, the latest software update to its SPARK Creative Drum Machine and SparkLE Creative Drum Machine hybrid hardware/software beat production centres, on March 25...

Quite simply, SPARK Creative Drum Machine revolutionised hands-on beat-making by cleverly combining TAE® (True Analog Emulation) synthesis, sample playback (with multiple layering modes and post- processing), and physical modelling technologies with the intuitive workflow of a hardware drum machine upon its June 2011 launch; NAMM 2013 subsequently saw Arturia taking this concept to the masses by introducing SparkLE Creative Drum Machine, an all-new, ultra-portable package sharing the same SPARK software engine.

Now, thanks to Version 1.6.1 of that already super-smart SPARK software engine, Arturia has improved the functionality of both SPARK Creative Drum Machine and SparkLE Creative Drum Machine as follows.

Firstly, SparkLE Creative Drum Machine owners benefit from an added accent button in the GUI and an added latch mode for the instrument FX Pad, which, when activated, assigns the P1 and P2 knobs to the instrument parameters (Volume/Pan, Cutoff Resonance, Aux1/Aux2), while pressing any of the three XY Instrument buttons turns off latch mode (returning the P1 and P2 knobs to their previous assignations).

Joint benefits also abound for SPARK Creative Drum Machine and SparkLE Creative Drum Machine users, including improving the MIDI Clock output, together with several bug fixes.

So, thanks to those Version 1.6.1 improvements, the time has truly come to ignite rhythmic creativity with SPARK Creative Drum Machine and SparkLE Creative Drum Machine. Super-size beat-making with the original or add a little sparkle? The choice is out there!

The SPARK Version 1.6.1 update can be downloaded directly for free from here"

super mario spacetime organ (illucia & soundplane)

super mario spacetime organ (illucia & soundplane) from paperkettle on Vimeo.

From the man that brought us the illucia

"Interested in my work? http://chrisnovello.com or http://twitter.com/paperkettle

In this video, I directly manipulate the RAM state of Nintendo's Super Mario Brothers to transform it from a game into a strange instrument. I use two hardware controllers: illucia (a patchbay instrument I designed that lets me connect computer software with cables), and the Soundplane (an amazing multitouch surface by Madrona Labs).

I begin by playing the game as one normally would, just using buttons on illucia.. but I also have access to the game's memory, so I use the Y axis on the Soundplane to alter the value in the memory address that determines Mario's Y position onscreen. This is how I make Mario fly and hover during the playthrough.

Also, before I start playing, notice that I flip a switch on illucia. This triggers recording — not video, but actually recording the entire memory state of the NES for each game frame. Think about it - Mario's universe is held in RAM, which the NES uses to draw the game world for each frame. By saving the entire state of NES memory for every frame, I'm able to go back to any moment in Mario's life. Sort of like a Super Mario time machine.

So then I use the X-axis of the Soundplane to sweep through the timeline of Mario's universe.

Not only that, but the Soundplane is multitouch, so I use a second finger to specify start and endpoints in a playback loop. This is similar to the way samplers and granular synths work, but for recordings of the entire memory state of the NES rather than audio data. Conceptually, it is like Super Mario meets Groundhog Day. Mario's universe computer / time machine gets caught in hellish loops.

Then I use illucia to send alien data into Mario's universe, which makes for all sorts of audiovisual insanity amidst the spacetime loops. I found some memory addresses that produce interesting results, so I use illucia to pump them with unexpected data. This is sort of like circuit bending, but in a protected sandbox - at any point I can revert back to the clean recording of RAM states (aka moments in Mario's universe).

At that point I try to go back to "playing" the game, watching Mario navigate a melting world of glitched-out ephemera. Toward the end of the video I use a pair of rubberband mallets on the Soundplane to jump around in Mario's timeline, all while illucia is left pouring a heavy stream of alien data into Mario's RAM state. I eventually (accidentally/luckily) land at a place that triggers the game over music, and decide to end the take.

=====================

Disclaimer:

I don't condone piracy or the distribution of Nintendo's IP. I'm posting this video as part of a critical-cultural project. Further - although the emulator tools I used to make this performance are fully legal, I'm not distributing any other materials related to making these interventions into NES games, so please don't ask. The video is shown with the intention of stimulating critical thought about the role of software in our lives.

By showing that there are other ways one could interact with this well-known cultural artifact, hopefully I can inspire others to consider: Who decides how and what we see in a computer program? What is hidden? What sorts of strange other things lurk beneath the surface of our trained expectations?

What if we lived in a culture that deeply embraced the expressive possibilities of computer programs? What if we encouraged curiosity about the interior of the systems that compose game worlds? Is that curiosity and critical inquiry itself not a form of play?

Indeed there are platforms that embrace this sort of approach, but many don't. In fact, many close it off. What if we prioritized this sort of inquiry more? Might we find new frontiers for communication or even human knowledge and representation? What is a videogame, and how can it relate to all this?"

It took instruments like the MiniMoog or the Arp Odessy to bring synthsesizer sounds to the performance stage, but these instruments, since their capabilities are predefined by the manufacturer, play a minor role in today's modular scene."  Read the full post at AES here.

ARPIE - MIDI Arpeggiator kit

Published on Mar 25, 2013 Jason Hotchkiss·118 videos

"I revised my earlier minimal MIDI arp design to be able to offer it as a DIY electronics kit.
Currently running as a fundraised on Tindie.. Check the product page on Tindie for a full description https://tindie.com/shops/hotchk155/ar..."

"ARPIE is minimal, compact, hackable MIDI arpeggiator
You may be quite familiar with what a MIDI arpeggiator is, otherwise: An arpeggiator it is a device which takes chords (From a MIDI keyboard, for example) and converts them into rapid sequences of notes, which can then be played through MIDI-compatible synthesizer hardware or software. Arpeggiation is a very common technique in electronica and chiptune music and is an excellent creative technique.

A dedicated hardware arpeggiator is usually something that might set you back a few hundred dollars. With and ARPIE you can build your own fully-featured arpeggiator for a fraction of this cost, and it is designed to be hacker-friendly to boot, utilising Arduino compatible open-source firmware and openly documented hardware design.

In your ARPIE kit you will receive two, high-quality printed circuit boards and all the components and hardware required to assemble the device, including two ready-programmed microcontrollers (Atmega328 and PIC12F1822). PP3 required for battery operation  Soldering is required to complete this kit. Surface-mounts will be pre-soldered so you will only need to fit the through-hole components.

Here is the low-down on what your ARPIE can do:
Arpeggio modes: Up, Down, Pendulum, Random Order, Manual Order
Octave span: 1 – 4 octaves
Note repeat modes: None, Lowest note, Highest note, 3 forward-1 back, 4 forward-2 back
Step length: 1 beat thru 1/128th beat including dotted and triplet time steps
Octave transpose: –2 thru +2 octaves
Chromatic transpose: –3 thru +12 semitones
Chord hold mode: on/off
16 point pattern editor allows you to apply a rhythmic pattern of mutes/rests over the arpeggio. Interactive control over repeating sequence of mutes which does not have to match the arpeggio length, allowing you to create weird and wonderful rhythmic and melodic effects.
MIDI send channel: 1-16
MIDI note velocity: 0-127 in 16 increments
MIDI note gate length: 15 increments up and tied-note mode
MIDI Synch mode: None/Master/Slave (can receive MIDI clock from IN or SYNCH sockets) Internal tempo generator for Master/standalone use
MIDI panic (all notes off) feature
MIDI thru on controllers (e.g. Mod wheel, pitch bend)
Performance possible without attached MIDI controller by selecting CMaj/CMin/C7/Cmaj7/Cmin7/Random chord insert and using transpose features to change to noother root note
Minimal, but easy-to-use control surface is based on 16 data LEDS, 16 data buttons, 13 command buttons Three standard 5-pin DIN sockets for MIDI IN, MIDI OUT, SYNC IN
Receive, Transmit, Beat Clock and Chord Hold LEDs on control surface, plus firmware diagnostic/power LEDs on main board.
Integral 9V PP3 battery holder and 9V DC socket (centre positive 2.1mm barrel)
Small size (98mm x 87mm x 35mm approx dimensions) and light weight (approx 125g without battery)

The basic ARPIE device is a minimal bare-bones design, however it is designed to be easy to customise (e.g. to install the electronics inside a case or to build an alternative control surface)

ARPIE is the latest in a line of similar arpeggiators I have created, originally inspired by the RPG-8 module in Propellerheads Reason - which was of course itself inspired by several classic hardware argeggiators... so in effect it is hardware emulating software emulating hardware!

Once the fundraiser ends I will need to get the printed circuit boards manufactured. I will endeavour to dispatch all orders received during the fundraiser within 4 weeks of the target being met.

PLEASE NOTE: In case it was not clear from the above - ARPIE is a MIDI Arpeggiator and requires separate synthesizer software or hardware to be connected to it to make sound. It does not make any sound by itself!"

Each banks of 16 channels has their own separate CV and Portamento Outputs, (all output jacks are 1/4 inch Switchcraft). The "32/Mix" switch will allow you to use the dual 16 channel banks at the "Mix" CV/Output or switch to 32 position to have all channels present at the "Mix" output jack.

"Pitch" control will allow you to bring the Voltage up or down slightly (at the same time) for both banks.

Each channel has a 3 position switch, in the "Up" position, that channel is on, when set to the "Center" that channel is "Off", when you set a channel switch in the "Down" position that will tell the sequencer to "Reset" when it reaches that channel. If more then 1 switch is in the "Down" position the sequencer will use the 1st "Down" switch it scans too, and resets.

There is a "Start" push button that will allow you to Start or Stop the sequencer anywhere between channels."
