An Audio Interview with Robert Moog Circa 1980

Back on May 23, 2012 WNYC posted the above interview with Bob Moog from 1980 on NPR member station, WQXR's This is My Music (WQXR featured Clara Rockmore on theremin only a year earlier).  The interview was shared in memory and celebration of Bob Moog's birthday, May 23.

"The Archives Department celebrates Robert Moog's 78th birthday with this 1980s episode of WQXR's This is My Music. Host Lloyd Moss talks with the inventor and musical pioneer and plays selections from Moog's library of compositions and influences. The program includes a virtuosic performance of Wieniawski's Violin Concerto No. 2 adapted for theremin and piano.

[Please note: The featured audio is a transfer from a cassette tape. Quality varies throughout the recording]

Dr. Robert 'Bob' Arthur Moog (May 23, 1934 – August 21, 2005) may be best known as the inventor of the Moog Synthesizer, one of the most widely used and popular instruments of its kind. In this episode of This is My Music, Moog discusses the origins of his musical education, his inventions, and the recordings he enjoys most, which include the following:

Sinfonia, from Cantata No. 29, by Johann Sebastian Bach
Excerpt from Violin Concerto No. 2, by Henryk Wieniawski (adapted for the theremin), performed by Clara Rockmore with Nadia Reisenberg on piano
Excerpt from Requiem, by Gabriel Fauré, performed by Lucia Popp and Simon Estes
Fantasie Impromptu, by Fréderic Chopin, performed by Murray Perahia
'Incantation,' from Beauty in the Beast, by Wendy Carlos performed by Wendy Carlos"

"For sale is my Yamaha FS1R. It's fully functional and in excellent shape. Check out the pictures to make sure you like it. There's still the original plastic over the screen, so screen is protected and in perfect shape underneath. It's also super bright. This is an amazing synth, considered the ultimate FM synth Yamaha ever offered, 8 operators and very unique formant filters, this rack will give you unheard of sounds you can't get anywhere else. I don't think even software plugins have caught up with all the capabilities this unit offers. A must have for modern edm productions needing that unique edge. Don't miss out!"

test of drum sequencer that uses a raspberry pi and launchpad

Published on Apr 25, 2016 NoizeHack

"Testing the sequencer I wrote in node.js that runs on a raspberry pi and uses a novation launchpad as a control interface. You do not need to use a desktop or laptop computer, just the raspberry pi that is inside a metal box the size of a guitar pedal. It can send trigger pulses out to trigger modular synths and drum machines and can also send midi over usb to trigger drum machines with usb midi.

This project is completely open source and you can build your own hardware and download the code and build your own. This is using a raspberry pi 3 and launchpad mk 2. There is more detailed info in the github readme file.

Kraftwerk Cover "Tour de France" Space Disco (w. Minilogue Machinedrum Volca etc)

Published on Apr 25, 2016 Shimanski Beats

"This time I tried something I have never done before: a Kraftwerk cover! The song is "Tour de France" from 1984. However the version I made doesn't really sound like Kraftwerk; it is rather oriented to the Space Disco style, some very synthesizerladen post 70s disco music.

The lead sequences are played live (unfortunately with some mistakes here and there), the rest is controled by the sequencer of the Electribe Sampler and the Machinedrum, respectively.
Whilst the performance is live and "dawless" (check out the Facebook group on Dawless jamming!), it was recorded with Cubase - no post production, though.
Instruments used:
Korg Minilogue (Lead 1)
Clavia Nord Lead 2x (Lead 2+3)
Arturia Microbrute (arpeggio)
MAM MB 33 retro (main bass)
Korg Volca bass (additional bass)
Elektron Machinedrum MK2 (Drums
Waldorf Streichfett (phaser strings)
External FX: Lexicon MX200, TC Electronic M One XL, TC Electronic M350, DBX 166XL

Thanks for watching!
Comments, likes, and subscriptions are always very welcome!

Rare Vintage Wasatch Music Systems - WMS-1020A Analog Sequencer

via this auction

"This is a very rare (less then 500 produced) Wasatch Music Systems WMS-1020A Analog Sequencer. This bit of gear comes out of the 1970's and is quite rare based on production numbers and definitely has a vintage look and feel to it.

Unit is in good condition with scuffs, wear, marks and scratches on it. The original rubber feet fell off, I put four new fresh rubber feet on the bottom to keep the unit still while it's standing. The sides are faux wood; apparently the cost of producing oak panels on these was too expensive so the manufacturer decided to use plastic finished as wood.

The unit does power on, although my knowledge of these devices is limited. Mechanically, all knobs, switches and buttons are functioning. When I move the sequence length knob and then press the "step" button, I can see the LED step in sequence for the number that I selected. If you press the reset button, it moves the LED indicator back to first spot. That's about all I was able to do with this. I don't know how it works further, but from what I understand this would be hooked up to a synthesizer to produce audio."

Electronic Voyager: Discovering Bob Moog Documentary From the Makers of I Dream of Wires & the BMF

via The Bob Moog Foundation

"We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with Waveshaper Media, the producers of the acclaimed modular documentary “I Dream of Wires”, on a new film about Bob Moog, Electronic Voyager.

A Kickstarter campaign in support of Electronic Voyager has begun.

In association with the Wave Shaper, we aim to create a definitive and personal documentary about the life of Bob Moog. Through the eyes of our Executive Director and Bob’s own daughter, Michelle Moog-Koussa – also a dedicated Moog archivist and historian – we will give viewers an insight into the man behind the iconic Moog brand.

Electronic Voyager takes us on a sonic journey into the often unpredictable life and stunning brilliance of Bob Moog, a man who ‘fell backwards on a banana peel’ into the music instrument business, as well as the psychedelic world of the 1960s music scene. Bob unwittingly revolutionized the face of music, and helped birth an enduring industry.

With Michelle Moog-Koussa as our guide, we are in a very unique position to tell Bob Moog’s story in a new and profound way – from the perspective of his own daughter, who has not only a deep personal connection to Bob Moog, but also a firm dedication to his work and legacy. Bob’s friends, associates and admirers open up when they speak to Michelle about her father, leading to uniquely candid, revealing and joyous stories and insights about Bob Moog.

Electronic Voyager documents a special personal journey for Michelle, to trace her father’s iconic story – visiting the places and meeting the people who were a part of Moog’s history. With exclusive access to unseen family photos and rare historical artifacts from the Bob Moog Foundation Archives, Electronic Voyager opens a window for the outside world to better understand the man behind the legendary Moog synthesizer.

Support the Kickstarter campaign here.

The recent, tragic passing of Bob Moog’s close friend and important collaborator, Keith Emerson – perhaps the most iconic Moog keyboardist – was just another reminder of how important it is to document Bob Moog’s crucial chapter in the history of electronic music, NOW. We are turning to Kickstarter – a direct link to Bob Moog’s friends, admirers and fans – to help us get to work on this important documentary as soon as possible.

Confirmed participants include:

Early electronic music pioneers: Herb Deutsch, Morton Subotnick, Bernie Krause (Beaver & Krause, Moog modular session musician – George Harrison, The Doors), Joel Chadabe, David Borden (Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company).

Contemporary Moog musicians: Moby, Adrian Utley (Portishead, Moog Ensemble).

Friends and music industry contemporaries: Dave Smith (Sequential Circuits), Tom Oberheim, Roger Linn, Dave Rossum (E-mu), Mark Vail (Keyboard Magazine), David Mash (Berkelee College of Music), Dominic Milano (Keyboard Magazine), Wayne Kirby (University of North Carolina – Asheville).

Session musicians, composers, technicians: Patrick Gleeson (Herbie Hancock, film composer), Greg Phillenganes (Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson), Edd Kalehoff (tv/film composer), Michael Boddicker (Michael Jackson, film composer), Will Alexander (Keith Emerson’s synth tech).

Moog employees/collaborators: Bill Hemsath, David VanKoevering, Tom Rhea, Roger Luther, Greg Hockman, Tom Gullo, Dale Ong.

As with any great Kickstarter campaign, we are offering a host of exciting perks, many of which are limited to the campaign and are not available elsewhere. Read all about them and get more details about the project here:

Please join us on this incredible journey, the sonic journey of Bob Moog!"

Vintage Moog Sonic Six 6 Analog Keyboard Synthesizer SN 1972

via this auction

"I bought this keyboard at a school surplus sale about 10 years ago but it wasn't really what I needed. I only played with it a few times and it's been in the closet ever since. When you power it up it makes old school sci-fi movie type sounds that change somewhat when you play the different keys. The sounds remind me of the sounds of UFO alien effects. Turning the knobs and sliders change the pitch and effects. I'm sure it needs to be serviced to be fully usable, but I really don't know how it's supposed to be or how it's supposed to work. The sound is very clear and strong, but I don't know anything else about it. I'm also sure I have no idea how to use it. Everything to me seems to work as it should but again I have no way to know, so it's being sold as-is for parts or repair, with no warranty of any kind. It was evidently well taken care of. Other than the case having scuff and scratches and painted letters on top, it's in really good shape with no cracks or breaks. On the inside someone engraved a school I.D. very discreetly on the left side area near the controls by the keyboard."

The Ondes Martenot had a ring on a string pitch controller as you can see pictured in Karen Evil's design to the left.  It acts much like a ribbon controller but instead of pressing down you place your finger in the ring and hope it doesn't get sliced off. jk.  :)

There is also the gate/trigger pedal contraption to trigger notes as you can see in the video.

The focus is how the two Mother-32s tempos are synced with each other. I'm also sending a clock to the modular synths (off camera) where I'm using Hexinverter Mutant Bassdrum, Mutant Snare, Mutant HiHats and Mutant Clap modules -- adding in Malekko's Varigate 4 for the trills in the Mutant Clap.

The Moog Sub Phatty's unique scream comes from the software editor program with a library of presets, one called "Death of Dr. Who".
