Ghost in the MS2000R

Published on Oct 21, 2013 Gary Kibler·1 video

"Rescued this late 90s Korg rackmount from the junk heap. It reminded me that, given this world of virtual PC and tablet synths, nothing brings as much joy as actual knob-twiddling. My ultimate goal with any new music toy is to somehow get it to play itself, i.e., conjure up the ghost in the machine, which, with its mod sequencer and virtual patch bay, this one does pretty well."

"Spaces in Places" Yamaha MU80 (Percussion) + Nord Lead 1

Published on Oct 21, 2013 Time Synth Project·46 videos

"Here's a simple 8 bar vamp with elaborate percussion I composed on Finale. Nord Lead begins playing at (0:40).
I created controller patches for the Nord and MU80 on the Nord Modular G1. There are no Nord Modular sounds in this, although it was used as the main controller. Whoever messes around with their portamento settings on their MU80? Easily when the midi CCs are mapped to a controller. Also switched in and out of 'modulated delay' preset on the Lexicon MX300. I didn't want the delay on during the complex drumfills."

Synth-o-Mania Event this Sunday in Texas & New ARP Odyssey Sub-Osc Kit

via Syntaur:  "If you are in the Austin/San Antonio area, we are hosting the second annual Synth-o-Mania at Syntaur on Sunday, October 27. There will be a ton of really cool analog synths on hand, some swap-meet action, etc. I've gotten a pretty good number of RSVPs, so there should be a plethora of synth geeks to mix and mingle with.

One fun thing we will be showing off is our next product, an Arp Odyssey Sub-Oscillator kit. It adds square-wave sub-oscillators to each of the two VCO's, making for a really Xtra Large sound! We will be selling this in kit form, or as a mod that we install here.  More details on the event are here:  www.syntaur.com/mania.html

Much of the hoopla will be outside, so in the event of rain (or the likelihood of rain), we will reschedule."

Retronyms AudioCopy demo

"AudioCopy makes it easy to paste sound in hundreds of compatible apps.

In order to keep some of the best features of AudioCopy in iOS 7, we added a free standalone app. This acts as a "sound pasteboard" and seamlessly serves all the copied content to 3rd party apps. The AudioCopy app sits in the background and quietly serves the sound content to apps as they request it. If you don't have the AudioCopy app installed, AudioCopy/AudioPaste still work using the general pasteboard."

"The e560 is a triple-mode effects module: thru-zero frequency shifter, phaser and ring mod. what sets the e560 apart from other dsp effect modules is the unique carrier wave morphing feature. traditional frequency shifters and phasers use sine waves as the carrier/modulator, but the e560 has 8 different carrier waves that can be continuously cross-faded to create never-before heard sound scapes. the 8 carriers are specifically selected to give the widest sonic palette, from simple frequency shifts to 64-note ‘pattern sequences' to extreme harmonic content.

The 3 operating modes are:
Shift: a frequency shifter that can shift thru-zero with 2 simultaneous outputs (down and up). like traditional frequency shifters, a sine carrier will generate a smooth shift but the e560’s 7 other waves will generate a vast array of harmonic content and even patterns of evolving timbral shift.

Rm: a standard ring modulator (4-quadrant multiplying vca) with a twist: the 2 outputs are always forced into quadrature (90 degree phase shift). the 8 carriers can produce everything from tremolo effects to gating to high degrees of distortion.

Phase: this is an e560 exclusive mode. the audio input is applied to an 8-stage all-pass network. the 2 audio outputs are in quadrature, but in turn phase shifted from 0 to 360 degrees relative to the input. not only that, the vector the phase shift follows is the data in the carrier wave table. the phase shifting can be linear (saw wave), traditional (triangle) or bouncing all over the place (64-random phase waveform).

Not only do you have full control over the effect, but also the wet/dry mix and applying either positive or phase-inverted (negative) feedback) this introduces peaking at certain harmonics or cancellation of those harmonics. applying a slow lfo to the feedback cv can produce a wide range of constantly changing spectral content.

There are 4 cvs available to control the e560 in real-time. all 4 of the panel controls have a corresponding cv input, so that you can turn all 4 knobs at once by applying 4 cvs.

The e560 is another unique dsp-based module that has no equal in the modular world, in any format. if you are 'stuck in a musical rut' and are looking for a new module with a wide range of sounds, the e560 might be what you are looking for.

Specs:
size: 3u x 14hp (128.5mmx 70.8mm)
depth: 32.5mm
power: +12/+12v @ 90ma, -12v/-15v @ 20ma (supports both motm/frac 4-pin and euro ribbon cables)
frequency shift range: 0hz to +-3000hz
carrier waveforms: sine, triangle, square, saw, 16-point random phase, 64-point random phase, cross-modulated triangle/pulse and 3x sine"

Synthesis Technology E580 Mini Delay Eurorack Module

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The synthesis technology e580 resampling mini-delay emulates the classic sounds of digital, bbd and tape-based delays with 4 parameters under voltage control. the 14hp wide euro module accepts either +-12v euro standard power or +-15v motm/frac power. using a 40mhz dsp and 24-bit codec, the e580 recreates the pitch-shift modulating of bbds with the variable bandwidth and noise floor without costly bbd ics. in tape mode, wow& flutter, tape saturation and non-linear distortion model classic tape units without the bulk and maintenance. there are 2 simultaneous audio outputs: a straight delay and a variable tapped delay. the tap position is a percentage of the main delay time. this allows very short delays (<350us) as well as long delays (750ms). both tap position (‘offset’) and main delay time are voltage-controlled over a -5v to +5v range.

Feedback is jumper-selectable from either the tapped position or the main delay. this flexibility can generate standard ‘rhythmic’ delays (feedback from main delay) or a series of 'pre-delay reflections' (tapped delay) which sound very different from each other."

"The e355 is a 14hp euro module with 2 lfos that use our unique morphing algorithm to create over 10,000 different wave forms. the 2 outputs can vary from 1 cycle in 12 minutes to 1000hz in 2 ranges and the use of a 24mhz 32-bit arm processor allows the frequency to be stable over temperature and during years of use.

It has features to make it useful in both live and studio use. the 2 lfos are "locked" to each other in one of 3 ways, selectable by a panel switch:
lfo2 and lfo1 have independent rates and the same waveshape and phase
lfo2 has independent waveshape but the same rate and phase as lfo1
*lfo1 and lfo2 have the same rate and wave shape but variable phase from 0 -360 degrees
lfo1 can be thought as the ‘master’ lfo as it always has independent rate, fm and morphing. the lfos track 1v/oct and all parameters are under voltage control. there are 2 leds that vary brightness based on output amplitude in 128 levels.

The e355 using the same morphing engine as the e350 morphing terrarium. the transition from one stored wavetable to another is broken down into 4096 calculated waves. there are 3 banks of waves to select from:

Bank a: basic waves in order of harmonic complexity (sine, tri, saw up, saw down, 25/50/75% pulses and noise).
Bank b: the waves in bank a are repeated in frequency as 1x, 2x, 3x, ..8x. this allows the lfos to have a very wide range between them if necessary or to use this as a basic audio oscillator (limited to 1khz).
Bank c: these are the 64 waves in bank c of the e350 (designed by robert rich) to go way beyond the ordinary. sequences of notes, arpeggiation effects, pings, swoops and lattice phase modulation are just some of the delights contained. in the audio range these can be harsh, noisy and crunchy.

There are 2 external inputs to either sync the lfos or to hold ('freeze') the outputs.

Specs:
Cv inputs: -5v to +5v, dc to 8khz.
Frequency range (bank a and c): low (12min/cycle – 2hz) high (8sec/cycle to 124hz)
Frequency range (bank b at 8x settings): low (1.5min/cycle -16hz) high (1hz – 1020hz)
Power supply range: +-9v to +-15v (euro and motm connectors provided)
Power supply current (typical): -12v @12ma +12v @ 32ma
Size: 14hp x 17mm depth behind panel"

"Black Octopus Sound presets Event Horizon - 128 high quality presets for John Bowen Solaris created by Toby Emerson. This soundset offers everything from huge epic pads, long evolving textures, vintage analog style sounds, deep thundering basses, and many other classic leads and keyboard style sounds.

The John Bowen Solaris is simply one of the most fantastic instruments I have ever worked with. Everything about it screams class. From amazing sounding filters to countless oscillator types, I feel after several months of using it I still have not even scratched the surface. The architecture and programming behind it allows for huge sounds which can range from very organic and analog sounding to crisp and precise digital style sounds. The sound quality of this synthesizer is absolutely exceptional and I would highly recommend this synthesizer to any sound designer or professional musician that can budget for it.

All patches are mapped with the joystick controlling the filters. They are best auditioned by leaving the joystick in the middle position and then adjusting it to taste.

I have spent several months creating these patches for the Solaris users and offer them as a free download. However if you feel like they are of value to you I would love a donation or please pick up one of our sample packs as a way to say thanks and to support the creation of future sounds.

A little bit of compression and additional reverb by Valhalla Room has been added."

Wutierson Custom KORG Replacement Chips for 700, 700S & 800DV

via Toni Gutiérrez Ortiz on Facebook

"Good news for all owners and fans of the first Korg synthesizers : 700, 700S and 800DV!"

"Now available replacements for Korg custom chips! http://wutierson.com/en/news/115-keio-replacements Good news for all owners and fans of the first Korg synthesizers : 700, 700S and 800DV! Now available in the store Wutierson replacements for Korg Keio IC TS200011 for the VCO and Keio IC TS201012 for VCF. Inside the old synthesizers we can find a pair of sealed modules at the VCO core and at the VCF "Traveler " which were manufactured by Korg exclusively for those models. The problem came years later when for some reason a module failed and could not get the same part , unless destroying other synthesizer that uses it. Colin Fraser in 2010 did a great job making reverse engineering of each module , so at least, you could start to make a replacement with the right components, to avoid "sacrifice" of other old Korg synthesizers. Colin's work has been a big help to start making these replacement modules . We recommend to visit his website to learn more about their interesting work . http://www.colinfraser.com/ Now it will be much easier to repair one of those lovely synthesizers. Using Wutierson replacements you can avoid spend time with design/making dedicated PCB , avoid spend time looking for the parts, avoid spend time with select/match components to ensure an exact performance like the old IC's. The replacements are ready to install, just unsolder the defect old IC, put and solder the new replacement and continue playing! saving much time in the repair work."

This is the first Wutierson post.

AM8328 The Mirage Filter
"This module is based around the CEM3328 4-pole Low Pass Filter chip that was released in 1984, as one of the last filter chips and with some great features. It has differential signal inputs, an accurate exponential scale over 14 octaves and voltage controlled resonance. It has a unqiue feature, the signal level is automatically increased as the resonance goes up, thereby avoiding the usual signal level dropping off as resonance comes in. The CEM3328 was late onto the analog stage, just before digital filters appeared, so it only made it into the BIT01 and Ensoniq Mirage (and a few drum machines). So this chip has never really seen action, and was never under analog pot control, just lonely digital paranmeter access! In the Mirage it was not even allowed to oscillate…..We just love giving it a new lease of life in a new analog module!"

My worst organ! & the Ringo Rythm Machine

Published on Oct 21, 2013 organfairy·393 videos

"This can only be described as my worst organ.

But nonetheless there is funny story behind it: I bought it at a charity sale for 10dkr (approximatly 2US$) in 1997 and transported it home on my bicycle - some 15km. There were all kind of defects inside: The previous owner had unsuccesfully tried to build in a speaker output with a short circuit as the result. That had fried the amplifier and the amplifier had overloaded the power supply so it didn't work either. Most of the trimmers on the tone generator was cracked or broken off, and there was a broken trace in the circuit board of the rhythm unit.
But a couple of days later it all worked.

The song is called "Der er noget galt i Danmark" (Something is wrong in Denmark) and was a big hit for Danish singer John Mogensen in the early 1970's. The rhythm and melody is played on the Ringo. The other notes are from the Elgam Grand Gala."

This is the first Ringo post.

polimorph - analog generative synth sounds for Elektron Analog 4

polimorph - analog generative synth sounds pt 2

"morphing between kits on the Analog Four synth.
The kits themselves had been created by interpolating factory preset sounds with this app.

The app interactively sculpts new sounds by interpolating user sounds, combining them into kits and sending them to the analog synthesizer at screen refresh rate (60 kits per second) via MIDI SysEx.

All sounds are based on sounds a user has created and sent to the app, so there is no randomness, but human intervention with the app is a guarantee for very unexpected recombinations.

The Analog Four plays its own sequence, with the app being controlled via MIDI CC - in the case of this video, the faders react to knob tweaks and LFOs from a Machinedrum's MIDI sequencer, which is also synced to the Analog Four's sequencer. quite frankly this is a blast."
