Announcing Cocteau, a Mod PCB for the YOCTO 808 Clone

Published on Apr 3, 2017 effegee7

Update: you can sign up for the kit here. You can reach Autonomik Circuits at autonomikcircuits@gmail.com.

Taking the 808 to a whole new level in tweakability. Full details further below. First the playlist for the videos above:

1. Cocteau demo (groove + mods)

"Cocteau (by Autonomik Circuits)-- overlay mod PCB for YOCTO v1.0 analog drum machine

Cocteau PCB fits over the top of the YOCto main PCB, adding 34 pots and 24 switches to the front panel to modify the original 808 sounds, plus it adds a second RS-CL and MA circuit hardwired to the YOCTO's Trig-1 and Trig-2.

This video demos the following:

- CH Decay (short)
- BD Tune (low)
- CP Filter is turned high and clap density increased to mostly eliminate the Clap sound, leaving just the Reverb
- CB Long Decay, OSC's tuned
- LT Reverb Off & On
- CL-2 2nd switch (the RS-CL DPDT switch split into two SPDT's) activated to create a CR-78-type RS sound

Front panel is laser-cut resin prototype of enclosure to be made by Kacper Pawluk"

2. Cocteau- RS-CL 2 + CP mods

"This video demos the additional RS-CL 2 voice on the Cocteau PCB, as well as some of the CP mods

The DPDT slide switch between the RS and CL sounds of the Cocteau's RS-CL 2 circuit has been split into individual SPDT switches to allow for variation of the CL sound as follows:

Both switches down = RS sound
Both switches up = CL sound
Left up, right down = CL sound altered s\to sound more like striking a glass bottle, not a wood block
Left down, right up = CL sound reminiscent of the CR-78 RS sound(?)"

3. RS-CL 2 & MA-2

"This video demos the additional RS-CL 2 and MA-2 voices on the Cocteau PCB, allowing for simultaneous sequencing of RS & CL and CP & MA sounds.

The DPDT slide switch between the RS and CL sounds of the Cocteau's RS-CL 2 circuit has been split into individual SPDT switches to allow for variation of the CL sound as follows:

Full details via effegee:

"Cocteau is placed over the YOCTO's front panel PCB to add 34 pots and 24 slide switches for modification of the YOCTO drum voices. Cocteau also adds duplicate RS-CL and MA circuits (RS-CL 2 & MA-2) hardwired to YOCTO's Trig-1 and Trig-2 switched jacks, allowing simultaneous sequencing of RS & CL and CP & MA (so you don't have to choose one sound at the expense of the other).

Cocteau ships as a DIY kit with PCB and hard-to-find/special-order parts (slide switches, 2M(B) pots, etc.), with a Tayda BOM for the Alpha pots and a Mouser BOM for all other parts. Build instructions will be provided.

Installation requires desoldering of some components (mostly resistors) and cutting of a few traces.

Cocteau is designed to allow the user to modify the existing circuits while allowing easy, realtime return to the original 808 sound. For example, the BD Tune pot functions only when the adjacent switch is activated; when deactivated, BD Tune returns to the original value.

Cocteau is also designed to fit within the existing panel clearance using low-profile pots, switches and connectors. A metal enclosure for the YOCTO + Cocteau will be available from Kacper Pawluk, who has already designed the front panel. A laser-cut resin panel, fabricated from his design, has been tested and fits perfectly.

Finally, there will be an expansion port on the back panel of the enclosure, connected to Trig-3 of the YOCTO sequencer, for installation of swappable drum modules available for future purchase.

30 Instruments and Innovations of Roland's Ikutaro Kakehashi on emusician.com

emusician.com has a post up here featuring the top 30 instruments and innovations of Ikutaro Kakehashi.

"With the passing of Roland founder Ikutaro Kakehashi, the synthesizer world lost one of its greatest visionaries.

In celebration of Kakehashi and his lifetime of defining, and redefining, the term 'musical instrument,' we have assembled a list of his most influential products and technologies—items that have had the greatest impact on popular music over the last 50 years— from his early days as the leader of Ace Tone to his legacy as the founder of Roland.

1. Ace Tone Canary S-2 (1962) [pictured] One of Ace Tone’s earliest successes was the Canary S-2 Clavioline. Based on the original Clavioline designed by Constant Martin in 1947, its tube-based architecture was later replaced by transistors in the S-3 model (pictured above). An example of the Clavioline sound can be found in the solo from Del Shannon’s “Runaway” (which for hair-splitters was actually a heavily modified early-model Clavioline unit redubbed the Musitron)."

"This a great working vintage keyboard/synth/sequencer package. (note one of the photos shows the low battery in the display), the battery was just changed out with a fresh alkaline pack at the time of the listing, that should last for years. sounds great, and is in VERY nice clean condition. no damage, great for the stage, recording, etc."

I forgot that the Minilogue is equipped with an arpeggiator so I used Ableton Live for the bass. You can see that I'm programming a short sequence on the Minilogue later in the video. For some reason it starts halfway through the pattern but as it's synced to Ableton Live it works anyway."

"Yence505 - 'All Analog 12'
After a coupe of weeks of having no new ideas or inspiration, this was the only thing worth recording so far. Pretty sad melody, not intentional, just happened. Very rough version. Arranged and sequenced in Ableton, but only sending midi to all the analog gear. Recorded in one go, no multitracking, plugins, etc...

Akai Tom Cat + Rhythm Wolf: Drums
EHX Crash Pad: open hihat, ehx pulsar does autopan on it
Korg Volca Keys: brass melody (has ehx memory toy and spring reverb on it.
Korg volca Bass: Bassline, waldorf 2-pole is providing the stutter effect on it.
Arturia Microbrute: pulse/flute-ish melody
Vermona Mono Lancet: arp"

IKUTARO KAKEHASHI (The legend maker) - Tribute from A Guy Called Gerald

Published on Apr 3, 2017 A GUY CALLED GERALD

"Tribute to the late great Ikutaro Kakehashi"

A fitting tribute from someone at the birth of the resurrection of early Roland analog. I added this to the main post here.

For anyone not familiar with A Guy Called Gerald, via Wikipedia:

"Gerald Simpson (born 16 February 1967), better known as A Guy Called Gerald, is a British DJ, record producer and musician. He was an early member of 808 State, and later achieved success as a solo artist. He is best known for his early work in the Manchester acid house scene in the late 1980s[1] and the track 'Voodoo Ray'. His style developed during the early 1990s, and his 1995 album Black Secret Technology would become a "much-touted candidate for 'best jungle album ever.'"[2]"

Modular Field Trip Ep. 1 - Tidal Ambience with Mutable Instruments Rings, & Moog Mother 32

Published on Apr 3, 2017 ann annie

"Everything you are hearing and seeing was recorded in real time!
Took my station wagon Wilma (Wilma Wagon) out to the beach today for some nice ambient patching. This will be the start of a new series, each episode with a new natural wonder, each with a new patch and each episode featuring Wilma. Enjoy!

This Patch’s Secrets:
***Power was graciously received from Wilma Wagon’s battery and a power inverter. Audio was recorded with a Scarlett 2i2, and some DI boxes.
// Key Pings: Moog Mother 32
LFO Rate is randomly controlled by its own assignable output
Sequencer is randomly reset at random intervals also from its assignable output.

// Drone: Rings
Rings is receiving Mother 32’s KB output for the v/o
Intellijel Dixie II in LFO mode is controlling Ring’s Structure CV using the sine wave output
Ring’s is being strummed by Mother 32’s LFO Square Wave
Brightness is controlled by Mother 32’s VCO Pulse Wave
The triangle wave output from Dixie ii attenuated by Triatt is controlling the Position CV.
Mother 32’s triangle wave is attenuated then sent into Rings frequency CV for a very small amount of vibrato.

// Effects
The Mother 32’s output is being fed into a Boss ME-50 which supplies heavy amounts of reverb and delay. It is also run through the JHS Alpine and then into a second delay, the MXR Carbon Copy.

Rings output is being sent though into Ocean Verb set in Shimmer mode. The mix is 75% Wet output.

Faintly in the background is the natural audio captured by the camera’s mic. This is unaffected."

DSI PRO 2 CV INPUT TUTORIAL ~ Featuring the Korg SQ-1 sequencer

Published on Apr 3, 2017 once upon a synth

"This is a tutorial demonstrating how to use the control voltage (CV) inputs on the back of the Dave Smith Instruments Pro 2 synthesizer. These inputs allow you to modulate Pro 2 parameters using external gear. In this case I'm using the Korg SQ-1 which is a small sequencer that can output CV signals. On the Pro 2 you simply pick the corresponding CV input in the modulation matrix as the source. You have 4 CV inputs available on the back and they use 1/8" jacks so it's nicely compatible with eurorack modulars for example."

Synthrotek VERB Now Available for Pre-Order

via Synthrotek

"This is a pre-order! All orders will ship this friday, April 7th!

The Synthrotek Verb is a reveb module like no other. This three PT2399 16 bit unit offers a warm tape saturated spring reverb like sound but with the added flair of the subtle modulation which truly makes it shine. The input gain knob adds the the functionality by dropping back the input amount to give cathedral like sounds when the mix is high. The modulation knob can be turned manually for pitch bends, but give it a slow LFO or envelope CV to emulate pitch bends that sound like a tape echo with a broken capstan. The mix knob is a very fast responding cross fader circuit which allows audio rate inputs for further FM like modulation. Add a subtle amount of reverb or crank the mix past 3 o’clock to knock the reverb signal into the rails.

Features:

CV in over MOD and MIX
Buffered Input and Output
CV In for the MIX is additive to the knob.
Very low signal DC offset at -0.073V
Trimmer to adjust input gain.

Coming from the home of Future Sound of London and credited to their ‘producer’ Yage, Ignition of the sun is a deep and evolving journey through liquid spewing analogue sequences, warm saturated swampy sine waves. It calls back to a time from the early 70s with bands such as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze.

All sounds were created and sequenced entirely on the EMS Synthi AKS, multitracked and mixed to 15ips 1/4 Revox tape. The EMS Synthi AKS was first introduced in 1971, one of the earliest Synthesisers available and as used by Radiophonic Workshop, Pink Floyd, Brian Eno.

"A studio recording of a patch I performed at Charlotte Synth Meet 001. The patch really focuses on both the DPO and Erbverb.

Maths Ch4 clocks Tempi via EOC, which drives Brains/PressurePoints to play the melodic line from DPO VCOA. VCOB provides the gritty ostinato which becomes rhythmic pulses from Maths Sum.

Wogglebug and Rene add some CV to the patch for tone shaping to various parameters, and then the rest is played by hand.

Erbverb is set to be 'played' as a controlled feedback source (happens at beginning and ending). All of it passes through an Eventide Space for some final shine and long tails."
